Description: After witnessing a horrible crime, Jamie's dreams are haunted by the memories. Only Eddie's soothing voice can calm his soul.
A/N: I am back with another story for the collection and this time it is from my very first guest writer BlueBlood82. Please enjoy and leave a lovely review. I will share all reviews with her.
Eddie knew the minute Jamie came in from an extended night tour something was terribly wrong. He was pale, he was quiet, and he went straight for the bottle kept inside the cabinet. He poured two finger of pure whiskey and dropped it like a hot potato down his throat.
Concerned, Eddie padded over to him and touched his back. "Jamie, what happened?"
He shook his head, "I don't want to talk about it now. I just…" He poured another glass and downed that one too.
"You want to hide in the bottom of a liquor bottle," Eddie replied softly. "At least sit down and I'll fix you something to eat."
Again he shook his head, "It won't stay put. I don't feel all that well."
Eddie reached out and touched his forehead, he was clammy, and acting as if he were in a bit of shock. "How about a shower then we just crawl under the blankets. If you want to talk about it great, if you don't we can just hold onto each other."
Jamie offered a small smile, his body was aching and the hot water would feel god. While he showered Eddie turned their bed down and made sure his night clothes were out. He'd seen something awful, that she was sure of and it was going to eat at him until he was ready to let it go.
While in the shower Jamie emptied the whiskey from his stomach. There was more blood at that scene today than he remembered seeing in a long time. The terrified child in the corner just clinched it for him. No one should ever see that, never mind an innocent little one.
He came out of the bathroom and put on the clothes that Eddie laid out. She was already in their bed, lights turned off ready for him. Eddie didn't know how to give Jamie comfort that night, so she pulled him to her breast and held his head firmly against her, stroking his head and murmuring nonsense to soothe him. "Just try to sleep, sweetie," she whispered. "I'm here, I'm always here."
Jamie shut his eyes hoping to just fall into a peaceful oblivion. He felt himself float in the place between being asleep and being awake. He felt Eddie's hands caressing his head and kissing his cheeks softly. Finally he fell asleep all the way.
[Dream]
Sob! Sob! Sob! Jamie heard the cries and kept searching. "Police…you can come out now. I'm a policeman, I'm here to help you."
Jamie and his partner still had their guns drawn. The house wreaked of blood. There was one victim on the floor by the door, the knife still in his hand. There was cast off on the walls. The metallic smell turned his stomach.
"Police…" Jamie called again as he heard the crying continue. "Where are you? Come out, it's safe."
As Jamie waded through the blood and radioed for a detective squad as well as a bus he saw a tiny little foot sticking out from behind the sofa. There was still crying but it was getting softer and softer…
"No!" Jamie screamed and sat up straight in their bed soaked with sweat. He surprised Eddie when he dashed out of bed and barely made the sink before throwing up again. She jumped out of bed and went to rub his back. "All right, Jamie you need to talk to me, you need to tell me what is wrong."
Eddie led him back to the bed and sat him down wrapping a blanket around his shoulders. She got him a glass of water and sat at his side. She often nursed him through dreams about Joe's death. Eddie slid under the blanket with Jamie and waited.
"It came in as a domestic, anonymous caller," Jamie said in a flat monotone. "Walker and I checked it out. No one answered the door, it was a weird silence and my skin crawled. It was like that sick eerie feeling you get right before the flu attacks your body."
Eddie nodded and slowly dropped Jamie into a reclining position, stroking his hair as he spoke. "We heard a child crying, so we broke the door in. She might have been in danger, we didn't know."
"Of course," Eddie replied giving him permission to have done that. "Of course you had to do that. Was she okay?"
If he had found a child dead, that would explain this for certain. "Yeah…she was uh, hiding behind the couch. The detectives will sort if all out but it looks like he stabbed his wife to death then cut his own throat. The place wreaked of blood, whiskey, dust, I can still smell it. Turns my stomach."
Eddie dropped soft and gentle kisses on Jamie's head and cheeks. She reached an arm around his middle and stroked his stomach hoping to relieve some of the nausea with the love radiating off her touch.
"The detectives didn't really pay her much attention. I knelt down by her and pulled her out of the hiding place. She was so scared, she was trembling in my arms. Her name was Macie. She didn't talk to anyone but me, I…She told me her father was an alcoholic, her mom did pills…She didn't say it like that but…Oh Eddie this poor baby…"
Jamie's voice broke and he began to cry clutching at Eddie's arms and muffling his sobs by holding his breath.
"Jamie, breathe for me," Eddie coaxed. "Breathe in and out…in and out…that's right." She rubbed his arm and his back over and over again.
"But you helped her," Eddie said after a minute. "You really helped her. She was frightened and I know that it must have felt so good to have you there, someone who was sweet and kind."
"She held onto me for dear life,' Jamie admitted. "I can still hear her cries when the CPS worker came and got her. Screamed and cried for her Mommy…but from what we can tell, that woman was no mother. A cat's a better mother than that woman was."
"I'm sure," Eddie validated. "I'm sure that in it's own way it's for the best. Perhaps she will get foster parents or adoptive parents that will really love her and treat her like the special girl she is."
Jamie sniffled, "Maybe. I think if she didn't go and hide…That was the nightmare, finding her like her mother was. I don't know if I will ever forget today."
Eddie kissed him softly on the lips, "You don't have to forget it. You are such a loving caring man, you could never just put this in a box. What you do have to do is get some rest? You think you can try again now you have this off your chest?"
"Will you sing to me?" he asked softly. "When I was a little boy and had a bad dream, my mom or dad would sing to me…Irish Lullabye…"
Eddie smiled down, "I will always sing for you, Jamie. And one day when we have our babies, we can sing to them when they cry."
Jamie smiled, "You want to have babies with me Eddie?" He was a little surprised, they never discussed this, their romance still new.
Eddie smiled, "I want to have everything with you. Hold onto that and dream a happy dream." She tucked the blankets firmly around him and began to sing…"Over in Kilarney, many years ago…" He was sound asleep before the second verse.
