"Hi, what are you doing?" Serena asked getting under the covers next to Blair and snuggling up to her best friend.
"I'm playing the baby soothing music so he'd let me sleep comfortably for a few hours," Blair said tapping the tip of the headphone she had on her stomach.
"Baby keeping you up all night?" Serena said smiling and Blair sighed. "Isnt that supposed to happen after he's here?"
"He's moving so much that I can't sleep," Blair said frowning at Serena's smiling face. "What's got you up at 2 in the morning? I know for once it isn't me because I am being very quiet."
"Nothing," Serena said hugging a pillow to her body and sitting up cross legged to face Blair. "Did you know that I got married and divorced all in the space of your pregnancy?"
"That's pretty funny," Blair said chuckling. "I never actually thought about it like that, but the wedding happened right after I found out I was expecting."
"I did something stupid yesterday," Serena muttered and Blair shot her an 'aha I knew it' look.
"Do tell," Blair said with a smirk playing on her lips as she adjusted herself so she was sitting more upright on her bed.
"Don't look so happy," Serena grumbled. "I told Nate about my talk with Dan and how I felt about him yesterday ... or the day before that, whatever its not morning yet."
"Finally," Blair said letting her head fall back against the pillows behind her as she laughed. "Took you long enough to be honest with the world, and our Natie, why did you wait so long to tell me?"
"B, I'm trying to be serious here," Serena said frowning at her sister-in-law.
"I am serious," Blair said shaking her head. "Do you know how long we were waiting for you to finally come to your senses and see that Nate loved you and that you loved him, I'm sure even Humphrey could see it."
"Blair," Serena warned.
"I'm not trying to be mean S, but the eye sex and the way the two of you were with each other," Blair said raising her eyebrows at Serena. "Humphrey is not blind or stupid unless I've been overestimating him, he knew as well as we did what was going to happen."
Serena just glared at Blair and thought back to everything she passed off as nothing.
"Serena, Nate's too nice to try and take you away from something you really wanted and you were too happy living in that fantasy bubble of yours to look at the big picture," Blair said shrugging. "We've had this conversation more than once over the past few years and it's finally sinking in that you have not been listening to your heart."
"When did you get all sappy on me," Serena asked with tears in her eyes. "I feel like I've lost so many years and everything that I've done to deny this is going to come back to bite me."
"It probably is honey," Blair said and Serena gave her a sarcastic look. "Hey you come to me for honesty."
"Yeah well now I'm regretting that," she said jokily and Blair gently pushed her.
"So what did Nate say?" Blair asked and Serena looked up at her confused. "When you told him you loved him I mean, he's not here and you aren't with him so I'm assuming something went wrong."
"Well he didn't actually say anything," Serena said biting her lip and looking away.
"What do you mean, he didn't say anything its Nate," Blair said as if it were obvious that he would immediately sweep her off her feet. "What did you do?"
"What did I do? He's the one in a relationship," Serena said and Blair shot her an 'I know better' look. "Ok, I left the office before he could say anything."
"Why would you do that?" Blair almost screeched.
"Ok maybe I should have waited to tell you this," Serena said. "All this stress is not good for the baby."
"Serena," Blair growled and the blond immediately stopped and took a deep breath.
"Do you think I stand a chance against this new great relationship he's in? I mean why would he want the girl who has always run from him over the girl who just wants to be with him?" Serena asked quietly, they'd only been dating 2 months but Serena was sure the other girl didn't play around with Nate's feelings the way Serena did but never meant to, Lauren was probably sure about her feelings and Nate needed someone like that.
"I'm going to tell you something that I have told Jenny and Vanessa and I might have screamed it to Dan once a long time ago," Blair said and Serena raised an eyebrow. "You and Nate, that's mythic, no-one messes with that and survives."
"You think we're mythic?" Serena asked biting her lip and smiling shyly in a way Blair had only seen her do a few times back in high school when she was unsure of herself.
