Hey guys, it's me again. Yes I know I'm a week late with this chapter and I do apologize. Moving on, I have an announcement to make but I'll wait till the end of the chapter to say what I want to say. Relax, it's nothing bad and has nothing to do with this story. As always, I don't own this chapter or any of the characters. So please don't sue.
Rampaging Rhyhorn, Ash vs. Serena
Morning time and the sun finally rose out of the horizon. For Team Rocket, it was another day for them at the Rocket Café. Long gone were the days they would pursue Ash and his friends on their quest to capture Pikachu. Instead, they were more productive Team Rocket members who can now be considered contributing members. After doing all the necessary preparations to begin their daily business, Team Rocket's reinforcements, as well as their surprise package from Giovanni finally arrived.
"Don't tell me we are partnered up with these losers?!" one the Team Rocket members said aggravated by the idea of working with Jessie and James.
Looking up towards the voice, Jessie wasn't too thrilled to be partnered up with her rival. "Cassidy" the purple-haired growled.
"And Botch" James added.
"It's Butch not BOTCH!" the angered Team Rocket agent responded.
"Yeah whatever just tell us what you are hear for and leave" a hostile Jessie told the duo.
Even though Cassidy didn't want to reveal their reason for being there, especially considering that she will have to work with Jessie, she had no choice. After all, Giovanni sent them on a 'special' mission. "The boss told us to give this to you" she said handing over a rather large briefcase.
James opened the case and was rather surprised by what was inside. "Wait does this mean…" he mumbled while holding up a black Team Rocket uniform.
By now, Cassidy was fuming with anger. Ever since their meeting back in Team Rocket training camp, Jessie was always the screw up. Cleary Cassidy had the upper hand in just about every aspect of being a Team Rocket agent. Yet, somehow Jessie was still able to one up her. How dare Giovanni do this to them.
Being less angered by the situation, Butch was able to explain what was going on. "After hearing about the early success of some Team Rocket agents in Kalos, Giovanni sent us over to give those agents a promotion. Just how it ended up being you three I will never understand" Butch sadly stated.
Speechless, Jessie, James, and Meowth stood for a bit starring at the black uniforms and Pokéballs within the suitcase. Not too soon after, the three breakdown in a group hug. "At long last, the boss finally sees our worth" Jessie said crying her eyes out.
"Yeah, even though I wanted to be da bosses top cat, this is da next best thing" Meowth admitted.
"We won't let you down boss. We'll show you why we deserve the title of Team Rocket Elite" James said to no one in particular.
Cassidy and Butch watched the three as they cried. They still couldn't understand what was so great about those three clowns that made Giovanni promote them. What is worse is they will start having to take orders from people who they consider losers.
Without notice, Jessie quickly regained her composure. "Listen here, you two will run this café until someone else arrives to take care of this place" she instructed the duo.
Rolling her eyes, Cassidy sarcastically responds "yes master."
Quickly changing into their new uniforms, the trio head off towards Route 5 in search of Pokémon Giovanni will be proud of. "Hey Botch, how about we just call in some regular grunts to run this crap shack" Cassidy asks her partner.
"The name is not Botch, it's…oh why do I even bother" Butch said lowering his head in disappointment.
Mid-day on Route 5, Ash decides to have a training session after lunch. This time, he decides to implement a few techniques he picked up on in Sinnoh. Helping him with the training is Serena. She too wants to become strong enough to give Shauna a proper challenge. She also used the training session as a way of growing closer to her Pokémon like Shauna had.
"Everyone watch how Pikachu does it so you can get an idea of what I want you to learn" Ash told his Pokémon. "Are you ready Pikachu?" he questioned his Pokémon.
"Pika" it nodded showing its preparedness.
"How about you Serena?" he asked to his friend helping him.
Whatever Ash had in mind for training was definitely not what Serena had pictured. In her mind, she thought Ash's training consisted of running, strength workouts, and other things of that nature. Instead, she is with Fennekin ready to attack Pikachu. "Yes Ash I'm ready" she replied. "Fennekin, use ember on Pikachu" Serena commanded her Pokémon.
Just like her trainer, Fennekin also thought Ash's training was much different than having friends attack each other. The fire type took in a deep breath, "Feeeenn." Just like Serena ordered, she launched an ember towards Pikachu.
"You know what to do Pikachu, run towards it with quick attack and spin sideways to the left" the Kanto trainer instructed his Pokémon.
Running towards the attack, Pikachu leaps head first while keep his arms by his side. Before the attack got too close, he began spinning. Sure enough, he was able to evade the attack and landed right next to Fennekin, surprising the fire type. "Fenn?"
To say everyone was shocked by its effectiveness was a bit vague. Never had they thought such a simple technique could prove to be quite useful. "Wow Fennekin we really need to practice this move!" Serena told her starter excitedly. She calls out her Squirtle to also receive training.
With Pikachu shooting thunderbolts, Froakie and Chespin both take turns in practicing the spin dodge. Charizard and Fletchling however have different ways of practicing. With both Pokémon being flying types, they both charge at each other in the air before spinning to the side. Soon enough, the two manage to avoid each other preventing a mid-air collision.
Off to the side, Bonnie is busy playing hide and seek with all of Clemont's Pokémon as well as Dedenne. Normally Clemont's Pokémon would also be training alongside Ash's but the gym leader was currently occupied with latest invention. "Hehehe, Clemontic Gear activate" the inventor spoke. In his hands, he holds a device in the shape of an oversized stopwatch with an antenna connected to the bottom end via cable.
Noticing Clemont's new invention, Ash, Bonnie, and Serena take a few minutes off from what they were doing. "What do you have there Clemont?" Ash asked looking intently at the gym leader's strange device.
