Chapter Eleven

A Month Later

His body shook in the afterglow of a hard climax, his third today already but he still felt like he needed more. He wrapped his arms around Shannon's waist as she started to draw aimless patterns on his back and stared up at him.

'We'd better get showered and dressed, your dad will be back with Caitlin soon and I need to get dinner ready,' he pouted as soon as she mentioned leaving their bed. 'That cute little pout won't work with me Joshua Grant so quit it,' she smirked before pressing a kiss against his thick red lips and sliding out from beneath him.

'I guess you're right, dad will be worn out when he gets back, Caitlin runs rings around him,' he smiled.

'And Phil loves every minute of it,' Shannon got up from the bed and made her way into the bathroom as he sat up in bed.

Phil had been spending most of his time with his granddaughter ever since he'd got back. He'd tried to talk to him about Jake but every time his father had quickly changed the subject. He had a feeling that he was feeling guilty, that he blamed Jake's problems on himself. He'd never seen his father look so defeated before and it scared him.

Sure he hadn't been there much when they were growing up but that was because he was working his ass off most of the time. Nobody was to blame for Jake's addiction other than Jake himself, his counselling sessions had hammered that point home to him now and he just wished that he could somehow make his father understand that too.

Deciding to skip the shower he managed to drag himself out of bed and pulled on some pants and a t shirt. He'd kept Shannon in bed all day despite knowing that she had to study for an upcoming test so he thought it was only fair that he make dinner whilst she caught up on her revision.

'I'll make dinner tonight, you stay up here and do what you need to do, I'll call you when it's ready,' he shouted into their bathroom before heading downstairs and into the kitchen.

He decided to make just a simple salad with some leftover chicken from yesterday's meal seeing as it was an unusually warm day. He also wanted to make sure that his dad was eating something healthy for a change.

He was halfway through cutting up some onions when he heard the front door open and Caitlin calling out.

'Mom! Dad! Come see what grandpa bought me!'

He set down the knife on the kitchen counter and wiped his hands on a towel before walking down the hallway where Caitlin was pulling out some stuff from a large bag. Shannon was halfway down the stairs when Caitlin pulled a leather jacket out of the bag followed by a box. Caitlin started to tear open the box to reveal a bright pink motorcycle helmet.

'I can go riding on Grandpa's Harley now!' Caitlin jumped up and down excitedly as Josh immediately looked at Shannon who he knew was going to completely lose it.

'Caitlin and I want you to go to your room please,' Shannon had now folded her arms and was tapping her foot, a sure sign that she was about to erupt.

'Why?' Caitlin snapped back right away.

'Because you still have homework that you need to finish and I want to talk to your granddad in private young lady,' Shannon had now reached the bottom step just as Phil walked through the front door.

'I KNEW YOU'D BE LIKE THIS!' Caitlin threw down her jacket and helmet and pushed passed her mother who ignored her daughter's diva like strop and instead focused her attention on Phil.

'We need to talk, NOW!' Phil immediately looked to his eldest son for support as Shannon stormed past him into the lounge. All Josh could do was shrug his shoulders, he knew better than to argue with his fiancé when she was like this. And his dad had fucked up big time. He knew what Shannon's feelings were about Caitlin riding on the Harley and he should have known that doing this was going to get him into deep shit.

Josh watched as his dad rolled his eyes and followed Shannon into the lounge. He in turn followed his dad and walked into the lounge to see Shannon standing by the fireplace with her hands on her hips.

'Look Shannon…'

'Don't 'Look Shannon' me Phil! God damn it you know what my feelings are on this! How many fucking times have I told you that I do not want Caitlin getting on that bike with you until she's older?'

'Jesus Shannon it's not a big deal! I'll go slow…..'

'You won't go anywhere at all Phil cos you are NOT taking her on that damn bike! I mean it!' Shannon shouted at Phil, she was enraged that he'd done this behind her back and now she would have to play the bad guy again.

'Come on Josh fucking speak up for me on this! You were riding with me when you were fucking eight and nothing ever happened to you! Tell her!' Josh first looked at his dad before looking at Shannon.

'Well nothing ever happened to me…'

'Oh so now you're gonna take his side on this?' Shannon snapped as Josh tried to think of a way to try and calm the situation down.

'Look how about we all meet halfway on this? What if he takes her off road for now?'

Josh was expecting to face another eruption from Shannon but she remained strangely silent. Then he could see all the colour quickly drain from her face leaving her as pale as a ghost. 'Shannon?'

He pushed past his father and tried to reach her before she fell to the floor but he got there too late. Luckily her head just missed the fireplace as she collapsed onto the carpet.

'CALL AN AMBULANCE!' Panic took over as he saw his fiancé lying motionless on the ground. His first urge was to hold her in his arms but then he realised that the best thing he could do was to put her in the recovery position.

As he was doing this Phil quickly ran back into the room holding his cell to his ear. 'Josh is she breathing?'

