Chapter 11: To You
The silk fabric clung to Caroline's skin in a way that made her feel slightly uncomfortable. She let her hands run down the side of the dress, smoothing the fabric as she looked into the mirror in the dressing room. Rebekah had dragged her out dress shopping as today, the Originals were hosting a ball and had invited pretty much all of the supernatural beings that resided in New Orleans, along with the few humans in the know. Klaus had only told her about the dance a few days before Rebekah came into town, and Caroline had planned on wearing her old prom dress. However, the blonde original deemed the prom dress unsuitable. Apparently, Caroline had agreed to wear a new dress the night she drank way too much whiskey, but she had no recollection of it. In all honesty, she didn't remember most of that night. However, she remembered every detail of the next morning in great detail. Once her hangover had subsided her and Nik, had a long and heartfelt conversation. They each explained their side of the disagreement about when she should turn. It became very evident to Caroline that Nik had no qualms about spending forever with her, he was just worried about what the change would do to her. Without any reluctance, Caroline agreed she would wait a few years unless something happened to her to justify changing her earlier.
"Caroline do you like it, or should I send another dress in?" Rebekah asked from outside the dressing room. Caroline looked in the mirror at the daring red dress Rebekah had chosen. It was held up by to thin straps that led to a very low back, and the front was composed of a high silt that put her legs on display. It was daring, and sexy, too much so, and Nik wouldn't last through the whole night with her in it.
"Send another one in," Caroline said as she unzipped the side zipper of the dress and stepped out of it. Carefully she hung it back on the velvet hanger that it had been brought in on and laid it on the pile of dress mounting the chair in the dressing room. For the past hour, she had been trying dress after dress in the upscale dress store. Yet, she had yet to find one that felt just right.
"Here," Rebekah said as she cracked open the door and slipped into another dress on a hanger. Caroline took it without any hesitation, shutting the door after Rebekah removed her hand.
The dress on the hanger was promising. It was a deep, rich navy blue color with small off the shoulder sleeves that were embellished with small crystals. With a small smile on her face, Caroline slipped the dress off the hanger and placed the hanger on the hanging rod. Ever so cautiously she undid the zipper and slipped on the dress. As she looked in the mirror, she couldn't help but smile. The dress was perfect. It had a low sweetheart neckline that showed off her cleavage in a modest way, the off the shoulder sleeves were understate despite the crystal adhering to them. The dress was fitted against her body until it reached her knees were it seemed to flow away from her. However, the back of the dress was simply amazing, as it was backless. The skin underneath the straps was exposed until reached her lower back.
"Rebekah, I think you can stop looking, now," Caroline said.
She heard a loud relieved sigh from the other side of the door. "Well, come out and let me see it," Rebekah stated. Nervously, Caroline opened the door of the dressing room and stepped out into the reception area. Rebekah sat in front of her on a small pink settee, and her face didn't' seem very impressed. "Turn," Rebekah instructed, and Caroline did a quick turn around. "I think it will do, it's better than what you were going to wear."
Caroline put her hands on her hips. "Seriously, we spent all this time and you can't seem a little more excited?" She asked.
Rebekah rolled her eyes. "The past four dresses would have been fine," the blonde original started. "You're trying too hard to impress my brother and I can't but help find it slightly revolting."
"You are the one that suggested we go shopping together," Caroline replied.
"I think I like you better intoxicated," Rebekah stated as she leaned back on the settee. "You and I seem to agree better with regards to my brother's character when you are angry at him," she added.
It was obvious to Caroline after the week Rebekah had been in town that she was obviously heartbroken. She wondered if had something to do with Stefan not being here. Hesitantly, Caroline walked over and sat down next to Rebekah. "Have you talked to Stefan recently?" Caroline questioned.
Rebekah gasped and looked at Caroline. "How did you know about me and Stefan?" It was clear to clear to her that was Rebekah was shocked.
"Stefan told me," Caroline answered honestly. "Awhile ago actually, it sounded like everything was going good, but I assuming it's not?"
