Kate sprang up from her bed. It wasn't the first time. Since she started to live here and train this past year, she had horrid nightmares. Sometimes Lanie would be there to coax her through and other times she was on her own. It wasn't ever mentioned to Rick because she knew he would freak. Kate wiped her tears and rubbed her face through her hands. She removed her fleece blanket and slipped into the slippers as she put on a thick cardigan. The alarm clock read 3:47am. She made her way out the dorm without disturbing the girls and to the balcony down the hall.
Her mind wandered. These past months have been tough, hard-core training. Kate's trainer, Royce, was encouraging, but she thanked herself that back in New York, she did daily runs. The training was easy at first, but her and Rick were prepping for their first mission now. It went from playing dodge ball to combat fighting to using their powers to their full strengths within a number of weeks. By the time she reached her dorm every day, she was dead asleep until sometime during the night. Her parents and Martha haven't spoken to either of them this past year. The two of them worried about their parents every so often, but it was always interrupted by some sort of training exercise.
The handle of the balcony turned just as Kate was going to enter. She instantly went into a defensive stance. The hallway was dark, which made it harder for Kate to see where everything was. When she saw a shadowy human figure, she launched forward.
"ARGH," a familiar male voice grunted. "What the fuck?"
Kate's eyes widen, "Oh my god. OH MY GOD. I'm so sorry. Rick, are you okay?"
"Kate?"
"Yeah. Hey."
"What are you doing up so late?" He asked with a wince of pain that was shooting between his legs.
"I'm so sorry. Are you okay? You really don't sound okay. I'm so sorry."
"I'm fine. Don't worry. All that training and I complain about this? No way." He chuckled.
Kate giggled, "I couldn't sleep. That's why."
"Oh, You too? Any nightmares?"
"Yeah." She whispered hoping he didn't hear as she helped Rick up as they made their way out into the platform.
"Wait. You've been having nightmares?"
"What? No. No. I just couldn't sleep that's all."
"Kate, don't you dare lie."
"Am not," She stuttered and turned to lean against the railing. Kate looked up into his darken eyes and sighed, "It's nothing, Rick."
"Nothing! It's not just nothing! How-"
Kate cut him off, "See. The reason why I don't tell you about these things is because you worry too much. So much it kind of annoys me."
There was a silence. She gazed back up at him to find him quiet. Kate immediately regrets what she retorted in that harsh tone.
"Rick, that's not what I meant. It's just you've done so much for me and I don't want to give you more to worry. I know you are my best friend and-"
"No, Kate. It's fine. I should go now. Goodnight."
Their eyes locked for a moment. When he broke the gaze to they were sharing to head back to the hallway, she grabbed his wrist and kissed him. It was full of passion. He stared at her blankly but gave in, both wanting more. Her other hand rested in fist against his chest as Rick cupped her face with his free hand. Kate parted her mouth for his tongue to explore, and he returned the favor. A moan escaped from them both. They continued to battle out their anger for each other and all the times they should have locked mouths until they were in need of oxygen. Their lips were no longer moist as their foreheads rested against one another.
"Kate,"
"Hmm." Her eyes still shut from the kiss as she slowly licked her lips then pulled her bottom lip in before fluttering her eyes open.
"Don't do that, it's sexy."
She let out a laugh. "Oh? Is that so?"
"I've been wanting to do that since that night after I kissed you."
"Well, you're not alone. I've wanted it too." Kate blushed and leaned in for another kiss.
They made out for another ten minutes, before the two of them walked hand in hand to Kate's dorm. He kissed her once more, "Okay now," he chuckled between her eagerly hot, quick kisses, "Goodnight."
"Goodnight, Rick." Kate beamed after their last kiss and open the door.

It was 6am and all trainees were awake ready for another long day. The girls were on their way to the boys' dorm before they heard a familiar voice.
"Morning hotties." Javi commented as he yawned.
"JAVIER ESPOSITIO," Lanie spoke as she smacked the side of his head.
"OUCH. What a way to say good morning Lanie." Javi said as he itched his head.
"You'll be thanking me later, boo." Lanie retorted.
The other four just laughed at the couple.
