Things should have been working out today for the young doctor. With how life had been treating him, things shouldn't have been as hectic as they were. Patients coming in, left and right, and of course J.D getting stuck with the most critical one's, because Dr Cox had decided that they were to bothersome for himself. To top it off, most of these critical's died. There were three car accident victims, most likely from the same car crash, two drive by victims, both definitely from the same drive by as they had been brought in at the same time, and then top it off there had been a hit and run victim. A young 16 year old girl.

And in all truth, with all this barrage of victims J.D had really started to hate cars. Most of all because of the fact that just about all of those poor people could have been avoided if cars had never been invented.

"J.D, Mrs. Vanoulis is crashing."

Carla was out of breathe, but her voice was hardly over a whisper as J.D looked up at her from the couch. Like she could see the hopeless cloud that hazed over his eyes, and that she was afraid that if she said it too loudly he break right then and there.

Terrific.

J.D couldn't help the sigh that passed over his lips as he stood up from the couch, but the moment his feet were on the ground again he was moving. His hand moved up to clutch at the stethescope around his neck as he briskily pushed pasted the nurse and flew off down the hall. Carla was at his heels as he buzzed into the room, pushing Elliot out of the way as she attempted to hand over the paddle's towards him. Despite Elliot's usual need to be at the forefront, she all but knew never to get between J.D and his patients in this kind of situation. He needed this. And she knew it.

That was why she happily stepped backwards to allow the man his space.

Well, at least this day can't get any worse.

In the end the patient had died, it was no surprise to J.D really, in fact...he had come to expect it. Like it was a curse, he saw himself as the grim reaper, cackling over every patient he received. No one stood a chance.

But like usual, he had not choice but to go and tend to his other patients...and act as if everything was fine.

"Newbie, what in the hell do you think you're doing?" J.D looked up from the coffee in his hands, his eyes locking with Dr Cox.

"I'm...taking a break?" He muttered as he glanced around, but none of the other occupants of the hospital's coffee shop were paying them any attention.

"And what in God's name, gave you the idea that you could "take a break" now?"

"Well, I did, I decided that I needed one..." He knitted his brows together, but the other doctor could still see the fear that rested behind the bravado.

"Really now? Because here I was thinking, that if was ever a moment of your time that was away from a patient, I'd think that you'd be spending it actually trying to improve on mastering the skill called "being a doctor". That way you could actually walk around here wearing those scrubs and that name tag without me having to worry about someone mistaking you for a competent human being."

And though it was simply one of Dr Cox's usual rants, and one of his usual actions of putting his anger off on someone, today was just not a day for usual. Cause life had rung out any hope I had left, had stomped and trotted over me and then proceeded to use him as a rag to clean up the bathroom stalls of life. And God there was so much shit in life.

J.D stood up suddenly, the chair behind him falling backwards as his hands slapped the table. "You know what, Dr Cox? I won't take this, because I believe, no I know I'm one hell of a doctor. But you wouldn't know that right? Seeing as you're never around other then to ridicule me. Besides if I'm so bad then why do you keep shoving off all your patients on me? Maybe if you actually went and took care of your own patients instead of pawning them off on someone else, then maybe you wouldn't be standing here with the extra time to rant either. Or maybe even I'd be the one with the extra time to rant to you while you took one of these "unneeded" breaks."

He could see Dr Cox's jaw clench as he tried to hold back his anger, his eyes widening just a fraction of the way in surprise and anger.

"And just so you know, I didn't have to take these patients of yours, I could have simply declined, and told you to take care of them yourself. So, maybe you should stop criticizing me and actually appreciate all that I do for once, cause I don't think there is one person in here that cares about you, and puts up with as much crap from you, as I do."

Yep, not a usual day at all.

Dr Cox stood there for a moment, his mouth opening and closing, his expression faltering between pure rage and disbelief. J.D took that moment to push past him, deliberately smacking into the others side as he shoved open the doors. A surprised Lavern stumbled backwards as she practically earned herself a face full of glass door, her eyes quickly darting inside the coffee shop and then after the doctor. She felt like she had just missed something big...damn her timing, she was running low on gossip at the lunch table.

Two more patients had crashed on him today, making a grand total of 6. Luckily he only had an hour left of this agonizing shift.

So, he had taken it and his sorrows to his usual spot.

