Chapter 10- Another World Falls
Sawyer didn't come back. Matt shared his thoughts about the outbreak with me, saying it was probably a experimental virus that got out of hand and spread. I would agree with him there. Even I had thought that the outbreak was something along those lines. Even though I did like it when my mind wondered and it went to the possibility of alien invasion or supernatural causes.
Matt asked about different things to pass the time. About my past, my friends. It did pass the time, I must say. Soon, Matt yawned and said that he would have first watch and that I should get some shut eye. I didn't want to tell him about the whole insomnia shit, so I nodded and laid down with my face turned to the wall. I listened to Matt scribble down in his note book as I thought about Zac and Emma. We have been together for some time. We are the Fubar trio. Nothing came between us. I thought about the reality of this all. I don't know where they are now, if they are dead or still going strong. The same can go with my family...
I shook my head.
No, I'm not going to cry. I'm making a stand now. I'm making it through this, I'm finding Emma and Zac and if I'm going down...
I'm taking the undead with me.
Time went on. The peace of the room was something tranquil. Even the sound of the outside was quiet. The zombies sung their dead symphony as the night lit up the street. It was unnaturally nice to the point I could close my eyes and pretend that nothing had changed. The peace was broken in a instant when the door of the room was smashed open. I snapped my eyes open. I lifted myself up and turned to the room. Sawyer's stared into the room, his eyes darting around the place. His face was white, eyebrows scrunched together, mouth in mid yell. After that everything was like it was playing in slow motion.
A deafening roar of fury and pain rumbled the room and the hallway it was coming from.
Matt swerved round on the chair he was sitting on, reaching for his bag, throwing the note book in and then reaching out a hand towards me. Subconsciously, I moved forward and reached out to grab his hand. But before I was able to intertwine our fingers, Sawyer rushed forward and grabbed me by my side and lifted me off the bed all together with one arm, his shot gun clenched in his other. I clawed at his jacket to give myself some support as I got jolted around. I turned myself onto his hip, like a child. Sawyer grabbed the already outstretched hand of Matt and pulled him forward to the window. Stumbling slightly, Matt grabbed the pane of the broken window and jolted it up, the sticking out glass cutting deeply into his skin as he threw it up. Matt gritted his teeth and let out a muffled grunt as he headed straight out of the window frame. I looked behind Sawyer, to the room, as he started out the window.
A monster met my gaze. It was huge, it couldn't get through the door frame of the room. With a mighty force, it smashed it's body at the wall, making the plaster crack and dust cover the floorboards. Roaring a thunder, the beast broke the wall down, fragments of plaster send flying in all directions. The monster casted it's milky white eyes at me, its bottom jaw missing, but its tongue dangling like wet laundry on a breezy day. It had balloon like mussels that covered its body head to toe, making it's head seem small in comparison. The monster roared, showing me down its cavernous throat as the thunder hit my ears. It moved forward like a gorilla, hands on floor, hopping along, the floorboards creaking under its weight to the point that you could see them bend with strain. Something about it seemed familiar. A huge hand threw itself at Sawyer, in a attempt to grab him. I cried with fear as Sawyer moved forward and the hand skimmed across my face.
Everything sped up after that.
Matt sprinted down the metal fire escape, Sawyer close behind him, turning round the corners and moving down. Another building stood close the ours as it towered over us, the moon shining down the small crack between buildings, giving us some light. Another roar came from behind us. I looked back again to see the beast throwing itself out the window, smashing it into little pieces. It looked around franticly. It saw us darting down the metal frame. With a furious roar is leaped onto the metal framing, sending it into an earthquake under Matt and Sawyer's feet. With cries from the men they steadied themselves. Matt looked up at the monster and mouthed a 'Fuck me' at the sight. Sawyer moved ahead of Matt, hitting him slightly with the butt of his shottie.
"LESS SIGHT SEEING AT THE THING THAT'S GOING TO KILL YOU AND MOVE YOUR ASS!" He bellowed. Matt's face seemed to turn another shade whiter as he nodded and tightly held onto the straps of his backpack.
"I've never seen a Tank that big!" Matt Squeak-shouted.
Sawyer nodded with a grunt.
"He is a biggie! Guy must have been on steroids prior or some shit!" Sawyer chuckled darkly. I turned my gaze back to the roaring gorilla.
A Tank. That's the thing that was drawn on the walls. Back in the safe house. Fitting name if you ask me.
The Tank stomped and thrashed around. The metal walk way was too small for it to move comfortably. Every moved it made, the stair case would creak. This thing wasn't going to last long if he keeps doing that. We needed to move faster.
"Sawyer!" I yell, finding my voice. "He's going to kick us down with the walk way at this rate!" Sawyer looked over to me as I clung to his jacket. With a nod, he looked around as he scaled down the metal stairs. He stopped dead. Matt ran into the back of Sawyer with a yelp. Sawyer pointed to a open window across from us. The metal flooring jolted a second time, with a crumbling sound coming from the brick wall it was affixed to.
"Matt, can you make that jump if I help you?" Sawyer shouted as we dropped slightly on the metal.
Matt looked at the scale of the jump and the drop. He gulped and looked up at the Tank that was having a hissy fit above us.
