Sorry for the long wait on this chapter, Ive been very busy with both parents going into hospital at the same time...Come on! How often does that happen!
As always please inform me if there are any grammar or spelling mistakes.
And ive nearly decided on who Alison should end up with, Alec or Seth. I want to hear your thoughts on that so please leave a review or PM with who you think Alison should end up with and why.
Chapter 11
Alison just stared at him. "You scare me sometimes, you know that?" She said moving to clean her plate in the sink. Carlisle gave a light hearted chuckle before going back to his paper. "By the way, who owns the scrambler in the shed?"
Carlisle put away the paper he was reading and looked at her with a baffled look on his face, his eyebrows knitted together and he tilted his head a little. Alison sighed; she still used the British terminology and it had sometimes, like now, caused some words to be mistranslated and confusion often ensued.
"The red dirt bike in the garage" She said slightly slowly while intentionally putting on an American accent for him, mainly to make fun of him and partly just for fun.
Recognition past across his face as the figurative penny dropped, "Oh, that's Bella's, she had Jacob rebuild it when she was still human."
"Does it still run?" Alison asked curious. She and her friends back home had sometimes raced the neighbors for fun on a particular rainy day when the ground was wet and muddy. While they didn't own a bike themselves, the neighbors were sometimes kind enough to let them have a turn on theirs. Alison didn't know any cool tricks, but she was pretty confident to not fall off while driving.
"I don't know, why, thinking of using it?" Carlisle smirked.
Alison shy-ed out of the room, she could practically feel the stare of Carlisle's eyes the back of her skull. She walked into the living room, every one was still there. Alison didn't want to ask to use the bike with so many people there. Unfortunately she didn't add Jasper to the equation.
"Whats wrong, Alison" Jasper said with out looking at her.
'Damn annoying empath' she thought feeling embarrassed and obligated to ask now.
Alison shuffled lightly from foot to foot. She bent her arm at the elbow behind her back to grab her corresponding arm.
"Um, I was just wondering...about the red scrambler in the shed...May I use it." Alison asked looking at the ground
Bella was taken aback; she hadn't even thought about the Bike that she had gotten made for when Edward left.
"Sure, I can't even remember the last time I used it." She said
Edward spoke up from behind her "I think it was before you were changed into a vampire, love"
Alison internally cringed, 'Idol for eighteen years, damn I don't think it's going to start. The insides may have been corroded'
"Maybe Jacob can take a quick look at it. It might need a tune up after all these years." Edward said, his thoughts taking the same route as Alison's even without the mind reading.
Jacob, who was in a distant corner with Renesmee looked up at hearing his name, "Sure I don't mind. Might bring back some memories too." He said with a smile.
Alison had no idea that he was a mechanic. Hmm, you learn something new every day... though in Alison's case leaning something new in this life wasn't always a good thing. They walked into the garage passed all the really expensive cars to the one little outcast of a vehicle. The small little bike was so unimpressive looking that it stood out like a red coat in a sea of white. It would be perfect for Alison.
It took about an hour for Jacob to be completely finished looking over the bike. He used the equipment that was abundant in the fancy garage. In fact the place was so well stocked that Alison was sure they would never need to visit an actual mechanic, ever. Jacob said they were lucky, the bike as not as bad as it could have been.
"I mean the insides could have been completely corroded, all the nuts and bolts rusted over, the battery might be okay, and the engine seems in pretty okay condition. You might have to worry about flooding the engine when starting it, but that is easily fixed." He went on and on...and on about the bike, with out any prompt he went on to talk about how he built it from scrap that was so rusted there was barely any shell left.
"So you really built this?" Alison asked while Jake was changing the oil.
He looked at Alison with a mock anger face. "Yeah, you doubt my skills?"
"No, I didn't say that." Alison said quickly, getting defensive. "It's kinda impressive though."
"Don't tell him that. He'll get an even bigger head than he already has." Edward's voice said from the door. They both turned to him; he was holding a full set of professional racing gear under his arms.
"Whats that for?" Alison asked, even though she could easily guess what they were for.
Edward, with a smile she noted, walked down from the doorway toward them. "There for you." He said holding them out toward Alison.
"No." She said flatly
"Yes." Edward replied in the same tone
She sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose 'Just thirty seconds of insane courage' she thought takeing a deep breath.
