Happy Birthday Daddy :)
"Emma!" Snow whispered as she grabbed her hand and pulled her into her room.
"What?" Emma asked with a confused look at her mom for acting so strange.
"Keep your voice down." Snow whispered as she looked past Emma and then back again.
"Why?" Emma whispered back.
"It's your dad's birthday today." Snow whispered with a grin.
"Oh." Emma said, but wasn't sure what she was suppose to do for him.
"Hey you don't have to do anything, I just wanted to let you know. He isn't expecting anything."
"So why are you telling me?" Emma asked with a frown at how secretive and confusing her mom was being.
"I need you to help me. I'm throwing him a surprise birthday party at Granny's tonight." Snow started as she looked towards the bathroom, when the bathroom door started to open her eyes went wide and she pushed Emma out of the room.
Emma stumbled and almost fell.
David looked at her in concern as he came into the kitchen. "Are you alright?" David asked.
"Your wife is acting crazy." Emma mumbled as she walked over to the kitchen, still having no clue what her mom wanted her to do. She hadn't even had her coffee yet.
"What?" David asked confused.
Before Emma could respond Snow came from the opposite side of the stairs. "Oh Emma, can you babysit Neal tonight?" Snow asked as if she hadn't spoken to her just two seconds ago.
Emma looked at where she was and then where she was. "Sure." Emma mumbled after a moment.
David came over to her and felt her forehead. "Are you sure you are feeling okay?"
"Yeah I'm fine." Emma grumbled.
David looked at her with a worried expression before giving her a side hug with a quick kiss to her temple. "Sure you are."
Emma rolled her eyes, now her Dad thought she was sick and she wasn't sure what her mom wanted her to do. Not to mention she felt like she needed to do something for her Dad, but she had no clue what to do. Should she get him a present? Do something special for him? Spend time with him?
Emma poured herself some coffee, but then her Dad was back over to her.
"Maybe you shouldn't drink that." David said softly as he put his hand on her arm to stop her from drinking it.
"I'm not sick, Dad, I just need coffee." Emma complained in a whiny voice.
"Ok." David said with sigh, but he was still looking at her with concern.
Emma finally got to drink her coffee in peace.
"At least eat some toast with it." David said as he slid her a plate of toast.
Emma frowned. This was all her mom's fault that he thought she was sick when she wasn't. "Oh alright, but I'm not sick."
"Sure, sweetie." David said as he rubbed her back as he passed to go to his wife.
Emma rolled her eyes again before deciding to take her coffee elsewhere to drink. She headed upstairs hoping to get ready in peace.
"Emma?" Snow asked in a soft voice.
"What now?" Emma asked herself after she heard her.
"Emma?"
"Yes, mother?" Emma asked.
"Your Dad wanted me to check on you." Snow started and then put her hand up to feel her forehead.
"I'm not sick!" Emma whined.
"I know, but I had to make sure." Snow explained. "Ok so I need you to babysit Neal at 3:45 and then get to the diner at 5:30 with Neal and Henry."
"Is that it?" Emma asked, thinking she should do something for her Dad.
"Yeah, sweetie. Your Dad will just love it that you are there." Snow said gently.
Emma nodded, but felt like it wasn't enough. "Does he know it's his birthday?"
"Yeah, but he doesn't know you know." Snow explained. "Also thanks to you, he doesn't suspect that I'm doing anything."
"Snow?" David called as he came up the stairs.
"Yes?"
"What do you think? Should we take her temperature?" David asked.
Emma's eyes widened in disbelief.
"Yeah. She does feel a little warm." Snow said and Emma's jaw dropped. She was encouraging him to keep thinking she was sick.
"Mom! I'm not sick!" Emma finally said.
Snow smirked at her from behind her husband before disappearing downstairs.
"Come on, Emma." David said as he handed her the thermometer.
"Oh alright, but I'm fine." Emma took the thermometer and stuck it in her mouth.
They waited until it beeped and Emma pulled it out to see it say 98.6. "See, I'm fine."
"Hm, maybe or you could be coming down with something." David said seriously.
"Can I please get ready for work now?" Emma asked with a sigh.
"Yes." David said with a smirk before leaving the room.
*****OUAT*****
Emma rushed up since she was running late. Her Dad had been bugging her all day making sure she was alright. She never got the chance to get away from him or even think about what she could do for his birthday.