"Newbie, you know...you should really find a new place to sulk. " Dr Cox stepped into the dark break room, a scowl on his face, arms crossed over his chest. His shadow cast down across the floor as the light filtered in through the hallway.

"Yeah..." J.D muttered without glancing up, he was sprawled out on the couch, his head turned to the side so that his eyes directed towards the floor, seeing the pants that could be seen from beneath the older doctor's white coat. He could see the others sneakers sticking out from beneath his pants, one foot impatiently tapping the ground.

He half expected the other to just turn and leave him, or to go off on another rant. Especially after the way he'd snapped at the other earlier, he knew it was coming. No one got away with talking to Dr Cox like that.

Instead there was a short sigh before he watched the man's feet make their way over to him. Dr Cox picked up his own sorry excuse for shoe's, tossing them to the floor, J.D finding himself toppling over from the force as he rolled off the couch. Ignoring the other, Dr Cox simply stepped over him and took a seat on the couch.

"Okay...ow." J.D rubbed at the back of his head as he stood to his feet, directing an annoyed look at the man. "You could've just asked me to move."

"Yeah..." Dr Cox made a small attempt at as he pulled on a pout for show. It took J.D a moment before he realized the man was making fun of him by mocking his earlier response.

With a scoff J.D rolled his eyes, a slight shake of his head as he threw his hands up. "I don't have time for this."

He moved to leave the room.

"Stay. Nancy." Dr Cox's words caused the man to still, his back turned to the older doctor, satisfied the doctor continued. "So you're telling me that you don't have time for me...but you have time to sit around and sulk?" The man raised an eyebrow, one that J.D couldn't see, but knew was there none the less.

The question should have caught him off guard, he should have known that going off on Dr Cox twice in one day was a bad idea, but the tone in the others voice just caused something in J.D to snap. "You know what, yes. Actually, I do." He spun on his heels. "Now, get your ass off my couch!" With a sudden relapse in judgement J.D slammed his foot into the other doctor's side, with a surprising force that actually pushed the doctor over and into the arm rest. Luckily not onto his ass and on the floor, otherwise J.D really would have been in for a world of hurt.

Dr Cox turned a glare onto the other as he pushed the man's foot back to the floor. He was sure there was going to be a bruise on his side later. His jaw cracked under the force of his clenched jaw, standing to his feet as a snarl passed his lips, a finger jutting out and jabbing into Newbie's chest. "Now listen here, you ungrateful little-" He stopped mid-sentence at the look he received from the other.

Usually the other would look scared, would cower under his anger, look hurt like a scolded pup. But there was a fire there instead, a determination there that showed he wasn't going to take any more crap from the world today. But under it all, quite evident in his face and posture...was defeat. Pure and simple. A look that just couldn't be hidden.

God, I'm such a sucker.

He sighed. How could he yell at a kid who looked like he was ready to jump out the next window he saw? Or be the next post office shooter? He sighed.

"Listen, Newbie.." He started again, as he tried to calm down his nerves, taking a deep breathe. "I know I usually come in here to rant at you...actually...that's exactly what I'm going to do. It's me. It's what I do, and you know that better than anyone. So...just sit there and listen like the good little Newbie you are, because this rant...will be the only one of its kind that I will give you." He waited. Just in case the other was going to blow up again, but when he simply slouched, his shoulder's drooping as he turned and fell back onto the other couch.

Dr Cox took a moment, debating on whether or not he should stand there. Finally he gave a small sigh and plopping down beside him, his arm automatically moving to stretch across the back of the couch. "You're a doctor, doctor's make mistake's, their human." He muttered, his eyes focusing on the wall opposite them. "Their made that way, and sometimes...even when you don't make mistake's patients die. There's just no way to stop that from happening. And no matter how many people died today...none of that was your fault." Finally he turned to look at him, his hand moving to clutch at the back of the couch, fingers digging into the fabric. "I know you think that I pushed off all my patients on you because I'm just lazy, or I just didn't want to deal with them, because you know me, I just ha-ATE those sicky people, but..." His mouth opened, his brows furrowed as he stared at J.D, the male turning to look up at him from beneath his lashes, his upturned eyes not making this any easier. "I didn't." His tongue darted out to lick at his lips, his eyebrows slightly raising before his left eye twitched. "I did it because you're a better doctor then me-in a way-" Dr Cox quickly threw in at the sudden look of awe that crossed J.D's face. "Because, even though all those patients died, I know for a fact that you haven't yet thought about quitting as a doctor."

