Chapter 11: Adventure is out there!
A/N: Yo everyone! Finally updated, am I right? Well I actually have a decent reason why this is up so late...New story! Yep. I know what you may be thinking 'Two stories at one? He barely updates this one once a month.' And I have a perfect reply to that. I do what I want. The reason it took so long is all the planning and editing I had to do. Poor me, right. Well anyways, enough with the chitchat, on to the show!
P.S. Expect the new story within three days.
It's been about four hours since Harding and I separated from Vivi and her team, so far nothing interesting has happened. It's just been us walking, walking, and more walking.
"Jeez, when will you people evolve and invent the car" I grumble and stifle a groan when I see yet another hill we're going to go over.
My companion looks at me with a raised eyebrow, "You say something" she asks
My eyes widen, shit, that was careless of me,"W-what? I didn't say anything. pshh, girl you crazy" I say nervously.
Her look remains, "Oookaaay" she says and continues walking.
I awkwardly clear my throat, "So uhh, where are we going"
She shrugs,"I don't know"
I nearly trip over myself in surprise, "What do you mean you don't know" I yell.
She stops and looks at me with narrowed eyes, "Well if someone hadn't grabbed my hand, started running, then yell'To Adventure', maybe we would have some sort of destination in mind'
I scoff, "Well, excuuuuse me, princess." I don't feel proud about that, "Well there's got to be something to do. Some wrong to right" I say and, as if the Golden Asshole himself put it there, we see a rift at the bottom of the hill.
Lace groans, "You had to say something"
I look at her, "Oh yeah, cause I just looove fighting demons. What's that doing there anyways" I say sarcastically.
"The explosion at the Conclave caused rifts to appear all over the place, not just near it. They were appearing nonstop until you and Lady Cadash stopped the Breach from growing" she explains as she gets her bow out, "So thanks for that"
I unsheathe my own blade, "Anytime. Now let's get rid of this pimple of the world"
Lace chuckles, "Pimple" she says to herself. I chuckle at this. She's such a cute little person. Wait...cute? Don't you do this thoughts. Before I could delve deeper into the subject of whether I find Lace cute or not(Damn it) four green wisps flew from the rift and planted themselves into the ground. Arms then popped out of the ground and they pulled up their torsos, giving us a good look at our enemies. One tree person, a terror, one cyclops, shade, and 2 green ghosts, wraiths.
"Okay, so here's the plan, I'm gonna take the two melee demons while you try to take care of those wraith assholes. Sound like a plan?"
Lace pulls back her arrow, "Got it" she says and releases the arrow...only for it to strike the terror in the shoulder, "...just ignore that that happened" oh I am so going to not let her live this down, however I just charge into the fray.
Okay let's do this. I duck under a green ball fired from one of the wraiths. Next I sidestep to dodge a swipe from the Terror and backstep to avoid a downward slice from the shade. This continues for a few seconds, them trying to claw at me and me trying not to get mauled. Ok, this has gone on long enough. As the Terror tries to trip me up I jump over his swipe and I dash into his reach, this startles it and before it could do anything I stab into its gut, my blade going through its body causing it's black blood to spurt onto my armor. Gross. I yank my sword out of it and as it falls to its knees I see a shadow behind me and I duck under the strike the shade tried to surprise me with. Bastard! I grab the arrow that Lace put in the Terror and pull it out of it, causing the demon to scream in pain, and I turn around and jab the arrow into the eye of the shade, making it howl and try to pull it out. I turn back to the Terror and I raise my blade and decapitate it, making the Terror to turn into a black puddle. I turn back to the shade to see it on the ground, writhing in pain. I stab it in the gut and put it out of it's misery. I turn to the wraiths and see that they both have arrows in them and are hanging on by a thread-scratch that. They're dead. Or redead. Whatever.
I look back to Lace and give her a thumbs up, "Good job"
She doesn't lower her weapon and she looks a little scared. Huh? I turn to look behind me-OH SHIT. A large hand punches me in the chest and sends me flying to the ground. Oww...that came out of-why is my body hot? I look down
at my body-oh my God I'm on fire! I roll around and quickly put it out before it can completely ruin my armor, or burn me. I sigh as I finally extinguish the flames.
"...Look out" Lace says halfheartedly.