"Not everyone's relationship is a walk through the park," Rebekah snapped and looked away. "He's still in love with Elena, and I refuse to be someone's rebound. I ended things."
Caroline's heart dropped. Stefan had seemed so happy when he was talking about Rebekah that one day. Although, she knew Elena was probably still in the back of Stefan's mind, but not his heart. When Elena had turned, the girl that Stefan once loved had died. She would always be in his mind as Caroline knew he felt like he failed at protecting Elena. However, Stefan was trying to move on with his life, and Caroline thought he was going to do that with Rebekah. "Oh, Rebekah, I am-
"I don't need your pity," Rebekah snapped interrupting what Caroline was saying. Caroline wasn't shocked by Rebekah's reaction, she was always on the defensive. It was like one step forward and three steps backward with the blonde Original.
"I am just trying to be your friend," Caroline stated as she stood up. "I know you haven't had many in the years, but I am trying," she paused and looked at Rebekah. "Maybe you should try too," Caroline added before walking back into the dressing room and closing the door behind her.
Caroline leaned against the dressing room and let out a deep breath. Rebekah was Klaus's sister, and she knew that they needed to get along. If she and Klaus were going to be in this relationship for the long run, Caroline would rather be on good terms with her. However, she was wondering after years relying on her brothers for company had hardened her to friendship with other girls. By nature, Rebekah was a very jealous person, and being the only girl in her family only intensified that. Along with that, Nik was Rebekah's favorite brother, and she most likely saw Caroline as someone who was trying to take her brother from her. Caroline knew she needed to do something to show Rebekah she was on her side. With a smile on her face, Caroline grabbed her phone and texted someone who she thought would be able to help.
The stones seemed to radiate as the caught the light as Niklaus titled the velvet box holding the magnificent earrings it held. Caroline's birthday was fast approaching, and Klaus had commissioned a local jeweler in the Caroline to make her something special. The earrings the jeweler had made were intricately handcrafted. The dropped style earrings were set in white gold. A small line of diamonds held together a decent size square cut by one of its corners. Around the square smaller diamonds made a circle and filled the space in between the diamonds forming a circle and the center square diamond. They were not too large not to be worn for every day but still would look perfect for the ball this weekend. Back during the summer, Elijah had suggested that they hold a ball for the factions of New Orleans, has a way to show their family power and to remind everyone they lived in harmony because of the Originals. Of course, his sister had taken to the idea and had been planning the event for months, which was why she returned. The ball was today, and Klaus had been planning on saving the earrings for Caroline's birthday the next week but he decided he could spoil her today. He was still feeling guilty about the disagreement a few days ago. Although they had made up, he didn't like the thought of having a spat with her. Even the morning after when she had woken up not only hung over but enlighten about why he was so upset about the idea, it still didn't sit with him well. Caroline was his to spoil and cherish, and losing his temper and making her upset wasn't the thing he was supposed to do around her. No, Caroline was meant to be spoiled, and today would be the day he would do so.
"Are they to your liking?" The elder gentlemen who Klaus had commission asked.
Klaus nodded at the graying man behind the counter. The earrings were just as he had wanted them. Elijah had not lied when he said was an impeccable jeweler. "Is the necklace ready as well?" Klaus questioned.
"Oh yes, give me a moment," the man replied and disappeared to the back of the store for a few moments, only to return with a larger box. He placed the box in front of Klaus and opened it to reveal a necklace. The necklace composed of a small silver chain which held a large dark blue sapphire, like the necklace the sapphire was cut in a square shape and held onto the chain at the point. Diamonds formed a circle around the center sapphire, highlighting the rich blue color of the stone.
"I do say you out did yourself," Klaus said with a smile, pleased with the older man's work. He could already picture the pieces of jewelry on Caroline, and he couldn't wait to see the look on her face when he gave them to her.
"It's a pleasure," he paused before he smiled. "Your sister also called early, mentioning that the lady in which these were made for will be wearing blue tonight, sir."
