"Danny!" Steve yelled as he pulled out his gun and ducked next to the car. Glass covered the front seat of the car. Heart pounding, Steve tried to gauge where the shot came from and was afraid when Danny didn't answer.
"Danny? You alright? Hey, talk to me." When no more shots rang out, Steve quickly made his way to the passenger side. Danny was leaning against the inside frame of the car with his eyes closed. As Steve careful pushed his friend back on the seat he noticed blood on Danny's forehead. Quickly he surmised that Danny had hit his head on the frame as the shot blew the window out.
Steve pulled out his phone to call for an ambulance when Danny groaned and moved his hand towards his head. "Danny?" Steve hesitated and grabbed his friend's arm. "Hey, you with me?"
"What the hell happened?" Danny asked slowly. Blinking his eyes open, he noticed the concerned look on Steve's face. "What's wrong? You alright?"
"I'm fine. You hit your head and cut it on the door frame." Steve dialed 911 to request a paramedic unit even as Danny was shaking his head no. "Sorry buddy, but you were out for a few seconds so you're getting it checked out."
Danny closed his eyes a moment. When he reopened them, he spotted the window. "What the...? Wait, I remember hearing a shot." Glancing around he looked questioningly at Steve.
"It was a set up. Only one shot fired." Steve answered. Just then, they heard sirens rounding the corner and two police cruisers pulled to a stop.
"Steve, what's going on? We had reports of a firearm being discharged in this area." Sergeant Duke Lukela asked as he ran up to the men. "Is Danny hurt?"
Danny got out of the car brushing glass off his clothing. "No, I'm okay Duke. Someone decided to take a pot shot at us." Danny looked around for possible hiding places as he spoke.
As Duke told his men to spread out and look around, another siren was heard and the paramedics pulled up. Tim Cook knew both Five-0 officers and walked up. "Danny? Looks like I need to check that." he said lightly touching near the wound. "Anybody else hurt?"
"No," Steve told him. "Danny hit his head on the door frame after someone fired at us."
"You're lucky they missed." said Tim's partner, Maggie Snow. As the two paramedics led Danny to the back of the van, Steve called Chin to tell him what happened.
"Kono and I will leave and be there in about fifteen minutes." Chin said as he tapped on Kono's office window.
"No, Chin, it's alright. Danny seems to be fine and Duke's here with his men. They're scouting the area now. No need for you and Kono to come out." Steve said. "We'll be back shortly after they're done with Danny."
Minutes later an officer came back. "Commander? No sign of the sniper, but we did find this taped to the window of the Ferrari. The car's owner didn't know anything about it." Holding out his hand he handed Steve a tan envelope with 'Detective Williams' typed on the front.
Steve recognized that it was the same size and color of the one Danny had taken off the windshield of the Camaro. He had also seen Chin delivering one to Danny in his office. Glancing towards his partner who was still being checked by Maggie, he nodded his thanks to the officer who moved away.
With another look towards Danny, he turned the envelope over and ripped it open. Inside was a single slip of paper. Quickly reading it, Steve found it was a job advertisement for the position of detective at a police station in St. Louis, Missouri. "What the hell…?" he muttered. Anger coursed through him when he realized the underlying threats that Danny had kept from him.
Steve walked over to Tim, who was packing his equipment away. "How is he?"
"He'll be fine. He's got a slight cut, but it doesn't need stitches and I don't see any signs of a concussion. Head wounds always bleed making them look worse than they usually are." the man replied. "He'll probably have a headache for a while though." Steve breathed a prayer of thanks and said goodbye.
Danny was leaning into the Camaro brushing glass off the seat when Steve walked over. He was experiencing an array of emotions and trying his best to control them. His head was pounding and he started to shake realizing how close that had been. He could not believe the bitch would do something like this when she knew that more than likely Steve would be with him. He recognized it was just another warning as if they'd wanted to kill him, they wouldn't have missed.. But accidents happen. What if Steve had been in the passenger seat? My god he thought, What if this had happened somewhere else and Grace had been with me? Leaning against the side of the car and breathing deep he closed his eyes.