I glare at her, "Gee, thanks" I get up and look at my assailant. It appears to be a blob of molten lava that has arms and two really bright spots that I assume are its eyes.
I turn back to Lace, "Uhh, what is that" I question as I point at it.
She looks at me, "Rage demon, extremely dangerous. Can hurl fire at you and is also blazingly hot to the touch" she reports. Oh, cool.
"Can I still cut it" I ask.
Lace pulls back another arrow, "Yup"
I grin and pick up my sword from the ground, "Well that's all I need to know"I say and charge it. It doesn't waver and slides to meet me. I swing my sword as he swings it's claws. Our weapons clash, so his hands are hard enough to block my sword...good to know. Crap, I can't stay in this lock for too long or my sword will warp, or worse. I break the lock and rear back for another attack, as does he. We clash once again and sparks fly. Damn it. I try again, blocked, and again, blocked, again, blocked, AGAIN, BLOCKED. I yell out in frustration. I duck under its claws. NOW, I dash into its reach, causing me to immediately start sweating, and I slice horizontally causing lava to fly to the ground. Haha, got ya you son of a-it doesn't look fazed at all and proceeds to punch me away once again-BITCH! I quickly put out the flame on my armor and slowly get up. Oh come on. What will it take to put this bastard down. I turn to ask Lace where my goddamn support was when I see a plethora of arrows surrounding the place I just fought. Was it fighting me and dodging Lace's arrows at the same time?
"Lace, I wouldn't turn down a suggestion" I say to her.
"I think I'll get it next time. I got something I've been waiting to try out"
"Will it work"
"I can give you a shaky maybe" she says hesitantly.
I chuckle, "Well its better than nothing. I'll buy you some time, just please let me know the second you're gonna shoot it"
She chuckles too, "I'll try my best"
I give her a thumbs up and then I give the demon the bird. I take a deep breath and charge back into the fray. I try to slice upward but it blocked and spits a small fireball from its mouth that I barely dodged. Well that's new. I try to slice him once again and he just keeps blocking me. Damn this guy! I drive my sword into the ground and then send dirt flying into its eyes. It looks like it did its job and its currently swinging wildly.
"NOW" Lace yells. I dash to the right and look at Harding. She has an arrow in her bow, but it's pulled so far back that I fear the bow might break, "CHILL OUT" she yells and releases the arrow and I swear I saw it break the sound barrier. It reaches the demon in less than a second and drills through it. I mean literally THROUGH it. As in its on the other side of it with a giant hole in it's torso. It cries out in pain and turns into boiling black ichor.
I quickly get to the rift and put my right hand to it. Focus, concentrate, and...close! It follows my command and after a few sputters it condenses in on itself and disappears. I stand there for a second before falling on my ass.
I let out a long breath, "Well that was a bitch and a half" I say, then look back to Lace, "Good job back there, you really saved my ass" I then laugh, until I see the stunned look on her face, "what"
She then points to the place that the rift used to occupy, "You just...closed a rift"
I look at her with a raised eyebrow, "Yeah, I do that. Haven't you heard" I ask her.
She looks at me, "Well, yeah. But, hearing about it and seeing it are completely different things," she then gives me a wide smile, "You really are amazing" she tells me.
I blush and rub the back of my head, "Well, thanks," I then point to her, "You were pretty badass too, I mean a new move AND a one liner, what a badass thing to do"
She blushes this time, "Well I wanted to try that move out, it's called Archer's Lance and it can drill through enemies, even multiple ones if they're in a straight line. As for the one liner, I don't know what came over me, I just felt like saying something, you know what I mean. And since it was a lava monster, Chill out. Haha...though I guess was pretty stupid of me" she says and looks down at her feet. I get up and put my hand on her shoulder, causing her to slightly jump in surprise and look me in the eyes.
"Not even a day ago I said 'Science, bitch' to a Mage as I electrocuted him with a sword that took his lighting attack head on. You said 'Chill out' to a rage demon before you drilled an arrow through it. I think it's safe to say we're both stupid," I then put my hand on her head, "And that's just fine with me"
She looks into my eyes for a second then smiles, "Something tells me things are only going to get weirder as things go on. That...scares me, as I don't know if I'll be able to keep up. But at the same time, it gets me excited. Excited, because it gets me a chance to become stronger and stronger until I can not only keep up, but surpass our enemies. Then I'll become so strong that I'll be able to look you in the eyes as an equal"
I give a confused look, "What? Lace you're already my equal" I reassure her.
