Chapter 10: (Finding The Scabbard)
Shadow woke up in time for lunch. He hadn't remembered falling asleep but he had. He knew right away when the female mouse brought lunch that something was wrong.
"You seem worried," Shadow commented.
"It's Matthias," the young female stated. "He's somehow gotten up to the loft the sparrows live in. no doubt he used Warbeak to do it."
"Warbeak?" the rat inquired.
"She's a young sparrow warrior."
"The young bird seen this morning," Shadow pieced together.
"You saw what happened this morning?" the female, Shadow believed her name was Cornflower, questioned.
"Yes."
"Well after Matthias's stupid stunt Jess squirrel went up to that old weather vane to check if what we're looking for is there but it wasn't and the sparrows attacked," Cornflower told him also saying how one of Matthias's shoes was found and that's how they know he's up there.
"You retaliated with stones and arrows with broken tips but one of the birds was injured," Shadow finished.
"Yes. That was Warbeak that got hit. I tried to bandage her wing. She bit me. Matthias thought it was funny and I got angry and left him alone to take care of her. And he does this."
"You are angry with him yet you are worried at the same time. Why do you worry when he angers you so much?" asked Shadow in confusion.
"I care about him," Cornflower said. "A lot."
Cornflower left so Shadow could rest and heal. The rat thought about what the mouse had said. She cared for another mouse who seemed to always anger her. But how? Why? Shadow just didn't understand.
As the day started drifting into early evening the male mouse Matthias still hadn't been found. The hare Shadow knew to be Basil rallied everyone to help get Matthias back from the sparrows. Shadow watched from the infirmary window, still too injured to leave the room yet.
As Shadow watched the abbey assembled to help one of its own he slowly understood why. This was a family here. That was why they helped each other. But that doesn't explain why they were helping him after what he had done.
Shadow saw the sparrows leave and wondered where they were going. They seemed to be heading off in a hurry. Why would they leave if they had the mouse in their domain? The rat didn't see the mouse with them so he must have still been in the loft.
"Or dead," Shadow whispered to himself.
The squirrel started climbing leaving picks in the wall so Matthias could climb down if he was found alive. Suddenly movement on the roof of the loft caught Shadow's eye. It was the mouse everyone had been looking for. He had something in his hand but as Shadow observed and wondered what it could be a gust of wind almost knocked the mouse to the ground far below.
Shadow noticed the sparrows returning and the big one he assumed was the leader looked angry. He also noticed the mouse and attacked him.
Shadow wanted to go and assist the mouse since his family was helping him recover but when he moved his leg it hurt and he had to lean against the window.
The big sparrow grabbed onto whatever it was the mouse had taken from the sparrows. He tried to take it back but the young mouse wouldn't let go soon they were both headed for the ground and landed in the pond on the abbey grounds.
"They could surly drown," Shadow helplessly said unable to tear his eyes from the seen unfolding.
The badger called out to an otter who rallied other otters to help search for the bird and the mouse. Everyone searched for several minutes before both the bird and the mouse were pulled from the water.
The bird had drown but the mouse was still alive thankfully. Shadow watched as the abbey leader resuscitated the young mouse and he came too. Shadow let out a breath.
The mouse was okay and it looks like the abbey had found what it was they were looking for. Shadow laid down in his bed to rest his hurting leg. It would be dinner time soon now that all the commotion was dying down.
