A/N welcome. Enjoy.

Previously: He lifted up his note pad and looked through his report. "It says she was moved to room 103".

Room 103

"Hey, I just heard from Bolano he doesn't see anything that is broken but there is a dislocation. He wants to put you under to reset it but they have had a few emergencies tonight so nothing is open." Paige was walking out of the bathroom where she had changed into the gown they gave her. Luckily, Jess had put her in clothes that were easy to get off. She couldn't get her arm through the arm sleeve though so it hung over her awkwardly. She felt awkward asking Michael for help but luckily Jess walked in. As she opened the door, she was twirling the phone in her hands.

"hey Michael can you give us a minute?" Paige had a feeling this could end badly.

"Of course, but they moved someone in here so you might want to quiet. They are behind the partitions in the back." As the door closed, Paige couldn't bring herself to look up at her aunt. Jess saw how pitiful Paige looked and felt bad. Her hair was still tied behind her head but it looked like she was in a sac with only one arm through her sleeve and the gown barely coming to her knees. Paige tried to make herself more comfortable in the outfit but every movement made her whence in pain.

"Let me help you." She laid the phone on the bed and began maneuvering the thin gown to where Paige's arm slid through. "Better?"

"Much." Paige smiled.

"Good, because now we have a lot to talk about."

"Jess I'm tired. Can we please figure this out tomorrow." She sat down on her bed and hoisted her legs up.

"Paige do you even understand what all is going on right now? There are police all over this hospital asking questions. There are three girls from Rosewood telling me that a violent attack happened on that train. Emily is somewhere in this hospital because of that attack and you are sitting her because you protected her. Is there any part of what I just said that is wrong?" Paige shook her head. She didn't know all the police were here but she expected it.

"What in the world have you gotten yourself into? When your mom told me that weird things happen in Rosewood, I didn't believe her. Paige it has been less than a year and you have been in the hospital twice because of Emily."

Paige's head snapped up at the accusation, "This is not her fault."

"I'm finally understanding why your parents did what they did."

"What do you mean?" Jess had realized she let more slip than she needed to. "I just mean moving away and trying to give you some space."

"That shouldn't be there decision." Jess laughed and put her hand on Paige's leg.

"Paige what do you mean it is not their decision? You are their daughter and were almost killed, now twice. I get I don't have kids but I would have done the exact same thing. No matter what you think you have with any of those girls it is not as important as your life." Paige brushed Jess's hand away.

"If I wouldn't have been there that night, she would be dead. If I wouldn't have been there tonight, she would be dead. I would risk my life a hundred times over if it meant that at the end of the day she was still breathing."

"Paige you aren't even around her anymore. What if she has moved on? Then what are you doing? You are a kid you don't even know what love and loss are."

Her voice had grown loud but with those last words she could barely speak. It was like she had been bottling it up for so long and it was finally out there.

"Do not tell me I don't know what loss is. Do you know what it is like looking at yourself in the mirror and not realizing how you got that way? Seeing a scar on your face but not knowing how you got it? Seeing a picture of someone that you don't even know or you knew in passing and having your heart fall to the floor? Because if you don't know this feeling if you have never heard your name come from a complete stranger but out of their mouth it sounds like God has called you and the world is right, then you cannot tell me what I know." She lost her breath but she refused to stop.

"I may be a kid but I have lived through more than most people could dare to dream of. And for that matter I have lost things that I will never get back. You want to know why I would save her, no matter what?" She didn't wait for a response. "Because I can. Even if I don't ever get to be with her again, I will not lose her. There are things I can't protect or save. My memories, my relationship with my parents, hell I can't even save myself but I can save her." Paige had nothing left of herself. She had finally laid everything out there.

"How are you so sure when you can't even remember who she was to you?"

"I don't know. It's a feeling that I can't shake. When I first woke up in the hospital and she was there I thought she was an angel. I knew Emily before but not like that. She was Ali's friend and she was popular. That's what I remembered. But when I saw her, memory didn't matter because I felt this connection to her. It scared me. It still scares me. All this time, I am caught between my parents and my heart. The keep on telling me that Emily lured me up into the damn light house. That I only knew her from swimming and that she used me. They hate using her name though. It's only that girl or Fields. That story has never felt right. None of it makes sense. Why would I have been there in the first place? Why would I have trusted Emily? Why would I have saved someone I didn't care about?"

"Paige not everything is black and white."

"You may be right but this shit seems to be some other color. I want you to look me in the face and tell me Emily is bad. You already let it slip that I had a relationship with her so tell me, what happened that night." Paige held her in a stare.

"Paige…"She got on the bed even closer than she had been before. "I don't know. They won't tell me and I don't ask. You are safe that is all I have cared about."

"But I'm not happy." Paige began to cry. She had held her resolve up to that moment but there was nothing left to hold her wall up so it came tumbling down. Paige was about to say something when the door swung open.

"Where is she?" A woman crashed through the door.

"Ma'am please, your daughter is fine we are just keeping her here for observation. There are other people around."

Paige was still crying but she raised her head because the voice sounded distantly familiar. As she looked up, her privacy curtain was drawn back.

"Where is Emily?" The woman blindly was tearing through the room when she got sight of who was behind the first curtain. Their eyes met briefly before a faint voice could be heard in the back of the room "Mom?"

Paige's body froze. The emotions she began feeling couldn't be put into words or actions; she just felt numb. She closed her eyes and images flashed before her. She was in a white kitchen and across from her stood the same woman who was also at the foot of her bed. She was laying out breakfast. The next flash was in the same room but the woman was holding Paige's hand mouthing to her. The scene was muted to Paige but the woman made her feel comfortable.

