Story 11: A Small Act of Disobedience
Jak and Daxter were listening to Samos' lecture- or at least pretending to listen. Daxter really didn't care much and Jak's mind was elsewhere; tomorrow Keira was coming home and she was staying, they were never going to be separated again. Over the last few weeks she had been sending things through the warp gate and Jak had popped in every once in a while, but he hadn't seen her, so she couldn't have been staying long, most likely to drop off more machinery. The inside of the lower hut looked like a mess. Like Keira had been trying to work on something and she just needed to put it together.
He was snapped out of his thoughts when he felt Samos' stick collide with the top of his head. Daxter received the same treatment, "Ow!" He yelled, "Ya know one of these days I'm going to break that sick of yours if you don't stop hitting me with it!"
"Well if you paid attention I wouldn't have to hit you with it, would I?"
"I was paying attention, you were talking about that creepy island that the lurkers live on." Jak was now a bit more interested in the lesson than he had been. He didn't realize Samos was talking about Misty Island. "Why do I need to listen?" Daxter asked, "You don't need to tell me not to go there, I already know."
He glared at Jak who was looking at Samos, wanting to know more about this Island that he had never set foot on. "Don't even think about it Jak." Samos snapped, "There are more lurkers on Misty Island then in the jungle, it is very dangerous there. Not only that but we don't know very much about that island."
Daxter looked at Jak and then he sighed, "You know you're only encouraging him right?"
Samos looked at Jak, "I cannot say this enough: don't go to that island!"
Daxter put his hands behind his head and laid on the floor, "If you really wanted him to stay away from it you shouldn't have said anything about it."
Samos sighed, "Alright boys, that's enough for today, you may leave."
They both got up and headed out. They started to head for the beach but instead Jak walked to the fisherman's dock; he sat there looking at the Island. They didn't know much about it because no one was brave enough to go and explore it. Well he was brave enough; he jumped into the fish man's boat. "What are you doing?" Daxter asked. Jak smiled and pointed to the island. "You're trying to get me killed aren't you?" Jak chucked as he started to untie the boat from the dock." Daxter sighed, "If you want to go to an island filled with evil monsters that can kill you, why not go at night when they'll most likely be asleep?" Jak looked at him, "I'm just saying you'd have an easier time exploring the island that way." Jak looked at the island and then shrugged, climbing out of the boat. They started to head for the beach, "And it doesn't matter what I say, you're going to make me come along aren't you?" Jak smiled and nodded. Daxter groaned, "I hate you." Jak laughed.
Daxter spent the rest of the day trying to talk Jak out of going to the island, but it did nothing. Jak was still intent on going. Giving up, Daxter said that he was going to bed, Jak just let him go; he was going to wait until he was sure that the village had completely fallen asleep before going to the island, so there would be a few hours where Daxter could sleep, it made no difference to him.
Jak waited as the day turned to night and the villagers went about their usual routines before they would turn in for the evening. The fisherman had once again found the sculptor's muse in his speed boat and had to return her to him. The farmer was rounding up his yakcows back into their pens and the bird lady and the mayor were having a small argument. Jak walked back to his uncle's hut and was surprised to see him there. Nevertheless, his uncle smiled at him, "Hello my boy." He said, Jak looked at him confused, he hadn't been expecting his uncle to be there. "I know, I said I was leaving on my journey today, but it seemed that a good chunk of my precursor orbs have gone missing. And I think we both know who most likely took them." Jak nodded, thinking his uncle was right as he got into bed. "Calling it a night early are we?" Jak nodded. "That might be a good idea." His uncle said, blowing out the candles and getting into his own bed. "Good night Jak."