"With people like Team Rocket, Team Flare, and Dolan and Ricky out and about, we need to make sure we can track down our Pokémon should the need ever come" Clemont explained. "With this device, we can track any of our Pokémon as long as they are wearing a tiny transmitter. Lost or stolen Pokémon will be a thing of the past. I call it the Radio Wave Sensing Machine for All Directions."
Ash was impressed by Clemont's invention. Science can sure make finding something much more easier. "This is what I call technology when you want it" he finished.
"At least the name explains what it's for" Bonnie commented rather annoyed by another invention.
Clemont places a tiny bug that is barely visible to the naked eye on Dedenne. He challenges Dedenne to a game of hide and seek. "Nene" the Antenna Pokémon cheered as he and Bonnie ran off hiding from Clemont.
"Now allow me to demonstrate. With Dedenne hiding, I can find exactly where he is at any given time." A red dot appears on his device giving him a location to begin his search. "Follow me" he said leading Ash and Serena towards Bonnie and Dedenne. The childhood friends face each other while following Clemont. They thought it was a bit strange having Clemont lead the pack considering his is the slowest runner of the group. Continuing their run, they fail to notice that Clemont has stopped running in order to better read his device. Accidentally bumping into Clemont, he drops his invention and sparks begin to fly. "Watch out, I think it's about to…" The three teens prepare themselves for what's about to come next.
An explosion envelops the three teens and Pikachu. A cloud of smoke quickly rises from the explosion leaving the teens covered in soot. Bonnie emerges from her hiding spot, "This means we win Dedenne!" Bonnie cheerfully throws Dedenne in the air and catches him to celebrate their victory.
"Sorry about making you drop your invention" Ash and Serena apologized. Had they been paying attention instead of thinking about the fact that Clemont was running faster than them, this whole incident could have been avoided.
Clemont shook off soot from his body. At least Ash and Serena were willing to own up to their mistakes. "Don't worry about it. If it couldn't take a simple drop, I honestly don't think it is suited for actual use just yet" he explained. To be honest, almost none of his inventions are ever designed to withstand any sort of damage. From now on, he vowed to add resistance to his inventions, mainly because he himself grew tired of the explosions.
The ground began to shake and a faint stomping sound could be heard from far away. "Earthquake?" Ash asked confused.
The other three quickly dismissed Ash's suspicions. Unless an earthquake is caused by a Pokémon, they were pretty rare in Kalos. An approaching cloud of dust further dismissed Ash's earthquake theory. Serena, being all too familiar with that sound, suspected what was coming next. She grabbed Ash and Bonnie's hand and pull them aside to prevent any injuries. Clemont had more than enough common sense to move out the way. "Huh, check it out buddy. It is a bunch of Rhyhorn" Ash told his Pikachu as they watched the Rhyhorn run by them.
"Waaiit" everyone heard a scream from the same direction. They saw a blonde girl roller skating towards the Rhyhorn. Following her are two Lucario. She stops by the group in order to catch her breath. "Whoa, those Rhyhorn sure do have endurance" she said while panting every once in a while.
Waiting for its trainer to regain their composure, one of the Lucario looks around and immediately walks up to Serena. Just standing in front of the trainer, the Lucario closely examines the honey-blonde trainer. Serena stands also observing the Aura Pokémon. By now, Fennekin and Squirtle stand next to their trainer, growling at the strange Lucario ready to take on any threat to Serena.
Surprisingly enough, she didn't seem to fear the fighting type. "Lucario come on, we have so Rhyhorn to heard" Lucario's trainer yells out finally catching her breath. Taking one last glance at Serena, the Lucario leaves along with his trainer and the other Lucario.
Serena stood still for a while. It was strange how a random Lucario just stood there starring at her. To make matter even stranger, she had done the same without any fear. "Are you alright Serena?" Ash asked snapping Serena from her thoughts.
Serena looked at Ash. Like the Lucario, there was something about him that she just couldn't put her finger on. "Huh, oh yeah I'm fine. Thanks for asking" she replied. Whatever just happened, she would never know. With Ash and everyone's support, she had nothing to fear.
"She seems like she could use some help" Clemont stated. With the roller skater struggling with a bunch of Rhyhorn, there was no doubt they could be of use.
Always being the type of people to lend helping hands, the group agrees with Clemont. After recalling all their Pokémon, the group set off in search of the ramping Rhyhorn. Not too long into the search, the group is on a hill, overlooking a small settlement. Serena's suspicions are finally confirmed when she sees the track and the bleachers. It was a Rhyhorn Racing track. "Not this again" she thought to herself.
Running toward the finish line, Ash sees a bunch of Rhyhorn enclosed in a fence. "These must be the Rhyhorn from before" he told Pikachu.
The electric type agreed with him. After a close observation, he can confirm that these are in fact the same Rhyhorn. "And anyone is welcome to use one for tomorrow's event" said a strange voice. Looking up, the group sees a teen about their age approaching them on a Rapidash. Dismounting the Fire Horse Pokémon, the group gets a better look at the teen. They see he is wearing a button up purple shirt and black pants with short black boots. "My name is Calem and I am the organizer of this event" he introduced himself.
"I'm Ash and this is my partner Pikachu" he returned the favor.
"And I'm Serena"
"And I'm Bonnie. This is my older brother Clemont and my Pokémon, Dedenne."
"It's great meeting you all. As I was saying, you can borrow one of these Rhyhorn for tomorrow's event, a Rhyhorn race that is open to anyone" Calem explained. Seeing other people by the fence, Calem goes off to help the others. "If there is anything you need, don't hesitate to ask" he told the group going off to assist other people.
"Hmm, so he said we can borrow one for tomorrow's event" Ash told himself. Sensing Ash's recklessness was about to lead up to something, Pikachu jumps off his trainer's shoulders and onto Serena's. Jumping the fence, Ash quickly approaches a Rhyhorn.