Klaus shook his head. Rebekah had dragged Caroline out to a last minute dress shopping, as Caroline had planned to wear her old prom dress. Of course, his sister was applauded by that thought and was making arrangements for the problem to be rectified. "You do say?" Klaus said looking at the two velvet boxes. "On that note, would you mind wrapping the earrings up I'll make those her birthday gift then."
"Would you like me to wrap the necklace as well?" The little old man asked.
"No, I'll take care of the necklace myself," Klaus answered before nodded and took the case containing the earrings to the back to be wrapped.
Tonight would be a long night. Luckily, he would have Caroline at his side. The last Mikaelson Family Ball had almost ended with disaster. Although Esther would not be there to try to plot against him, Klaus had this nagging feeling in his gut. Things had been quiet for too long on the werewolf front and Tyler Lockwood did not have those rings made without a reason, it had something to do with the Crescent Wolf Clan. However, from what he heard from his scouts, there had been no unusual activity in the Bayou. It made him feel as if tonight, they were being foolish by hosting an event. He felt as if they were just letting an attack happen. Rebekah and Elijah had waived his worries off, which only seemed to irritate him. Despite his own hesitations, he knew Caroline was excited for tonight. So, he would put on a strong face and try to let himself relax.
Caroline let out a disgruntled sigh as she paced back to the dresser after looking at herself in the mirror. Her hair was perfectly curled and swept up into a simple updo, and her makeup was dark and smokey to reflect the color of the dress. She looked stunning, despite that fact Caroline felt like something was missing or perhaps it was her nerves. It was a quarter past eight and she could already hear the guests arriving downstairs. The courtyard had been decorated in a beautiful grand ballroom for the evening, with a string ensemble to entertain the guests for the night. The party was due to start in fifteen minutes with the Originals toasting the alliance they were able to create between the witches and the vampires to create peace in the Quarter. Caroline was expected to be standing next to Klaus the whole night, as a statement that she was under the protection of the Original family. Once back at the dresser, she yanked out the large hoop earrings that she thought would look good with her hairdo, but hadn't. Her eyes scan her jewelry box for some piece of jewelry to wear with her dress, but she just couldn't find anything that she liked.
"Love," Klaus said as he walked into the room in a classic black tux. He had slipped in it an hour ago before wondering off to discuss things with Elijah, and now he probably back to retrieve her to go downstairs.
Caroline forced a smile, hoping he wouldn't see how frustrated she was with herself. She prided herself on having everything perfect, but right now she felt so off. "Is it time to go downstairs?" She asked.
"Not quite yet," Klaus began as he walked over to her. "As stunning as you look in that dress, I have something I think will only enhance your beauty," he finished before he slipped his hand into his coat pocket and pulled out a stunning diamond and sapphire necklace.
"Nik," Caroline gasped at the necklace. It was absolutely stunning, and it was absolutely perfect for her dress. "You shouldn't have," she said humbly.
"I should, now turn around so I can see it on you," He instructed. With a small smile on her face, Caroline turned around. Klaus's hand gently grazed her skin as he placed the necklace around her necklace and clasping it together to hold it there. Once he was done she turned back around to face him.
"Thank you, it's perfect," she said, looking at him.
Nik grinned and kissed her on the forehead. "I am glad you like it, love. You only deserve the best." Caroline wasn't so sure what she did for him to treat her so great. She wasn't exactly the ideal girlfriend, and in a thousand years, he certainly had come across women more interesting and beautiful than her. Yet, he had fallen her and she couldn't help but be swept off her feet by him. She leaned in a placed a kiss on his lips and responded eagerly, his hands pulling her close to him.
"We should probably head down," Caroline pulled back blushing, knowing if they didn't leave the confines of the bedroom soon they wouldn't ever go downstairs.
"I suppose you're right, love," he paused before capturing her lips again. "Duty unfortunately calls," he added as he pulled away.
