Chapter 11

"So tell me Chericri. Why did Jorun shoot the driver?"

My bedside manner is sometimes called into question, but I still feel that I have a great deal of patience. For instance, I waited twelve hours for an explanation that never seemed to come. Jorun was asleep in his quarters and I took it upon myself to corner Chericri while she was alone in the cockpit.

"Jorun shot the driver because Jorun shot the driver."

"That is not an-"

"Yeah, I know that at first that doesn't sound like much of an answer but that is the truth. Jorun, just does stuff sometimes that doesn't make any sense at the moment it happens, but that one action will have repercussions that will affect events at a later time. I was skeptical when I first heard about it too, until I saw the series of moments play itself out in front of me."

"What do you mean by a series of moments?"

"The first time I came across Jorun was about three years ago. Back then, he was doing runs with Nix Klorin. I've known Nix for the better part of twenty years now. Well Nix would never shut up about the guy. His stories would involve Jorun running through blasterfire without getting hit and Jorun killing a bounty hunter from across the cantina with a card from a Pazaak deck, or navigating an asteroid field at full speed and while radar is down. That is not even talking about the wrong place at the right time stories, all of Nix's stories seemed to end up with Jorun pulling a rabbit out of his ass at the perfect moment and averting a potential catastrophe."

"Nix must have been just exaggerating, or Jorun is just lucky."

"Yeah, that is what I thought until I ended up in a Jorun story. I was in Thousand Stinking Ditches in Bagsho and was hanging out with Jorun and Nix in between jobs. We are all drunk and in real great spirits. Jorun out of nowhere buys a little eight year old human girl a shiny necklace at the bazaar. I was pretty drunk and didn't think much of it. An hour later we are coming out of the cantina and heading to another cantina that Nix said had a better band. Jorun leads the way because he swears he knows a short cut and we are cutting through the alleys. He seemed to lead us right into the middle of a Thousand Stinking Ditches gang war. Nix and I are falling back and Jorun gets this weird look on his face and runs right into the fighting. He doesn't even pull his blaster out. I figure this is the last that we will ever see of the great Jorun Daes but then he is back and carrying a bloody Bothan over his shoulder. We take the Bothan to the hospital because maybe he reminded Jorun of a dog he had as a kid or something. Well the stray Bothan that Jorun found in the gang war turns out to be Toran whom is now our contact with the Exchange. The little girl story gets weirder though. Maybe nine months later, we are back in Bagsho and run into that same little girl. She remembered Jorun because of his blue hair. The necklace that Jorun randomly bought for her was a piece of stolen jewelry from Alderaan. The little girl's father was a local policeman named Garet Jax who figured out it was stolen after finding an inscription inside. This lead him back to the vendor in the bazaar and from there he busted every person it had changed hands to all the way back to Nerla the Hutt on Alderaan. By giving Rina Jax the necklace Jorun inadvertently brought down Nerla the Hutt. By saving Toran from certain death Jorun has gotten us a lot of work. Jorun's actions may seem random to you but it is just a series of moments that always leads to something so much bigger than what we seem to perceive. I have no idea how these things happen, Oasis. I just know that they happen."

"I don't know Chericri, it still sounds like bullshit."

"Well we are alive and we still got paid, so don't worry about it."