"No. That is professional racing gear. You would never need that on a 100-150cc scrambler. Even professional's don't wear that kind of gear. " She said.
"She's right" Jacob said,
"What? You're defending her?" Edward asked astounded
"Yeah, I wouldn't let my worse enemy wear that on a Dirt Bike. I know she's a little more breakable than us, but that's way too much." Jacob said.
Edward would see a lost cause. "At least wear the Helmet" he reasoned
"Fine. If it's a Scrambler helmet. Not a raceing helmet" Her thirty seconds weren't up yet.
"We don't have one of those." He replied getting exasperated and annoyed.
"Then I'll ride to a store and buy one." Alison was happy to be winning but didn't let up her poker face just yet.
Edward sighed with and angry 'Ahh' and it was his turn to pinch the bridge of his nose. "I swear you inherited Bella's stubbornness" He was caving "Fine!" he angrily said throwing his arms in the air.
Alison let out a breath of fear she was holding. She was terrified that he was going to get very angry and yell at her. She turned to the bike, which was now fully ready to ride. She braced herself on the handle bars and put a foot on the kick starter. She jumped slightly putting all of her weight on it.
It growled like a caged lion but didn't start. Alison tried again, with similar results. She wasn't heavy enough nor strong enough to deliver enough power to start it.
Emmett appeared in the door way an evil grin on his face. "Need a hand, tiny"
"No!" Alison growled as she tried again, weary of flooding the engine.
Mercifully after the third try it started, she turned to Emmett with going 'HA!' pointing a finger at him.
She revved the bike, a little satisfied with the sound; she swung her leg over and pushed the bike forward takeing it off the stand. The bike dropped a little as it took its weight and Alison's on the suspension.
"Be careful and go slow until you get a helmet, please" Edward pleaded to Alison looking like he was going to yank her off the death machine.
"I've ridden one of these many times before, and I am not the Red Bull X Fighters." She said. Emmett had given her directions to the nearest supply shop where she could get a helmet, and Alison was off.
She took off quickly, bringing the front wheel off the ground for a few meters before hitting the gravel driveway and rideing down the winding path to the main road.
Edward looked horrified; he took a few steps forward with the intension of chasing Alison and ripping her off that bike. Bella placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Don't worry, Edward. Im sure she'll be fine." She said even though she herself looked very weary.
"You know" Jacob said laughing "She probably wouldn't have done that if you hadn't been so overprotective. The look on you're your face is priceless.
She had easily made it to the main road and followed the winding open road to the town. Her hair was whipping in the wind behind her as she reached speed and with the speed came deafness. After a few minutes Alison came to her destination. She leaned into the turn and slowed the bike down. As she stopped and turned off the engine, she pulled the bike onto the main stand and took the keys out of the ignition before walking into the shop.
It was fairly large, filled with rows of equipment and stock. There was everything from magazines, to fancy equipment, to machine parts. Alison walked along the carpeted aisles to where the helmets were. There were lots of incredibly nice looking helmets, but most were for racing bikes not recreational. Alison glanced through them until one called out to her.
It was a metallic forest green with a black sun/dirt visor that jutted out over the eye space. It had little designs on the top to make it appear like there was different dipping levels, like a stairs on the top...Actually now that she thought about it, it looked a little like 'Master Chief's' helmet from Halo. Without the visor of course. Alison took the helmet and was tapped on the shoulder. She jumped and clutched the helmet closer.
A store worker had come over to her to offer his help, and was almost as surprised as Alison at her startling reaction. "Um, can I help you Miss." He asked. He was a tall blond, middle aged with blue eyes and wearing one of those vests that all store workers in America seems to wear. The name on the tag red, Jamie.
"Y-Yes actually, I wanted to get this." Alison timidly said. "Can I try it on?" She asked permission...That should show just how broken she was without her friends or Jasper around, without them her confidence fell through the floor.
Jamie looked at her confusedly, but out of professional courtesy he kept most of it off his face. "Sure." He said as he helped her get it on. The helmet was a pretty nice fit, tight enough to be secure without squishing her face like a pug's. She got the guy to knock the side of it to test it. She could here the sound but couldn't feel anything.
