Adagio sat across from Sunset as she sipped her milkshake. She was listening attentively to an anecdote that the fiery-haired girl was telling. Or...at least she was pretending to be attentive. She tried to listen to her friend, but she couldn't help but pay more attention to the girl herself. She found her brilliant blue eyes mesmerizing, and she found it hard to look away. She was almost jealous of their color and brightness. Adagio was glad that she was enraptured by Sunset's eyes, because as she stared directly at them, it looked like she was actually paying attention to the girl's story. And, to appear more convincing, she'd let out the occasional 'mhm' followed by a nod, or an 'oh really?' whenever the girl paused. After a good minute, Adagio heard a snap, and she blinked rapidly, going out of her trance. She released the straw from her mouth and sat straight up, looking at Sunset, who was holding her fingers in the snapping position. Then Adagio noticed her questioning stare.
"Uh, Adagio? Are you okay? I finished, and you just kept staring at me." Adagio blinked again before letting out a nervous chuckle, rubbing the back of her neck as she felt her face slightly heat up.
"Oh, uh...was I? Heheh...well, I guess your story was just so captivating that I...I...uh..."
"This is a bullshit excuse, isn't it?" Sunset asked suddenly, a hint of humor and amusement in her eyes. Adagio blinked before sighing and slumping in her seat.
"...Yeah..." She muttered. "...you got me..." Sunset chuckled.
"It's okay. I know I'm kinda a boring person to talk to. Nothing really interesting ever comes out of my mouth." She said with an apologetic smile. Adagio blinked again and shook her head.
"Oh, no Sunset! That's not true. Your plenty interesting. I'm just not the best audience..." Adagio said humorously, causing Sunset to chuckle again.
"Well, that's alright. I guess we both have our own faults, eh?" Adagio nodded.
"Seems s-" As Adagio spoke, her eyes wandered past Sunset suddenly at a small hint of movement, and she almost choked at what she saw, and she could feel anger rising in her, along with tinges of embarrassment. There, right outside the window, was Aria and Sonata. Those two idiots had followed her! When they noticed that they had been spotted, the two ducked back out of sight hurriedly in an unlikely hope that she hadn't seen them. It took literally everything in her power to not shoot up from the table and 'confront' the two. A low, inaudible growl escaped her throat, and all the while, Sunset was watching her worriedly.
"Uh, Adagio? Are...are you alright?" She asked, turning around in her seat to maybe spot was Adagio was so disgruntled about. Seeing nothing, she turned back around. "Uh...Adagio?" This seemingly got her attention as her eyes widened, and she looked back at Sunset.
"Huh? Oh! Yes, I'm just...fine." She said, her tone trailing off to a more angry one. Sunset raised an eyebrow, clearly not convinced. Adagio waved it away and went to change the subject.
"So, Sunny..." She began in an brighter tone. "...how has apartment life been? You been able to support yourself well?" Sunset seemed to brighten a bit at this.
"Oh, uh...yes, actually. Struggling a bit, but you know...who doesn't struggle a bit in the beginning?" Adagio nodded sagely, trying to ignore Aria and Sonata's evident presence. She'd have a little 'talk' with them later.
"Indeed. I'm just glad you aren't living in that trash heap of a building anymore." Sunset smirked amusedly.
"Oh, the one you locked me in the basement of for a good four days with little food, light, and air?" She asked. Adagio gained an uncomfortable, apologetic look, looking down at the table.
"Y-yeah..." She said softly. Sunset's eyes widened, and she reached out across the table, grabbing one of Adagio's hands in her own.
"Hey, Adagio..." She said softly. "...it was just a joke. I already forgave you for all of that. It's all water under the bridge." She said in an attempt to make Adagio feel better. Adagio looked up, and Sunset could swear she saw her eyes getting glossy. "Adagio...what's wrong? You know you can tell me anything, right?" Adagio sighed, a small smile appearing on her face.
"I know, Sunset. It's just that...I just...used to be so awful. If I'd known just how amazing it felt to have people like you just for being you instead of the feign feeling that you get from forcing them to like you...I never would've done any of those things..." Her smile disappeared. "But once I started, I couldn't stop. I just became so..."
"...power-hungry..." Sunset finished with a sigh. Adagio looked up.
"...yeah. How did you-"
"I know the feeling, Adagio. Believe me, I know the feeling..." Adagio cocked an eyebrow in slight confusion.
"What do y-" Sunset held up a hand, signaling for her to stop.
"Look, that can be a story for another time. The sun's almost up, so I think it's time we go for now." Adagio hesitated, taking a look out the window before nodding sadly. Sunset giggled.
"You do that every time. You act like we'll never meet again." Adagio looked at her, a small smile appearing on her lips.
"Heh, s-sorry, I just...really enjoy our time together..." Adagio said, trying not to sound too weird or come off as awkward. Sunset chuckled.
"Yeah, me too. Sooo...tomorrow morning?" Adagio's smile widened, internally sighing with relief.
"Y-yeah. Tomorrow." She said with a nod.
"Okay, sweet." Sunset said, standing up from her chair. Adagio did the same. Then, with a curt hug, the two said their goodbyes, and Sunset left. Then, quicker than humanly possible, Adagio's mood switched. She scowled as she looked towards the window where she'd seen the two idiots. She sighed and muttered something incoherent as she went to exit the little shop.
Time to have a 'talk' with those two.
