CHAPTER 11: DEFINING OUR RELATIONSHIP
Practice was taking too long for Isaac, he wanted nothing more than for it to be over, and so he could talk to Brooke. He would see her and talk about what happened before he got to the field, Brooke had kissed him. And he could replay the feel of it every time he wasn't being tackled to the ground. He actually felt that he had more energy as he played. He knew that he was slowly gaining Brooke's heart, and soon, if things work in his favor, he will own hers, like the way she had his.
He would occasionally look up at the bleachers and see Brooke working on her homework, since she wouldn't let her grades slip no matter what. He would see the way that she would occasionally just stop doing her work, and just stare off into space. She was most likely remembering what occurred, and thought of what they were going to talk about after practice. Maybe he was thinking of giving him a chance.
But he knew that he had to find Derek, to tell him that maybe joining his pack wouldn't be the best thing to do, since things were finally looking up for him. He wanted to ask if he could give him some time to settle things with Brooke, before he got bit and would lose his humanity and want to hunt for blood. But he had no way of contacting Derek, because the only thing he said was that he would find him.
Soon practice was finally over and Brooke couldn't be any more nervous. She had a hard time concentrating on her assignments when her thoughts were clouded of Isaac. She enjoyed that kiss; she was slowly falling for him. But how could their friendship from childhood develop into something more. She knew that no one would ever care for more than Isaac, since in every other relationship that she had, Isaac was always there to help her back on her feet, and had been there for every heartache. But that was different, because if something went wrong in this relationship, and who would be there to pick up the pieces, who would be the sun in her darkest days?
Who would be there to help her back on her feet, if Isaac breaks her heart? She thought that maybe she could mend things between Stiles and Scott, and they could be there for her, but who knows if that would even happen. And if it did, they would never understand her like Isaac would. She realized that the reason she couldn't see herself in a relationship with Isaac was because she was afraid.
She was afraid of going in this relationship, because there would be no safety net to catch her. If things took a turn for the worst, there would be no one to comfort her. She would have to go through heartache alone. And loose her best friend in the process, something that scared her the most. But could she hide her feelings, after she realized that she had them.
She probably couldn't… even if she wanted to.
Brooke was walking over to locker rooms, to wait for Isaac, hoping that maybe they would find out what to do with each other's feelings, but like always he was always the last one in and the last one out. She was leaning against a locker, when she heard the door open. She turned to see who it was and there coming out of the locker room, which was Stiles.
He noticed her and instantly shot her a friendly smile, which she returned. Seeing her made Stiles feel horrible about himself at times. He remembered meeting her the first day of high school, when they were seated next to each other. She was always willing to help him in his work, and be the caring friend that Scott couldn't be at times. They were good friends, along with Scott, and even if they didn't associate with Isaac, they could see being friends with him too. But ever since Scott got bit, that marked the end of their friendship with the young auburn haired teen. Stiles hated it just as much as Scott, but they knew it was necessary, she was too kind hearted and sweet, to be thrown into the world of the supernatural, a world so twisted and dark, was no place for someone so filled with light.
But that didn't mean he would feel hurt, when he would see her emerald eyes darken and face fall when they looked at her from a distance. He knew that pushing her away, and letting in Allison and others into their group hurt, but at least Allison could protect herself. Allison was resided from a young age to be a huntress, a strong and brave young woman, while Brooke was raised to be kind and selfless, she wouldn't never survive in their world. That however never shook the feeling of him wanting to be her friend again.
"Hey Brooke", he said approaching the auburn haired teen.
"Hey Stiles, great practice?" she asked.
"Shouldn't I be asking you, I mean you were there on the bleachers the whole entire time", he said with a smile.
"Doesn't mean that I was watching", she said with a hint of sarcasm.
Stiles was happy that despite everything that happened between them and Brooke, she was still friendly toward him and Scott, something that at times he felt like he didn't deserve, though he knew that Brooke was too kind to push anyone away.
"Am I not interesting enough to watch?" he said with equal amount of sarcasm in his voice.
"Guess not", she said with smirk.
She was a girl that at times was so reserved with people, she would usually be so shy that she would never really talk to anyone else, but with Stiles it was different, she could easily speak to him. He was just a person who could just draw you out of your shell.
