Chapter 11

Ever since seeing Sabrina at the hospital on Christmas Eve, Patrick hadn't been able to get her out of his head. It seemed everything he did reminded him of her. And of course the two places he spent the most time, work and home, were the two places that made him think of her the most. He was constantly flooded with memories of the two of them when they were together and he deeply regretted that he allowed them to drift so far apart from each other. He was sure that she would think he was crazy if he told her that he still loved her.

Patrick knew he hadn't done a very good job of keeping his promise to Sabrina that she would always be a part of his and Emma's family, but he was trying harder now, hoping that they would somehow find their way back to each other. But so far, it wasn't working. After their conversation at Christmas, he had been sure to make time for Emma to spend time with Sabrina and his daughter seemed happier than she had in a long time. Sabrina had quickly become a mother figure for Emma and it was clear that she missed having Sabrina in her life.

As Patrick closed his locker, he realized that he was running late to pick up Emma from spending the day with Sabrina. He didn't want Sabrina to think he was taking advantage of her and hurried out of the locker room and headed to Kelly's, where Emma and Sabrina were.

Patrick opened the door to Kelly's and couldn't help but smile at the sight of his daughter with Sabrina, he just wished he was a part of it.

"Daddy!" Emma said when she saw Patrick enter.

"Hi Sweetie," Patrick said going over to the table. "Hi Sabrina," he said with a smile.

"Hi Patrick," Sabrina said back returning his smile, as Patrick wished things weren't so strange between them. He knew he had to find a way to get back to where they were, he just didn't know how.

"All right Emma, are you ready to go home?" Patrick asked before they fell into an awkward silence.

"Yup," Emma said getting up from the table.

"All right, what do you say to Sabrina?"

"Thank you Sabrina! I had so much fun with you," Emma said giving Sabrina a hug.

"You're welcome, Babe. I had fun with you too," Sabrina said as Emma pulled away and Patrick helped her put her jacket on.

"Bye Sabrina!"

"Bye Emma."

"Thank you for spending the day with her, she always enjoys it."

"You're welcome. Bye Patrick."

"Bye Sabrina," Patrick said.

….

Sabrina could have sworn that she heard sadness in Patrick's voice as he said goodbye to her. That didn't make any sense though, why would Patrick be sad about saying bye to her? They hadn't been together in over a year and until she started spending time with Emma a few weeks ago the two had hardly spoke to or saw each other. Deciding she must have been imagining it, Sabrina pushed the thought out of her head as she looked up to see Michael open the door.

Sabrina smiled as Michael headed over to her table. Since they ran into each other at the hospital at Christmas, they had been spending a lot of time together. Sabrina's appointments with Dr. Collins were going well and when she talked to him about Michael, he thought it was a good idea to see where it went. While she knew a part of her would always love Patrick, she also knew that he had moved on and she had to as well.

"Hi," Sabrina said standing up to greet Michael as he came over to the table.

"Hey," Michael said with a smile as he kissed her cheek. "How was the rest of your day with Emma?"

Sabrina smiled. "It was good. I love getting to spend time with her."

"I see why, she's a great kid."

"Yeah, she is," Sabrina said smiling.

"Are you ready to head over to the MetroCourt for dinner?"

"Yes, definitely," Sabrina said as Michael helped her put her coat on. He was always so kind to her and she liked feeling important to someone again. "Thank you."

"You're welcome," Michael said as he took Sabrina's hand in his as they left Kelly's.

….

Patrick left Kelly's feeling frustrated. He and Sabrina seemed to be further apart than when he didn't know she had a huge crush on him and he started dating Britt. He knew that they belonged together, he just didn't know how to get things back to the way they were.

"Daddy?" Emma said, interrupting Patrick's thoughts.

"Yeah Sweetheart?"

"Is everything okay?"

"Yeah, of course. Why did you ask that?" Patrick asked confused as he looked at his daughter in the rearview mirror.

"I don't know. You're really quiet and seem sad."

"I'm sorry, I was just thinking about some things. How was your day with Sabrina?"

"It was good."

"Yeah? What did you do?"

"We went and got our nails painted and then we went and saw that guy from the hospital at Christmas… Michael, I can't remember his last name."

"Michael Quartermaine?" Patrick asked surprised that Sabrina would have taken Emma to see him.

"Yeah, that's it."

"Why did you go see him?"

"I think that Sabrina is dating him," Emma said as Patrick felt his heart sink to his stomach.

"You do?"

"Yeah, she seems happy."

"Well that's good," Patrick said, hoping his daughter couldn't tell that he was lying. When Michael said that they hadn't gone to the hospital together on Christmas Eve, Patrick thought it meant it wasn't too late for him and Sabrina to get back together. Since then, he hadn't been very successful in connecting with her again, but maybe Michael had. Was he too late? Did he blow his chance to be with Sabrina again?
