Chapter 11
Kaito's back hit the ground hard, knocking the wind out of him as he scrambled against the tiles. He sensed the man's shadow encompass him, yelping as a hand gripped his neck and pushed his face into the floor. Fingers pressed into his thighs, pushing his legs apart as his hands were pinned behind his back. The man slammed into him, the teen screaming at the new and intense agony. He felt warm liquid trailing down his legs, aware it was his own blood. "N-no," he coughed out between his howls and choking sobs. "I don't… you can't…"
"Can't what?" he heard the man sneer. "Rape you? You can't stop me. You're pathetic. Helpless. Honestly anyone could just grab you and take you. You're so easy." The thief's breath hitched, closing his eyes and wishing this would end. Pathetic. Weak. Helpless. Why won't it end? You can't do anything. He whimpered, sensing the man shifting him. A low, carnal moan escaped the thief. He heard the man snicker above him as he increased his pace.
"You enjoy this? You filthy slut."
"No…" he whined, drool dripping down his chin and mixing with his tears to form a puddle beneath his cheek. He clenched his fists. I don't want this.
You deserve it.
A loud, obnoxious beeping threw him out of his nightmare, his eyes blinking in shock up at his ceiling as he drew in panicked, ragged breaths. He pulled himself up, wiping the tears from his eyes as his stomach rolled uneasily. He gripped his body, attempting to quell his shaking as he bit his lip. He'd thought he could handle this – the nightmares – but the insults reverberated in his mind, deepening his nausea. He stumbled to the sink, throwing up nothing but saliva and bile before sitting down and curling up.
He didn't understand. That wasn't what happened, those weren't the words that had been said to him… at least from what he remembered. Why were these bad dreams different from reality? They weren't true, and yet they still managed to shake him up. He pulled out his phone, scrolling through his contacts until his fingers were hovering above Tantei-kun's number. He shook his head, slipping the phone back into his sleeve. He could handle this. He wasn't weak. Besides, he thought, I have school now.
He slipped back into his room, silencing the piercing alarm, throwing on his uniform, and covering up the hickeys. He was relieved to find the marks were fading day by day, and his pain had lessened substantially. He glowered at the cast and sighed. There was no use hiding it, and it's not like he'd never gotten injured on a heist before. He frowned, perfecting his excuse for Aoko, then grabbed his school bag and dashed out of his house.
Kaito smiled as he saw Aoko enter their classroom, a wide grin pasted on his face as he bounded up to her. "Hey, hey sign my cast!" he laughed, holding a marker up for her. "I've already asked everyone else." He watched her eyes widen only to narrow moments later, about to retort what he'd done this time when a pompous Brit's voice interrupted them.
"Not everyone," the blond commented with a roll of his eyes. "Can I presume you've injured yourself, yet again, on another heist?" Kaito glared.
"How many times do I have to tell you I'm not KID?" he grumbled. "I was testing out a new magic trick." He paused before smirking cheekily at the detective. "Don't worry, you can sign my cast too. I'm not prejudice unlike some people," he sneered. He was happy when Aoko jumped to his defense, literally jumping in front of him and throwing her arms out.
"Kaito's not KID!" she shouted in Hakuba's ear so that he had to take a step back. Aoko's fiery temperament to the rescue. She turned to smile apologetically at Kaito. "I'll sign your cast, Kaito." He grinned as she took the marker from him, sending a smug smirk in Hakuba's direction. The detective sighed as he passed by the two.
"Honestly Aoko-kun, for him to have you fooled as well." Aoko ignored him, scribbling on her best friend's cast.
"Idiot, what were you doing practicing magic when you're sick?" She placed her hands on her hips, leaning forward and glaring at him. He laughed, a look of embarrassment crossing his face.
"I was feeling better and wanted to work on my newest trick!" He grinned. She huffed, smacking him on the head. He glanced up at her with mock hurt yet genuine confusion. "Ow! Aoko!"