Josh could feel her breathe against his hand as he settled her into the recovery position and he nodded frantically before yelling out a 'Yes' to his dad. He continued to kneel down next to her on the floor and watched her face. After another 30 seconds or so relief spread through him when he saw her eyes begin to flicker before they opened properly.

'What happened?' She spoke in a whisper after a few seconds, Josh was still a blur to her and she had no clue what had gone on. She vaguely remembered arguing with Phil then everything had suddenly gone black for some reason and she didn't know why.

'You passed out honey, an ambulance is on its way,' Josh lightly ran the tips of his fingers across her cheek which was beginning to fill with colour once again but she still felt a little cold to him.

'No ambulance,' she shook her head and tried to force herself to sit up but failed at her attempt as Josh settled her back down once again.

'Stay there, I want you to get checked over, you still look terrible,' Josh took one of her hands in his just as he heard heavy footsteps coming down the stairs. He looked towards the doorway in time to see Caitlin making her entrance into the room, judging by the angry look on her face she obviously hadn't heard all the commotion and was coming down to continue the argument with her mom. Her demeanour changed immediately as soon as she saw her mother on the ground.

'Oh my God what's happened?' Caitlin ran over to Shannon and kneeled down beside her, taking her free hand in hers.

'Don't worry, I'm okay,' Shannon gripped her daughter's hand as tight as she could and tried her best to reassure her even though she still felt terrible and really had no idea what was going on or why this had happened.

She'd been feeling strange for days, her appetite had gone, she was tired all the time, she'd been vomiting. She should really have gone to see a doctor before this had happened but with College and everything that was happening at home she hadn't found any spare time to get away.

'I'm so sorry mom, I shouldn't have yelled at you….' Caitlin started to cry and all Shannon wanted to do was to sit up and hug her but she didn't have the strength to move.

'This isn't your fault honey, I haven't been feeling well for a few days. I should have got myself checked out before this happened,' Josh immediately felt guilty when he heard Shannon say this. He'd been relying on her for comfort and support just as Phil was relying on Caitlin to get him through the difficult patch they were all facing whilst Jake was in rehab. He should have noticed that Shannon hadn't been feeling right but he hadn't because he'd been too busy thinking about his own needs and not concentrating on hers.

'They're here!' He snapped out of his own thoughts when he heard his dad yell out and rush towards the front door. A couple of minutes past before the Paramedics made their way inside. Once they were there Josh stood up and moved Caitlin to stand with him so that they had room to examine Shannon.

A few minutes passed by as they checked her over and asked her numerous questions about what had happened and how she was feeling now. One of the medics then came to him and told him that they were going to be taking her into the hospital to get checked out as precaution. They didn't think that there was anything too serious going on but rather than taking any chances they wanted to get her checked out just in case.

'Okay honey I'm gonna go with your mom in the ambulance and you and grandpa can follow in the car okay?' Caitlin nodded but remained focused on her mother as Josh explained to her what was going to happen. He wished that he could say or do something to make his child feel better but he knew that he couldn't, he just hoped that Shannon would be okay.

A Couple of Hours Later

'I feel absolutely fine now, I think we should just leave because I'm wasting their time by being here,' Shannon had been saying the same thing for the past hour as they waited in a cubicle for the results of blood and urine tests that the doctors had ordered.

'And like I keep telling you we're not leaving until the doc tells us what the results of the tests were so just relax and stop trying to persuade me to take you home because we're not going anywhere,' he replied causing Shannon to frown.

She thought it was sweet that he was so concerned about her but she felt pretty guilty about taking up a bed that someone with a more serious issue could be using right now. After panicking that there was something seriously wrong she was now sure that that wasn't the case. She hadn't eaten much in the past few days, anything she had eaten she'd thrown up a couple of hours later so the chances were she'd collapsed because her blood sugar had crashed. There were lots of bugs going around in college, coupled with the stress of it being exam time and everything that was going on with Jake it had led to this. She was going to make sure she took better care of herself from now on so this wouldn't happen again.

'I hope Caitlin's not still blaming herself for this and I hope your dad realises that I haven't forgotten about what we were arguing about before I collapsed,' now she'd had time to think about it the memories of Caitlin producing the leather jacket and motorcycle helmet had come flooding back to her and she was just as annoyed as she had been before.

She was probably being far too over protective but there was no way in hell that she was going to let her twelve year old go out riding on the back of a fucking Harley. She knew that Phil was experienced and she had no doubt that he would do everything he could to keep Caitlin safe but he couldn't do anything about the other idiots out there on the road. If she allowed Caitlin to go out on the bike and something happened to her she would never forgive herself and Phil would never forgive himself either.

'Give it a day or two and I'll talk to him about it. There's plenty of stuff they can do together which doesn't involve the bike, I'll suggest he lets her help him with his bird feeders, I'm sure he'll love making one of those bad boys in bright pink,' Josh joked as Shannon smiled back at him.