"Yes I do and if I know Nate, that relationship you are so worried about is already over," Blair said and then grimaced before Serena had a chance to respond.
"What's wrong?" she asked, immediately grasping her best friends hands. "Contraction?"
"No, I don't think so, it doesn't feel like a contraction, although it's been 5 years since I've last had one," Blair joked gently prodding her stomach. "He better make himself comfortable until Chuck comes back."
"Chuck will be here soon, he'd be here now if he could," Serena said loosening her grip on Blair's hands.
"I know but this baby could come any minute now, he could have let one of the other partners go sort it out," Blair said frowning. "I'm just frustrated and him not being here is adding to it."
"Do you think you are going to be able to get any sleep?" Serena asked and Blair shrugged. "You try, I'm going to get out of your way."
"Thanks S," Blair said as Serena got of the bed. "Hey Serena, it'll all work out, even if Nate isn't the one you work it out with."
Serena smiled and switched the light off, going back into her bedroom and flopping onto the bed, maybe she had some things to think about.
"Aunty S, Aunty S, Aunty S," Henry screamed jumping on top on Serena.
"Oof," Serena huffed as she opened her eyes with a start and grabbed the little boy. "What's the time?"
"I dunno but the sun is up," Henry said giving her a big smile.
"But I want to sleep," Serena complained covering her head with a pillow. She didn't feel like she had any sleep at all. "Sweetie, aren't you supposed to be getting ready for your play date?"
"I am ready," Henry said laughing and Serena picked the pillow up to look at her nephew all dressed up and ready for the day.
"Your mom is going to be mad at you for creasing your outfit before you meet your friends," Serena warned playfully and Henry giggled.
"Momma's asleep, she won't see me," he said laying onto his back next to her. "How long until the baby gets here?"
"A few more days, your mom is waiting for your dad to get home first," Serena said twisting slightly so she could look at the little boys face. "Are you excited to have a little brother?"
Henry didn't move or say anything for a moment until finally he shrugged and looked up at her. "I guess it would be better than having a sister," he said and Serena smiled. "I can teach the boy how to play soccer, if I have a sister I'd have to play dress up and have tea parties."
Serena bit down on her lip to stop herself from laughing at the disgusted look on Henrys face as he thought about having to do girly things. "Girls can play soccer too," Serena said and Henry gave her a disbelieving look. "Yeah you're right, if you had a sister your mother would keep her far away from all things sporty."
Henry giggled and nodded.
"Are you going to be ok when everyone is fussing over the baby and not only you?" Serena asked playfully poking Henrys side. He was an only child for almost 5 years now, it would be an adjustment.
"Aha, when Momma and Daddy and grandma and gramma Lily are busy with the baby I'll still have you and Uncle Nate to play with," Henry said looking at her with those big doe eyes of his. "Right?"
"Of course you will," Serena said brushing his hair back and placing a kiss on his forehead. "That's not going to change Henry, there's just going to be a new person in the house."
"I know," Henry said scooting closer to Serena so he was completely pressed against her side. Serena put her arm around him and rubbed his back the way she knew he liked, she saw him adopt this exact position with Blair before but she was much too tired and uncomfortable to cuddle right now and Henry didn't mind using his aunt as a substitute.
"Miss Serena have you seen... " Dorota started when she knocked on Serena's door, she stopped when she saw Henry and Serena lying on her bed. "Mr Henry, Gale look all over for you, she thought you kidnapped."
"Henry," Serena laughed. "Didn't you tell Gale were you were going to be?"
"Oops," Henry said slowly pressing himself closer to his aunt.
"Come on honey, go find Gale before she has a heart attack," Serena said waking up and picking Henry up with her. "I'll meet you out there in a minute," she called as Henry left the room with Dorota.