Rick snuck an arm around Kate's waist and gave it a light squeeze. She squealed causing all of them to look. She gave him her famous death glare before sneaking a quick peck after the group turned around, "Good morning."
At the cafeteria, the guys grabbed the girls their breakfast while they found a place to sit.
"Girl, why are you so smiley today?" Lanie asked.
"Yeah I know, what happened?" Jenny asked.
Kate eyes widen while her cheeks turned crimson red, "N-Nothing."
"You really think we'll believe that?" Lanie retorted.
"Come on, Kate. Spill." Jenny rolled her hand.
"Seriously there's nothing to spill."
"Well, guess I'm just going to have to use my skills." Lanie eyed Kate and continued on a conversation with Jenny.
They boys arrived with two trays in each hand. They ate in a comfortable silence before heading out to the training center.
Rick and Kate jogged side by side around the track in the arena. They were sharing a laugh while stealing quick kisses off each other. A ringing bell interrupted them and the two parted ways to head off to their stations. Before the training began, a voice from the speakers above spoke, "Good morning trainees. As you know, all year each of you have worked to your extent and to reward you with all the hard work you all put in, starting from noon, the teleports will be active for trainees to visit their hometowns." The entire training dome cheered. "For the rest of the morning, there will be free time in which you may battle others if you wish. Stay safe and be back at the headquarters before 4am."
"HELL YES. Javi, let's go find the others and we can team battle." Kate smirked. Her mind began to form strategies to fight and taunt Rick.
"Sounds good." Espo followed.

The group snagged battle ring 3 and teamed up in obvious trios, Lanie, Kate and Jenny and Kevin, Javi and Rick.
"No fair," Rick protested, "you girls got a healer."
"Oh. That's your lost." Jenny quirked.
"Well, you ready?" Kate asked.
"YEAH." Everyone replied.
"FIGHT!" Javi hollered.
Javi quickly mimicked Lanie's set of powers. He was only familiar with hers and Ryan's and learning Kate's.
"DAMN YOU JAVI!" Lanie complained as she moved around the ring looking for something useful to shift into. Javi took this time to shape himself into Lanie hoping he could use that towards his advantage.
Meanwhile Kate and Jenny were deflecting Rick's fireballs and Kevin's blinding light with Kate's force field as Jenny tried to boost it without being traumatized by the white streak.
"Jenny!" Kate shouted, "You need to stop the light!"
"Are you sure you can hold up?"
"I'll try!"
"Okay." With that, Jenny took her concentration off the force field, and fought the blinding light blast out with Kevin. She succeeded, but unfortunately Kate's force field didn't hold up for much longer. Kate collapsed onto the battle ring floor. Jenny sent a healing cross across the ring onto Kate so the fireball Rick blasted didn't do her harm. When Rick realized what he had almost did, he immediately bolted to her side. "Oh! KATE!"
"I'm fine genius." Kate croaked as she sat up, coughing and gasping for air.
"I'm sorry. That wasn't supposed to happen. I was only trying to strengthen your force field. You could have told me to stop. I should have known. I'm so-"
"I'm okay. And thank you. It think it worked. I didn't feel much of an impact. I am almost to the point where it will be strong enough to hold without making me collapse. I'm kind of sick of collapsing anyways." She smiled and pecked his lips.
A random object interrupted the moment, "THAT'S WHY YOU WERE ALL SMILEY TODAY."
Kate jumped. "Lanie?!"
Lanie began to form herself again right as Javi walked up right next to her still in the body of Lanie. Lanie gave her mimicked self a life threating glare. "JAVIER ESPOSITO! GET YOUR ASS OUT MY BODY AND UNMIMIC MY POWER! NOW!"
"Sorry madam." He answered sarcastically while turning back into his normal form.
Ryan and Jenny hand in hand walked up from behind as Jenny asked, "Kate, you alright?"
"I'm good. But he's going to get his ass kicked when we fight one on one." Kate gave him a seductive look followed by an eye roll.
"TEASE!"
After a few rounds, they decided to go one on one. Rick and Kate were up first.