J.D turned a stare down at the floor, a hint of a smile pulling at his lips. "Yeah..." He finally admitted, as he seemed to realize that exact thing himself.

"But me...Newbie, after that third person had died, I would have been out that door without a second though. But you're not selfish enough to think that. You're to occupied on not letting that happen to the next next guy that that thought doesn't even cross your mind. And that's...what I like about you. It's what makes you a good doctor. It's...why I trust you with my patients...it's what makes me need you." The admittance let a bad taste in his mouth, and he bite back the retort that he wanted to speak just to cover it up. Instead he squinted at the other, cocking his head to the side. "Do you understand now?"

"Yeah. Actually, I think I do." J.D suddenly found a smile crossing his face as his eyes turned to stare fondly at the ground, but after a moment it dropped away. "I just..." He shook his head turning his eyes up towards the ceiling as he let his head fall backwards, Dr Cox's arm tensing at the contact. The others ridiculous fluffy hair brushing against his arm with each move of the others head. "What in the hell did I do to deserve this? I mean, I thought I was finally having things look up, you know? And then...Kim has a miscarriage...I can't drive because of a stupid S.U.I, I mean that one's just unfair...my brother's living with me, and oh, did I mention I'm living in a tent on a porch?"

Dr Cox was about to tell him to "grow up" but there was a more pressing question that came to mind. "And Dan is living with you?"

"Oh yeah, he's not allowed in the tent...not after the first night..." J.D blanched at the memory, and that Dr Cox wasn't stupid enough to ask about. "So...he's now stuck sleeping on the lawn chairs."

"Just...stop talking..." Dr Cox pulled his arm out from behind the others head as he stood up.

J.D pouted as he watched him leave, calling after him before he managed to get to the door.

"So you like me?"

Dr Cox stopped in his tracks, glancing back to find J.D smirking at him. The man studied him for a moment, a look crossing his face that J.D couldn't quite make sense of.

"...something like that..."

Dr Cox left into the hallway, leaving J.D to his lala land.

"Stupid kid." The man shook his head, shoving his hands into his pockets. Something coarse brushed against his hand and he stopped, his fingers wrapping around the tickets. "Shit-" Dr Cox cursed as he pulled out the papers. He still hadn't asked the kid...the tickets had been sitting in his pocket rotting away for the last three days, and the trip was in two...

"Hey Sarah!" Dr Cox quick stepped...cause there was no way the other was so eager that he actually ran, back towards the door, stepping into the dark room again but never actually continuing into the room.

J.D glanced up at him, a look of confusion placed on his face.

"I'm dragging you to that conference with me." Dr Cox held up the two tickets in his hand as he watched the kids eyes grow wide as they fell onto the slips.

He had an instant to think before the kid was on his feet, and he suddenly found himself with an armful of newbie. The kid had practically tackled him, though the doctor only stumbled back a bit with the impact. Regardless the doctor had tensed under the contact, freezing as J.D pulled away momentarily.

"Wait...does this count as a compliment." He raised an eyebrow.

"No." The doctor stated rather bluntly, prying the other off of him. "But that rant did."

J.D frowned at the loss of contact, but he also understood the look that he was getting from the other. The fact that he was lucky he was still standing after the first time, but if he tried it again he probably wouldn't even manage to get within an inch of him before he was out on the floor.

He should just be lucky he got the first one. The younger doctor finally shrugged his shoulder's, the wide smile still pulling at his lips. "Works for me."

Okay...it didn't exactly turn out like I wanted it too: See I based the chapter after a few short things I had: one was the rant, I have ideas for rants and this was one of them...so I made it into a HUGE compliment XD, and a small sentence that had popped into my head:

J.D grinned up at the other. "So you like me...a little, right?"

No you idiot...

Dr cox shook his head in disbelief before muttering "...yeah..."

I love you.

But of course, the whole I love you thing, is too sappy and uncoxian for me, so...I changed it up.

The chapter didn't come out to great. I think to issue is just the fact that I haven't written in a while. I actually...pretty much stopped writing COMPLETELY while I was taking my break XD. And I lost my groove XD

XD, I was looking at my story traffic and I was surprised to see a 100-200 vistor average XD, I didn't expect so many, thank you for all those who still even read this while I was away!