Caroline grinned as he offered her his arm and she took it, and he led her out of the room and onto the balcony. Elijah and Rebekah stood by the railing each with a glass of champagne in their hand. Both Originals were dressed for the occasion, Elijah in a classic tux and Rebekah in a daring purple dress with a plunging neckline and high middle slit. The two siblings nodded at their brother as he led them to stand in the middle of the two. The courtyard was already filled with people conversing around with champagne in their hands. It was odd to think, she couldn't tell if a person was a vampire or witch, but these people at one time had been out for each other's blood. The loud ringing of a champagne glass being tapped, caused everyone below to stop talking and draw their attention to the balcony. Suddenly, all eyes were on her as Klaus handed her a glass of champagne.
"Good evening everyone," Elijah began his voice resonating throughout the space. "It is my family's greatest pleasure to have each and everyone here tonight," he paused then looked Nik.
Caroline looked at Nik as he opened his mouth to speak. "New Orleans has always been a special place to my family. Early this summer, New Orleans was not living to its full potential. Now, I dare say that New Orleans is better than ever," he finished and glancing at his brother again.
"A toast," Elijah said raising his glass in the air. "For the continuance of the harmony that runs through the city sense or return, and the hope that it continues so for many years."Caroline followed suit of the crowd and raised her glass before tipping it back and taking it a sip. She smiled as she saw someone in the back of the ground. It was Stefan, she had texted him conceiving him to try and come fix things with Rebekah. It was a long shot, but Caroline was happy that he showed.
"You didn't," Rebekah sneered as she turned to face Caroline. She had obviously seen Stefan in the crowd.
"Rebekah," Klaus scolded pulling Caroline a little closer to him. It was protective over her, even when it came to his own family.
"I did it for you, Rebekah," Caroline started looking at the only female Original. "You liked him, and he likes you. So, go talk to him. I mean the guy flew all the way from New York to see you!" She exclaimed.
Rebekah glared at Caroline, only to earn a pointed look from both her brothers. "I'll go be a polite hostess and that's it," she replied before storming downstairs and into the courtyard.
Elijah glanced at his brother and Caroline. "I'll go greet some guests and keep an eye out for her. The last thing guests need to see is one of Rebekah's meltdowns," he said before following his sister down the stairs.
"You invited Stefan?" Klaus questioned as he took a sip of his champagne. He leaned against the railing on the balcony. It was obvious that Klaus was amused by the situation, after all, he loved to make his sister upset.
Caroline crossed her arms, one hand still holding the champagne flute. "She's obviously missing him, I thought it was a good idea." The whole reason she invited Stefan was because she thought it would make Rebekah a little more bearable. However, Caroline could see where she was wrong. Rebekah was going to act miserable around Caroline no matter what. "I was just trying to make an effort, you know and try to be friends with her."
Klaus smiled as stepped forward and placed his hand on her waist. "Love, I appreciate your effort, but Rebekah isn't one to befriend people so easily," he stated as he placed a chaste kiss on her cheek.
"So, am I supposed to just grin and bear her horribleness? I mean she sleeps down the hall from me," Caroline paused. "I just want your family to like me," she admitted quietly.
"Love," Klaus began before taking the champagne glass at her hand and placing bother his and hers on the side table on the wall next to them. He placed both hands on her waist and looked her in the eyes. "They do like you. It just after a thousand years, my family tends to guard their emotions around humans."
"I don't understand," Caroline murmured.
Klaus brought her a little closer to him, where they were flesh against each other, the string ensemble playing softly in the background. "After a few lifetimes of getting close to humans only to watch the people you call friend die, it begins to harden you. Elijah's prim and proper facade is one he puts on the distance himself between mortals. While Rebekah is more like me, she pushes those away who she believes she's growing fond of," Klaus explained.
His explanation made sense her mind, however, it let her only made her think why he had pursued her then. "Why?" Caroline questioned. "Why did you let yourself get close to me then?"
"I think a part of me knew," he began as he leaned in closer to her. "That I was going to fall incredibly, deeply in love with you," Nik finished before capturing her lips with his. The kiss ended quicker than Caroline was expecting, she had thought Klaus would kiss her senseless. Or until the point that he would convince her they should go back to his room. "I suppose, I couldn't trouble you for a dance?" Klaus asked as he pulled away from and presented her his hand.