Her only idea was too see if she could stop somewhere before the party to get something for him. She would have to take Neal and Henry with her too, but that would be okay.
"There you are, I was afraid you had forgotten." Snow said as she came into the loft.
"No just running late. Dad is convinced I'm sick."
Snow chuckled. "Sorry, baby." Snow said as she touched her cheek as she passed.
"Don't forget to be at Granny's at 5:30. Don't be late."
"Yeah, yeah. I know. We are going to stop by Gold's to see if we can find some for Dad on our way."
"Emma, you don't need to get him anything. He just wants to spend time with his girl." Snow said softly as she came back over to Emma and kissed her forehead.
"But..."
"Emma trust me. It's okay." Snow said softly.
Emma looked on the table to see a card with scribbles on it. "What's this?" Emma asked.
"Oh I helped Neal make a card for his Daddy." Snow said with a proud smile.
Emma looked at it with a frown. The inside read Happy Birthday Daddy with Neal's name scribbled in with the help of Snow.
"You can make him a card too." Snow suggested.
Emma gave her annoyed glare. It wouldn't be as special as Neal's so what would be the point.
"Emma, don't worry about a gift." Snow said seriously.
Emma couldn't not worry. She had nothing to give him, nothing at all.
"Just get your brother and your son ready to be at the diner at 5:30. Oh and wear something pretty for your Daddy." Snow said with a wink before leaving to meet her Dad.
She frowned. Did her mom want her to wear a dress? She was wearing a dress, but her mom always wore girly clothes. Now on top of trying to find a gift she had to figure out what to wear.
"Henry?" Emma called.
"Yeah, mom?"
"Can you watch Neal while I find something to wear? We have to leave in a hour." Emma said before rushing upstairs to take a shower.
After trying on five different outfits, she finally settled on wearing her good pair of dark denim skinny jeans with her creamed colored sweater with brown boots. It would just have to do. She was running out of time and she still needed to get Neal ready.
She hadn't even done her hair yet so she rushed down to get Neal ready. "Come on, Buddy. If Mommy wanted me pretty, she probably wants you handsome."
After Neal looked absolutely handsome in his jeans and denim button up. Emma realized she dressed him like their Daddy. "Oops, oh well it's kind of perfect. Geez, you don't even try and you're perfect."
"Henry are you ready?" Emma asked as she came out with her little brother.
"Yep!"
"Good can you take Neal again while I finish my hair." Emma asked looking a bit frantic.
"Mom, you have enough time. Grams said we just had to be there by 5:30."
"I know, but I need to get something for your grandpa." Emma said as she put Neal into Henry's arms.
"What?"
"I don't know yet." Emma said with a frown as she walked back to the bathroom to finish her hair.
"Oh dear. We are going to be late." Henry mumbled to Neal.
5:05 pm
"Mom, are you ready yet?"
"Ugh...good as it's going to get I guess." Emma grumbled to herself. Neal might be perfect, but she was far from it. "Yeah, just have to get Neal's stuff then we can go to Gold's shop."
"Ok, we have 25 minutes." Henry said as she came out of the bathroom with her hair in loose curls.
"What? No! We have to hurry!" Emma said as she ran to get Neal's diaper bag to find it only partially ready. She put a couple more diapers, one of his bottles, and a couple toys in it before grabbing her phone and then grabbed the card from Neal to put it in as well.
5:10
"Ok, I'm ready!" Emma said to Henry who had Neal in his arms along with a small wrapped box. "So I'm the only one without a gift?" Emma said in realization.
"Mom, it's okay and aren't you getting one for him anyway?"
"Yeah." Emma said before taking Neal into her arms and leaving the loft with them.
5:15-
"Grams is going to kill you if we get there late." Henry said with a smirk as they walked into Gold's.
"I know that's why you are going to help me find something for my Dad." Emma said with a smile at her son.
"Hey Emma, Henry and little Neal, aren't you suppose to be at a party right now?" Belle asked.
"By 5:30, but I need a gift for my Dad." Emma said quickly.
"Cutting it a little close aren't you?" Will said as he came out from the back.
Emma just shot him a glare before looking back at Belle. "What would you get your Dad?" Emma asked, looking very unsure of what to even look for.