"Hey Scott and I were going to hang out, you are welcome to join. And Isaac can come too", he added last.
Brooke really had to think about it. She wasn't a person to turn anyone down, especially since this would be the time to finally restart her friendship with two people who she did miss, but she had to talk to Isaac. They needed to talk about their relationship, see if they can make things work, and this needed to happen soon, because she felt that she might explode with anxiousness.
"I don't think that I can", she said not looking at Stiles in the eyes, "but I can rain check on that hang out", she said hoping that her words wouldn't make him feel bad, like the way that Stiles did when Scott and him, would cancel on Brooke.
Stiles was a bit taken back, he wouldn't have guessed that Brooke would say no, since she usually didn't. But what could he expect, he and Scott did the same to her, but it meant that the bridges between them weren't as stable as he thought. Right now everything was calm; there was no threat of anything attacking Beacon Hills, it felt too calm, like the calm before the storm. But he guessed that maybe things would be better for them not to be friends, because if things were to go bad again, he wouldn't want to hurt her again if they had to push her aside in order to protect her.
"Uh, sure", he said with a smile.
The door opened again, and this time it was Isaac, he looked around and his eyes landed on Brooke and Stiles. He saw the way that Brooke was smiling and so was Stiles, and felt his stomach churn. He was familiar with this feeling, as he felt his chest constrict, and knew that this was none other than jealousy. He's known this feeling for quite some time, ever since Brooke got attention from guys at school. He knew that he shouldn't feel this since it's not like Stiles had any feelings for her, but he couldn't help himself. He could see that Isaac was a person that anyone could talk to; something that he struggles with on a daily basis. Isaac didn't mind what others thought of him, something that Isaac wished he could have too, since he is plagued by other's thoughts of him and his insecurities. He felt that he would never feel comfortable in his own skin, like the way that the Stilinski did. As he continued to see their interaction, he felt worse about himself, because if someone who she hasn't spoken to in a long time was able to speak like they have always been friends, could someone easily take her away from him?
Brooke looked past Stiles's shoulder and saw that Isaac was standing there, with a sulk look on his face and a very noticeable frown.
"Isaac", she called out to him, snapping him out of his thoughts, and she waved him over to the pair.
He walked over to him, and stood next to Brooke. Unconsciously, he stood right next to her and stood straighter, as if to stake his claim. Stiles however noticed it, he saw that Isaac was protective over her, and he could understand. Isaac knew that he hurt Brooke, and Isaac was always there to help. But there was something more, they have yet to look at each other, and as Stiles looked at Brooke, he could see a pink tint on her cheeks. Something was going on between them, and he knew it wasn't his place to know, at least not yet.
"Well, I guess I'll see you later Brooke and you too Isaac, I still have to wait for Scott", he said knowing that he should leave the pair.
"Uh, I think he was on the phone with Allison", Isaac answered.
"Of course he is", he said with a sigh, "well either way see you two later, I'll wait for him in my jeep", he said leaving the two in the hallway.
The awkward silence was back again. Brooke looked up at Isaac, and saw that he still hadn't looked at her, and it was driving her nuts. This was the sort of thing that she wanted to avoid, how can the two be in a relationship, if there would always be some sort of awkwardness looming in the air. She noticed that Isaac was just wearing his loose blue tee and decided to take off his hoodie. The moment she took it off, she instantly felt his soothing scent of the woods and earth, leaving wanting to wear it again.
"Here, thanks for letting me use it", she said handing him back his hoodie.
"Are you sure you don't want to take it, it is cold outside", he said as he took it back and letting his hand touch hers.
"No its fine, besides today is your cemetery shift, last thing I want is for you to go hypothermic because I didn't hand you back your sweater", she said explaining it to him, earning her a chuckle from Isaac.
He took it back and put it on, and his nostrils filled with her scent, lavender and vanilla, but deluded with his. He smoothed it over himself and looked up to thank Brooke, but saw that she wasn't looking at him.
"Isaac, I thought about everything", she said still not looking at him, "about us".
Isaac's icy blue eyes widened, he didn't know how long he had been waiting for her to mention this. He thought that it would take more time for her to come to a decision, or to even think about what they could have. But he guessed that her curiosity of wanting to make things work between them was the main reason for her to make a decision this quickly.