"I would love to," Caroline said taking his hand, with a smile.
Klaus led them the down the stairs and joined the rest of the party goers. Acting more polite than he usually did, Klaus nodded at those who acknowledge him as he led her to the center of the courtyard where people were dancing. Ever the expert, Nik began to twirl her around the place as if he had trained in ballroom dancing. Caroline knew better, though, he had been around for years and some dances such as the waltz had never changed. Luckily, she was a good dancer so she could hold her on in the dancing area. It was nice, though, that he didn't ever mutter a complaint when it came to dancing with her. He truly enjoyed it. Other boys, she had dated, only wished to dance one song and only so they could feel her up. Truly, she loved the fact he liked just spending time with her.
"They seem to be getting along," Klaus motioned his head to far corner or the courtyard where Rebekah and Stefan stood conversing.
It was easy for not only Caroline to see Rebekah cared for Stefan, but anyone who was looking on to the couple. Stefan seemed more aloof about the situation, but as one of his best friends, Caroline could tell he was happy to see Rebekah. "Well, I just want the both of them to be happy."
Klaus smirked, "I am not sure if my sister can make any man truly happy, insane maybe, but happy is questionable."
"Be nice," Caroline scolded, she knew he was being a typical brother, but if Rebekah heard him she would meltdown. "I didn't take my time to talking Stefan to come down only for you to piss Rebekah off."
"She's far enough away she won't hear me," he paused as look at Caroline. "Besides, my sister is probably too busy trying to charm her way into Stefan's good graces," he added, before dipping Caroline effortlessly.
Caroline smiled as he brought her back to standing, and they continued to waltz. "Yes, but every time you and I are at the same dance event, things go bad."
"We're not in Mystic Falls," Klaus stated. "And there is no danger lurking around as far as I heard of," he added hesitantly.
Caroline looked at him, sensing the worry in his voice. She knew something was bothering him. "What are you telling me, Nik?" Caroline asked.
"Nothing, love," he replied only making Caroline glared at him. "Fine," he sighed. "Things have been too quiet on the werewolf front. It doesn't make any sense that they put so much effort into getting those rings, and then not do anything."
She looked away from Nik. Werewolves weren't her favorite subject. They were the very thing she feared the most "That's not comforting," Caroline replied.
"Love," Klaus said, standing in his place and not moving. "I promise you, I will never let anything harm you for as long as you live," he vowed, as he caressed the side of her face. "Now, no more depressing talk," Klaus instructed as he began to lead her in the waltz again. "Tonight, you are the belle of the ball and I am your gentlemen."
"Oh really," Caroline began with a smile on her face, glad they were changing the subject. Tonight was after all was supposed to be a fun evening. "I wouldn't call you gentlemen," she confessed.
Klaus raised his eyebrow. "Oh, Caroline you hurt me by saying such a thing. If I am not a gentleman what am I then?"
"I would say you are gentlemen in disguise," Caroline answered. "Perfect manners on the outside, but really you're not one for rules or decorum." Nik would just have easily come downstairs tonight in jeans and a henley if Elijah hadn't reminded him to wear a suit. Also, he had nasty manners half the time, and before the night was over she was sure to see him with his feet up on a table. Even more so, Caroline had always been taught that gentlemen would never let his female relations live with him before marriage. No matter how old school the thought, Caroline knew she was right to say Nik was not a true gentleman.
"I am the perfect gentlemen when it comes to you," he countered. "Have I not been a proper escort?"
"Says the man that lets me live with him out of wedlock," Caroline replied as he twirled her around, before bringing her flesh against his chest.
"I don't believe you've ever complained about living here," he paused before leaning his lips against her ears. "But if the living together out of wedlock does bother you, but as a gentleman I would be happy to rectify that situation," he whispered into her ear.
