This is the side story of "Sweet as Candy" about Sakura and Kuga. They are my second favorite couple in "Kaichou wa Maid Sama!" and I just felt like writing a one chapter story about them. I will update the main story soon.

Sweet as Candy: Soda Candy
Have you ever wondered if fairy tale like romances does exist? The answer is yes, however probability of a fairy tale like romance to happen is extremely small though. The probability of being involved in a fairy tale like romance is probably smaller than being struck by a lightning. Yet, Hanazono Sakura is an extremely lucky girl who was able to be a fairy tale romance without being struck by a lightning. Here, is her story.
Since high school times, Sakura has always been doing some charity work at a hospital near her house almost every Sunday. She would play with the kids in the hospital, and sometimes she would bring healthy bake goods to them. People in the hospital adore Sakura, especially the kids. To them she was just like a pure fluffy living angel. Other than playing with the kids in the hospital and treated as a living angel, Sakura is just like the other girls her age.
Just as usual, Sakura (24 years old) went to the hospital on a sunny Sunday to do her charity work. As usual she played with the kids, and as usual emergencies happen.
"Orgghhh….." A kid at the corner of the play room puked.
"Takeshi-kun are you ok?" Sakura ran to the child puking at the corner.
"I…feel… sick…" The child murmured.
"Did something happen?" A nurse ran into the play room and asked.
"I think Takeshi-kun is really sick, you might want to bring him to his doctor." Sakura suggested as she helped the sick child stand up.
"OK…" The nurse brought the sick child away from the play room.
"Hmm… I don't think we should let the kids play in the play room…" One of the charity workers suggested.
"True…" The other charity worker nodded.
"How about brining the kids on a little walk outside? It's spring, so I'm pretty sure it's not too cold for them." Sakura suggested.
"Then… who's going to clean…" Another charity worker pointed at the pungent puddle in the corner.
"I'll go get the janitor and help the cleaning, take the kids outside, they won't like the smell." Sakura said.
"Thank you, Hanazono-san!" The other charity worker said as they brought the kids out the play room.
"It's not a really big thing…" Sakura smiled and answered back humbly.
Sakura went to find the janitor at the storage room, but the janitor wasn't there so Sakura just got a bucket of water and a mop. She started to clean the pungent puddle right away. After cleaning, Sakura looked around her; she made sure there was no one in the room. Suddenly, Sakura stood up straight, held the mop like it was a guitar, then she started to sing while pretending to play the guitar.
"Nee~ kimi wa dou shite naiteru no? Oshiete yo boku ni dake ni~" Sakura started to sing out her favorite song from her favorite band with her sweet voice.
As Sakura sang she practically pretended that there was a group of audience in front of her while she sang. Though Sakura was a living angel, but she is just like the other girls her age.
"Yume no!" Sakura pointed at her imaginary audience.
"Hana o!"
"Sakasemashouuu!" Sakura sang passionately.
"Kitto."
"Kono yoru ga akeru made~" Sakura swung her head like a real rocker.
"Hana o"
"Sakasemashou!" Sakura swung her hands a few times like she was strumming the guitar. "Kono omoi kanjite~"
Sakura continued to sing the song until the really end and she was really happy. Every time when no one is looking, Sakura would always sing passionately with all her heart.
"HOO~ That was awesome" Sakura wiped her forehead. "I'm so into the singing I actually start to hear illusion chorus singing for me."
Sakura paused, she thought for a moment. Never in Sakura's life she imagined or heard illusion of her own chorus. Her hands started to have cold sweat and she felt her heart throbbing irregularly. Sakura turned around.
"Not bad." A boy with a cast on his left hand with face mask covering his face said to Sakura. His hair was a really shiny light blonde and light brown eyes. The face mask made it hard to judge whether he was good looking or not.
"Kyaaaaaaa!" Sakura screamed out of embarrassment. When Sakura was checking if anyone was in the room, she forgot to check if she closed the door or not, and clearly she did not.
"Calm down, the singing was great…." The boy paused for a moment and started to chuckle softly. "So was the guitar playing…."
"Ahhhh!" Sakura squatted to the floor and hid her face with her arms. "This is so embarrassing…"
"What's the point of hiding? You've already done it!" The boy started to laugh really outloud.
"Hey! Stop laughing!" Sakura shouted.
"Just give me a moment here to calm down…" The boy still continued to laugh and finally after a few minutes he stopped.