"And what do you think?" he asked with worry laced in his voice.
"I want to… I want to try, I want to try to make this work", she whispered.
His eyes widened in shock, never once did he think that Brooke would want to give him a chance, give them a chance, a chance for them to be something. But part of him felt that maybe the only reason he was even getting this chance was because she was too nice to say no.
"Do you really mean it?" he asked her, and Brooke nodded, "Brooke, what exactly do you feel for me, about this, about us?" he whispered reaching for her hand to see how she would react to this gesture.
She didn't push him away, instead she moved her hand to hold his better, and then began to interlace their fingers, "I feel something, that just makes me want more", she said and looked up at Isaac, "Isaac, I'm not going to lie, I don't know exactly what I feel for you. I don't know if what I feel for you is enough to have a relationship with you. But I want to at least try to figure it out with you. I do feel something for you, and I hope you can give me time to figure it out, but I want to try it hands on" she said never letting her hold on Isaac's hand go.
"Brooke, I don't mind waiting, you are worth it, but we don't have to do anything, I can wait till you're ready to make this work", he admitted.
"But I want to try, but if things aren't going to work out… I don't want to lose you as my best friend, I don't know what I would do without you", she said with a saddened voice.
"Brooke, you won't lose me, if we see that things aren't going to work, we'll stop and go back to being best friends, I mean if that's what you want. We'll take this slow, as slow as we both feel comfortable doing", he said with a blush on his cheeks as he neared Brooke to the point where they were only inches apart.
"Ok", she said as she looked up, "then maybe this can work".
Brooke knew that at this moment she was risking so much. She was risking her friendship with her lifelong best friend; she was risking the person who understood her better than anyone she has ever met, the person who can put her back together when she didn't have the strength or will to do it herself. She was risking so much, but in her opinion if things worked out the way they both thought they would. Then the reward would be worth it, because no one would be better for her than Isaac.
She looked up and saw that he had this smile that made him look like he was day dreaming, most likely of what they could have. And she felt given what just occurred she needed to do something. She leaned up to him and pressed his lips against his. They were just as soft as they were this morning. She felt that it was still too soon to kiss him fully, but this was enough. She felt her lips tingle and burn under his and felt the blood underneath boil, making her want more. Isaac eased into the kiss, kissing her gently, this wasn't his first kiss, but he wished it was. Because in his opinion this kiss was perfect, there was something so innocent and pure about this kiss, it was so gentle that it felt that it would easily break under the slightest pressure, but at the same time the fuel that powered this kiss was ground shaking. This really was the start of something new for them, the start of Brooke and Isaac, the two teens who will slowly fall in love.
They both broke the kiss, but still leaned in to one another, leaning their foreheads against one another, their warm breath mixing together, basking in their own feelings. They both looked into each other's eyes, her emerald green reminding him of the leaves of summer, and his blue eyes, reminding her of the sky. Heaven meeting earth, there was something so right about that kiss that it should have scared Brooke, but instead she welcomed it.
"We should really get going", she whispered to him.
Isaac continued looking into her green eyes, loosing himself in the forest of her eyes, but when she asked again he responded, "yea we should", but didn't move.
"You should really get going; you have a night shift at the cemetery", she said with a smile forming on her lips, as she playfully pushed him.
"Fine, I'll call you later", he said as he readjusted his backpack, "if it doesn't get too late."
"It's fine, but remember, if you get hurt don't hesitate to ask", she said as she remembered that Isaac would usually get hurt at his night shift. At least that's what he would tell her, but knowing of his abuse, she figured that he would most likely never get hurt there, if anything he was safer there than in his own home.
"I will, I promised didn't I?" he said as he held her hand gently.
The two walked like that, both of them having their heart beating at a breakneck speed. They were still so shy about this, but they knew that there was something right about this, something that they would both discover together. A together that they were both looking forward to.
But Isaac knew that he had to find Derek, he just had to. Because now he had Brooke, and he would do anything to protect her, to be the strong, brave person that she derives. Because if Lydia was still missing, that means there was still some sort of danger lurking in the woods. And every passing second that he was still human was a second that Brooke and others could get seriously hurt. And he didn't want that. He would find Derek, and accept the gift, the gift of being a werewolf.