She slowly shakes her head and takes my hand off her head and holds it, "No, I'm not. At least not yet, but I promise you that as soon as I feel we are, you'll be the first to know" she then let's go of my hand and looks me in the eyes, "We should get going, boss. Daylight is burning" she says and walks past me. I stand there look at the spot she was. How can I not be her equal, I'm not that important.
Lead them or fall.
Or am I?
Why?
Why am I so important? The mark? Vivi has the same thing, so it's not that? The fact that my soul is currently in a whole other word? The only thing I got out of that was a headache. So why am I so important?
"Come on, we have things to do" Lace yells to me. I look to her, what does she see that I don't?
I sigh deeply, I'll guess I'll never know. No point in moping about it. I jog to catch up to her, "Coming, sorry"
She looks at me worriedly, "Are you alright"
I nod, "Yeah, I'm good"
She looks at me a little longer, "Alright then. We should try and find some clearing where we could set up camp for the night" she says as she scans the area. Yeah, the sun is going to set soon and it'd be too dark to see.
"Good idea, know a place" I ask.
She nods, "If we are where I think we are, then there should be a clearing a few miles southeast of here that should be perfect. We should be able to get there right as the sun sets"
I nod and motion for her to lead, "Lead the way"
We reach the clearing just before dusk and we set a nice little campsite, complete with a nice little fire, which is currently heating our dinner of dried meat, and one tent.
Wait.
One tent?
"Hey, lace why is there only one tent" I ask her before I take a sip from my canteen.
She looks at me with suggestive eye, "I want to feel your body next to me through the night"
This causes me to so a spit take and choke on the water that went down the wrong pipe.
"Wha- I don't- but" I stammer as I type to get some sort of response out. Though her laugh causes me to calm down considerably.
"You should see the look on your face" she says as she clutches her stomach. She laughs for a while and I just sit there with a bright blush on my face.
"Your an ass" I say to her without any actual malice.
She stops laughing and looks to me again, "An ass you wanted to sleep with" she says and busts out laughing once more.
I glare at her, "Do I need to pull rank on you, cause I will"
She stops laughing and gives me a confused look, "Rank" she asks and puts a finger to her chin, "Well if I remember correctly, then you don't actually have a rank" she says smugly, "In fact, if anything I could pull rank over you" she says and points at me.
I gasp over dramatically, "You wouldn't, after all we've been through"
She closes her eyes as she takes a bite of her food, "Don't tempt me" she says through her food. After she swallows she opens her eyes and looks at me, "Seriously though, one of us is going to keep watch while the other sleeps, then after a while wakes the other person for their shift while they go to sleep. It's pretty self explanatory" she explains.
I nod and take a bite out of my warm jerky, I wonder what animal this is?
"Sounds good, so how do we decide who get gets up first" I ask her?
She looks at me, "How about Sword Axe Lance"
I raise my eyebrow in confusion, "Wassat" I ask.
Now she looks at meet confused, "you've never played SAL before"
Shit, this must be common, "Of course I have, I just want to make sure that we're playing the right version"
She looks even more confused, "There are different versions" she asks no one in particular.
I nod, "Well of course, show me what version you play so we will be even"
She looks at me with narrow eyes, then shrugs, "The way I play is sword," she then shapes her hand like she's holding an invisible sword, "Beats Axe," she then does a Karate chop motion, "Axe beats lance" she then points two fingers at me, "And lance beats sword. Simple" she says as if she is talking to a toddler. So it is like paper rock scissors.
I nod, "Ok, on three ok," she nods, "One, two, three"
Lance!
...she chose Axe.
"...best two out of three" I say. She rolls her eyes, but nods nonetheless.
"One, two, three"
Axe!
Damn it.
I raise my hands, "Fine, fine. I'll pull first shift" I say dejectedly.
A couple of pats on my back gets my attention and I turn to Lace,
"It's okay...there, there"
I smile at her, "You know, no one like a bad winner"
She smiles back, "That's just what losers say" she then reaches back to her hair bun and undoes it and her hair reaches her shoulders. She actually looks a lot better like that.