"I'm going to put this back so bye…" Sakura rapidly rushed out towards the door with the mop and the bucket of water.
"Wait!" The boy grabbed onto to Sakura's arms. "What's your name?"
"I don't want to tell you." Sakura pouted. Since Sakura is a pretty girl, boys often try to pick her up and Sakura doesn't really prefer that.
"Sakura~ I'm so sorry I wasn't there!" The janitor ran to the play room and apologized to Sakura. "Sorry for making you clean instead."
"No it's ok" Sakura smiled. "It's not something big."
"I'll go put this back in to storage room." The janitor took the mop and bucket away from Sakura. "You guys can continue your conversation."
"Nice to meet you, Sakura" The boy chuckled.
"L-L-Let of my hand!" Sakura slid her hands back to herself. She was not used to boys touching her, Misaki was always there to keep the boys away from Sakura.
"You are a fan of UxMishi, right?" The boy asked.
"H-H-How did you know?" Sakura was shocked.
"Just an instinct." The boy replied.
"So what do you think about the band?" The boy suddenly asked.
Sakura stared at the boy for a moment, their eyes were staring into each others. For a moment Sakura had this really familiar feeling but she can't really recall.
"They have great music." Sakura replied. "However I think their agency isn't doing a good job."
"Why would you think that way?" The boy asked.
"Hmm…" Sakura thought for awhile. "It feels like their agency is emphasizing too much on UxMishi's appearance, and it feels like they are trying to sell their faces but not the music."
"You're sharp." The boy commented.
"What?" Sakura didn't quite understand what he meant.
"I agree with you." The boy nodded. "I heard that they recently have some problems with their agency."
"How come I don't know…" Sakura, as a big fan of UxMishi, how come she didn't know this news.
"It's just a rumor going around." The boy shrugged. "Not published to the media yet."
"How come you know something that is not published…." Sakura gave him a stare filled with suspect.
"Will you believe if... I work in the music field?" The boy asked.
"If you say you do, then I'll believe you." Sakura replied. "So what do you work as?"
"I work as a… songwriter." The boy replied with some hesitation.
"No wonder you know these things before the fans do." Sakura nodded.
"Yeah…" The boy replied.
"Sakurai-san! Why did you leave your room without permission." An angry looking nurse walked down the hall, towards the
"Oh darn!" The boy looked at Sakura and stuck his tongue out. "Busted. Then until we meet again."
The boy ran out the play room, and escaped from the nurse. Sakura just stood there in the play room, as she watched the boy ran away from the nurse. She had no idea what type of encounter she just had and she had no idea what conversation she just had, and she didn't even know the boy's name. Sakura just treated that little encounter as a small special surprise that spices up her life by a little.
Monday came, and Sakura went to work as usual. However, she wasn't able to concentrate. Not because of that boy she met yesterday. It was because she found out the news that UxMishi might be disbanded. That didn't really make her day. Her worsened went she found out that the vocalist of UxMishi, Sakurai Kuga, fell down from the stage because some fans pulled him.
The whole week, Sakura was in her grumpy mood. Finally weekend came; she still went to the hospital and played with the kids.
"Ah~ Finally the kids are asleep." One of the charity workers stretched her arms.
"They're so energetic today." Another charity worker commented.
"Indeed!" Sakura commented cheerfully. She was holding a big blanket sheet.
"What is that blanket for?" One of the charity workers asked.
"I'm going to bring them to the rooftop to dry them." Sakura explained. "Sachi said that her blanket doesn't feel good, so I thought about washing her blanket and let it sun dry."
Sakura walked out the room, and went to the rooftop. She was humming songs as she set the blanket sheet over the drying racket.
"Singing again?" A voice asked, then Sakura looked back. It was the boy from last time.
The boy was still wearing a facemask over his face.
"err…. Hi?" Sakura greeted.
"Why don't you sing it loudly like last time?" The boy asked.
"To prevent awkward situations like last time." Sakura replied. "What are you doing up here?"
"Photosynthesis." The boy then lied flat on his back, letting the sun shine. "Also for inspiration."
Sakura saw a pencil and a piece of paper right next to the boy.
"Are you working?" Sakura asked.
"Yep, trying to think of a new song." The boy replied back.
"But you're injured right now." Sakura reminded.
"I broke my left arm, but I can still write with my right." The boy explained.
Suddenly the boy started to hum some melodies. After humming, he sat up straight and took the pencil from his side, and started to jot down the notes.
