Chapter 11: Black eyes

The guys were standing around the entrance area to the ring getting revved up for the fight that they had in less than five minutes. The other fights had occurred and everyone figured that they were nothing of a challenge. So, if they got past this fight, the rest would be absolute cake… or they figured it to be cake.

"I can't wait anymore! I want to fight!" Tsuki yelled in Hiei's ear which aggravated him as he was just standing cross armed with his eyes closed. They shot open at the sudden rise in noise level coming from the girl. He slowly turned his head sort of pissed. Tsuki gave an innocent, worked on, smile.

"Would you be quiet!" He yelled, deceiving the silence that he had wanted.

"But I'm so impatient! I want to fight Kuro now!" She said.

"Uh, T, I think I should fight Kuro. He seems to be their strongest fighter and we don't want to take any chances." Yusuke said, and turned back around towards the door oblivious to the now steaming Tsuki. Hiei, Kurama, Kuwabara and Botan saw this and Hiei was the only one to smirk at what was to come to him as the others seemed worried.

"So, I am a chance? If I fight then we have a better chance to lose?" She asked calmly, building up the anger. Yusuke noticed what he had said and was afraid to turn to her to answer.

"Um, no! Of course not! It's just that I- uh- thought that… maybe-" Tsuki cut him off.

"Maybe I would lose to Kuro because I am a girl. Well I know Kuro better than you do and I know his moves like the back of my hand because he taught me well." Yusuke was about to speak in defense of himself but Tsuki kept going.

"I know his tricks, how he fights, his motions, what he does when he is at advantage, what he does when he is at disadvantage!" Tsuki tried to continue but it was Yusuke to interrupt her this time.

"Ok okay, sorry. You do seem to have an upper hand with Kuro so we'll see what happens okay?" Yusuke said nervously rubbing the back of his head and waiting to see how Tsuki would react.

She stared him down for a little bit longer till finally dropping the subject in the light that she had won and the announcer had just started to proclaim that they were coming out.

"This next team is the youngest team to ever qualify in tournament history." He started. Hiei and Botan had started to leave to get to their seats when Tsuki asked a question.

"Hey, wait a minute. How did we qualify for this tournament anyways?" She asked puzzled. Everyone just stared at her innocence of knowing the real reason for competing in the tournament. No one knew how to answer her. They just stood there.

Tsuki had her arms crossed looking at each person individually seeing who would answer her. She saw the nervousness in each body, and slowly wondered more and more of what they were really telling her, whether or not it was the complete truth. Her eyes finally landed on Hiei. She thought that he would give a straight answer to her simple question. He was her big brother, wasn't he?

Suddenly, the doors opened, allowing the four fighters to go through. Everyone turned towards the light and the noise of a cheering crowd. The announcer started naming the members of the team off so they could walk off into the light to be cheered for. Kurama was first, and he quickly departed the group regretting lying to T and sad that he left like a coward. But she couldn't know about the real reason. She never could.

Kuwabara was called next and he left as well as people cheered. Next was Yusuke, and Tsuki still looked at him seeing if he would answer. Well, at least he said something.

"Time to fight, let's go T." He said and turned around and left her. Tsuki turned around just in time to see Hiei and Botan walked off as well. Tsuki looked deeply confused and saddened at the situation. She could now tell they were not telling her the full truth, and she didn't like it. She still looked at the two, even as her name had been called, to see if they would miraculously turn around and explain everything. They did not.

Hiei walked in struggle to just leave Tsuki there to wonder. He slightly turned around and attempted to go back to her but Botan stopped him.

"She cannot know, Hiei. We don't want her regretting her place in the group. We can tell the truth when the time is right." She said with sad eyes. Hiei looked at her sternly staring into her soul. He stopped and looked back at the glowing light. Tsuki still stood there watching them leave. That made a pain go off in Hiei's heart to see her eyes. The usual navy color they presented had been tapped and nothing but black remained. She stared at his red eyes in sadness. He bared that with all the strength he had, and turned back around.

Tsuki stood in confusion of why no one would answer such a simple question for her. She could find no answer except that they were keeping information from her. She lowered her head.

"Brother?" She whispered at a low tone. Hiei froze causing Botan to stop as well.

"Brother? Who would she be-" Botan looked at Hiei and stopped. She saw the surprise and hurt in Hiei's eyes. She knew who she was talking about. She looked back at Tsuki and watched her leave into the light and watched the doors slowly close.

"Oh Hiei." She said in sympathy. Hiei ignored her and walked off rounding the corner in anger. This time, Botan lowered her head. She was not aware that the bond that Hiei and T had was so strong. She glared at the corner Hiei had turned without a word. She knew this was killing him lying to her. But it was for her own good. Her own life.

"Where is she?" A man in a box room at the top of the stands asked himself. He was the same man as before, who stood atop the podium and knocked Tsuki unconscious the other night. He was sweating from the fact that Tsuki had not come out of the doors when her name had been called the first time or the second or third. He was about to try a fourth time when she walked out finally. His speeding heart dialed down a bit as some stress lifted away. Although, a ring made him leapt a bit before he picked it up after the third ring.

"Hello?" He asked nervously into the phone. His hand was slightly shaking.

"Has it started yet?" The other voice belonging to a man asked.

"Almost, I just finished calling out her team." The man in the booth said.

"Good, because I am finding difficulty waiting for her team to win this tournament." The other man said.

"Oh now sir, we are not sure they will win exactly, they are only children."

"Yes you are right, but I figure that the spirit detective of the underworld and his friends can defeat those fighters." The man on the phone said.

"Yes, it is too bad we didn't have time to rig the tournament so they could win."

"I will have nothing of that sort! If they are destined to win they will. I want to see the true power of Sapphire and nothing can taint it. I want to see what those Navy eyes can do." The man said loudly, revealing his New England accent.

"Yes, yes of course. I don't know what I was saying sir. I am sure they are destined to go to New York." The man said feebly into the receiver fearing the other man.

"Yes, they will come to me here in New York." The man lightly laughed into the phone before hanging up. The other man hung up too and practically collapsed onto the desk. He was not aware what this girl held, but it must be incredible beyond what he as a simple human could comprehend. He looked back down at the fighting ring and the two teams he had called out. At first glance you instantly think the team to win would be Kuro's, yet these mere children had power that he did not know of. Power that his boss knew, but would not say. He pushed doubts of what he had agreed to out of his mind and thought of the money. The glorious money that was paid to him for allowing what seemed to be a mockery into his respected tournament. Teenagers.

"T? You ok?" Yusuke asked her as she walked to his side. She said nothing and stared forward. Yusuke was confused at the look of hate on her face and her eyes. Her pure black eyes. She seemed a simple, fragile doll with those eyes. Okay to look at but not to touch. Yusuke left T to her thoughts, not wanting to provoke her and her emotions. He looked at the other team, made up of Kuro, Hasubo, Deisu and Kena. They seemed more determined then before at the meet and greet. They were really worthy fighters with powers that the gang was not aware of.

"So, how do we find out who fights who?" Kuwabara asked. Yusuke and Kurama thought about that when the man's voice came over the intercom.

"Time to make the match ups for the fights!" He said with enthusiasm.

"So that's how."