Caroline could feel the blush forming on her cheeks at his words. It was hard to believe that he actually mention marriage. As a girl, Caroline had pictured getting married her whole life. Until she started dating Nik, he just didn't seem like the type of person that would get married. "Did you just say," she trailed off, not even knowing how to respond what he had just said.
"What's wrong love?" He questioned looking at her as if he didn't understand why she was surprised.
"You just mentioned marriage," Caroline blurted out, trying to hide how nervous this conversation was making her. They weren't bad nerves because the idea of marriage didn't scare her. Klaus mentioning marriage made her nervous, it caught her off guard.
"Yes," He replied bluntly as he slowed their movement down to match the pace of the slowing music. "Isn't marriage what normal couples talk about, love?"
"We aren't a normal couple, Nik," she paused. This was one the conversation if she didn't play right with him, they would never revisit the subject. "I mean it's not like we can walk into a courthouse and fill out a marriage license. I think the registrar would have a heart attack when put down your birth year," she rambled off. Honestly, how would she get married to him? At the end of the day, it would just be a ceremony, with no legal backing, or she assumed.
Klaus shook his head, "I am not quite worried about the specifics details love, I thought-
"You've thought?" Caroline gasped out. "Like you have been thinking about this a lot?" It was still hard for her to wrap her head around her mind that Klaus was talking about marriage. Marriage! Her nineteenth birthday was only a week away, yet her boyfriend was seriously thinking about marriage, and she was slowly starting to see why. If she was going to turn in a few years, she knew he would need some type of reassurance that she was hundred percent ready for forever with him.
"What type a man would I be if I hadn't thought of marrying the girl I am in love with?" The words slipped out his mouth so casually it stunned Caroline. Every time he said he loved her, every time he claimed to want to spend the rest of eternity with her, the world slowed down in those moments. However, in this very instance, the world seemed to stop. Nik just didn't want to spend eternity with her, he wanted to spend eternity with her as her husband.
"You want to marry me?" Caroline asked quietly, as they came to a stop. She looked into his eyes and she could see the utter adoration he held for her in them.
"Of course, I do love," he said honestly.
Not caring that the whole supernatural community was there to witness them, Caroline placed a kiss on his lips. Klaus pulled her closer, returning it with nothing but love and passion. The music sped up again into a lively, happy tune as they parted, and with a grin on his face, Klaus lifted her up and twirled her around. Tonight was truly becoming one of the happiest moments of her lives. It would be a night she remembered for the rest of her life, for as long that may ever be. "Nik!" she shrieked as he put her down on the ground. "Everyone is staring," she whispered into his ear.
"Let them," he replied as he leaned in a placed another kiss on her lips. The horrifying sounds of people yelling, and the unmistakable sounds of wolves growling, made him pull away from her quickly. His eyes darted widely around the courtyard as utter chaos was ensuing. Wolves had infiltrated the Abbatoire, circling around the edge of the courtyard, keeping the guests in.
Caroline looked at Nik, his jaw straight, and his protectively placed around her waist. "It's a full moon," Caroline stated as she looked up to the sky, the full moon hung ominously above them. The werewolves of New Orleans were supposed to be humans on the full moon, not wolves.
"Elijah," Klaus murmured as his brother appeared next to them. "I want you to take Caroline and see if you can bring her inside to the safe room."
"No," Caroline gasped out, as she looked at the growing wolves that were blocking the entrance to the living room stairs. She was not going anywhere near a wolf, even if it was with Elijah who was a nearly indestructible Original. "I am not going near them," she whimpered out.
Klaus and his brother exchanged glances and then stared at the wolves. "They're not attacking," Klaus stated. "They're waiting."
"For what?" Elijah asked as Rebekah and Stefan made their way through the crowd and next to them. The two wore both grim faces, and it was obvious the crowded was looking toward the Originals for their orders.
"Niklaus what on earth is going on?" Rebekah demanded as she looked him.
Nik glared at her. "If I knew people's heads would already be on the ground, sister," he sneered, his grip on Caroline only tightening. The air in the room was thickening, and Caroline could feel Klaus's nerves were rattled, as with every second she could feel his grip tightening on her waist.