"You're surprisingly diligent." Sakura sat beside the boy.
"Only when it comes to music." The boy added.
"Yes. Yes." Sakura nodded.
"What do you think?" The boy passed the piece of paper to Sakura.
"I don't know how to read music sheets…." Sakura said.
"The lyrics then." The boy said.
"hmmm…." Sakura read the lyrics. "Is it ok if I'm honest?"
"Go ahead and say what you think." The boy answered.
"I think the lyrics are shallow." Sakura commented. "It feels like you are writing this because you have to."
"I'm impressed." The boy laughed as he lied down on his back again.
"Hm?" Sakura tilted her head.
"I wrote this song because I had to." The boy sighed.
"Then I feel sorry for you, but this is life." Sakura said.
"True." The boy sighed. "But I like the melody I made."
Then the boy started to hum out the melody, his voice was clear and attractive. It reminded Sakura of someone else's voice but she can't recall who.
"I think you should keep the melody." Sakura said. "It's really nice."
"Hey! Sakura!" The boy called out.
"Yes?" Sakura asked.
"What's your full name?" The boy asked.
"Hanazono Sakura." Sakura replied back. "You?"
"It's a secret~" The boy just chuckled and said.
"Hey!" Sakura pouted. "That's not fair! You get to know my name but I don't get to know your name."
"Well~" The boy was smiling, though you couldn't see his whole face, but through his light brown eyes you know that he is smiling. "Life isn't always fair."
"Pinch of justice." Sakura pinched the cheeks of the boy.
"Hey! That hurts." The boy whined.
Both of them started to laugh, though there was nothing really that they were able to laugh to. It was more like the atmosphere between them made both of them feel really comfortable.
From that day on, Sakura looked forward to every Sunday. The boy would always write his music on the rooftop, and Sakura would always go to the rooftop to visit him whenever she had free time. She enjoyed the time with him. However, she still haven't seen the boy's face.
One day Sakura and the boy were on the rooftop again. As usual they discussed about various things, and Sakura helped the boy with his music writing too. Then it started to rain. Sakura and the boy ran towards the staircase right away. They were sitting at the staircase and they tried to find their breathing back from running.
"Hey, you know?" The boy suddenly said to Sakura.
"What?" Sakura tilted her head and looked at the boy.
"Being with you makes me happy." The boy said.
"Why so sudden?" Sakura asked.
"Just felt like saying it." The chuckled. "Even waving goodbye to you makes me happy."
"Eh?" Sakura glared. "Does that mean it's good to see me going away?"
"Nope. It just feels like you are melting into my daily routine." The boy explained.
"Well, I guess that's a nice twist." Sakura nodded.
The boy leaned towards Sakura and gave her a really light kiss. There was only a slim wall of the facemask that was separating their lips.
"W-W-What was that for?" Sakura gasped when the boy returned to his own place.
"What do you think?" The boy laughed.
"….." Sakura just simply blushed.
It was clear that they both like each other, but to Sakura she can't accept this boy yet. One, she has no courage to figure out their relationship. Two, she doesn't even know the boy's name.
"Look there's a rainbow!" The boy pointed at the sky that was revealed from the open door of the staircase towards the rooftop.
"Wow…. It looks like it's glimmering." Sakura commented.
These sweet days didn't continue for a really long time. Very soon, the boy's arm healed. It's a great thing, but rather sad for Sakura.
"My hands healed." The boy proudly swayed his arm in the air.
"Don't be too rough." Sakura stopped the boy from his motion. "It might fall off…"
"Hey, wanna go hang out?" The boy asked.
"What?" Sakura blinked her eyes.
"Just go with him." The nurse said. "You've helped out a lot, take a break from charity work."
"Wait for me at the lobby. I have to change to normal clothes first." The boy said.
"…." Sakura thought in her mind. 'I haven't even said yes yet…'
However Sakura's opinion didn't really matter in this situation. Sakura still waited for the boy at the lobby and they still went to hang out. The boy still had his face mask on, though he was changed into a simply plain t-shirt, a short sleeve jacket, pair of black framed glass, and a pair of jeans.
"Where should we go?" The boy asked.
"How about let's get some lunch first." Sakura suggested.
"At a simple family restaurant?" The boy asked.
"Agree." Sakura chuckled.
The boy grabbed onto to Sakura's hand and then looked at Sakura.
"I really wanted to do this." The boy said. "Yet, those cast were really annoying."