"Are you ready," Ryan shouts, "1, 2, 3, Bat-" Before he could even finish the word, Kate threw a force field around Rick.
"Try to get your way out of this Ricky." Kate taunted.
Rick drew both fire and ice together at once, then with force, he broke Kate's force field. "HA, Still not strong enough for me." Rick retorted back with a smirk.
"DAMN IT." Kate scrambled to the other side of the ring, keeping her guard up. This time Rick threw ice shards all around Kate, cornering her. She shot Rick a glance before he was sent flying backwards into the wall. Knowing it was a bit of a powerful throw, she sent another force field to catch the impact.
"You didn't need to do that." Rick declared when he was back on his feet.
"Well, I didn't want you having a concussion. Unlike you, I don't want to hurt my best friend." Kate exaggerated.
"Hmm, how sweet of you." He retorted with a smirk plastered across his face as he began his fireball. He took note of what Kate had just called him, best friend.
An hour pasted and it turns out Rick and Lanie were tied first place for the one on one battles. The group headed back to the cafeteria to grab lunch before heading back to their home towns. Though all of them were going back to New York, they were departing in the obvious pairs. The 3 couples said their goodbyes to each other before Rick and Kate stepped into the glass elevators to be teleported back to Kate's old apartment.

When Rick and Kate arrived in Kate's parents' room, the two of them bolted to Kate's old room. She quickly put her phone on charge.
"Why are you putting your phone on charge?" Rick asked.
"So I can call Maddie. God. I haven't seen her in a year! Do you think she'll even talk to us?"
"I don't know."
"I miss this place. So many memories." Rick mumbled as he pulled Kate in for a hug and kissed her forehead.
She let out a giggle. "There were more in your bedroom."
He looked amused. "SO TRUE!"
Kate's phone turned on and she found Maddie's number, her thumb hovering the call button. "Do you think she'll pick up? Her number could have changed."
"Give it a try, Kate. I'm going to my bedroom real quick."
She inhaled a deep breath and hit the call button. It rung 3 times before someone answered. "Hello? Kate?"
"Maddie!"
"OH MY GOD, BEXS! IS THAT REALLY YOU? WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?"
"Yeah, it's really me," Kate laughed. "And that is a very, very long unbelievable story. Can we meet up like right now?"
"YEAH. YEAH! Where?"
"Here, at my apartment. Rick's here too."
"Oh. Really? GREAT! Kate, I have so much to tell you."
"Yeah, well get your ass here!"
"Alright. I'll see you in 20." With that, Maddie ended the call.
"Looks like she hasn't changed her number." Kate hollered and threw her phone onto the bed.
"I see." Rick chuckled as he climbed back into her bedroom. "So is she coming over or what?"
"Yeah."
Rick smiled at Kate. "What?" Kate asked irritated.
"You are beautiful." He began as he pulled her into his embraced and kissed her.
"Thanks handsome." She whispered within the kiss. It deepen without notice and before they knew it Kate was on her bed with Rick hovering her. The doorbell rang and cause the two of them to spring off each other. Kate straighten her hair and shirt then opened the door.
"BEXS!" Maddie practically hollered and gave Kate a bone crushing hug.
"Hey there Mads! Gosh, I've missed you so goddamn much." Kate greeted with tears flowing. She laughed and wiped them away.
"RICK! Oh my god!" Maddie pulled him into a hug.
"Hey Maddie." Rick smiled.
"So what has happen this past year that caused you two to fall of the face of the earth?" Maddie blinked away her tears.
The two of them went quiet.
"Should I be worry?" Maddie asked.
"No." Rick answered a bit too quickly.
Maddie knitted her brows. "Spit it out. Spill guys."
"Will you believe us if we told you?" Kate asked cautiously.
"What? Why wouldn't I? Wait. What do you mean? Of course I will."
Rick let out a sigh. "Are you ready?"
"Guys, what did you do?" Her face was written in confusion.
"We won't harm you in any way, calm down." Kate reassured her.
"Okay… What is this big secret? You two finally got together?"
Kate went crimson red while Rick chuckled. "That did happen actually. But no, that's not really it."