Before she could respond the curtains to her cubicle opened and the doctor she'd seen a couple of hours ago was standing in front of her holding a clipboard in his hands. He quickly closed the curtains behind him and moved to stand alongside her as his eyes scanned the paper in front of him.

'Okay Miss Andrews I am very pleased to tell you that you are absolutely fine and congratulations are in order,' Shannon immediately looked at Josh who was still focused on the doctor. 'Your pregnancy test came back positive so the first thing you need to do on Monday is to make an appointment with your gynaecologist. Every other test came back perfectly normal so I am more than happy to send you home but on the understanding that you start taking better care of yourself, not just for you but for your baby too. If you have any problems over the weekend then come back to us right away. Do you have any questions?'

Shannon stared at Josh in complete disbelief as the doctors words spun around in her head. Just like Caitlin this pregnancy had not been planned and she had no idea how this had happened. She was on the pill, she'd thought that there was no way that she could get pregnant whilst being on the contraceptive pill, she had never heard of anyone getting pregnant whilst taking it so how had this happened to her?

'I think we're fine doc, just a little shocked,' Josh laughed nervously whilst gripping Shannon's hand, he had no idea what to say or do for the best.

They'd talked about having more children but after Shannon had completed her studies. She was taking the pill so the thought of her getting pregnant had never entered his head.

'Thanks doc, I'll make sure I take care of her,' snapping himself out of his thoughts he rose from his chair to thank the doctor and shake his hand before he left them alone again. He sat back down in the chair next to Shannon's bed and held her hand in his once again as she stared straight ahead.

'How do you feel about this?' Shannon gathered the courage to look at him and fell into the brown eyes that she knew so well.

'Confused, scared, happy….Lots of things,' she smiled a little as Josh held her hand even tighter. 'How about you? Are you mad at me?'

'Mad at you? Why would I be mad at you?' He replied as he moved closer to her. Tears began to roll down her cheeks as he got up from his chair and sat with her on the bed. 'I'm not mad, I'm excited more than anything. I missed being there from day one with Caitlin but this time….This time I'd be here from the beginning.'

Shannon buried her head against Josh's chest and could feel his heart racing. Of course he'd be excited, he missed out on everything with Caitlin when she was growing up, with this baby he would have the chance to see everything that he missed out on before with his eldest child.

It wasn't exactly perfect timing considering she was still going through college and everything with Jake was still up in the air but that didn't matter, they'd make it work somehow. Knowing that Josh wasn't angry or upset with her just made her feel the same excitement, this time things would be so different. She wouldn't be hidden away and she'd be surrounded by love and caring, she'd have someone there for her at every step.

'I'd better go find dad and Caitlin to tell them the good news,' Josh whispered into Shannon's hair after holding her for a while.

'Don't tell them anything Josh, not yet,' Shannon looked up at him as he got off the bed. 'Let's wait until we know how far along I am before we say anything to anyone else.'

Josh couldn't really understand why she wanted to keep this a secret from them but he wasn't going to argue with her after the day she'd had. All he wanted to do was get her home and tuck her into bed so she could rest. He planted a kiss on her forehead before disappearing into the main waiting room to find his daughter sleeping with her head resting on his dad's shoulder.

'Any news?' Phil spoke quietly as his son approached them, judging by the smile on his face he already knew that Shannon was absolutely fine.

'She's been discharged, got a little stomach bug so I'm under strict orders to take care of her for the next few days,' Josh couldn't wipe the smile off his face even when mentioning Shannon's supposed condition. Nothing would take the smile off his face for the next few days.

'What's that goofy grin for? Is there something you're not telling me?' Phil knew his son was lying to him, he'd always been able to tell when his eldest was lying. The tips of his ears would always turn bright red and right now they were the colour of ripe tomatoes. As gently as possible he removed his granddaughter's head from his shoulder and put her head to rest against the wall as he got up from his seat and motioned for Josh to follow him to a quiet corner. 'Okay, cut the bullshit cos I know you're lying to me. What's really going on?'

Josh shifted his feet and looked down at the ground, he'd never been any good at lying to his dad and this time wasn't proving an exception. He'd promised Shannon that he wouldn't say anything but he couldn't lie to his dad, not about this anyway.

'Okay you cannot say anything at all to Caitlin and you CANNOT let Shannon know that I have said anything to you about this because I promised her to keep quiet until we see her gynaecologist,' Phil's eyes widened at the mention of 'gynaecologist'. Suddenly the goofy grin made perfect sense, it should have done before but the fatigue seemed to have slowed his brain down in recent weeks.

'I'm gonna be a grandpa again?' Josh nodded and smiled broadly at his father whose face broke out into a huge grin, he hadn't seen his dad smile like that in a long time and it was nice to see him happy for a change.

Without saying anything father and son hugged, not something they did much of seeing as they were manly men but the gesture helped both of them a great deal. After how rough things had been Josh was now hoping the baby would bring a new start and a new beginning to his family and little did he know but his dad was thinking the exact same thing.