Seeing Ash was about to make a big mistake, Serena yells "Wait!" Stopping the trainer in his tracks, Serena saves Ash from a world of hurt. "You can't just walk up to Rhyhorn like that. You have to slowly approach it from the front until it notices your presence" she said demonstrating the proper technique for approaching Rhyhorn. Following Serena's example, Ash tip toes his way towards a Rhyhorn slowly gaining its trust.
Clemont notices Serena's knowledge about the Spikes Pokémon. "Wow Serena, you sure are used to being around Rhyhorn" he comments.
Trying to be as modest as she can, Serena explains "well I have been in a couple Rhyhorn races before. My mom is a great Rhyhorn racer and sometimes has me practice."
"Ahh I see, so you want to become a Rhyhorn racer" Clemont assumed.
Serena hated to admit it but she had no other choice. "While I don't hate Rhyhorn Racing, I think there is some else out there for me" she said wondering just what it could be.
Hearing this, Ash knew he needed some training in the art of Rhyhorn Racing and what better person to receive training from other than Serena. "Would you help me learn everything I need to know about Rhyhorn Racing for tomorrow" Ash begged Serena. He really wanted to participate in tomorrow's race.
Serena hesitated. She certainly didn't start her journey to begin Rhyhorn Racing on her own. If anything, she went on a journey to find something else to do. She just happened to run into Ash after all these years. Looking down, she sees Ash on one knee almost as if he was proposing to her. Even Pikachu joined his trainer in asking for her help. Blushing, she shakes the thought away, "sure I'll help you."
After being told about the proper racing attire, Ash finds Calem and follows him to try on a jumpsuit. On top of the hill where Ash and friends were just a few minutes ago, Team Rocket watches the movement down below. "Imagine how strong a heard of Rhyhorn are if we sent them over to the boss" Jessie asked.
As usual, Meowth narrates a scenario for the trio. "Imagine one day, da Officer Jennys of da Kanto Region find Giovanni's hideout. They will send their Growlithes after da boss. Out of nowhere, a whole hoard of Rhyhorn sweep da Growlithe aside like some sort of play doll giving da boss plenty of time to escape. Next thing you know the boss will say, Meowth and friends have saved me in more ways than one. For that they will be properly rewarded."
"With a plan like that, there will be plenty of time to bail" Jessie comments.
"I see no way the boss can fail" James added.
"Wobbuffett"
"So let's get da show on da road, we have preparations to do" said Meowth inspiring the other into action.
Opening the briefcase to see if anything in there can help, James finds four Pokéballs. "Strange, there are two Pokéballs on my side and two on Jessie's" he said as he pulled the two devices confused. Checking to see if they are empty, he opens one Pokéball only to have a Pokémon attach to his head. "Whoa, I haven't felt something biting my head like this since Carnivine."
Meowth sweat dropped. "That's cause it is."
"Mime mine"
"Mime Jr." Jessie stated. Seeing as how James received his old Pokémon, Jessie checks the other two Pokéballs as well.
"Seviper"
"Yan"
Happy to see her old Pokémon, Jessie runs towards them only to be dog-piled by them. "With you two hags and your old Pokémon, we will be unstoppable" Meowth stated.
Ash and Serena emerge from the changing rooms. They are both wearing a jumpsuit. Ash's is dark blue and Serena's is pink. "This sure fits the mood perfectly" said Ash checking out his jumpsuit. Looking over to Serena, he compliments her "and yours looks great too."
"Thanks Ash, you look great in that too" she replied receiving a cheeky smile from her friend. Heading over towards the Rhyhorn, Serena begins by demonstrating the proper technique for mounting a Rhyhorn. With a simple step, she leaps right onto the Pokémon's back with ease.
Serena made the step look easy, too easy in fact. "Now it's my turn" Ash exclaimed. On his first try, Ash ended up over estimating Rhyhorn's height and jumped over him landing face first into the mud. "I'll just try again" he said as he brushed himself off. Second time, he failed to reach the other leg over the Rhyhorn and once again landed face first.
Serena and Pikachu face-palmed themselves. Ash could jump onto Charizard's back with no problems but a Rhyhorn seemed to be too much. "So there is a trick to getting on a Rhyhorn" Clemont noted.
Not being one to be discouraged so easily, Ash gave it another go. "Okay foot here" he spoke to himself, "and swing this leg over and…" on the third try, Ash managed to mount the Rhyhorn. "Yeah, woohoo!" celebrated the trainer flailing his arms and legs in all directions.
"Rhy?" the confused Rhyhorn groaned. Unsure whether the kicking to his side was a signal to walk, run, or rear like a Rapidash, the ground type flailed around sending the trainer on top of him crashing down onto the ground.
"Ash, Ash are you okay?" Serena yelled as she frantically ran towards her friend.
"No need to worry" he said putting his hands beside himself. He attempted to use his arms to stand only to feel a sharp pain in his left wrist causing him to fall back over. "Okay…a little need to worry" Ash said holding his injured wrist.
Serena sighed. Ash was never one to really care for his own well being too much. As long as she was around, she would try her best to keep the teen under control. Reaching into her pocket, she pulls out a handkerchief and wraps it around Ash's injured wrist in an attempt to soothe the pain. Finishing tightening the cloth around Ash, she extends an arm to help the trainer up and notices his curiosity towards the handkerchief. "What?"
Smiling, Ash recognizes this handkerchief to a similar one he use years ago to help Serena. It had the same design, the same color pattern, and was the same size as the one he had given away long ago. Just these small details led him to discover the cloth's origins. "This is the same handkerchief I gave you when you injured your knee" Ash explained as he grabbed her hand to get up.
Looking again at his wrist, she could clearly see he was telling the truth. How this particular handkerchief ended up in her pocket was beyond her. Whether it was coincidence, luck, fate, or anything else, she knew it meant a lot more to Ash than he showed. How else would he instantly recognize the cloth so easily?