"I like your hair down, it looks good" I say to her.
She looks at her hair, "Really? It kinda gets in the way when I'm fighting so I just keep it up"
I shrug, "makes sense, I should probably get more comfortable too" I say as I start undoing the metal part of my armor.
She raises her eyebrows, "You're not going to take off your pants are you"
I give her a 'Seriously' look, "Yes cause I just love public nudity" I say super sarcastically.
She rolls her eyes, "Well I don't know you that well yet. You could sleep in the nude for all I know" she says.
I chuckle, "Well don't worry, I don't." I say then wait a beat, "Do you"
She blushes immediately and punched my arm, hard this time, "No, asshole"
I laugh a little, "You're going to have to get used to it if we're going to be a team"
She just shakes her head, "That's going to take some time. But I think I'll live"
I give her a thumbs up, "Good to hear, I know I'll have to get used to all this goddamn walking" I say as I rub my foot.
She giggles, "It gets easier"
I sigh, "I'll take your word for it"
Silence then came over us, but it wasn't an awkward silence, just us resting by a fire and looking at the stars. God I love the stars here. Thanks to the lack of city lights the stars could shine as bright as they wanted. Though I don't know any constellations, it's still beautiful to gaze upon.
It stayed like this for a half an hour, at least I think so, until Lace stretches and groans, "I'm gonna hit the hay" she says as she gets up and heads for the tent, "Wake me when you start feeling really tired and we'll switch out"
I give a two finger salute, "Got it" I say. Boy, this is gonna suck.
"Hey, word of advice" Lace says from the tent, "Try to imagine fighting some Darkspawn, that'll keep you up"
Darkspawn, eh?
"Thanks, I'll keep it in mind" I yell to her.
"Goodnight" she yells back.
"Night" I yell.
Now silence.
Greeeeeeeaaaaaaat.
The crackling of the fire dies down as the flames goes out. Well, it's not that cold anyways, so might as well let it die. Now I'm sitting here, looking at the stars. Bored.
I let a deep sigh. What I wouldn't give for my phone. I lay down and start to look at the stars again. Just stargazing. Yaaaayy. I look to the moon and see it hasn't moved an inch. This is really gonna suck.
I have a feeling things are only going to get weirder what did she mean by that? Well I mean obviously there are things and people out there that are stronger than the jabronies we've been facing so far. But are we going to fight them? We probably are aren't we, that's what happens in epic quests, you beat up things that are at least twice as strong as you. I look to the tent that is currently sheltering my travel companion, that scares her, huh. Does it scare me? An image of a seven foot tall wizard wielding lightning like a sword and shooting lasers out of his eyes comes to my mind, I shutter a little. That thing doesn't exist here. I hope. So yeah, it does scare me a little facing off thing and people who have more experience with actual fighting than some guy who did it for a hobby for a few years. Then again, I do get excited when I think about it seriously. To be able to test my skill against those strong warriors in a life or death scenario. Though, the death part I could go without. I sigh at that part. So I killed three people today. Sure, they left me no choice and they would have killed me, but the fact remains that I'm alive and they're not. The demons, I can live with, after all they're monsters without remorse or morals. At least the jabronies I fought had some messed up form of morals. I wonder how many I'll have to kill during my time here. I really don't want an answer to that question. Speaking of, how am I going to get back home?
You will know when the time comes
Yeah, bullshit. I bet he just said that to calm me down. I look around to see if he was around, but of course he's not. I haven't seen a golden finger since I was brought here. And boy, does that suck. I have so many questions I want to ask him. Some involve how two completely different dimension can speak the same language, how many different worlds are there? Infinite? But those don't compare to the question I really want to ask, mainly: WHY THE HELL DOES LACE LOOK EXACTLY LIKE SARAH? And WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED AFTER I BARGED IN LIKE THAT?! I groan, this is hurting my head. I guess it doesn't really matter. I'm here, Lace Looks like Sarah, and the world is fucked up and we're trying to fix it. Sounds good.
I try to stifle a yawn.
Sounds...good.
You know, my eyelids suddenly became very heavy.
Maybe a little power nap won't hurt.
My eyes are nearly closed when I see a shining golden silhouette.
Oh that bastard.
"You have done well so far" it says as my eyes close, "Let us hope it stays that way"