Serena wondered if Gale would ever be as good as Dorota was, Gale was hired to help Dorota around the house, with Henry and allow Dorota more time to go home and spend with her family, but Dorota was around so much that Serena didn't think Dorota or Blair actually used or trusted Gale for what she was hired for.
Serena got herself ready for the day and went downstairs to find Blair already up and moving around.
"What are you doing?" Serena almost screamed because Chuck instructed her to keep Blair off her feet as much as possible and Blair hated that rule.
"I'm going downstairs to check on my son, what does it look like I'm doing?" Blair snapped and Serena rolled her eyes and gently turned her friend back toward her room.
"You know what Chuck said, back to bed," Serena said.
"But S, I need to do something, I was practically walking down the runway the day before I had Henry," Blair complained.
"I know but its different this time," Serena said and Blair rolled her eyes, if she or the baby were in any danger the doctor would have induced labor or told her to stay in bed. "And yes I'd rather not have my brother kill me for not following his rules."
"If Chuck doesn't get back here by tomorrow morning, there will be two divorced woman in this house," Blair gritted out and Serena just nodded, holding back her amused smile.
"I'm going to bring Henry here and tell Dorota you're ready for breakfast," Serena said quickly. "No divorce thoughts for you until my brother actually does something wrong."
"Hey who's side are you on," Serena heard Blair scream as she speed walked toward the stairs in search of her nephew.
Three hours later Serena was flipping through a fashion magazine in the conservatory, she left Blair in the other room after her yoga instructor left, Serena giggled every time she thought of Blair dong yoga, the only time she ever did was when she was pregnant because it was supposed to be soothing but it just got her more irritated with every pose she tried to do.
Gale had taken Henry out for his play date and Dorota was busy in the kitchen so Serena was bored, she had way too much to think about and not enough emotional strength to think it all through so instead she focused on shoes and ignored everything else.
The elevator pinged and Serena looked up confused, she was pretty sure Blair would have been pacing if in front of the elevator if Chuck was coming home, Henry wasn't due back for another 2 hours and everyone else that they knew was either working or not in the city.
She heard Dorota in the kitchen so she slowly got up and went to see who it was and stopped dead in her tracks when she saw Nate standing there staring at her.
"Hi," he said smiling nervously.
"Hi," she whispered, not exactly sure what he was doing here, it had been two days since they last saw each other and she rather stupidly spilled her feelings to him. She assumes maybe this is how he felt when he did the same thing to her earlier that year and she winced, how many untimely mistakes can one couple make?
"I came to check on Blair," he said clearing his throat and Serena's heart sank but she smiled and nodded because Blair was one of his best friends as well, of course he'd come to check on her. "Where is she?"
"Upstairs," Serena said tilting her head in the direction of the stairs. "I can go get her if you want."
Serena turned and was about to make a quick exit when Nate grabbed her wrist, "Wait, before you go," he started tugging at her wrist so she would face him again. "Can we talk first?"
"If this is about the other day I'd rather not," Serena said looking down and shaking her head. "It was silly of me to just spring all that on you when I was having a bad day."
"Seems to be the trend with us nowadays," Nate mumbled and Serena smiled because she was thinking the exact same thing just a little earlier. "How are you feeling?"
"I feel ... like it's been 5 years and I'm back to that place where I'm single and staying with Blair and Chuck and she's pregnant and unbearable," Serena said chuckling and Nate smiled as well. "Do you ever wish you could go back and get those years back?"
"No," Nate said shrugging, tracing the curve of her wrist and she looked down to see that he hadn't let go of her wrist yet and she hadn't even noticed. "I feel like I grew up in those years, learnt some important life lessons."
"Oh yeah, like what?" Serena asked in a teasing voice, her eyes still glued to his hand on her wrist, gasping when he used that hand to pull her closer so that she collided lightly with his chest, his other arm wrapped around her waist to hold her in that position as she looked up quickly to meet his smiling eyes.
"Like if I don't move quickly I might let the things I really want slip out of my fingers ... and get married to someone else," Nate said tacking on the last part with a grimace on his face and Serena bit her lip and looked away.