"Well let's see..." Belle started as she pulled a few things out for Emma to consider.
Emma didn't really see anything that really screamed 'happy birthday daddy' to her.
"Mom what about this?" Henry asked as he pulled out a sword.
"He already has a sword." Emma said with a smile, but she still had no clue what to get her Dad.
"5 minutes, mom." Henry said with a smirk.
Emma groaned. She had nothing for her Dad still. Everyone else did, but she had nothing.
"Neal what do you think?" Emma asked in desperation. He pointed at something in the glass case and Emma recognized it, but she wasn't sure if it was the same one. "What's that?"
"Oh, that's to tell if you're having a boy or a girl. I don't think your Dad needs that." Belle chuckled as she got it out of the case.
"I think his mom had one like this. I'll get it, but I still want to get something else..." Emma said with a frown.
"Mom, if that's the same one. He probably would like that since it would remind him of his mom. Plus we really need to go." Henry said.
"Ok." Emma said, but she felt like she was failing as a daughter.
She paid and put the necklace in her pocket since she couldn't wrap it.
They quickly rushed out of the Gold's at 5:35.
"We are definitely late..." Henry said as he ran ahead of her and Neal.
"She probably told us to be their a little earlier anyway." Emma said in hope that it was true. She hated to ruin this too.
Henry stopped all of a sudden and Emma almost ran into him.
"What?" Emma asked.
"They are right there!" Henry said.
"Crap..." Emma said until she saw her mom see them and give Emma a look as she managed to divert her husband's attention to let them sneak away.
"Go, go!" Emma yelled at Henry as they went the back way to Granny's.
"She's going to kill you!" Henry said as they rushed up the inn's steps to go into the diner.
"Please don't remind me!" Emma pleaded as they ran into the diner and Henry chuckled.
"Emma, Henry...come up here." Ruby called to them as they came into the back entrance of the diner.
They hurried over to her.
"Good thing your mom isn't here to see how close you are cutting it."
"Oh she already knows." Henry said with a cheeky grin.
Emma rolled her eyes.
"Oh here they come." Someone said and Emma tensed up. She still had nothing to really give her Dad. She felt so inadequate. Everyone else knew what to give him, but she didn't. She had never done this before.
Maybe if she just hid behind her brother he wouldn't see her...
"Surprise!" Everyone yelled and Emma smiled shyly as her Dad's eyes landed on them. He seemed genuinely surprised and touched by the gesture. He kissed her mom and then came over to them. He hugged Henry and then took Neal out of her arms to kiss his little cheek as Neal giggled in delight at seeing his Daddy. Emma felt out of her element and she didn't even have Neal to hold anymore. She wasn't sure what to do...
David handed Neal to Snow before reaching for Emma's arm to pull her forward. "Thank you, sweetie." He said before pulling her in for a hug.
She wanted to say that she did nothing, but she couldn't admit that.
He let her go and smiled at her, but he looked a little concerned. He probably was wondering if she was sick again.
"Emma, did you bring that thing you were looking at earlier?" Snow asked.
Emma nodded. "It's in here." Emma told her as she saw her Dad greet a couple more of the guests.
Snow got it out and took Neal over to David so that he could give it to his Daddy. Emma watched from a far as Neal gave his card to their Dad and looked like it was the best gift in the world. Then Henry stepped up and gave him his gift. Emma couldn't take it when he seemed to love it as well. She slipped out of the diner and sat on the steps.
She wasn't good at birthdays. She never had birthday parties or went to anyone's else's birthday parties.
She didn't even want to give her present since it sucked in comparison to her brother's and Henry's. She leaned her elbows on her legs and put her head in her hands. She wanted to just leave, but she couldn't do that so she just sat there.
****OUAT****
"Let's sit down and eat." Snow said excitedly as she took Neal from David and found Henry.
They all sat down.
"Where's Emma?" David asked as everyone looked around for Emma as they realized she wasn't with them. "I hope she's feeling okay..."
"David, I don't think that's what it is." Snow said softly.
David looked at her with a confused look.
"Just go find her." Snow said softly.
"Ok." David said as he got up and checked the diner. "Hey Granny, have you seen Emma?"
"Oh she slipped out a little after you got here."