Jak just pretend to be asleep, for hours he just laid there. It was only about an hour before dawn when he got up. He grabbed a small bag off the floor, just in case he found something on that island. He put it on and then checked to make sure his goggles were sitting right before running out of the hut. He climbed up the cliff and found Daxter sleeping. Mumbling something about girls, Jak rolled his eyes and slightly kicked Daxter, who groaned. He looked at Jak from over his shoulder before turning back onto his side, "No." he said, "I'm not going." Jak grabbed him by the back of his shirt, getting him to his feet and started to drag him. Daxter managed to get free from the grip and looked at his friend while still walking with him back to the village, "I was really hoping you would have giving up on going there by now. Why do you even want to go?"
Jak sighed as they reached the mouth of the canyon. They looked out over the village, their home. Jak had lived here for as long as he could remember. Everything and everyone he ever knew, was in this little sea-side village. He and Keira used to sneak off at night to look at stars; this had been where he had met Daxter and had become friends with him. The jungle had become a play-ground for them as they had become older children. Daxter, Keira and himself had so many happy memories here. But they had also gone through some hard times, and grief. But no matter how bad the storms got, they weathered them together, growing stronger and closer as friends, creating a bond that no time or distance could change. This place held so many great memories for him; this place, no matter where he went or what he did, this place would always be his home. He could always return here, he knew that. There was a big world to explore and he wanted to see it all, and it was all going to start with the last place he had yet to set foot on in his little village.
Jak didn't need to say any of this. Even if Daxter couldn't fully understand, he had known Jak long enough to know that his mind was made up and there was no stopping him. He sighed, "There's no stopping you is there?" Jak shook his head. "And you're going to make me tag-a-long too aren't you?" Jak smiled and nodded. "I really hate this idea… and you." Jak laughed as they started to climb down.
They got to the fisherman's bout and started it up. Over the years they had learned how to drive it so the ride wasn't as crazy as it had been when they were little. As they glided on the water, Jak looked up at Samos' hut; was Keira there yet, was she asleep? He didn't know. He was going to go check as soon as they got back. As he thought of Keira, Daxter –who now was making himself worried- vomited over the side of the boat, Jak rolled his eyes and then a sudden splash got him to sit up. He looked at the side of the boat to see Daxter trying to climb back in. Jak sighed and helped him up. Daxter fell back onto the boat and Jak started to laugh as Daxter scolded him for it.
The boat hit the shore and Jak jumped out and started to looked around. He knew Daxter said something but he wasn't listening. This island was like nothing he had ever seen, his whole life he had been serouned by the beautiful landscape that Sandover was; this place that sat just off the shore was a world of difference where Sandover was bright and colorful, this place was dark and grim. There were bones of huge monsters that snaked in and out of both the ground and rock walls. There were small pools of mud that smelled of decay. There was an air of danger here... and Jak liked it. His whole life he had lived in that peaceful village, where particle nothing bad ever happened; here, he knew there was danger and the thought more excited him then scared him.
Daxter was another story. Jak had dragged him to an island filled with monsters that had haunted him since he was a small boy. All he wanted to do was go home, but he couldn't without Jak. He would never leave his friend behind; the real reason he had let Jak drag him into this was because he wouldn't let his best friend come to this dangers place alone. Even if he couldn't do anything, Daxter would never abandon his friend.
The two found a group of lurkers standing near a large door, like they were waiting for someone. Jak climbed on a large rock that sat just behind the lurkers, Daxter followed and clumsily climbed it as well. Jak shushed him, not wanting to lurkers to know they were there. Then out of nowhere two elves, a man and a woman, appeared. They both floated above the ground and their skin was a sickly pale gray color. Who were these people? Jak thought as the man spoke, "Continue your search for artifacts and eco." He had a raspy voice, almost like it was hard for him to breathe, "If the locals possess precursor items, you know what to do."
"Deal harshly with anyone who strays from the village," the woman said, her voice was strong and commanding in a bit of a scary way, "We will attack it in due time." She finished as if the thought brought her pleasure
Jak and Daxter exchanged worried looks looked before quietly moving away. "We need to go back and warn everyone." Daxter said. Jak shushed him again. He knew they had to and they would, but the two elves they saw were up to something and maybe if they explored for just a little longer they would find out what and be able to stop them, or at least come up with a plan.