"Aww that's cute how you two are holding hands" Bonnie interrupted their silence. Realizing they were still holding hands, Serena quickly withdraws her hand from Ash's and blushes slightly. "How's your wrist Ash?"
"It's feeling much better thanks to Serena" he told the little girl. After convincing everyone his injury was only minor, especially Serena, he continued his Rhyhorn riding lesson. Once he received instructions and demonstrations from Serena, Ash quickly picked up on the whole Rhyhorn riding concept. Rhyhorn attempted to throw him off every once in a while. Ash managed to shift his body weight to balance himself on the Spikes Pokémon like a veteran Rhyhorn racer. Even his injured wrist proved to be no obstacle for him. "How am I doing Serena?" he quickly let out trying to check his progress.
"Keep your mouth closed, bugs could fly in it or you could bit your tongue" she gave advice. "Remember, you must be one with Rhyhorn" she yelled out thinking back to a time when she heard the same expression. Recalling back to when she was in Vaniville Town, she remembered her mother yell the same thing only with much more enthusiasm. Looking back at Ash, she saw the same enthusiasm as her mother. Even if becoming a Rhyhorn racer wasn't his goal, he still gave everything he had into learning a new skill. Even his best friend Pikachu was going along for the ride. Maybe that's why she found it difficult to find something to be passionate about.
"How was that?" he asked his friends while dismounting the ground type.
"It seemed like you got the hand of it" Clemont said.
"Yeah, even though I'm sure it hard, you made it look easy" Bonnie added.
Everyone turned towards Serena to get an opinion from her. Breaking her out of her trance, she replies "I think you are ready to win for sure."
On the outside, Ash put on a smile. In his mind however, he noticed Serena tends to space out a lot lately. He wondered what exactly was bothering her and if he could do anything to help. "Thanks you guys, but I want to race against the best" he said pointing at Serena.
She was certainly confused by the trainer's challenge. Did he really see her as one of the best? Overhearing their conversation, Calem walks up to the group hoping to get more insight into Ash's statement. "Pardon me, but if you are as great as Ash claims to be, participating in the race will no doubt add to the already challenging race" he told Serena. "By the way, how did you learn to ride a Rhyhorn if you don't mind me asking?"
Serena was in trouble. She could tell Calem had vast knowledge about Rhyhorn Racing and would no doubt recognize her mother's name. "My mom Grace taught me everything I know."
Calem was shocked to learn Grace's daughter was here. "Will you please compete" he begged. "Being the daughter of a great Rhyhorn racer, there is no doubt that you must have some natural talent."
Serena was hoping to avoid participating in the race altogether but with Ash requesting lessons, she couldn't deny him. Now he wants her to compete in the race as well as Calem. "Come on Serena, show these two what real racing is" Bonnie encouraged her. Although she dreaded the idea of participating, Serena didn't want to disappoint anyone. "Alright, I'm in" she agreed putting on a fake smile.
Everyone cheered when Serena decided to compete. Everyone except Ash, who could see right through Serena's fake smile. Out of guilt, he felt his heart sink. He was the one that caused her to feel this way. He decided to confront her about it but at a later time, away from Bonnie and Clemont. It's not that he didn't want them interfering or anything, but he felt responsible for pressuring Serena into a race she didn't want to compete in. Conjuring up the best attitude he could, Ash suggested they all rest. The sun was about to set, it was best if they all got rooms for the night.
Arriving at the Pokémon Center, Ash approaches Nurse Joy's desk. "Hello Nurse Joy, could you give my Pokémon a check-up" he handed the Pokéballs and Pikachu. Also needing check-ups, Serena and Clemont hand over theirs as well.
Nurse Joy received the Pokéballs and handed them over to her assistant Wiggilytuff. "Anything else I can help you with?" she asked.
"Can I get a room for four people please" Ash asked needing a room for all of them. The nurse reaches underneath the counter and hands over the key to a room. "Thanks" he walks off. Opening the door to the room, Ash falls on the bed closest to the door. "Man I'm tired" he groaned. After a day of nothing but training, his body was aching all over.
Equally tired, Serena walks over to Ash. "Aren't you going to shower first?" she asked standing over him. He had yet to change out of the jumpsuit.
"You can go first, I'll just wait for you to finish" he replied.
Serena grew annoyed with the trainer. He can be very stubborn sometimes. "In case you haven't noticed, this room has two bathrooms."
"Well what about Clemont and Bonnie?" he asked not even bothering to look up.
"You'll feel much better after a nice warm shower" she told the trainer poking his sides in an attempt to get him up. "Come on Ash, quit being lazy." With Serena constantly jabbing his ribs, there was no way she would allow him to have any rest. He returns the favor by also poking her in the ribs. "Cut it out, I'm ticklish" she said playfully swatting his hand away. While she was distracted, Ash quickly sneaks away into the shower without Serena noticing. Realizing the trainer is no longer around, she too goes into the empty bathroom and takes a shower.
In the lobby, Clemont and Bonnie are in the cafeteria eating dinner. "Hey Clemont, we never did find that blonde girl with the two Lucario did we?" Bonnie asked.
Thinking back to the day, Clemont realized they completely forget about that blonde rollerskater. Those Rhyhorn must've really been fascinating for them to forget their original intentions. "Oh well, I'm sure we'll run into her one day" he responded.
"That's too bad. I was going to ask her to be your future wife" Bonnie admitted. She saw something in her that she really liked.
"Bonnie, I told you to stop doing that" Clemont said annoyed by his sister's constant need to find him a bride. "It's so embarrassing" he added. Trying to stop Bonnie's old habit, the two begin arguing with each other.
From across the room, Calem sees the interaction between the siblings. In a way, it reminded him of his brother and sister. Finding the group rather interesting, he decides to go over and become better acquainted with them. "Good evening you two. Is it okay if I join you two?" he politely asks. Clemont scoots over and give Calem a place to sit. "Thank you" he gratefully says.
