And we kiss for so long, my lungs begin to burn. This is by far the most enthralling and magical moment in my life. Sure, I've kissed other girls before, but unlike Tris, they were lacking the energy she has. With Tris everything felt right, it felt good.
In short, I never wanted it to stop.
Eric POV
I see them on the grass. Tris and Four. My blood curdles with rage. As they lean in towards each other, I feel sick. I am not sure why. I convince myself it is because he gets to be happy, while I have lost the only thing that can make me happy. After Mia, I barricaded myself in. I shut everyone out and became a true Dauntless soldier.
I turn away, too sick to watch.
Zip Lining
Tris POV
We have the next day off, and I can't wait to spend it with Four. I wake up early in the morning, at dawn, and dress myself in black before sneaking out, careful not to wake the others up. I didn't feel like being with my friends today. Last night was too rough, and to be with the same people who were there when Edward was stabbed was uncomfortable. Blood keeps on flashing before my eyes every time I look at Edward's empty bed. I shudder and hurry out. When I reach his apartment, I hesitate before knocking.
What if I wake him up? I wouldn't want to be rude, and wake him up from his sleep. He could be dreaming and- You're overthinking Tris.
I can't stand outside his door for too long, I already feel suspicious look directed my way. Nobody knows about Four and I. Not even Christina, Will and Al, because I haven't bothered to tell them. I'm afraid they will stop seeing me as their friend if they know that I have feeling for Four.
I stand for a few minutes debating whether I should go or knock. I shuffle quite a bit outside his door, always careful not to be seen. Until I hear the lock slide and the door open softly. A head pops out from inside, Four is grinning down at me before pulling me inside with him.
"What's so funny?" I ask him, feeling myself crack a smile.
"You shuffle loudly." Was all he said before kissing me on my forehead. I shiver slightly.
His hair is ruffled and damp, and a towel is wrapped around his hip. I gulp. His lean and muscular body stands out more than anything. I have to force my eyes away from his body, to his eyes.
"I have a meeting today." He says, his eyes turn a darker shade, "Will you be alright on your own?"
My heart drops but I try to conceal it. "Yes," I say, "of course."
"I'm sorry." He says, "I wish I could be with you today." And I can see he means it.
I smile. "Don't worry about it. I need to catch up on my training anyway."
"Hey," He smiles, "Come here." He reaches his hand out and pulls me against him.
Just as I look up at him, he looks at down at me. Our lips touch for a fraction of a second, a brush of lips. But that's all it takes before our lips meet again. This time his mouth comes down hard, knocking us back towards the wall. But I don't care. I am too lost in the sensation of his mouth against mine, his hand on my waist and the other on the wall behind me. He pulls me against him and my back arches, giving him deeper access to my mouth. He makes a low sound in his throat as I drape my arms around his neck. I smile against his lips and run my fingers through his hair. Our mouthes clash and pull and dominate for so long until my lungs begin to burn and I pull away, heaving for air.
He is looking at me panting loudly, his hair is ruffled and I can't help but smile. Four's eyes are shining and energetic. His irises like bursts of lightning.
Suddenly there is a knock at the door. Our eyes immediately find each other. An unspoken understanding; he can't see us together. I dive for the bed, crawling under it. I just fit under the bed with my small body just as Four opens the door.
"Are you ready?" A voice asks, and I hear a clap. Probably a clap on the back.
"Zeke." I hear Four's surprised voice.
"Who else?" Zeke laughs, "Why do look so...so alive? You know it's kinda weird to see you like this."
A slight pause before Four answers. "A dream." He replies, and there is something in his voice, "A good dream you interrupted." I hear a laugh before the door closes behind him.
Eric POV
I walk inside the Dauntless born dormitory and flick the lights on.
"Everybody up!" I yell and watch the Dauntless born initiates haul themselves up with a dazed and groggy look.
"Anyone who is up for zip lining; meet me outside in 10 minutes." I announce before walking out. This is not only a voluntary trip, but it is a test to see who is really dauntless enough to go zip lining. I turn the corner and walk outside. I am greeted by the fresh wind- and Tris. The wind whips through her hair, and she is looking somewhat bewildered. My heart skips a beat and I force myself to stand tall and cold.