"Paige?"

Paige was brought back to the present but she couldn't forget this woman. Jess thought Paige was having a bad affect to the medicine. The woman rushed to the voice she had heard and pulled back the curtain. Emily was laying there with various machines hooked to her monitoring.

"Baby, I was so worried. No one would tell me what happened. I was so scared." She held Emily even though she didn't have enough strength to reciprocate the hug.

"I love you too."

During the whole scene, Paige was still reeling from the images she was getting back.

"Is that…" Paige finished Jess's question with a nod. This was the perfect situation though. She was in close quarters with the person she has been trying to understand for weeks. This meant that she may finally get the answer she needs.

"Jess, you should go get some rest or something. I'm fine here."

"There is no way in hell I'm leaving you here, alone, with them, alone."

"Please, I need to get myself together." Jess reluctantly stood up and started heading to the door.

"Here's your phone. It's been buzzing in my pocket for the last bit. Oh and your parents think you fell off a horse." Paige grabbed the phone. "Nice cover." Jess winked and walked out the door.

The doctor who had ran behind the woman had somewhat repositioned the curtain but Paige still had a good view into the back. The woman must have been Emily's mom. Back in school, she had never seen Mrs. Fields before, or at least she never remembered seeing her before. It was a small town and she remembered her dad talking about how much he hated Mr. Fields but they never interacted. She was whispering in Emily's ears and rocking her. Emily was slowly gaining her strength now that she was conscious.

"Mom, I'm okay." She smiled at her mother hoping it would calm her down.

"Em I don't know if I can do this anymore. Every time I answer the phone, something else happens to you. I don't understand."

"I'm so sorry Mom. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I didn't mean to do this to you. I shouldn't have even gone out tonight." She held her mother's hand.

"What happened? I want to know the truth."

"I had been talking to this girl all night and she kind of ran away because of something I said. I tried tracking her down but I just couldn't find her. This guy said he saw her go up towards the front and offered to show me because he worked there. Then he just attacked me." Emily left out some of the big details about why he attacked her but it didn't change the raw facts.

"Do you remember anything else?"

"The last thing I remember is being launched to the ground because someone ran into him while he was trying to choke me."

Pam was trying to keep her composure but she couldn't believe this was happening again. She thought that all of this was just a freak accident but trouble was attracted to her daughter.

"Someone? Do you know who, can I thank them?"

"No." Emily lied. She knew exactly who it was. Although everything was a blur, she couldn't forget the masked figure that came to her rescue. Pam looked at her daughter more closely.

"You're lying. I know when you lie Emily, I'm your mother." She sat down on the bed by her side and looked her in the eye. "Who are you trying to protect?"

"Mom drop it, I'm fine, it's over."

"We are not going to drop it. This is your life. If your father was here he would…"

"I don't want to get her in trouble!" Emily wore herself out.

"So you do know. Who was this girl, why were you talking to her all night if you didn't even know her."

"It's not like that. She had a mask on and I didn't recognize her at first but I do know her."

"Emily you spent the evening with a complete stranger?" Emily realized how large of a whole she had dug herself.

"Please just listen to me. Stop assuming you know everything that happened. I thought I knew her from the beginning but I couldn't put my finger on it. So yes, I talked to her. Then I said and did something and I just…" Emily wasn't sure what she knew. It had to have been Paige. She felt it but she couldn't understand why it was such a secret. Or why Paige chose that moment to come back into her life. And where she had been all this time. And why she sent such a hateful letter.

"I know the girl. And she saved my life. That's the end of it."

"I want a name." Emily laughed to herself. "No you don't."

"Emily I am your parent. When I ask you something, you answer me. You almost died and you think this is some kind of joke. This is the second time in less than a year that I have been in a hospital not knowing what is happening to my daughter. If you take it back a little farther we could add a few more times. This isn't funny, this is your life." Emily got the message.

"Paige." Pam's face dropped. Paige, listening to the whole conversation, became nervous. Emily knew. Emily's mom knew. The police would know. Her parents would know. In the end, she would never see the light of day again. While she was pondering her thoughts, the door opened and closed.

Paige tried to peek around the curtain but it was drawn in the wrong direction. A doctor started approaching Emily's bed. He reached out his hand to her. "Hi, I'm doctor Bolano."

"Hi. I'm her mom Pam. Are you the neurologist?" The doctor looked confused.

"Neurologist? Did you have a brain injury as well? I thought you were having your arm set."

"I'm sorry but my daughter doesn't have a dislocation."

"I'm so sorry ma'am. I was told this room. I'm assuming then you are not a miss Paige McCullers?" Emily stared wide eyed at the doctor. "Excuse me?"

"I'm here to treat Paige McCullers. It says in her chart she should be in this room." Paige knew she had to either speak up or pretend to be asleep. Either option wasn't exactly appealing at the moment.

"That's me." Her voice couldn't be very much heard behind her hide out. Through the crack in the curtain she and Emily made eye contact and the shock in Pam's eyes was mirrored in her daughters.

Dr. Bolano drew back the curtain so everyone was in plain view. "Hi, I'm Paige McCullers."

a/n this chapter was awful. It felt terrible writing it and I just didn't have that spark because there is a lot that needed to be built. I am trying to get out of the hospital as quickly as possible. Trust my plan, it is there. A is about to be a real bitch and tensions are going to be higher than ever but there are going to be some moments that are going to take your breath awa y (I hope).