Bonnie thought back to earlier in the day when they met Calem. He claimed to be the event organizer for tomorrow. Maybe he would know something about the blonde roller skater. "Hey Calem, do you know who the girl with the two Lucario is?" she asked curious. Her intentions were simple. Find this girl and ask her to be Clemont's bride.
Clemont knew Bonnie's intentions. With no other choice, he used his Aipom arm to muffle any sounds coming from Bonnie. "Pretend nothing is happening" he told Calem. "But we are curious as to who she is. One of her Lucario kept starring at Serena for some reason" he explained.
Immediately, he knew who they were talking about. "You mean Korina. She was just walking the Rhyhorn. They sometimes get restless being behind that fence all day" Calem explained. With the whole Lucario and Serena incident however, he had no explanation for that.
As the night went on, Calem and Clemont spent much of their time getting to know one another. After sometime, Bonnie grew restless of listening to the two and began playing with Dedenne. Approaching their table was Ash who just finished taking a shower. "Hey guys" he greeted half cheerful. Seeing Calem and Clemont together, Ash takes the time to thank Calem for the chance to participate in the race. "Let's go Pikachu" he told his electric type walking out of the Pokémon Center.
"Something seems to be bothering Ash" Clemont pointed out.
To Calem, he couldn't really tell if anything was wrong. "How can you tell?" Calem asked wanting to know if he can help in any way. He met the group just today and already he wants to become friends with them.
"Normally this table would fall over from all the weight of the food that Ash would be eating" Bonnie explained. "It's weird because he didn't even complain about being hungry for once" she found rather strange. Even his usual greeting was lacking enthusiasm.
"Hey guys" Serena came also snapping everyone out of their trance. "Where's Ash, shouldn't he be eating right now?"
"That's the thing, he just left without grabbing anything to eat" Bonnie told her.
"Something must be bothering him" she thought to herself. For as long as she can remember, there wouldn't be a day when he would skip a meal. She just hoped it had nothing to do with his dad again. "I'm going to go look for him" she stated running off with a few snacks. Just because Ash didn't eat doesn't mean she won't either.
Calem looked over to the siblings. He was wondering why they weren't doing anything about Ash.
As if he read his mind, Clemont responded "Serena and Ash are childhood friends. If anyone can bring him back, it is Serena." Normally they would go help but he didn't want to leave Calem alone or drag him into a problem he doesn't need to get into.
Ash was currently walking to where they kept the Rhyhorn. He wanted to spend some more time with the Spikes Pokémon as well as think about how to bring up what he noticed in Serena earlier in the day. Finding the Rhyhorn he trained with, he saw that it was asleep. He decided it was best to leave it alone. He sure didn't want anyone to disturb him while he was sleeping. "Hey Pikachu, did you notice Serena's smile when she agreed to compete in tomorrow's race. She didn't seem all too happy about it."
Pikachu put his ears down in disappointment. He couldn't really help his trainer here since he didn't pay much attention to that matter. "Pika Pi Pikachu" he tried explaining to Ash as best as he could.
"I guess I could just ask" Ash said listening to Pikachu's advice. Thinking back in the day, Serena did say there was something else out here for her. Maybe that is what was bothering her.
"Hey Ash" the trainer heard someone call from behind. Looking back, he saw the person who he was just thinking about. "I heard you were out here and thought I would find you by the Rhyhorn." Knowing Ash's love of Pokémon, she could predict where to find him. Serena could only imagine what it felt like being a top priority to Ash. "Why am I thinking about this again" she told herself.
He couldn't figure out the best way to bring up what he had on his mind. The only thing he could do was to be direct about it. "Here goes nothing" he sighed. "You seemed upset about competing in the race tomorrow" he told Serena. Immediately thinking about what he just said, this was probably the best way he could ask. Looking at Serena, she just stood emotionless. "Or maybe it wasn't the best way to ask" he mentally slapped himself.
Serena had a blank stare. She never really expected Ash to actually care for her too much. The fact that he was able to catch such a small distress signal meant that he actually did pay attention to her. She was obviously touched that he looked out for her but at the same time, she too felt guilty for making him worry. "Don't worry about that Ash. Besides, that is why I'm on this journey to experience new things and hopefully find something that interest me" she said hoping it was enough to convince Ash.
Unfortunately for Serena, Ash could once again see right through her excuse. Then again, that probably was the real reason for Serena feeling down on herself. Maybe he was being too vague or just didn't give enough support. Whatever the case is, he would help Serena find a goal to work for. Putting his hand hands on her shoulders and looking her in the eyes, he was determined as ever to help out his friend. "I just want you to know I'll be here for you for whatever reason you may need." With his voice full of confidence, he wanted to make his intentions clear the first time. The last thing he needed was to cause the teen more confusion.
Serena had no problem understanding the message the first time. If anything, Ash gave off a strong aura that she seemed to find comfort in. With Ash's hands on her shoulders, she did what she thought was the best thing to do in a moment like this. She walked into his arms and returned the hug. This time however, it felt warmer than usual. Her heart rate was rising and she now knew why. What she originally thought was a little crush from back then was actually her growing closer to the Kanto teen. "Thanks Ash, you have no idea what you really mean to me" she mumbled. Quickly she realized what she said and wished she hadn't said that.
"What was that?" asked the teen completely unaware of what she said.
"Umm" Serena stuttered trying to find the right words. "I said you have no idea what that really means to me" she corrected herself. She sighed out of relief. Even if she had a better idea of her own feelings, the same couldn't be said about Ash. For now, she would do her best to keep them under control until she could figure out Ash's.
To Ash, Serena was acting very weird. Not having a goal to work for must really bring her down pretty bad. Looking down, he couldn't see his friend's face but knew she was happy. He couldn't describe it, but he enjoyed making her happy. Perhaps it was because they haven't seen each other in so long or maybe something else.