"Eric!" She yelps, ripped out of her unusual daze. "I-I was just heading back to my dorm."
She looks a bit uneasy and strangely unraveled.
"What are you doing today?" I ask.
"Uh. Prob-" She starts before I cut her off.
"Come zip lining with the dauntless born initiates.." I interrupt abruptly and the offer throws me off.
"It's a Dauntless ritual." I quickly add. I spoke without thinking again while talking to her. Everytime I am with her, she somehow manages to dig some part of the old me up again. And I am not sure I like it. Although I am not sure. Nothing is ever sure when I am with Tris.
"Or are you meeting up with Four?" I say, and the venom in my voice surprises me. She looks at me with stern eyes.
"Why do you want me to go?" She finally replies, her voice filled with suspicion.
Before I can answer, three of the dauntless born initiates come running towards us. Zeke's energetic, little and top-of-the-class brother, his two friends, Lynn and Marlene arrive earlier than everyone else. As usual.
"Hey. Tris right?" Uriah greets, "Are you going zip lining with us?" He's smiling friendly at Tris. The polite greeting throws Tris off.
"Uh- yeah." She says with slightly widened eyes. Before she realises what she's agreed to, someone behind him cuts in.
"I know who you are." Shauna, my old fellow initiate, appears behind Uriah. "You're the stiff. Four told me about you."
"Oh? What did he say?" Tris' cheeks redden, but she does not look embarrassed. She looks contained. As if she is trying to contain herself from pouring out her feelings. I suddenly feel very irritated about the turn of this conversation, so I walk away towards the train tracks as more and more initiates crowd around them.
"Alright enough chit chat! The train is coming!" I yell as I feel the train tracks begin to vibrate and the familiar sound of an engine draw near. The wind picks up as the initiates break into a run and hurl themselves with ease up into the compartments of the train. I go in last, making sure out of the corner of my eye, that Tris has boarded.
Once we are up on the roof, I can see the fear and paleness in their eyes. Everyone knows this is the Dauntless ritual, and it's no ritual without me. I participate every year along with Shauna and usually Zeke. But he canceled today along with a few others because of some meeting with the Dauntless leaders. I wonder why Shauna didn't go. I asked for the day off, since I already know what the meeting is about. I was the one who requested it, of course.
I hear gasps and suppressed groans as the initiates begin to line up behind me. It somehow never ceases to amuse me, how the initiates are so scared of a little zip lining. Danger and adventure has somehow always made my blood curdle with excitement.
My heart is pounding with anticipation, as I ready the saddle. I go first to secure the safety of the others when they go down. I gulp. But it is not out of fear or worry, it is out of exhilaration. The wind is strong up here on the roof, and the view is breathtakingly pretty. The sun is stretching its last colours of the day out across the horizon. I buckle myself up and grin at the other initiates before I walk backwards towards the each of the roof, not even caring to look back. I give them a cruel smirk before I let myself fall backwards. I fall down. Plunging towards the earth until I am abruptly pulled upwards by the security rope attached to my saddle. I smile genuinely and close my eyes before I turn around and soar through the city. I laugh and open my eyes wide, taking in everything. This is like an escape from everything else, where I don't have to think about anything or anyone. The city stretches before me, skyscrapers and trees whooshing past me in a blur. I see the end coming up and I prepare myself for landing.
The ride ends too soon for my liking. I land on my feet steadily before I take the saddle off. Tall dilapidated buildings surround me. I turn around to get ready for the next jumper, but instead a person stands in front of me.
Arms at the side, wobbly legs but the same black hair. The same hauntingly beautiful black eyes that only if you came close enough, would turn the colour of brown. Her clothes are ripped and dirty, and she looks like she is going to fall any second.
"Mia..." I whisper and my heart clenches. It hurts so much I can't breathe. She looks at me, her eyes are wide. She begins to take a step forward but her legs fail her. She is falling, but I am faster. In two quick strides I am there, and I catch her.
Her hands closes around my wrist weakly. Her eyes flutter shut, exposing the length of her eyelashes.
"Eric..." she breathes.
