Chapter Eleven- Beauty Fell

The day Percy sang marked a new beginning for the residents of Lakeland. Breaking with legend, tradition, and myths of old, Percy didn't sing for his own demise. He sang for all those who had lost young to the Great Sorrow. He sang for his Blue-eyed Muse and her loss of the Dark One. He sang for his Sue's lost joy. He sang for mistakes made and love lost.

He sang for everyone.

When his voice trailed off, the final note echoing across Lakeland, his Sue began gathering flowers and pretty leaves from the bank, and dropping them into the water where Percy had rolled their eggs. Other feathered friends joined her and all across the lake, beauty fell. Tired from her emotions, and exertions, she swam to Percy and entwined her neck with his.

"We will have young. We will see them hatch. We will watch them grow, and they will fly away. It is the way of things, and it will happen in its own time," Percy said softly into his Sue's neck, rubbing his beak gently across hers.

"In the correct time. Next Thaw," Sue added, draping a wing across Percy's back, letting him support her, guide her to their nesting site. From his spot in the tree above, Steve the Sparrow looked on, content in the results of his meddling. Wishing he could somehow fix the Dark One. Knowing he couldn't. The Dark One had flown too far for Steve's contacts to find. But he knew someday the Dark One would return for the Little Lorelai. Migratory animal or not, Steve believed they were life mates.

Returning to the present, Percy raised his head to see his Blue-eyed Muse and the Dark One kissing on the bridge, as the gathered humans cheered. He had missed their life joining ceremony.

"That was the most beautiful human mating ritual I have ever seen," Sue said, her soft cluck soothing Percy's speeding heart. "I know you love the Little Lorelai. I've always known. You have a connection. But he's good for her, Percy. The Dark One is her equal, and she is his. Together, they are more."

"Yes. Together, they are better, just like the two of us," Percy replied, not knowing what else to say as he watched the intense stranger named Ray approach his metal cage.

"Let's get you out of there, fella. Jailed for beaking Jess. Hell, no one should be incarcerated for so small a crime," Ray said as he slid the latch and opened the door for Percy.

Glaring at the stranger, Percy sedately made his way into the water and joined his Sue under the willow. The two swam out into the lake, turning to face each other.

"If given the choice now, would you still have chosen me?" Percy asked, and Sue clucked softly in joy, pressing her forehead against his.

"Yes, I would join our lives again," she said, renewing their vows amongst the twinkling lights strung in the trees, and the candlelit lanterns floating around them. On the shore, the newlyweds looked across the lake to see the pair of swans, heads and necks forming the shape of a heart. Both couples felt equally blessed by each other's presence.