The two eventually came to a platform that had a giant pool in the middle of it. "What are we doing here anyway Jak? This place gives me the creeps." Jak of course didn't give an answer. He heard Daxter fall and turned, but then chuckled when he saw him lying on the ground. Daxter glared at him and then looked to see what he had tripped on. He saw some kind of old precursor… something, "Stupid precursor junk." He said, picking it up and then going to stand next to Jak near the pool. "Ick! What is that dark ooze?" Daxter asked, "It sure don't look friendly." Jak thought; he it had to be dark eco, he could remember Samos telling him about it. Daxter, on the other hand, was playing with the precursor artifact he had picked up, "The sage yaps on about the precursor who build this place all the time." Daxter said as if Jak didn't already know this. "Where did they go? Why did they build this crap?" He said, in a bad impassion of Samos, one that got Jak to smile. He threw the precursor artifact to Jak who caught it. "Now I like precursor orbs and power cells as much as the next guy," the artifact in Jak's hand suddenly started to glow with a red light, "But if you ask me they must have been real losers." Daxter said, looking back at Jak. "Wow! How did you that?" He asked, Jak didn't know, he didn't really have time to think about it because just then a lurker dropped down from the ceiling. Daxter hid behind his friend as they started to back up to the pool, "Jak I think we're in trouble!" The monster waved it's club around and roared. Jak, knowing he had to do something, acted on instinct; he ran at the monster and threw the artifact, which exploded on contact. The monster was gone, but Jak was thrown back, he collided with Daxter who fell into the pool. Jak, abruptly remembering what Samos had told him about dark eco, scanned the surface for any sign of his best friend. He didn't see anything and then an orange… something came shooting out of the pool, nearly hitting Jak. He crawled over to it, "Man that stung!" The orange creacher exclaimed, it sounded like Daxter. It got up and walked to him, "I told you we shouldn't have come here, had you listened…" Jak just started at it, this orange thing not only sounded like Daxter, in a way it looked like Daxter as well. Not only that, Jak thought he had seen this thing somewhere before. "Whaaaat?" Jak just stared at it; was this really Daxter? The thing looked at it's hand and then screamed, Jak quickly coved his ears; yep, it was Daxter. "Okay," Daxter said, calming down a bit, "I'm fine, I'm fine." He looked down at himself and then -jumping on Jak- screamed again. Jak pulled his friend off him and shushed him, "Don't tell me be quiet, you'd be freaking out too if you were suddenly changed into something else!" Daxter turned away and pouted, "You're going to have to fix this you know, I can't live my life like this! What if I actualy meet a girl?" Daxter's eyes widened and he jumped on Jak again, grabbing his shirt, "You've gotta fix this!" He hollered. Jak pulled him off again and looked towards the village, the sun was just starting to make it's way up the horizon. Samos would know what to do; they were going to get chewed out for coming here, but Jak couldn't think of another way to get Daxter back to normal. They started walking back to the boat, at one point Daxter stepped on a stick and the resulting cracking sound made him jump so high he landed right on Jak's shoulder, where he stayed until they were back on the boat.
By the time they reached the village, the sun was high in the sky. They walked to Samos' hut, they walked up the ramp and saw Samos meditating, Daxter took one step and Samos instantly turned to face them, "What in green tarnishes' do you two want?" He asked.
"We- we- we was" Daxter sputtered, "they was- and I- I was-"
"Don't tell me." Samos said, landing on the ground, "In stend of heeding my wisdom, the two of you decided to go mucking around in the only place I told you not to go, Misty Island."
"That's right, and then we-"
"And Daxter," Samos cut in, "You finaly took a much needed bath, but in a bath tub filled with dark eco."
"Look, old man!" Daxter yelled, now getting a little annoyed with the sage, "Are you ganna keep yapping, or you gonna help me out of this mess?"
