The Capitol's Star: Chapter 11

I kept my head down as our chariot moved back to the beginning of the street where we started. I could see Eliza, and James waiting for us. But I know that I need to speak with Derek. As we pull up next to them, Eliza is squealing with joy. "Oh! You two looked ah-mazing! I'm very proud of both of you." James also adds, "I was surprisingly impressed." I can hear both of them very clearly, but I try my hardest to block them out. I need Derek. Not a cheer squad. Eliza seems to notice my quietness and darts her eyes from Maxwell to me. He shrugs. "Where's Derek?" I ask. Eliza begins-"He's back at the apartment. He wanted to talk to the Avoxes about" Before she could finish- Maxwell interrupted, "Um…Avoxes can't talk." Eliza narrows her eyes and replies, "Well sure they can't talk. But they can listen…And sometimes it's better that way." Maxwell stares back at her confused. "Ok enough chit-chat. I called our limo to pick us up. He should be here by now." She says hurriedly. "Can I walk home?" I ask. Now I've received looks by James, Maxwell, and Eliza. "Are you sure, Destiny?" Maxwell questions. "It's a long way." I shake my head. "It's fine. It'd be great…exercise!" I suggest. James chuckles and says, "Ok. Just know that tomorrow you'll be getting lots of exercise." Oh. Training begins tomorrow. Great.

Feeling the awkward silence, I start jogging. I take off my shoes, and begin jogging at a steady pace. I wiggle my way through the large crowds of citizens leaving the stands. I waste a whole 10 minutes figuring out how to escape.

Once I free myself from the hordes of people, I begin my pace again. This time, I run a little faster. I pass the same buildings that I ran past with Derek. I turn the corner. Suddenly I hear a honk. I keep on running. I could feel my heart beat faster. With every step, I could feel energy being taken away. Then another honk. My feet halt to a stop while I jerk my head around. It looks like it's just traffic trying to weave out of the busy streets. While I've stopped moving, I notice that multiple people have opened their car's windows to stare at me. Who wouldn't? A Capitol girl in a long green dress holding her heels with her extravagant head piece falling off her head. Perfectly normal.

After a minute I snap out of my daze when I hear laughter behind me. Three kids are passing the street corner that I just ran by. Then it hits me. They're all tributes. The pair from 10, and another girl. 10 is easily recognized because of their cowboy get-up. The other girl is covered in pink sparkles from head to toe. I know she's not Crystal from 1 because this girl has short brown hair. Crystal is blonde and she's wearing gold anyways. I know that the girl from 10 already hates me, so I sprint as fast as I can.

I have almost ran out of their sight until I hear someone yelling. "Hey!" I hear from behind. It must be the boy from 10 because it was a deep masculine voice. I'm completely startled and I almost trip on my own feet. Wow Des, way to go. I snap my head and I see them running towards me. Capitol teens have killer confidence, but this was a new situation for me. I'm not dealing with snotty teens; I'm dealing with kids that want to kill me. I know how to deal with the rich-kid persona. But certainly not with kids who would laugh at the sight of me lying helplessly in the Arena.

I can feel my palms getting sweaty. The boy from 10 is easily outrunning the other two. I manage to wave shyly at them. The boy from 10 stopped in front of me while his friends have switched to walking. The girl from 10 pushes her partner and folds her arms in front of her. "So you're from the Capitol?" she asks. A knot forms in my throat. "Yeah. I am." I reply straightforward. Now's not the time to be the shy weakling. She raises an eyebrow and says, "Well everybody's talking about you. Tributes especially." The boy from 10 finally speaks up, "Sammie please. Can we stalk her later?" I gaze up at him. Maybe he sees my discomfort. He was the one who gave me that soft look while Sammie looked like she wanted to beat me up. Sammie scoffs and unfolds her arms. "Well Damien I'm just letting her know." Then she turns to me, "You're not as scary as I thought you were. Good to know," She remarks. Then she and the other girl move past me. Sammie shoves me out of the sidewalk and whispers to the other girl. I'm completely shocked. Damien sighs and looks me straight in the eye. "I'm sorry. Sammie's…a little Career-ish sometimes. She's the mayor's daughter. Thinks she's the bees' knees. You know?" I let out a slight laugh. "It's totally fine. I've had lots worse." I reply. He smiles and holds out his hand. "Damien, District 10." I grab it firmly and say confidently, "Destiny. Capitol. District 11."I feel a sense of pride burning from within. Forget "allies". I have officially made a friend.
