As dawn cracked, they made it halfway up the cliff which towered over Rivendell. A sad Gemma stuck by Kili's side. She was so lost in thought about leaving Gandalf behind, she hardly noticed her older brother had stopped, and was looking back at Rivendell, until Thorin Shouted "Master Baggins..I suggest you keep up". She paused in her tracks, causing Kili to stop in front of her.
"Come on Frodo!" she exclaimed, and then ushered Kili to walk forward. He squeezed onto her hand, sensing her upset about Gandalf. She squeezed back, while holding back tears, but she stayed strong. They walked and walked, for days. Gemma was certainly wishing Gandalf was there, as he was merciful and would give them proper breaks. The Hobbit was not used to walking so much.

Thunder was rumbling, the earth beneath their feet was shaking, and Gemma was petrified. The Dwarves and both Hobbits were walking carefully along the narrow edge of a cliff. When Bilbo's foot slipped and the earth beneath him cracked, Gemma screamed loudly, causing the other Dwarves to notice, and hold onto him before he could fall. "We must find shelter!" exclaimed Thorin. All of a sudden, after a few moments silence, there was a yell."Look out!" yelled Dwalin over the pounding rain and thunder. Kili suddenly grabbed onto Gemma tightly, as a huge bolder was smashed against the side of the cliff they were on. Gemma screamed as tiny pieces of the bolder scattered like the rain on top of them.

"Hold on" Kili exclaimed to Gemma, and she tightened her grip on his shirt. "This is no thunder storm!" yelled Balin "it's a thunder battle...look!". They all looked to see a stone giant grabbing yet another bolder. "Well bless me..the legends are true..giants! Stone giants!" shouted Bofur. Bilbo and Gemma gasped loudly, and she held onto Kili's shoulders as Dwalin shouted "Hold on!". That's when the cliff began to separate, and a frightened Gemma stumbled back. Luckily for her, Fili grabbed her and pulled her into him. "Gemma take my hand!" yelled Kili but it was too late, the jump was too far.

"Take care of her!" yelled Kili to Fili, who nodded and held onto Gemma so tightly, she could not breath.
Suddenly, they were flung, and attached to land once more. "Go! Go! Go!" yelled Thorin, and everybody rushed off. Kili looked back and noticed Gemma and Fili were still on the giants leg. "Bilbo!" she screamed in fright. Even when she was a baby she would look to Bilbo to comfort her. There was no way of it happening, though. He was stuck to the wall with fright himself. She never imagined herself in this position, fighting to stay alive. That's when she felt herself about to vomit. "Fili..I'm gonna vomit" she exclaimed. He looked at her in surprise, and bent her over the edge. After she was finished and crying, he held her into his chest once again, rubbing her hair and singing a Dwarvish song to her. Suddenly, the giant they were on was hit in the head, and it fell towards a cliff. Gemma screamed as they hit it, and could hear Thorin screaming "NO!".

"They're alive!" was all Gemma heard, her ears were buzzing hard. "Gemma!" she heard Kili shout, and he turned her over onto her stomach. She gazed up into his eyes and then felt the need to vomit again. She bent over the cliff, and vomited and then seen her brother dangling, holding on for his life! "Bilbo!" She screamed, and Thorin swooped down and grabbed him. She sighed with relief as Kili pulled her back. The dizziness had made her sick. So sick she could hardly move. Kili volunteered to carry her, but she stood up, wobbled a bit and then they were on their way to find shelter.

As they walked into the cave, Thorin asked Dwalin check the back as "caves were seldom unoccupied in the mountain". Once it was confirmed that there was nothing/nobody there; the group began to set up camp there. Gemma cuddled close to Kili, both for warmth and comfort as she was still traumatised by the earlier events. "I still don't feel so good" she admitted to him, looking up at him with her big eyes. He seemed lost in her eyes for a moment, unable to respond. He blinked a little, before his eyes snapped to Gloin who was about to make a fire, though Thorin told him not to "It's going to be okay. I know you're frightened, but all will be well. I promise". "Kili?" she mumbled, her eyes still on him. He finally looked down at her, raising both eyebrows to usher her on. "Do you think..you and I will ever get to be a family? You know, have a baby. Live in a warm, cosy house? Get married?". He chuckled a little "of course we will, Gemma. If you're not pregnant already, you will be very soon. We will get a cosy house, not too big, not too small...just right for our little family. As for if we will be married, we will. Very soon. That's a promise". "Do you think I could be pregnant right now?" she asked him then. He pulled her even closer "I hope so". "What if I die?" she then sighed. He pulled back slightly, shaking his head "I won't allow it, I'll protect you, my love". She giggled happily, resting her head on his shoulder and allowing a blissful silence between them.

An hour later, everyone was peacefully sleeping. Gemma was having a wonderful dream, when she was awoken by loud whispering. She sighed a little, sitting up and unwrapping Kili's arm from around her to see who was making the noise. She noticed Bilbo standing near the entrance, talking to Bofur. He was leaving. He was leaving her! She couldn't believe he would do such a thing. She scrambled to her feet, watching as his eyes shifted from Bofur to her. A deep frown was evident on her face, as she stared angrily into his eyes. Bilbo turned away form her. or the first time in his life, and was about to walk away when Bofur noticed his sword was shining. "What's that?" he suddenly asked d curiously. Bilbo looked down, lifting the sword from his holster, his mouth hanging wide open. All of a sudden, the sandy ground started to open. Thorin sat up suddenly, yelling for everybody to wake up. Gemma was startled, having now known he was awake the whole time. Kili jumped to his feet, pulling Gemma close out of habit. Just then, the ground opened and they all fell through.

In that moment, Gemma was certain she was doomed to die.