"We have to do something," Elijah remarked, rather calmly despite what was going on. People were shrieking, vampires had their fangs out, and the witches were conversing with themselves in a foreign language, no debt trying to find a spell to dissolve the wolf problem.
Nik opened his mouth to speak, but suddenly the lights shut off. Screams roared through the room, before suddenly one light on the second-floor balcony flickered back on to reveal someone standing there, they're eyes the hybrid yellow. It was Tyler Lockwood. "I should have known," Nik said he let go of Caroline and took a step forward. Suddenly people were making a pathway so that Nik stood in front of the crowd.
"Tyler Lockwood," Klaus began as stared at Tyler from below. "I don't recall inviting you to my party. I suppose you are behind this little stunt."
Tyler jumped onto the railing so he was standing on it. "I am here as a representative of the Crescent Wolf Pack," Tyler began crossing his arms. "Everyone of these wolves, now have a talisman that reverses the curse the coven put on them with the help of the vampires in this town. I am here to tell you, that tomorrow once the full moon rises, a war will come to New Orleans. There will be blood split for all the years you kept them cursed," Tyler announced ominously to the crowd below.
A shiver run up her spine as the wolves jerked forward at the crowded before running out of the Abbatoire. The lights flickered off one more time, only this time when the lights turned back on they were off. Klaus faced the crowded, his eyes were looking for blood. "Make no mistake, those monsters will be dealt with," Klaus's voice boomed throughout the room before stalked back to where Caroline and his family. He shot a glare at Elijah, "I want to see you and Marcel in my office in fifteen minutes," he said before taking Caroline by the arm and leading her upstairs.
If Caroline friendship with Tyler wasn't completely destroyed before tonight, it was most definitely ruined after what he pulled earlier. He had ruined by far, one of the best moments in her whole entire life. Those moments she had with Nik, her sweet Nik, as they danced around were ones that she would remember for her whole life. In those precious moments, Nik had let himself be truly happy. It was a struggle for Nik to let himself be happy, truly happy and in love like he was earlier. Most of the time Caroline just saw glimpses of what it was like when he was like that, and tonight he had been fully embracing it. Then Tyler and the wolves had to show up and ruin everything. After Tyler had disappeared, Klaus had dragged her back into the bedroom and told her to stay there. When she had tried to step out, she had found a vampire guard placed outside the bedroom. She had been told, rather polity, that was she was stay put in the room. Usually, such demands would outrage her, but she was distraught by the events. The thought of wolves being so close to her horrified her.
For the fifth time since trying to fall asleep, Caroline sat up and turned the lamp on the nightstand on again. She pulled out the book she had been reading and flipped it open to the third chapter. Unless Nik was up late working on a painting, she had never fallen asleep in this bed by herself. The clock read two in the morning, and she knew Klaus was holed up in the office with Elijah and Marcel, possibly more people. Or even more possible, Nik was going out and slaughtering the wolves. Even though they were people, Caroline knew whatever happened to them was their own fault. It was one thing to break the curse, but it was another to declare war on the witches and vampires of New Orleans. Especially when Klaus was in charge of them. This war, though, it would bring out the darkness in Klaus. The darkness that she hadn't seen him in so long. The sound of the door opening , caused Caroline to close her book.
"Nik," she said as he walked through the door. He was drenched in sweat, some dried blood was on his noticeably dirty white dress shirt, and black tuxedo shoes were scratched behind repair. "What on earth happened?" Caroline asked concerned threaded through her voice.
"Why are you still up, love?" He questioned as he unbuttoned the damaged shirt, and threw it on the ground. It was obviously he was exhausted, but his frustration outweighed it.
"I couldn't sleep without you," she admitted as she pulled back the covers and climbed out the bed. She crossed her arms, as she walked closer to him. "What happened?"
Klaus clenched his jaw, as he kicked off his shoes before slipping out of his pants. "I am not in the mood to talk, Caroline. Go to bed, I need to shower," he stated. The words were short and demanding, and she could tell the night had only gotten worse for him.
