Chapter 10

Tris's POV

After my run in with Tobias, I joined Uriah and Will in Zeke's apartment.

"So," Uriah asked, "how'd it go?"

"Let's just say it didn't go as planned," I say as I float down next to Will.

"What do you mean?" Will asks.

"Just one quick question…is Zeke here?" I ask.

"Nope," Uriah says, popping the p. "He went out to the park with Shauna."

"Okay," I say, "that's a relief."

"Why's that?" Uriah asked.

"Because I don't want him to hear what I'm about to tell you," I replied smoothly. Zeke was a great guy, but I wasn't prepared to fully trust him with this yet. Who knows what he might tell Four, or Shauna or anyone. Plus, I wasn't sure what he would think about the situation. No doubt he'd be against it.

I told Uriah and Will everything I had witnessed. From Christina's talk with Tobias up to what happened afterward. They stayed silent for a moment, letting their brains process the information.

Will was the first to speak. "I see what you meant by it didn't go as planned," he remarked. "Guess you'll just have to see how it plays out."

I nodded, but wanted to change the subject. "So, Uriah, have you seen Marlene yet?" I asked him.

He cringed, before answering. "No."

"Why not?" I asked, glad that he didn't bother to mention our previous topic.

"Whenever I look for her, she's not there. Lynn comes from time to time. I saw her when you guys were gone. She doesn't know where Marlene is either. It's strange. We never saw her. Not up there, and certainly not down here. It's like she's avoiding us completely."

"Too many mysteries to solve nowadays, huh?" I ask.

"You got that right," Uriah replied before plopping down on Zeke's couch, as opposed to the floor that he was previously sitting on. "I didn't even know I could turn visible. Or that we'd get to spend so much time here on Earth. And why?"

"There are just too many questions, and not enough answers," Will says sighing. "Like whether I should reveal myself to Christina or not…and possibly Cara too. Where Marlene went, what to do with all our time, why we even have time here… the list goes on and on."

"There's so much we could do, but we don't have anywhere to start," Uriah says.

"Then let's make a plan," I say. Intrigued, they both look at me. "So, the Marlene problem seems like a problem, so that option seems favorable. Revealing ourselves to those around we can do anytime for a while, so we should put that on hold until either it's absolutely necessary, or we have enough time to explain our world to them. I know… we have to talk to Lynn. She can help us search for Marlene. Once we find Marlene, we can begin to figure out why we get to spend all this time on Earth. There has to be reason why we're here. I'll just tell Tobias that we'll be leaving tomorrow so he doesn't think I'm avoiding him. He'll have to understand. We'll talk specifics tomorrow. Any objections?"

I looked at Uriah and Will. The both looked excited. Uriah looked particularly happy, probably because would be reunited with his two best friends.

"I'll go talk to Tobias now. You guys should rest," I say. They nod as I exit the room.

I float back over to his apartment. I wonder what he'll think of me coming back so soon. I mean, he finally convinced me to give him a chance, and I'm telling him that I'm leaving tomorrow a little over hour later. I'm such a great girlfriend.

I try to float through the door, but I end up crashing into the door. "Ow," I say. And I thought ghosts could pass through doors and stop feeling pain. Guess I was wrong. Tobias opened the door to see what had happened. I slipped into his apartment. He looked around, but nothing appeared to be wrong. He shrugged, and closed the door. Once he sat back down on his couch, I turned visible. I float over to him, and tap him on the shoulder. He looks up, sees me, and smiles.

"You know, I thought I heard something," he says, his dark blue eyes twinkling as he looked up at me. I felt a twinge of regret, knowing that I would be leaving him so soon.

"Tobias," I begin. He looks at me, probably preparing for some bad news. He knows me too well. I take a deep breath. "I wanted to you to know that I'll be leaving tomorrow with Will and Uriah." He looks a bit suspicious.

"It has nothing to do with you," I add quickly. "It's just that Marlene hasn't been since she was alive, and we've all started to worry. I'll try to come back soon, I promised."

Tobias stays silent for a while. I start to worry. Maybe he'll get mad at me and think I'm lying to him again.

A few moments later, he opened his mouth. "Why is this of your concern now?" he asks bitterly.

"Because it matters to Uriah," I respond a bit angrily. "She's our friend and we haven't seen her since we were alive. You wouldn't know, but people just don't go missing where we go."

I didn't want to call it heaven. We aren't supposed to tell a living soul anything about the afterlife. It was a worse crime than dating someone who's alive.

"And you couldn't have gone to find her earlier?" He asks, his voice laced with hostility.

"No, instead I was busy finding you!" I say raising my voice. I lower it a bit. "Look, Tobias, this has nothing to do with you. It might seem sudden, but we have a problem if Marlene really is missing. If I see at all during my journey, I'll stop by."

His voice softens as he says, "I know, but this whole experience seems crazy to me. It feels like I'm dreaming."

I float over and sit next to him. "I'd never leave you if I weren't for good reason," I whisper softly.

"I know," he says. I rest my head on his shoulder. We sit in a comfortable silence, with my head on his shoulder for a while, and I figure that this is so much better than not talking to him at all.

And that's a wrap. I'm so sorry for not updating sooner. I've been really busy lately. I'll try to update sooner next time. I also had writer's block for a while, but I finally got some inspiration by watching Divergent:) I'll try to go back and edit the chapters soon...I haven't edited one yet:)

Question of the Chapter: What's your favorite movie? Personally, I like Disney, so I'd have to go with Big Hero 6...no Frozen...or The Lego Movie...or The Lion King...argh! There are too many good movies:)

See you next chapter!