"It's a nice model. Many dirt racers use it. You might want to invest in a pair of goggles if you are using the roads here. With all the rain and humidity all you get is mud, and its not fun when you get hit in the face while traveling at 100 km." he went on to explain all features, which Alison could care less about.
Alison got a pair of classic clear goggles to go with the helmet. She went up to the front desk and paid for the equipment, getting even more strange stares for paying in hundred dollar bills.
After getting her equipment, happy that Edward couldn't complain anymore, she hopped back on her bike and went in a random direction. She had absolutely no care where she was headed; she just wanted to kill time until she had no choice but to head back to the Cullen household.
Alison could no longer feel the full extent of the wind, nor hear much of anything with the helmet. She could feel a slight breeze comeing from the vents in the front to regulate the heat and keep the goggles from fogging up. But she was happy for the goggles at one point when she turned off the main road onto a little dirt road full of potholes and mini hills.
As soon as Alison had hit the road mud was flung onto her face and she nearly fell off from swerving in shock. Her arms locked in place and she brought her head to her shoulder to protect her face. She stopped the bike and moved the goggles to the 'mouth' of the helmet. When she got past the shock Alison had cleaned the mud off the goggles and got a good look at where she was.
Alison could smell the ocean and she was sure that if the helmet was off that she would he able to hear it too. Currently she was on the little dirt road and also was a cliff road (how could she miss that!) and she could see the sea from a little 'pull off' just ahead. If she followed the road then she would be taken straight too it.
'That actually sounds like a good idea,' Alison thought. It was still early autumn and the cold hadn't set in yet, though the rain had started becoming more frequent.
Having decided Alison kick started the bike again and started driving (at a slower pace this time) to the beach. It didn't take very long to get there, about five minutes over all, before she had parked the bike and set it on the main stand. Taking the helmet with her and stuffing the keys in her pocket Alison began trudging across the loose sand. Her converse her sinking slightly in the sand and she found herself having to compensate more to keep her balance. Alison prided herself on having 'the balance of a cat'.
After a short walk she came upon a huge log of driftwood. The strange thing was it was white, eerily so. She was use to seeing black 'bog' wood in various shapes from being petrified in the peat back home. She wondered what had bleached it to this colour...The salt maybe?
Deciding that she could always ask someone Alison sat herself on the wood, stretched her legs across the rest of the log and closed her eyes. It was peaceful here. Alison didn't think she deserved that peace, she was a failure. How could life be this cruel? She was happy (ish) back home; at least there were two reasons to continue her repetitive life. Here, she was out of her element, plus there was the mind reading thing and within the first three weeks she was almost attacked by werewolves.
As she went through all the information in her head Alison could hear the crunching sound of footsteps on the sand. She opened open her eyes and saw that there were a dozen or so dark tanned boys heading toward her. It was the guys from the other week... Sam's group or pack or whatever.
"Hay, we thought we heard Jacobs bike, but we didn't expect you on Quileute land." Sam said walking right up to her.
Even thought there was a smile on his face and his posture was friendly, Alison still shot up to a standing position. She really needed to learn where that damn treaty line was. She hunched her shoulders and kept her eyes to the ground going into submission mode. Avoid eye contact and appear smaller.
"Whats wrong?" Sam asked.
Alison tilted her head up but still avoided eye contact "Nothing. Im sorry im on your land, I still don't know where the treaty line is." She was still a little afraid of them, mainly because Paul tried to eat her when they first met.
"No its okay, you are welcome here if you like. Like Nessie, we are not worried that you will hurt anyone here." Sam said.
He was clearly the 'Alpha' Alison didn't need to be told that to see it. He spoke first and often for others, but she didn't think he was bad, very full of himself and had to be right every time he spoke, but that always comes with power over others. He seemed self righteous. She wondered how often he used his 'Im the leader' power over the others.
Sam turned back to the others "We're takeing her back to Emily's place" He said, well ordered would be better comparison.
"What about the bike?" Alison asked
One of the others offered to take it. It was Quil, but wasn't he in Jacobs pack? There were more than the standard number of werewolves in this group. Instead of Sam, Jared, Paul, Collin and Brady, it seemed that Quill and Embry were with them today.
'I didn't think Packs could mingle' Alison thought, maybe she was reading too much into things. She handed the keys to Quil and started to follow Sam to her doom... Now she was just being dramatic, but she still wasn't looking forward to being with them.