"Don't be so reckless," she chided. "Just because Aoko dislikes the sight of your face doesn't mean she wants it covered in bandages." She turned her head up at him and went to her seat as he gaped at her. Aoko… He glanced at the cast, a silly grin slipping on his face and tears coming to his eyes. Get well soon. And stop getting hurt Bakaito! Relief flooded him and he giggled, wiping the tears before anyone could notice. Of course. He'd be fine soon enough. He didn't need to drag anyone into this.
Kaito laid in the grass outside the high school, daydreaming about new tricks and future heists and his aspirations to become a famous magician like his father. Aoko plopped down beside him, glaring at him, and he looked up in annoyance. "What? Is there something on my face?"
"Where's your bento, Bakaito!" she glowered. "Don't tell me you forgot it." She stared down at him with vexation. He offered her a shaky laugh.
"Ahh you got me," he simpered. If forgetting it meant not having made one in the first place. He froze as she shoved a white ball in his face.
"Here," she muttered, turning her head away from him. "Aoko will share hers just this time." He paused and then smiled at her, accepting the offered rice ball. He froze as she shoved her face way too close to his. "But don't expect this everyday! Jeez, I know your mom is out of town, but really!"
"Ahh sorry, sorry." He laughed, stealing a slice of beef as he relaxed, enjoying the warmth of the sun. It was comforting to just lay here and think about nothing in particular. He felt a chill come over him as Aoko shifted beside him, hearing an unwanted voice.
"Kuroba-kun." He cracked an eye open, swallowing as he looked up at Akako. He scowled, rolling onto his stomach and pretending to sleep. She'd left him alone all morning, but he supposed it was too much to hope she'd pretend nothing had happened. "Nakamori-san, may I borrow Kuroba-kun for a moment?"
"Huh? Sure." He sensed Aoko turn toward him as he received a whack on the head. "Kaito stop acting so childish!" He sat up, grumbling to himself.
"You're one to talk Ahoko!" he shouted, sticking his tongue out at her and dashing away before she could hit him with her mop. He frowned as he saw Akako follow him, clutching her body and pity shining in her ruby eyes. "What is it? You know if you wanted to sign my cast you just had to ask…"
"Kaito," she addressed, startling him with her familiarity. "I know what happened." Kaito swallowed, feeling his blood run cold.
"I don't know what you're-"
"Stop," she commanded, raising a hand to silence him. "Just stop. Why do you keep denying me? I know who you are, and I know what was done to you… down to the last second." She glanced up at him, a lump forming in her throat as she saw the tears streaming down his face. She started forward. "Kaito…!"
"You know? Know what?" he hissed, anger clear in his voice. "Are you here to tell me that I should have listened to you? That you were right?"
"No, Kaito…" she started to reply.
"How was I supposed to know?! You always say things like that to me! How was I supposed to know things would be different?! Why…" She felt guilt eat at her as he choked on a sob. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I…" she stuttered as realization hit her. "I didn't know…" She felt his furious gaze cut through her.
"That's right. You didn't. So don't talk to me about what you know," he spat the words at her, turning away.
"Kaito…" He clenched his fists, waiting until she left before wiping his eyes. He couldn't go back in there and face Aoko. Not when he felt he would break down at any second. He swallowed and then took off running. He didn't know where he was going, he just felt he had to get away, to escape. He didn't understand. Why was this happening? What was wrong with him? One moment he was content, happy, the next there was an overwhelming sense of despair, helplessness threatening to consume him. There was no coping, no managing this. Either he was sad or he wasn't.
He ducked into an alleyway, sliding against the rough cement and curling up. He pulled out the business card that nurse had given him, flipping it over. Then, in a fit of rage, he tore it to shreds. He pulled out his phone, throwing it against the wall, satisfied when he heard it crack and shatter against the ground. What were they going to do?! What could they do when he couldn't do anything? He didn't care if Tantei-kun wanted him to rely on him, he didn't want to rely on his rival. Ignoring this was the only chance he had at things going back to the way they were. If he changed the rules of the game, then he'd never be the same. He had to cling to that normalcy.
Please review as always guys! I'm not kidding when I say you're my motivation to continue this project :3