"Hey Ash" the blonde teen said slowly leaving the trainer's embrace. "I brought you some snacks" she said pulling them out of her backpack.
In an instant, the trainer snatched the snacks and began devouring them. "Thanks Serena, you are the best" he complimented his friend.
"Pika Pika" said the equally delighted electric type. He was enjoying the ketchup Serena had brought him.
"That's right buddy. Food always tastes better when you are starving" Ash told his Pikachu.
Serena quietly laughed to herself. Ash and Pikachu always seemed like they were starving by the way they ate, constantly and a lot. Looking around, she saw it was late. They had a race to compete in and she wasn't about to let Ash win due to fatigue. "Let's go back Ash. We have to be well rested for a race tomorrow" she said full of enthusiasm.
Hearing her voice full of confidence was a relief to Ash. Whatever he said seemed to cheer her up somehow. With Serena back in a cheerful mood once again, an idea popped into Ash's head. "I'll race you back to the Pokémon Center." Almost immediately, Pikachu jumped off his shoulder and got a head start on the trainer. "Wait" yelled the trainer. "I didn't say…"
"Start!" cried out Serena as she ran past Ash. "Get used to it Ash. Come tomorrow, you will be behind me like you are now" she yelled out playfully.
Ash heard Serena's comment as a challenge. Being the type of person that loved challenges, there was no way he was going to take it easy on her. "Just wait until tomorrow" he yelled back trying to catch up.
Meanwhile Team Rocket was watching the teens and Pikachu run off. They were busy digging a pit so they could capture any Rhyhorn that ran past their trap. "Aww, look at those two lovebirds" Jessie sarcastically remarked.
"Look behind us and you'll see more" Meowth replied.
Looking back, Jessie saw James with Carnivine biting down on his head and Inkay with his suction cups attached to his chest. Mime Jr. was in his lap sleeping.
"Ahh, it's been a while since I've received a relaxing scalp massage" James said about Carnivine.
Out of frustration, a vein popped out of Jessie's forehead. "If you could lend a hand, maybe we could get this hole dug faster" she yelled at James.
"And if both of you dopes can shut ya traps and begin working, we could be done even faster" added Meowth.
Jessie obviously didn't like it whenever someone talked back to her. She released Seviper from her Pokéball. "If you don't begin working, I'll have Seviper use poison tail on you" she pointed at James. "And if you don't stop talking back, I'll have Seviper remind you who is the stronger Pokémon here" she told Meowth. Putting down the shovel, sparks begin surrounding Meowth. "Please you think your thunderbolt scares us" she laughed. "Seviper, show Meowth what real power is by using poison tail" she casually said. Obeying his trainer, Seviper unleashed its poison attack on his old friend.
Refusing to be pushed around by Jessie, Meowth uses thunderbolt on Seviper. Both attacks collide in mid-air causing an explosion which then sends the Team Rocket members flying off into the sky. "We were so close to finishing too" Jessie complained.
"Well someone just had to go boohoo" Meowth replied mocking Jessie.
"I remember these good old days Carnivine, don't you?" James added.
"We're blasting off again" Jessie and Meowth said simultaneously.
"Wobbuffet"
"Mime mime"
Morning time came and everyone was busy preparing for the day ahead. Serena and Clemont were cleaning up the room to avoid leaving a mess for Nurse Joy to clean up. "Is Ash even awake?" asked Bonnie.
"Pikachuuuuuu" screamed the electric type letting out a thunderbolt. Bonnie sweat dropped. That answered her question.
"I'm awake" Ash replied hearing Bonnie's question. He fell back over from the paralysis he had received from the thunderbolt.
"Again" Serena said surprised by Ash's habit of sleeping in. It's not his habit of sleeping that surprised her rather than sleeping in knowing there is an event coming up. As mature as he may seem, Ash was a kid at heart. There was no changing that and she wouldn't have it any other way.
Finished with their morning preparations, the group heads over to the racetrack. Clemont and Bonnie sit in the stands along with all the other spectators while Ash and Serena head over to the stables to select their Rhyhorn. "Hey Rhyhorn. Are you excited for today's race?" Ash asked the Spikes Pokémon from yesterday.
"Rhy"
Looking towards the trainer, Serena sees that Ash was able to mount Rhyhorn without difficulty. He didn't even get thrown off like the day before causing him to injure his wrist. Mounting her Rhyhorn, Ash and Serena make their way towards the starting line. Being an unofficial race, there were eight other people participating as well.
"Good afternoon everyone and welcome to this year's unofficial Rhyhorn Race" the presenter announced. "I am your host, Calem, and I ask for all the competitors to please line up at the starting line" he spoke. Everyone complied with the request. "While we wait, you can see what it going on in the race with this giant screen. We have placed cameras around the track to let see the action firsthand" he explained. "The track consists of one loop around with a few twists and turns and well as hill. The winner of the race will receive a protector, good for evolving Rhydon into Rhyperior." Calem walks away from the track to begin the countdown. "When the horn goes off that is the signal to begin the race. With no more delays, let's begin the race. 3, 2, 1…" Calem puts the airhorn to the microphone and signals the race to begin.
Right out the gate, Serena and three others fight for the number one spot. "Go Serena" the siblings yell out. Ash however has trouble with his Rhyhorn flailing around. "Looks like Ash could use some more practice" Bonnie stated.
"Hopefully he'll be able to get Rhyhorn under control soon" Clemont replied.
Sure enough, Ash managed to finally begin the race. Hoping to catch up to the other racers, Ash spurs on Rhyhorn signaling him to go faster. At the other end of the race, Serena is still fighting for the lead. Neither of the three has given an inch to the competition and weren't planning on it either. Unknowingly enough, Serena and the three other racers tripped a booby trap signaling their position to Team Rocket. "Alright Inkay, cover up all the cameras with your ink" James commanded.