Sakura just simply blushed as she walked on the streets with the boy. They did various of stuff for the rest of the day. From eating, watching movie, going to a game arcade, they did almost everything they could do.
"It was fun today~" Sakura stretched a little. "I'm exhausted."
"Yeah it was…ah!" Before the boy could continue his sentence someone bumped the boy.
The boy fell onto the floor, and his face mask and his black framed glasses fell onto the floor. Everyone around them gasped. They were surprised to see UxMishi's vocalist, Sakurai Kuga, on the floor.
"You…" Sakura stared at Kuga with confused eyes.
"I…." Before Kuga could say anything, a whole group of people started to surround him.
Sakura disappeared into the crowd that was started to surround Kuga.
"Sakura!" Kuga shouted, hoping that Sakura would listen to his explanation.
Sakura was walked away, and once she heard Kuga called out her name, she walked even faster. She was confused with mixed emotions. All this time that boy who she enjoyed her time with was Sakurai Kuga. The reason why Sakura was mad was because Kuga deceived her. It was fine at the beginning if Kuga didn't tell her his identity. However that rainy day at the staircase, they even kissed, but Kuga still didn't tell Sakura his identity. Sakura felt like Kuga didn't trust her.
Kuga pushed the crowd away, put on his disguise, and went searching for Sakura. Finally he found Sakura at the nearest subway station. Kuga didn't call out to Sakura, since Sakura had an emotionless yet depressed face on. He just simply followed her. On the train, on the streets, Kuga just simply followed Sakura quietly.
Finally, in front of Sakura's house, Sakura stopped walked.
"How long are you going to follow me?" Sakura asked, though she didn't turn her head around.
"I'll stop here." Kuga said.
"How can you deceive me?!" Sakura shouted.
"I didn't mean to." Kuga looked to the side.
"It feels like you don't trust me at all…" Sakura held her tears.
"I like you." Kuga confessed.
"Our distance is too far apart." Sakura shouted back. "I can't afford that pressure of having an idol boyfriend."
"Sakura…" Kuga called out.
"To start out with, you don't even trust me." After Sakura finished her sentence she ran away.
Once Sakura got home, she locked the door several times, and rushed into her room immediately. Sakura sat silently in her room; she didn't want to think about anything. Since Kuga deceived her and that was the truth. Even if Sakura can accept the fact that Kuga deceived her, she still can't accept the fact that Kuga is actually a star. Someone that is out of her reach, that invisible distance between them made it hard for Sakura to accept Kuga. As the thoughts filled up Sakura's mind, her eyes started to turn blurry, and the next second Sakura's eyes were bursting with tears.
Outside of Sakura's house, Kuga was standing. He had a pair of black frame glasses on and a face mask covering his face. He knew that Sakura was angry about him, and he knew that they will probably not meet each other anymore. He knew they were fated to be two parallel lines that will never intersect each other. The little short period of time, that encounter in the hospital, was only a miss calculation in the function,
The next morning Sakura went to work even though her eyes were swollen. She told her self that everything will resume back into normal, to the old days, to the regular days.
It was after work, Sakura and Shizuko were going to have dinner together. Misaki didn't join them as usual. Sakura and Shizuko were on the taxi ready to go to the restaurant.
"Is it ok if I turn on the radio?" The taxi driver asked.
"Sure, please do." Shizuko replied.
"Thanks." The taxi driver turned on the radio.
The screeching sound of the radio filled up the taxi, then finally the connection was stable.
"Thank you for listening to 107.5 radio station! Our show is about to end." The voice from the radio said excitingly. "But! A veryyyyy special guest just showed up! Sakurai Kuga from UxMishi!"
Sakura felt her heart squeeze together for one moment.
"Hi." Kuga's voice filled up the small space in the taxi that made Sakura's heart squeezing even harder.
"So Sakurai-kun! You've got a special gift for us right?" The excited DJ of the radio station asked.
"A whole new single, fresh from the studio." Kuga replied.
"Well, then I believe that this song will be a good mark for the end of our show today!" The DJ commented.
"I believe so." Kuga chuckled and said.
"So what is so special about this song?" The DJ asked.
"Well… I wrote this song when I was in the hospital waiting or my left hand to heal." Kuga answered.
"And…." The DJ asked for more.
"This song is call 'Girl', music and lyrics both by me." Kuga replied.
"oooo~ What a title." The DJ commented. "Let's enjoy the song!"