Steve walked up to Danny and held out the envelope. "What is this?" he asked firmly.
Danny's nerves were frayed and he jumped when he heard the voice. Seeing what Steve held in his hand, he reached out and grabbed it. "Obviously it's an envelope, Steven. Where did you get it?"
"One of the officers found it taped to the Ferrari." Steve replied. "What's in it?"
"Well since it's been opened, I'm sure you know what it is. I see it's addressed to me though, so the question I should be asking is why its been opened?" Danny wasn't in a pleasant mood at the moment and his words were laced with sarcasm.
"What I want to know is who's been sending them to you? I know you've received at least three of them. How long has this been happening and why haven't you told me what's going on?" Steve asked upset that Danny thought he could hide something like this from him. When Danny silently stared back, Steves patience snapped. "I'm waiting for an answer and I want it NOW."
Danny had enough. He had been on edge for several months, put up with being injured and was sick of Doris's attacks. Without any more indecision or regrets of hurting Steve, he blurted out, "You want to know who's sending them? Ask your mother! And while you're at it, ask her if she had fun trashing my apartment and slashing my tire?"
Steve blinked before fury overwhelmed him. "What are you talking about?" He asked. "I don't believe this. Why would you blame my mother?"
"Because she's the one behind it." Danny spat back. "You can also tell her that couple she's had following me in that SUV doesn't know a damn thing about tailing someone."
"You're nuts, Danny. My mother wouldn't do anything like this. Where do you get off even thinking something like that?" Steve said gesturing towards the window. Furious he added, "I suppose you're going to say she was the one that tried to poison you too."
Suddenly Danny's finger was poking him in the chest. Duke and several other officers stopped what they were doing and stared at the two friends in disbelief.
"Tried Steven? Tried? If you remember, not only was I poisoned, but a man died." Danny said his voice getting louder.
"Knock it off right now Danny!" Steve growled as he took a step back.
Danny realized he was saying things in a way he would regret later, but at the moment he was too upset to stop. "I didn't want to tell you...thought she'd back off. I mean, I didn't want to see you get hurt, but she's crazy, you know that? Crazy! No, insane is the better word. No wonder your sister is all screwed up. It's like Doris thinks it's a game. I know she's behind all of it. Hell, she basically admitted it to my face and if I had anything that would hold up in court I'd arrest her and lock her away."
The next comment was out of Danny's mouth before he could stop it. "You and Mary would both have been better off if she'd stayed dead!"
Before Steve knew what he was doing, his fist shot out and hit Danny hard on his jaw. Surprised, Danny fell back on the side of the car; the force of the blow catching him off guard. Both men stood staring at each other and breathing hard. Danny's face showed hurt and disbelief. Steve couldn't believe that he had hit the man he considered his brother. Pain exploded in Danny's head as he tried to breathe through the pounding in his skull.
Neither one spoke but when Steve realized what he had done, reached out. "Danny...?" He said hesitating.
Danny recovered and schooled his face into a stony mask. Holding up his hands, he stepped away. "No... You know what? I'm sick of always looking over my shoulder waiting to see what she or her cronies are going to pull next. What if Grace had been in the car with me when this window was shot out? Do you realize how easy it would have been to just kill me instead throwing another threat at me? Maybe that's what the intention was this time and someone just had bad aim."
Taking a deep breath, Danny walked around the car to the driver's side trying to control his shaking hands. "Well I'm tired of it! I didn't say anything to you because it was your mother. Your mother, Steven! But I've finally had it. She wants you to join her precious agency and me to disappear? Quit 5-0? Fine! Tell Doris she wins. I quit!"
Upon saying that, Danny settled in the driver's seat, started the car and sped off leaving Steve staring after him, the broken glass crunching underneath his feet.