"Took you two long enough." Maddie rolled her eyes giving Kate a glare. "When did you finally figure out you were actually falling for him?" Kate remained furiously red and silent.
"Maddie. That's not the point…" Rick stuttered.
Maddie laughed, 'Okay, so what is this you want to tell me?"
"More like show you." Rick smirked.
"Wha-"
Rick right hand threw up some frost as his left hand shot the frost with a burning flame. Kate formed a force field around Rick's creation then slowly with her eyes moved the creation towards Maddie.
"Uh. Whoa. Is this some magic trick?" Maddie's eye brows perked. "OH! The beach last year. Is that when you guys found out?"
"Yeah." Rick replied.
"You guys are superheros? I figured it was something along those lines. But I never got to ask to confirm it because you guys just left. But, OH MY GOD. THIS IS AWESOME!" Maddie beamed.
"We went into training last year after that incident…" Kate began to explain.
"No need to justify. This is super cool!"
"But Maddie, please don't mention us to anyone, including your parents. This is serious. We are in danger, and we can't risk anymore exposure of having some ability."
"Then why did you tell me?" Maddie quirked.
"We figured you deserved to know after all this time."
Maddie let out a sigh and then settled an arm on one of their shoulders. "You guys are the best people I've ever met. I can't lose you guys again. You had me worried for an entire year. I was so lost without my brunette." Kate laughed at that remark. "I promise on my grave that your secret is safe with me. As long as you visit me every so often or somehow tell me you guys are alright, okay?" Maddie winked. "I have to go now. I left school and I got to get back before next period. I going to miss you. Love you guys." Maddie hugged the two of them.
"Gosh, you're going to make me a crying baby," Kate replied making Maddie chuckle lightly. "Of course. Love you mads."
"Love you too Mads." Rick smiled.
"Save the world heroes." And with that, Maddie left the two of them.
For the rest of the afternoon the two of them went downtown for a late lunch, went browsing in the shops until dawn, then decided to go ice skating at Rockefeller. The two of them held hands as the glided across the frozen water.
Rick whispered into her ear, "Kate, you know I could have made this in your living room, right?"
"Shut up. I just want to be normal for a couple of hours, okay?" Kate said as she skated ahead then turned back around to kiss him.
"Okay."
They skated till the night hours then left because of their empty stomachs. Rick grabbed Kate's hand and guided her to a Chinese takeout nearby.
She beamed, "Is this a date, Ricky?"
"Oh, Miss Beckett, you are such a tease," he flirted back. "And yes it is. Our first official date, after we buy our food and go back to your apartment that is. Gosh it is already 10pm…"
When they arrived back at Kate's apartment, she pulled him to the fire escape stairs. On the way there, he picked up a couple of blankets to keep warm.
Kate leaned over and gave him kisses in-between the words. "Best. Date. Ever."
Rick laughed, "We haven't even began, Kate."
"It's already perfect."
The two of them were wrapped up in the blankets eating their food and laughing at each other, being themselves, enjoying Each other's company. Every once in a while, they would steal a kiss.
"So this means you'll be my girlfriend, officially?"
Kate smirked, "Maybe."
"Seriously?!"
"I'm kidding. I'm all yours, Ricky." She leaned in for a long, passionate kiss.
With that, the two finished up their late dinner and cuddled in the blankets until it was time to return back to the headquarters.

Meanwhile in Captain Montgomery's Office…
"They are the best I've ever seen." Victoria Gates commented.
"I agree with Victoria." Mike Royce added.
"But do you think they are ready for this?" Montgomery asked.
"Emotionally wise? Kate would be a hell no. It will destroy her if something happened. I don't know if Kate can handle it without support-" Royce retorts.
"She'll have Javi and Kevin, Lanie and Jenny, and Rick." Montgomery reassured the two.
"But physically they are going to be just fine. She's one of strongest we've trained, I don't think it this mission will destroy her." Gates declared.
"This is going to be Kate and Rick's first and quite possibly their last if they mess up, Roy. Are you sure-" Royce began to protest.
"Then it is set. The two of them are going on the hunt set in a week's time if we don't receive anything." Montgomery stated ever so calmly.
