Z's POV
That interaction with Cameron left me feeling very uncomfortable, "Syd, I really don't like that guy." Syd had been quiet the entire journey back to S.P.D, and when we got back to our room she did nothing but pick up a magazine,
"No offense, but it doesn't really matter if you like him or not, he's Roxy's dad." She finally said, "And anyway, I hardly think Cameron's lining up to be your best friend either." I scowl at her, the guy's dangerous, I'm just looking out for her.
"I'm hungry." I randomly blurt out, "And the food here looks like you could catch a disease just from looking at it, you wanna come in to town and get some snacks?" She has to say yes, this offer is far too tempting, plus I haven't seen that girl smile for days.
"Yeah, sure." She replies, I knew she'd say yes, who could say no to an afternoon with me?
To be honest, there's quite a lot of people in town, but seeing as I just want to get my food….I mean….get me and Syd some food, we shouldn't be that long. I'm seeing food here I've never seen on the market before, nothing like the food me and Jack sto-Smuggled….. "I fancy something caramel." I say,
Syd pulls a face, "Shouldn't we get like….actual food you can cook?"
"Syd, your way of 'cooking' is poking holes in it with a fork and sticking it in the microwave." Syd swats my arm but I know she thought it was funny. I'm determined to go to one stall in particular, the candy store, I need sugar, Sydney needs comfort food, it's a win-win right?
Syd turns to face, not looking where she's going, "Hey Z, there's a stall over there that-" as she turns back around to point to the stall, the both of us are met with two people we didn't expect to see today.
"Fantastic." That stuck up looking woman who's apparently Roxy's adoptive mother, Cindy I think her name is, says, "Come on Roxanne, it's time we got home."
Roxy looks confused as she turns away from the stall, "But we in the middle of grocery shop-"
"Now, Roxanne!"
"Please, don't leave on our account." I say stiffly, "I mean, you were in the middle of grocery shopping, right?" I smile sweetly, and I know Cindy wants to slap that look right off my face, much to my amusement. Poor Roxy actually looks really uncomfortable,
"Umm….How are you?" Syd asks Roxy, the girl looks like she doesn't know what to say,
"I'm good." She says after a while, "Y'know what mom, you're right, we should go." I can see Syd go tense when she heard Roxy calling Cindy 'Mom', God, that must've stung.
"For once, I agree with you, Roxanne." Cindy looks at the young blonde haired girl condescendingly, then back at me and Syd, "Well, as much as I'd love to stay and make pointless small talk, we really should be off. But as they depart, , Roxy turns back to Syd, much to Cindy's dismay
"The green ones taste like shit, by the way." She says, pointing to a packet of green coloured candy, "I'd get the caramel ones if I were you." A brief smile flashes across her face before she walks away,
Sydney is glowing, "I think that's possibly the nicest interaction the two of you have had." I tell her as I put my hand on her shoulder,
"I know." She says, smiling, "Well, you heard my daughter; we should get the caramel ones." And with my sweet tooth, I'm not about to say no. Sydney doesn't stop smiling all the way back to S.P.D, but I can't help but think that maybe Sydney's reading too much into this, she's acting like Roxy said she wants to move in with her or something, I don't want her to get her hopes up, but then again this is the happiest I've seen her for weeks.
"At least she's talking to me." She tells me, her blonde hair fluttering in the wind as we walk into headquarters, "I don't want to lose her before I get the chance to get to know her." She welcomes my embrace with open arms.
"Trust me, once you get that mother-daughter bond, nothing will be able to break it, not even that pompous bitch Cindy." I tell her as I kiss her forehead, "You're her mom, Roxy is putting up a front, I can see it, she wants to build a relationship with you, she just…wants you to make the first move."
"Wow, you're great at giving advice, you know that?" We decided that we didn't want to go back to headquarters just yet so we made the decision to just….sit….by the water fountain just by the main entrance, "When'd you get so wise?"
"Since I know what it's like to love a child."
Sydney face turns shocked, "What?"
It shouldn't have been said, I'd buried it at the back of my mind, I swore never to talk about it, but I have, and it's too late to backtrack, "Three years ago, I had a termination."
"….Z…"
"I got to the clinic." I carry on with teary eyes, "I thought about turning back...but then I thought…..how can I be a mother….I mean, don't get me wrong Jack was supportive and all-oh and before you ask, he wasn't the father, I didn't know the guy who got me pregnant, it was a drunken mistake, but the baby…..I felt it growing inside of me, I was certain I couldn't go through with it, but then I thought…what sort of life will it have with me as a mom? I was a homeless, thieving criminal."
"Jesus, Z." Syd wraps her arms around my neck, "You would've been an amazing mom, because you're kind, brave, and you truly do have a heart of gold."
I'm crying by this point, "You've found your daughter, Syd, don't ever let her go."
"I won't, I love her more than anything in the world." She says as I pull myself together and we head up to our room and curl up with a bunch of junk food and a collection of classic movies.