David frowned and went to the door. He opened it to see Emma sitting on the bottom step with her head leaning on her hands. She didn't get very far, but he was really beginning to worry that she was getting sick. He quietly walked down and sat by her. "Emma? Are you feeling okay?" David asked softly as he put his arm around Emma.
"Dad, I'm not sick." Emma said with a sigh.
"Hm..." David said unconvinced. "What are you doing out here?"
Emma shrugged her shoulders, but then had to wipe a tear away quickly before her Dad saw it.
Unfortunately for her, he did see it.
"Hey, what's wrong?" David asked as he turned her face towards him.
"I suck at birthdays." Emma said.
"What? Why do you think that?" David asked as he rubbed her back.
"Because I do. I have nothing to give you that's really special. Neal's present was better than mine and he's just a baby. I tried to find you something, but I couldn't even find anything because I didn't know what to get you. The thing I got you, you probably won't even want. Then we were late getting here and almost didn't make it in time for you to get here. Now you are out here and not in there having fun. I'm ruining everything." Emma explained with tears trickling down her face as she looked down at her shoes.
David smiled softly. "Emma, you didn't ruin anything and you didn't need to get me anything."
"That's what Mom said, but what daughter doesn't give her Dad a gift on his birthday? Even Neal gave you something and he's a baby."
"Emma, you being here is enough. I don't care as much about the presents as much as I care about you, Neal, Henry, and your mom. You already gave me a present by just being here that's all I need. " David said softly.
"Are you sure?" Emma asked.
"Of course and Emma anything you would give me, I would love because it's from you." David said with a smile as he wiped away a couple tears with his thumb.
Emma looked at him hesitantly as she bit her lip and then she dug out the necklace that she had put in her pocket. "I'm sorry I didn't wrap it and I don't even think it's that same one..." Emma mumbled as she held it hidden in her hand, but hadn't gave it to him. She was too worried that he wouldn't like it.
"Emma, what did I just tell you?" David said with a chuckle at how worried she was over a present.
"That you would love it no matter what it is?"
"Exactly, now give it to me." David said with a proud smile.
Emma bit her lip again as she put it in his hand and looked away.
David couldn't believe what he was looking at. He thought it had been left behind in the Enchanted Forest. "Emma..." David said in awe.
"I know, you don't like it. I'll return it. I'm sorry, I suck at this." Emma rambled as she started to stand up to leave, but David caught her hand.
"You will do no such thing, because I love it." David said as he pulled her back down and made her face him.
"You don't need to say that just because I gave it to you." Emma said.
"Emma Ruth. Listen to me. I love it because it is the same one, it was my mother's, and you gave it to me. But where did you find it?" David asked as he looked back down at it.
"Gold's. It's really your mother's? I thought it might just be one like it."
"Yeah it's hers. Look here. See on the back this little sheep?" David showed Emma the back of the necklace.
"My mom, your Grandma said that her Dad carved that into it for her Mom." David explained.
"So you like it?" Emma asked after a moment.
"No." Emma's heart stopped as he looked her in the eyes. "I love it."
Emma smiled shyly.
"Thank you, Emma. It was a very thoughtful gift." David said before wrapping his arms around her to give her a hug.
"Happy Birthday Daddy." Emma whispered shyly.
David smiled softly as a tear came down his cheek. "Now that is all I needed to hear from you, baby." David whispered back before kissing her temple.
"Now, I believe your mother was talking about starting to eat so let's head back in to join the party." David said with a grin as he let go of Emma, but took her hand instead.
"Good, I'm starving!" Emma said as she let her Dad help her up.
"That's a good sign, but I am worried about you being outside this long. Did you not bring a coat with you?" David asked in concern.
"For the last time, I'm not sick!" Emma said as she laughed in frustration.
"I'm not convinced." David said seriously as he walked her inside while rubbing the side of her arm.
"Ugh Dad..." Emma whined. "How long is this going to last?"
"Until you're better." David said with a chuckle.
"But I'm not sick." Emma said with a sigh.
"We disagree on that point." David said softly as he kissed her head.
Emma rolled her eyes, she was getting no where with him. He was still convinced she was sick when she wasn't.
"We were beginning to wonder if we needed to send a search party out for you two." Snow teased with a smile.
"Yeah, but we decided to just eat without you guys..." Henry said with a grin.
"What?" Emma asked.
"Yeah and it was delicious!" Henry continued.