"I'm gonna keep yapping," Samos said, "because, in my professional opinion, the change is an improvement." Daxter growled a little at this, "And besides," Samos smirked to himself, "I couldn't help you even if I wanted to."
"What?!" Daxter yelled.
"There's only one person who had a chance of retuning you to your previous form. Gol Acheron, the sage. But he lives far to the north; far, far to the north. Nobody has spoken to him in ages, I would teleport you there but I can't do that either. The yellow and red sages haven't turned on their teleport gates in a while and the blue sage just turned his off last night. The only other way north is through the fire canyon; but you two spend so much time there you know that you can't just walk through it."
"But you could fly over it." A female voice said from the doorway, "If you had a zoomer equipped with a heat shield." Both Jak and Daxter looked and couldn't believe what they saw. It was Keira, but she looked so different; the last time the boys had seen her she had long hair and she wore a skirt and a full shirt, now her hair was short and bit more stylized and she wore purple overalls and small tank-top that only covered her chest leaving her slim middle completely shown. They had never seen her like this and where dumbstruck by it. "I just happened to be working on such a thing at this very moment." Daxter jumped off Jak's shoulder and tried to show off the musles he didn't have as she walked by, "All I would need is twenty power cells to give it enough energy to stand up to the canyon's heat," she didn't even looked at him, "isn't that right, daddy?"
"Yes, Keira, that might work." He said, "But where are a boy, and a half-" he hit Daxter's head with his stick, "-going to get twenty power cells?"
"From the villagers." Keira said in a matter-of-fact tone, "And even if they aren't willing to just give them away, greasing their palms with a few precursor orbs should do the trick. And I'll bet there are even more of them out in the wild, just waiting for a brave adventurer to find." She said, smiling at Jak and leaning close to him, he couldn't help but to smile as well.
"Well, we've got the brave adventurer at least." Daxter said, just wanting Keira to look at him and acknowledge that he was there.
"Brave adventurer?" Samos asked, "You two have never even ventured that far away from the village." Keira started to walk out of the hut and down to her workshop. "If you ask me the best place for you to start looking for power cells is at Geyser Rock."
"Um… we won't find any more of that dark gooey eco stuff will we?" Daxter asked, "Because I'd hate to fall in again and turn into you."
"Get in there!" Samos ordered, pointing at the warp gate, "Before I turn you both into ferns." The two boys looked at each other before jumping through the gate.
Samos sighed; so this was how it began. He looked out the window; Geyser Rock could be seen from there. They would find Gol, but Samos knew that he would not turn Daxter back. Daxter would never be an elf again. Every child in Haven city knew the story of how a young man had freed the four good sages and, with the power of light eco, had sealed away the dark sages. This hero of the light disappeared just before the Metal-heads had shown up. In his youth, Samos had believed it to be only a story- he had even told it to Keira as a bed time story when she was only a baby. But when he had come here all those years ago he knew it was more than just some children's tale. Jak was that light, who in only a few short years would become known as The Dark Monster of Haven. Even so, he would still be that hero that he would prove himself as in the weeks to come. Jak had grown into a strong and independent young man; he was celver and adventurous, he was brave and kind-hearted, and now it was time to see if he was ready to fulfill his destiny and Samos didn't doubt he was. For what more could be expected of a destiny of Mar.
Jet: I can't believe I'm done with this. I know this took forever but it was something that I wanted to do, I don't write this stuff for people's approval. I love to hear what people think, good or bad. So don't be shy, let me know what you really think as for why it took me so long to get this all done well, part of it was writer's block and part of it was me stalling. I don't know what to write now. I'm not don't with my TLF write out yet and I don't want to post anything with Lilly and her friends until TLF is done. Now don't worry I do have a few stories that I did a while back that I never posted so in the coming weeks. Next week I will be posting my first Last of Us fic so keep an eye out for that and the week after that I'll be posting a MLP fic both fics are one-shots. After that I don't know what I'm posting so I might disappear for a while. Sorry. So I'll see everyone when I see them.