"I can't really say no here, can I?" He swallowed. Sawyer shakily grinned as he put me down to lean on the railing. I put some weight on my ankle and instantly took it off as pain rushes through me. Sure the swelling has gone down, but it's still sprained. Sawyer linked his hands together and rested them on his leg. Matt moved back slightly, took a breath and ran forward yelling. Matt stepped up before he got to Sawyer placing his foot onto his palms. Sawyer yelled and heaved his hands up, sending Matt high in the air. Matt yelled through the air, like a majestic eagle with Tourettes syndrome. Matt swung his arms in the air and made an 'Oof' sound when he smacked into the open window, the wooden frame knocking all the air out of him. Sawyer punched the air as Matt pulled himself up into the dark and gave a shaky thumbs up.
Sawyer looked down at me with a hopeful twinkle in his eyes. I smiled up at him. Once we all make it over there we'll be alright. Sawyer lifted me up from under my arms.
"You ready, kid?" He grinned.
"I must warn you. I got kicked out of flying school for reasons that will be obvious as soon as you throw me." I grunted, not really fancying the feeling of being thrown and smacking into the wall. Sawyer chuckled and just told me to focus on Matt. I looked over my shoulder at Matt who was keeping an eye of the rampaging Tank above us while hanging over the side with an outstretched hand, ready to catch me. With a sigh, I gave a nod to Sawyer saying I'm ready for my flying lesson. Sawyer nodded back and turned me around, facing Matt.
"On the count of three, Kid. You stretch out and I'll throw you, a'right?"
I gulp and nod, feeling my stomach sink. If I fuck up here, I could fall and break my legs. I would be useless. In that situation, I think I'll ask Sawyer to shoot me down.
"One.." Sawyer breathed behind me.
I tensed my legs.
"Two.."
I narrowed my eyes at Matt's outstretched hand.
"Three!"
A quick prayer and I was hurdled through the air, my legs kicking out behind me, my mouth open, expecting a yell to leak out, but it never did. I saw Matt's arm getting closer to me. I lashed out to grab it. Matt grabbed my fore arm and I skidded down slightly, only to be held as I clung my hand around his wrist as he did the same. Matt heaved moving backward and pulling me up with him. Matt grabbed my shirt when I'm close enough and pulled me in the room fully. I flopped onto the floor and lifted my head up to look around. The room was bare with nothing but some empty boxes in a corner next to a metal rod. There was also a body crumpled near a white closed door, with no legs. They looked like they were ripped off. After my scan I lifted myself up, keeping pressure off my ankle I hope back to the window. Sawyer waved at me from across the drop. I laughed and tell him to get his fat head over here.
"Cheeky bitch." He chuckled. The laugh is cut short as a roar from the rampaging Tank above shows that times up. Sawyer took some steps back and began to run at us. The Tanks jumped heavily into the metal fire escape and it finally caves. The whole metal skeleton shudders as the wall supports creak and give way from the broken brick of the building. Sawyer leaped up onto the railing and kicked off swinging his arms in a windmill like motion, with the shotgun still in hand. I could tell already that he won't make it. The stairs had already began to fall. The look of horror washed over Sawyer's face as he fell short of the window.
"Sawyer!" I yelled. I threw myself out the window. I felt Matt grab my ankles as I latched onto Sawyer's wrist with both hands. A monster of a roar came as the metal fell and the Tank went down with it. I felt myself get pulled, not doing any good for my ankle. I could hear Matt groaning and yelling at me. I looked down at Sawyer. His narrow blue eyes were full of bewilderment as Matt ever so slowly pulled us both up.
"You would have been kicked out from flying school faster than I did." I winked at him.
Matt pulled me in the room. He grabbed my waist and pulled as I do. Sawyer slithered through the window into the dark room. We all fell to the floor taking quick breaths. We all looked at each other. One by one we started to laugh. After a few minutes we're crying and holding our sides.
"Let's do that again!" I whooped. Matt laughed and then stopped suddenly.
"No." He said face serious.
"Bugger." I giggled. His face scrunched up.
"God damn you. You even curse British." He hissed.
I put on my most poshest voice.
"That's right yer git" I quipped as he rolled over to contain his fan boy squeak. I looked up at Sawyer as he wandered to the window. He whistled at the wreckage below.
"We got lucky there, guys." Sawyer turned to us. "Tomorrow we're getting out of here and..." His voice trailed off as his face dropped. I raised an eyebrow and looked to where he was looking. We both looked at Matt.
"What's up?" He asked. A moan came from behind him. Sawyer yelled at Matt, but it was too late. The body by the door had dragged itself to Matt. With a cry, the zombie was on top of him. Sawyer darted forward trying to praise the zombie off from Matt. He tried kicking him, the zombie kept trying to press his face into Matt's flesh. Sawyer pulled at the zombie's head. He yelled, for some reason. Maybe out of frustration.
I hopped as fast as I could to the metal rod. I picked it up as Matt started to scream. I turned to see the Zombie taking mouthfuls out of his arm. I gritted my teeth against the pain and used both my legs to run to Matt's aid. I screeched as I swung the rod around and knocked the undead away slightly. I raised the rod over my head and swung it down as hard as I could. I carried on even when the undead was not moving.
"Kid..." I heard Sawyer say when I carried on hitting the dead zombie. I didn't stop. "KID!" Sawyer yelled grabbing the rod in mid swing. I froze, panting hard. He looked down at me with sad blue eyes. I let go of the rod. The pain in my ankle was numbing. Sawyer dropped to one knee and hugged me tightly. I don't know why I got so angry at the Zombie. Maybe because I had a bad feeling. I used to watch Zombie movies...
It wasn't a mystery...
I know what happens when you get bit...