"Did you really eat without us?" Emma asked with a frown as she slid into the booth and then David slid in beside her.
"No, Emma we didn't eat without you. " Snow said softly with a smile.
"Geez, Mom, I don't think your lie detector is on." Henry said with a chuckle and then everyone joined him.
8:30 pm
"Mom, can I go home with Regina?" Henry asked as he came over to the booth that Emma was still sitting in with her brother. Neal was asleep on her chest, which was making her tired, but she loved holding him.
"Yeah that's fine, kid." Emma answered with a grin.
"Thanks, Mom!" Henry yelled and Emma winced.
The party had given her a pretty bad headache and she almost wanted to take Neal home with her to get some peace and quiet.
She glanced over at her mom and dad to see them talking with Ella and Thomas. Her Dad seemed to be have a good time with all of his friends which made her happy.
Snow came over after seeing Emma looking over at them. "Maybe we should head home." Snow said as she stroked Neal's cheek.
"You guys don't have to leave. I can take him home and stay with him. I'm a little tired anyway so it won't matter." Emma suggested.
"Oh you don't have to do that sweetheart." Snow said softly.
"Oh I don't mind. Let it be a present to Dad. Let me do this for him." Emma pleaded.
"Okay, but be careful on your walk back."
"I will." Emma promised.
Snow smiled before getting Neal's things together in his diaper bag then putting an extra blanket over Neal.
Emma stood up with Neal and took the bag from her mom to put on her arm.
David noticed Emma getting ready to leave and walked over. "Hey are we leaving?" David asked as he put an arm around his daughter, who looked a little worn out.
"No, but Emma's going to take Neal home for us so we can stay a little longer." Snow explained.
David looked at Emma with a worried expression. "Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I am a little tired anyway so it's fine." Emma said.
"Ok, but be careful and...take this." David said as he grabbed his coat since she hadn't brought her own.
It wasn't a suggestion, but an order so she just complied and let her parents help her put it on while she held her sleeping brother. Plus she was a little surprised her Dad was letting her go without him so she didn't want to push her luck.
David kissed Neal's head before kissing Emma's cheek. "Be safe, okay?"
"I will." Emma promised.
"Good." David said softly.
Emma started to walk towards the door.
"Emma." David called and Emma turned around. "Call us when you make it home."
Emma smiled and nodded before leaving the diner.
Emma was exhausted as she walked home that she accidentally closed her eyes without even thinking about it, but then she would jerk them open when she realized what she had done. "Wow, buddy. I'm more tired than I thought." Emma said as she looked down at her baby brother who was sleeping contently.
Emma tried to walk a little faster, but her legs ached and she could only seem to walk at a slow pace. It seemed like forever by the time she reached their street. She shivered and was glad that her Dad had her take his coat. She was cold with it on; she couldn't imagine what it would be like without it.
"Yes, baby bro, we finally made it." Emma said in relief as she walked up to the building. She groaned when she saw the stairs, but then started up them thinking of her bed the whole time.
She finally made it to the door and realized it was locked. "Oh no, don't tell me I forgot the keys..." Emma whispered as she bit her lip.
"Wait..." Emma said as she realized she was wearing her Dad's coat. She took one hand off of Neal to check her Dad's pocket. "Yes!" Emma exclaimed as she took out his keys and opened the door.
She walked in and shut the door before setting her Dad's keys on the table. She set down the diaper bag on the bed before carefully laying Neal in his crib. She then plopped down on her parents' bed and closed her eyes.
After a minute, she groaned remembering that she hadn't called her parents. Why did she have to call? Couldn't she just text them?
She grabbed the diaper bag and found her phone before finding her Dad's name and sent him a quick text saying she was home. A second after she sent it, she heard a ding in her pocket, or her Dad's pocket. Emma chuckled before sending her Mom a text saying she was home.
She knew she should head to her own bed, but she didn't want to climb another set of stairs plus she couldn't go to bed yet. She would just stay on her parents' bed for a few more minutes before heading to the couch.
A minute later, Emma's phone vibrates with a text message from her mom.
Good, we were starting to get worried. - Snow
Oh, can you change Neal before you put him to bed? - Snow
Yeah, no problem. - Emma
Thank you, honey ;) - Snow
Emma groaned, but got up and picked her baby brother up and took him to the changing table. "Sorry, bro, but Momma says that I have to change you."