Within moments, the screen displaying the race went black. Immediately, Clemont and Bonnie knew something was about to happen. Frantically they left their seats in hopes of finding the two teens unharmed.
Half-way through the race, Ash was still far from the racer in front of him. Serena on the other hand finally managed to break free from the pack and take the lead although not by much. Up ahead, all the racers stop when they see a strange sign directing the race deeper into the forest. "Seems legit" one of the racers says as he heads down the 'marked' path. Serena reluctantly follows suspecting someone purposely sabotaged the race. "They would have said something before the race bega…" Sure enough, she managed to fall into a pit along with the other three racers. "Who would do such a thing" she asked no one in particular.
Soon enough, the four remaining racers fall in the same pit, trapping them with everyone else.
"Prepare for trouble, we would do such a thing"
"And make it double, consider the success this will bring"
"To protect the world from devastation"
"To unite all people within our nation"
"To denounce the evils of truth and love"
"To extend our reach to the stars above"
"Jessie"
"James"
"Team Rocket blasts of at the speed of light"
"Surrender now or prepare to fight"
"Meowth dat's right"
"Wob Wob Wobbu"
"Mime Mime"
"Team Rocket, I should've known it was you" Serena lashed out. Only seeing eight racers, she was hoping Ash wouldn't fall in the pit as well.
"Now den, you Rhyhorn hold still while I retrieve ya" Meowth said while getting each Pokémon with an extending arm attached to their air balloon. One by one, the Rhyhorn were lifted out and placed in a cage that was also attached to the air balloon. Thinking through his plan, Meowth was smart enough to add thrusters to the balloon. The hot air alone was not enough to lift the weight of eight Rhyhorn. "And dat's da way da cookie crumbles" he stated as Team Rocket fled.
"Bunnelby, use mud shot on the thrusters" Clemont called out. The Digging Pokémon destroyed both thrusters causing the balloon to slowly lose altitude. Clemont didn't want to pop it for fear of causing injury to the Rhyhorn. While Team Rocket was occupied, Bonnie and Clemont helped pull out the other racers. Once everyone was out, Serena, Bonnie, and Clemont ran in the direction the balloon had crash landed hoping to free the captured Rhyhorn.
"As always, you had to screw up the plan Meowth" Jessie blamed the Scratch Cat Pokémon.
Instead of arguing with Jessie, Meowth initiates his backup plan. Holding a small remote in his hand, he pushes a button which gives the cage containing the Rhyhorn wheels. "You were saying" he arrogantly responds.
"Let's get out of here before anyone returns" Jessie corrected herself. They all hop onto the cart fleeing once again.
"Chespin, use seed bomb" Clemont commanded as soon as he saw the rocket trio.
"Let us handle this" James said. "Carnivine, cancel out that twerpish attack with bullet seed." Sending out a barrage of seeds from his mouth, the attacks collided in the air canceling each other out. Suddenly, the cart shakes violently throwing James crashing into the cage. "Hey what was that for Meowth?"
"It wasn't me" he said mashing buttons desperately trying to regain control of the vehicle. Looking at the other end of the cart, Meowth sees two holes have trapped the vehicles. "How did that happen?"
"Bunn"
"Way to go Bunnelby" Clemont yelled out praising the normal type.
"I hate it when the twerps do that" Jessie said while sending out her Seviper. "Use poison tail on that Bunnelby."
"Sevvvv" hissed the poison type. Seviper's tail began glowing purple as it swung and hit Bunnelby.
The Digging Pokémon faints instantly and Clemont recalls him. Since when did Team Rocket become so strong? And what's with the change in their outfit. Ignoring those lingering thoughts, Clemont planned on holding out until Ash arrived assuming he didn't get lost. Clemont ordered Chespin to use seed bomb once again. "Dedenne you help out with thundershock" Bonnie jumped in as well. Serena, as well as the other racers, were left out of the fight since they left their Pokémon back with Calem.
Back at the detour sign, Ash was currently debating on whether or not he should trust the arrow or not. From what Calem said, the track was one loop. Taking the detour would only cut across the forest in a strange rectangle pattern. Pikachu's ears twitched and his cheeks began letting out sparks. "Pika Pikachu" he pointed in same direction as the arrow.
"You want me to take this path?" the trainer asked his Pokémon.
Pikachu nodded. He couldn't exactly say why, but he heard what appeared to be a faint distress signal. That and his cheeks sparking up meant whatever was ahead couldn't be too far.
Unleashing a thundershock, the electric type attack was redirected towards a Rhyhorn. Being a ground type, it had no effect. "Nene" the electric type looked on confused.
"Haha well what do you know? This Rhyhorn's ability is lightning rod" James pointed out.
"What a lucky break" Jessie added.
Essentially, this rendered Dedenne powerless. With Bonnie no longer able to battle, it was up to Clemont to put a stop to Team Rocket. Letting out Charmander, Clemont hopes this will turn the odds in his favor. "Use ember on Carnivine, while Chespin, you use tackle of Seviper." Charmander's ember was countered with bullet seed. Both attacks canceled each other out. Chespin on the other hand managed to land the tackle without problems.
Irritated by with the trio, Jessie orders the Fang Snake Pokémon to use wrap on the grass type. Using his vines, Chespin was able to maneuver his way around the poison type. "That's it, use poison tail and show it why no one messes with Team Rocket." Pushing the grass type onto the ground, Seviper thrusts his tail intending to hit Chespin.
"Block it with iron tail" said a voice from behind the group. Looking back, Ash finally reached the group. He dismounts Rhyhorn who was angered at the sight of his fellow ground type locked up in the cage.
Pikachu deflected what could've been a super-effective attack for the grass type. "Now hit it with quick attack" Ash commanded. Normally he would've had Pikachu use his electric type attack but being surrounded by nine Rhyhorn, Ash assumed there was a pretty good chance one of them had the lightning rod ability.