"Nik," she murmured as she followed him into the bathroom. Like the rest of the house, the bathroom was immaculate. All white cabinets were covered with marble countertops which held sinks, above each sink were large golden mirrors, were to her right. A large claw foot tub for two stood on the center wall, while the large glass shower was in the corner next to it. Klaus didn't reply to her instead slept off his boxers and turned on the shower, before he stepped in.
"Really," Caroline said underneath her breath as leaned against the marble wall that lined shower, and ignored her presence. Nik could be stubborn, but so was Caroline. Defeat was something neither of them accepted easily. Without so much as a second thought, Caroline peeled off the shirt of his she had worn to bed, before dropping her panties to the ground and stepping out of them. If he wanted to do things the difficult way, so be it. Caroline pulled opened the glass door and stepped in.
"Caroline," Klaus groaned as he turned around to face her, as he had been leaning against the wall opposite of the door were the shower head was attached to. "I thought I told you to go to bed."
"I can't when I am worried about you," Caroline confessed as she stepped next to him. The water began to dampen her hair and skin, sending relaxing vibes throughout her body. However, it didn't do anything to help settle her mind and thoughts. "What happened?"
"We just made the first move is all," Nik admitted as he ran his fingers through his hair. "I spent all summer ensuring the Quarter would be safe for you, only for some wolves to come ruin everything. I should have killed Lockwood would he pulled his last stunt."
The mentioning of killing Tyler didn't even phase her. In her mind, Tyler had put her life in danger by bringing a whole pack of wolves in the same building as her. All of it would have taken is one of those wolves losing focused and she could have been dead. "How many are gone?" Caroline questioned, her voice soft.
"Four," He answered truthfully. "Not enough to hurt their numbers. They were just the ones strangling behind in the Quarter. I am going out to the Bayou tomorrow, and see how much damage I can cause."
"Do you have to?" Caroline asked. She knew he would go to the extreme to keep her safe. If it meant the killing of the wolves in New Orleans he would, but she wasn't sure if she was ready to be responsible for that amount of carnage.
"I do," he paused. "If I don't there will be discontent within vampire community and not to mention the witches. I am going to have Stefan, take you to Mystic Falls for a few days, why I deal with this."
"You can't!" Caroline exclaimed as she wrapped her arms around him. "I don't want to leave you."
Slowly, Klaus placed his arms around her waist. "It will only be a few days-
"No," Caroline said. "You don't get to send me off when things get tough. I know it's a hard concept for you, but you don't pack up the ones you love when you decided it's okay," she ranted as she pulled away from him. "I am staying here, rather you like it or not."
"Caroline-
"I love you," she stated looking into his eyes. "I get you're not exactly the good guy, but I am going to be here even if you come home covered in blood head to toe."
Carefully, Klaus pushed her hair back and tucked it behind her ear. The water ran down both of their bodies, and she could that Klaus was taking in what she had to say. "You can stay," He said as he ran his hands down her back. "But if the wolves come into this house one more time, you're on the first plane back to Virginia."
"Fine," Caroline relented as she stepped closer. "Now, do you need help showering?" She asked suggestively, let her finger trail down his taunt stomach.
Klaus chuckled as he pulled her against his chest. "I thought you would never ask," he said before his lips crashed against hers.
Before Caroline knew it her back was up against the shower wall, her legs wrapped his waist. His fangs scratch the skin of her neck, almost asking for permission. Without any words, Caroline titled her neck to her side, as his fingernails clawed into his own shoulder, drawing blood for her to drink. Simultaneously, his fangs sank into her neck as she drank the blood from the crook of his shoulder. It never struck her as odd, that she let him bite her. Despite, werewolf venom being the one thing that could kill her, Caroline found it comforting when they shared blood. To her, it was just another way of showing him, how much she loved him. After days like this, that is wanted he needed the most, to be reminded that she loved him, no matter what. Even if his darkness took him over, she would the light that would bring him back.