"What about Lauren?" she asked, remembering what she and Blair spoke about that morning.
"What about her?" Nate asked slyly, his eyes dancing. He laughed when she turned to glare at him and shook his head. "She was a great girl but she was never the one I wanted or loved, I ended things the afternoon after our last Godparent date with Henry."
"Back then? But when we spoke and you accused me of still having Dan," Serena said shooting him a pointed look and Nate smiled sheepishly. "You said you still had her."
"I didn't want to seem pathetic," Nate said softly, dropping his head. "I brought her with me to see you and Henry so I wouldn't have an opportunity to confront you and make a fool out of myself by asking about Dan like I did in my office and I realized that this girl is not the girl for me no matter how hard I tried to put her into my life."
"Yeah?" she asked and he nodded. "So who is the girl for you?"
"You might know her," Nate said with a little smirk and Serena rolled her eyes. "She's gorgeous, legs for days, long hair, these deep blue eyes that never leave you and she's caring and sweet and super confident."
"Really?"
"Oh definitely," Nate said, giving her a 'how can you not believe me' look. "The only problem is that she's been running away from me for years, but I think she's finally succumbed to my charm."
Serena burst out laughing, "She sounds like a lot of work," she managed to get out.
"Oh no, she's perfect," Nate said looking straight into her eyes and holding her gaze until she blushed and looked away. "Although right now she's going through a little bit of a rough patch but she'll get out of it, she always does."
"Who is this crazy girl?" Serena asked, gasping as the hand holding her wrist came up to cup her face, tilting it so he could look into her eyes.
"You, always you," he whispered and Serena melted right there in his arms.
"You think I'm all those things?" Serena asked and Nate nodded. "You think I'm perfect?"
"Never fails to amaze me exactly how perfect you are," he said and Serena blinked back tears, she never thought coming back to Nate would feel like this.
"You were never here to check on Blair were you?" she asked giggling as he dipped his head down a little closer to hers.
"Of course I did," he said squeezing her waist. "I was just hoping I'd run into you as well, it all worked out well."
"Too well," Serena mumbled as his lips hovered above hers.
He was about to kiss her, finally, after months when Blair's voice drifted to them, immediately breaking them apart because of the urgency in her voice.
"Hey lovebirds, I hate to break up this up because I've been waiting for it for years but my water just broke, I need to get to the hospital, now," Blair said as demanding as ever but also a little scared and Serena and Nate both froze. Uh oh.
A/N : Hi guys! So compared to all the other crazy update times I've had, I think this is actually pretty good time for me, how are you guys doing? I hope people are still interested in this story because there's still one more chapter left and if anyone is interested I want to do a one-shot epilogue/sequel kinda thing
I personally loved the final bit when Nate and Serena finally get their timing right, I didnt feel like it was too cheesy but I wrote it after I handed in a very tough assignment so mu brain was a little mushy and happy hehe but reading it again its giving me lovey dovey feelings :D
I hope Serena's talks with Blair and Henry were good as well, my favorite line in the GG series was when Blair told Vanessa in season 1 and Jenny in season 3 that Nate and Serena were mythic and "You dont mess with that and survive", ever since she fell in love with Chuck shes been their biggest shipper along with Chuck and I love it
Until next time (^^,)
As a How I met your mother watcher I feel like I should comment on the finale so if you havent watched it dont read this
HIMYM let me down so badly, I loved everything until that final episode, they built up Robin and Barney so much just for them to fall apart and I adored the mother, I never thought I'd love someone who came in so late in the series but she just had so much chemistry with everyone in the cast that it was amazing. I understand that they filmed the kids reaction in season 2 and this would have made sense back then but after 9 seasons the ending was just the biggest let down since Dan and Serena's wedding. I'd love to know your reactions to the ending if you watch it as well whether you agree with me or you loved it