Emma quickly changed him and swaddled him back up before taking him back to the room, but this time instead of putting him in his crib she just lays him on the bed next to her. She puts a couple pillows around him and then puts a protective arm around him before closing her eyes.
********OUAT********
David and Snow walk into a quiet apartment wondering if Emma actually went to sleep already.
Snow walked quietly to crib to see it empty and almost yelled at Charming before seeing him motioning her to come over to him.
"And she keeps telling me she's not sick." David whispered with a smile at the sight before him.
Snow gasped, but then chuckled.
Emma was passed out on their bed with her brother snuggled by her sleeping contently in her arms. Emma still had her father's coat on and the diaper bag still on the bed with Emma's phone laying next to it.
"I think the walk wore her out." Snow said softly as she walked up to the sleeping pair.
She carefully slipped Neal from his sister's arms, but then Emma started to wake.
David walked over to Emma as Snow went to go put Neal in his crib.
Emma gasped as she woke up and saw Neal gone. " Neal?" Emma cried as she realized he wasn't where she had him.
"Shhh, Emma. Your mom is putting him in his crib." David said softly as he sat down on the edge of the bed.
"Oh." Emma said as she closed her eyes again.
David smiled softly. "Come on, Emma. Let's get this coat off you and get you to bed."
"I'm not tired." Emma mumbled with her eyes closed.
David chuckled. "I beg to differ, kiddo." David said as he helped her sit up on the bed.
David started to help her out of the coat, but stopped when she started talking.
"But I'm cold, Dad."
"I'll get you a blanket." David said as he finished taking his coat off of her. "Actually, we need to just get you up to bed."
"It's too early." Emma mumbled as she sat up more in the bed to try to convince him that she was awake.
"Emma it's not too early, it's ten." Snow said as she came up to the bed again.
"Early, still. I'll watch tv." Emma said as she started to get up.
"Oh no, young lady. You are heading up to bed." David said softly, but sternly.
"But Dad..." Emma said as she tried to get past her parents to go to the couch.
"No, Emma." David said as he wrapped one arm around her and led her to the stairs instead. "Snow can you get the thermometer?"
"Dad, I'm not sick." Emma grumbled as she had no option, but to let her Dad take her upstairs.
"I'm afraid you are, baby girl." David whispered as he got her to her room.
Emma shook her head in disbelief, but then closed her eyes when the pounding in her head got worse with the motion.
David sat her down to notice her wincing with her eyes closed. "Do you have a headache?" David asked softly before leaning down to take her boots off.
"Yeah, but it's not too bad."
David narrowed his eyes, but didn't say anything as he finished taking her boots off. "Ok, kiddo, go get your pajamas on."
Emma rolled her eyes, but winced at that motion too. She got up and found some comfortable clothes to wear before heading to the bathroom to change.
After changing, Emma came out of the bathroom to find both of her parents waiting for her. She didn't know why they thought she was sick. She was only a little tired and had a little or maybe big headache, but that's it.
"Come get in bed, Emma." Snow said with a sympathetic smile as she pulled back the covers for Emma to crawl into bed.
Emma did, thinking bed sounded really good even if it was too early. As soon as she was in, she closed her eyes and felt them cover her with the blanket.
"Emma, hold on a second, let's get your temperature before you sleep." David said as he held out the thermometer for her to take.
Emma groaned, but took it and put it in her mouth under her tongue. She then closed her eyes.
A minute later, the thermometer beeped scaring Emma since she had been almost asleep again.
David took it and both Snow and him looked at it. "100.5. You have a fever."
"No." Emma said in shock, she couldn't believe her Dad had been right.
"Yes, I told you that you were sick." David said as he felt her forehead.
"But I'm not..." Emma almost whined.
"Sorry, sweetie, but you are." Snow said softly. "Here take these, they will help with your headache."
David helped Emma sit up a little as Snow handed her the pills and the sprite to take her pills. Then David laid her back down before covering her back up. "Ok, kiddo, get some sleep. If you need us, just yell." David said before kissing Emma's forehead.
"Kay, Daddy." Emma mumbled sleepily before falling asleep.
David smiled softly at her sleepy voice calling him Daddy before kissing her forehead. "Goodnight, princess."
The End. :)
