(A/N: There is a long authors note at the end. Please read it.)
"You've got to be kidding me. No classes today either?" Hiro grumbled as we traipsed through the hallways of our school. Students milled around, talking and laughing. Unfortunately for us, we were headed to the music room.
"It's supposedly a workday." At workday, I did air quotes with my fingers. "For the students to finish things up."
"So, basically a whole day of study hall. Yay." Her deadpan tone mirrored my mood perfectly. "We're here. Ready?" I nodded. I had mentally prepared myself for this moment, and I'm sure that Hiro had too. There was a click as Hiro turned the handle, and a small creak as she opened one of the double doors. Waves of tropical perfume washed over us, but it wasn't overpowering like last time. Either Tamaki had learned, or someone else was in charge of perfume this time. There was a moment of silence, and then our ears were assaulted by none other than Tamaki having a rather large freak out.
"Kaede! Is what you said true!? I'm so sorry I didn't know! I am a horrible father-" Tamaki genuinely sounded distraught. I sighed, and waited for him to finish.
"Yes. What I said is true. I'm blind. Don't worry about it. You didn't know because I didn't want you to know, and you're not our father anyways."
"How do we know that you aren't faking it?" Hikaru's deeper, slightly rougher voice grumbled with anger. I wasn't offended by his question, although it was probably meant to offend. In fact, I was glad someone had asked it. It would have been a bit disappointing and boring if what I had told them was just accepted without question. I mean, I had pretty much been faking being able to see, so the situation could be reversed. Although, I never said I could see, they just assumed… I rummaged around in my bad for one of my braille textbooks. That should prove it. Once I had it in my hand, I held it out for inspection. After a moment, someone took it from me.
"What are all those dots, Takashi?"
"I don't know, Mitskuni."
"Ah, I believe that's braille. It's a writing system that allows blind people to read." Of course Kyoya would know. It is him, and his family is in the medical business after all.
"Oh really?" The book was shoved back into my hands. "Then what does it say?" In order to answer the question posed by Hikaru, I ran my fingers across the spine if the book, the arrangement of raised bumps being translated into letters, then words.
"Honors Biology, fifth edition. By Mayumi Takagi." As soon as I finished, I was tackled, almost falling backward from the small mass that had attached itself to me.
"Wow! That was really cool! I didn't know you could read dots Kaede!" What? What is going on? This reaction is certainly unexpected. I stood there in stunned silence, icy cold shock running through my veins.
"Um…It has to be a specific arrangement of dots though. If it's just random, it doesn't mean anything." Pure surprise filtered through my voice.
"What you said matches the textbook I have." Haruhi's voice was a comfort, low, warm, and comforting, like the crackling of a fire burning. I absolutely loved her voice.
"Read some more! Read some more!" Honey's infectious excitement was blocked by the enormous wall of incredulousness that was surrounding me.
"Um…." I had no time to react before the bombardment continued.
"What else can you do? Can you teach me? Do you have, like, super smelling senses and stuff? What about hearing? OH! How do things taste?" Honey's delivery was rapid fire, and honestly quite unsettling. It must have showed, at least a bit because Takashi had Honey stop, thankfully.
"Mitsukuni." Just his name, and Honey stopped. That's pretty amazing. Their relationship is really good, what makes it that way?
"This is certainly an interesting development." I smiled to myself, amused and relieved. Good, Kyoya doesn't seem to be bothered. Not that he would be, ! He probably noticed something was off.
"Oh! Imagine what having a blind person will do for the club! I can see it now, the-helpless type, the one that needs to be taken care of." At Tamaki's statement, although I knew he did not mean anything rude or malicious, lightning flashes of anger seared through my consciousness.
"No." Hiro and my words sliced through Tamaki's statement, and I continued on. "That is not an option. Why do you think I wanted to keep it under wraps in the first place? It was to keep that exact thing, or variations of that thing, from happening. The only reason we told you is so you didn't find out by accident, and because it is something that you might've needed to know eventually. So, rather than just dropping the bomb in that situation, we figured to tell you now, so you knew. I don't want anyone else to know for reasons that aren't your business. "
"You made it our business by bringing it up." I can tell Hikaru is trying for a mean joke or something, but I am not in the mood.
"It is not the business of any of you. You aren't our friends, and we aren't yours. We are only here to pay of a debt, and then we will be gone." My tone is matter-of-fact, businesslike. I mean, Haruhi and Honey are really the only ones that talk to us. It's probably just to be polite, it's not like they are generally interested in what we have to say.
"Why would anyone want to be your friend?" Hikaru is predictably the first one to speak up. Kaoru stays silent. I wonder what he's thinking? And everyone else for that matter.
"Exactly. Glad you understand." Hiro and I went over to our table, waiting for the club to open, and avoiding further discussion.
"I think that went well." Hiro states mildly. "They seem to be in a mild state of shock, well, except for Kyoya and Mori-sensei. They seem normal. It could have been monumentally worse." Since it was a study day, the host club was open pretty much all day. Some new people requested us, but like Haruhi, we still were nowhere near as popular as the others. After a time when business had been slow, we were pleasantly surprised when Mitsuru came in.
"Hi guys!" Her eager, melodious tone was quite nice to hear. There was a pause before she continued. "I would like to thank you again for the party." I could just imagine her smile, gleeful, but also demure and elegant. There was another pause. "You know…something feels different. It's like there's something amiss today, but I'm not sure what."
"Oh?" Hiro's tone is bemused, and I can picture the "I-don't-know-what-you're-talking-about face" she's making, even though she knows exactly what's going on. "Well, what would you think is amiss?"
"Oh, I guess it just seems a lot more tense than usual." I turned my face in Hiro's direction out of habit.
"Hmm. Well, you'd be right I guess. There was somewhat of an incident this morning." Hiro remarked, followed by a clinking noise that signaled she had begun to eat something.
"Ah. Well, far be it from me to force things, but I do have some advice. Whatever happened to make things this way, it should be addressed. Talk about it instead of avoiding it."
"Hmm." My voice was quiet, withdrawn. "Yeah, we will." I crack a smile. "It would be a pain to deal with the repercussions if we mess up."
A/N: This is an key chapter. It may not seem like something important happens, but something very important happens, other than their reactions to the reveal, which were really hard to write. I think you were expecting something hilarious, and that will come, but what Hiro decided to do was a serious thing, and I wanted to treat it as such. I also wanted their reactions to be realistic and in character, they were really hard to write, and I still have to reveal their reactions more! Don't worry, the reactions will be revealed more soon. The next chapter is important as well.
Notice how carefully distant Kaede and Hiro treat everyone. No one is genuinely close to them, except each other.
I guess it's more subtle with Mitsuru, but not once have they really been themselves with her. (I mean, they always are themselves, but their behavior is altered when around others, so other don't know them at all.) Sorry for the long Authors note, but I felt it necessary to explain some things, and point things out in case they were missed.