The intro of the song came in, from soft to loud.

*I don't know if the anime had this song featuring*
(I translated the lyrics myself since I couldn't find the English translation. I'm not exactly sure if this is 100% accurate but I'm pretty sure it's 90% accurate.)
"Wow!" The DJ exclaimed. "Such touching lyrics."
"Thanks." Kuga replied.
"So Sakurai-kun, after this show where will you be going?" The DJ asked. "You've just finished your new single I suppose you are going to get some rest."
"Before I go to take my little holiday, I'm going to a see to a place where I can see the most beautiful rainbow." Kuga emphasized the rainbow part of this statement.
"Rainbow? At night?" The DJ chuckled. "No wonder why I can't become a musician, I can't even understand one."
Kuga just simply laughed.
"Well then! That's it for our show today!" The ending song of the radio show entered.
"Eh?!" Shizuko glanced at Sakura. "Are you ok?"
Sakura cried, she knew that the song lyrics were about Kuga and her. She can't deny the fact that she likes Kuga anymore. Even if they are very far apart, Sakura doesn't care. All Sakura wanted to do now was to meet him, meet Kuga.
"Mr. Driver, please let me get off here." Sakura said as she opened the car door. "Sorry Shizuko, I'll treat you dinner some other day."
Once Sakura got off the taxi, she started to run towards the nearest subway station. She took the subway to the station of that particular hospital, the place where she met Kuga. Sakura continued to run, on the half way she kicked off her heels so she can run even faster. Finally, Sakura arrived at the rooftop of the hospital.
A boy with black leather jacket, and dark blue jeans was standing at the rooftop, his back was facing Sakura. The boy turned around, his motion caused his light blonde hair to swift in the air, and then his light brown eyes caught Sakura's pinkish brown eyes.
"How can you do this to me…" Sakura started to cry as she slid to the floor. "You made me kick my favorite heels away."
Kuga walked towards Sakura and bent down to be at the same elevation of Sakura.
"Geez… really?" Kuga looked at Sakura's bare dirty feet. "I'll buy you new heels then."
"10 pairs." Sakura sniffed.
"Yes. Yes." Kuga nodded and chuckled. "Thank you for coming."
"There's no rainbow here." Sakura pouted.
"There is." Kuga smirked. He got his finger and pointed at himself. "Right here."
"Stop flattering yourself." Sakura laughed while crying.
"Will you become apart of this rainbow?" Kuga asked.
"What?" Sakura didn't understand.
"I'm asking you to become my girlfriend." Kuga blushed a little.
"…." Sakura continued to cry, even louder. "You idiot!"
"Hey…." Kuga looked at Sakura, with a depressed face.
"You knew that I would say yes!" Sakura hooked her arms around Kuga's and continued to cry.
"You know that if we really become a couple, we can't be like the other couples. You know that right?" Kuga asked as he hugged Sakura back gently.
"I know…" Sakura buried her face between Kuga left shoulder and neck.
"You cannot brag that your boyfriend is a super cool idol too." Kuga reminded.
"Can I at least brag that my boyfriend has a super good voice?" Sakura asked.
"Yes you can." Kuga chuckled.
"There's no looking back right?" Sakura asked.
"There is no looking back." Kuga replied.
Kuga continued to hug Sakura until she finished crying. Finally, Sakura finally settled down with her crying.
"Soda candy." That was the first thing Sakura said after she finished crying.
"What?" Kuga asked.
"Our relationship." Sakura smiled.
"I don't get that." Kuga chuckled.
"It's sweet and exciting." Sakura giggled. "But the exciting and bubbly feeling of the soda candy can only be kept if you keep your mouth shut."
Kuga leaned his forehead to Sakura's forehead. He didn't say anything, Sakura did the same too.
After a few days, Sakura was in her house watching the television. She was watching a tv program reporting about UxMishi, and their new hit single.
"I love their new single!" One of the fans said on the program.
"The lyrics are so sweet!" Another fan screeched.
Sakura just giggled.
"What are you laughing at?" Kuga, who was sitting right next to her asked.
"They're going to be so mad if they know that the song was written for a girl." Sakura explained.
"They won't know." Kuga said. "At least for now."
Kuga said the last part of his sentence silently.
"Eh? Pardon me?" Sakura asked.
"Nope. Nothing." Kuga just placed his arms over Sakura's shoulders and gave her a sweet little kiss.