Seviper was thrown back to his trainer's feet from that quick attack. With Pikachu recovering, James took the opportunity to attack it. "Use bullet seed on Pikachu." Shaking himself off, Chespin launched a seed bomb to cancel out bullet seed.
With Carnivine distracted and Seviper down, Clemont saw an opening. "Charmander, use ember on Carnivine once more" he commanded.
"Charr" screeched the fire type landing a direct hit on Carnivine. The super-effective attack was enough to knock out Carnivine. The Rhyhorn that was not captured used horn attack in an attempt to free his friends.
"Great, what else can go wrong?" Jessie asked rhetorically being pessimistic about the situation. As if someone decided to answer her question, the cage shook and threw the Team Rocket members onto the ground. "But how…" Surrounded by angry Rhyhorn, Jessie could predict what was about to come next. "Haha hey, we were only joking" she tries to calm down the Rhyhorn.
On Rhyhorn were stomping their feet on the ground preparing to deliver the finishing blow.
"Yeah, can't we just solve this by talking" Meowth said with slight nervousness in his voice.
"Get ready guys, we are about to go flying" James said putting his head down in disappointment.
On cue, the Rhyhorn charge at Team Rocket. Soaring through the air, Team Rocket yells "We're blasting off again."
With the threat finally gone, the Rhyhorn return to their respective partners. "I'll see all of you at the finish line" Clemont said recalling all his Pokémon. He leaves with Bonnie to allow everyone to continue the race.
Back on the Rhyhorns, every racer, including Serena, gives each other a knowing glace. They all nod meaning they understand each other's message. Being completely new to the art of Rhyhorn Racing, Ash is completely clueless as to what went on. Even more confusing was the fact that they all were traveling at the same pace towards the finish. "Come on Ash, let's all cross the finish line together" Serena said asking the trainer to do the same. To Ash, this was still a race. Still confused as ever, he opted on respecting their decision instead of trying to 'win' as he originally planned.
At the start/finish line, Clemont was busy explaining the situation to Calem. Before Calem was able to contact Officer Jenny, Clemont assured him the problem had been taken care of and the race had resumed as planned. Still on the fence about the whole Team Rocket incident, Calem thought it was best to take Clemont's word and hope for a happy ending. Hearing a familiar sound, Calem sighed out of relief. The racers were returning just as he said. "And he folks we have the first batch of racers making their way towards the finish line" Calem narrated for the crowd. Seeing what appears to be a wall of Rhyhorn, Calem squints in order to confirm what he sees. "Folks, it seems here that all the racers are quickly approaching if I am correct."
With the racers in sight, the crowd began cheering their return. Hearing the cheering of the spectators, the racers began picking up speed to give the crowd an exciting finish. Even though they pick up speed, they all remained in a line ready to cross together. Moments later, all the participants rip the ribbon at the same time. "Wow, so they decided to cross the line together despite all the hardships. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the true spirit of good sportsmanship" Calem spoke.
With the race all said and done, it was time to announce a winner. With everyone crossing the line at the same time, it was hard to decide a winner. With any hesitation, all the racers anonymously vote on Ash as their winner. "It is with great honor that I present to you the winner of this year's Rhyhorn race. Ash Ketchum" Calem said presenting the Protector to the trainer.
Even if all the praises were for him, Ash felt as if he couldn't accept the prize. He walks over to Clemont and hands over the prize to him. "If it weren't for you, Team Rocket would've escaped with all the Rhyhorn" Ash explained to the confused gym leader.
Clemont was shocked. Never before had he won a sporting event, much less Rhyhorn Racing, and here he was holding the prize to a race he didn't even compete in. Also agreeing with Ash, the other racers lift the two into the air praising them both.
Observing the interactions, Serena realizes she has misjudged Rhyhorn Racing. Not only are the Rhyhorn very protective of their partners, the competitors also have a high level of humility. If only she had seen it sooner. Although Rhyhorn Racing wasn't a priority on her list of goals to work on, she now had a new appreciation for the sport and it was all thanks to Ash.
Also observing the interactions was Calem. Ash and his friends certainly left a lasting impression on Calem. After talking to Clemont in the cafeteria last night, it became clear just how much they all cared for each other. How he longed for friends like them. But at the same time, he feared their reactions if they knew his secret. Hopefully one day, their paths will cross again and he could grow closer to the group. "Maybe one day, we can all set aside our differences and truly become friends."
And now for the much anticipated announcement. Who here is excited for the World Cup? I know this has absolutely nothing to do with this story but I just can't help myself. There is to much hype and rumor has it that this will be the most competitive World Cup yet. In other news, Japan has chosen Pikachu as their mascot for the World Cup. They even have a Pokémon Soccer team that consists of the three Kalos and Kanto starters, Pikachu, Meowth, Pancham, Litleo, and Helioptile. And for those that don't know much about soccer, Japan is probably the best Asian team competing. With players like Kagawa and Honda, they are certainly able to keep up with teams like Italy and Paraguay. But I honestly can't see them winning the world cup. Yeah sorry but the team I am choosing to support this time is Germany.
Before I stir up controversy and have the reviews looking like the comment section of any Youtube video, I will now direct your attention to my next announcement. Okay I really don't have another announcement. Well I do. After re-reading my story, I have decided to combine chapters 2, 3, and maybe 4 into one chapter. I am even thinking of combining chapter 5 and 6 together but I'm not sure yet. Just thought I'd let everyone know. What happens if one day you see less chapters in the story? Anarchy. Haha just kidding.
Next Chapter: The Parfum Palace Siblings
I want to post a date of when I will release the next chapter but that didn't work out too great for me. Instead, if you still have faith in me as a writer that delivers, I will try to update as soon as possible. As always, thanks for all the support you have given me.
