Chapter 11: Karaoke Night
"Are you sure about this?" Birdy asked, "Perhaps we should stay home?"
"It'll be fun," Kat assured him. "The cadets do it every Friday. Everyone is going. Even Doggie. Please, Birdy, I want us to get to know each other in a non-work-related environment. You might enjoy it."
Birdy hesitated. Kat gave him what he'd been referring to as the "sad eyes" until he finally gave in. "Oh, alright. I'll go, but don't expect me to get up on stage. I don't sing."
So they left SPD's earth base and headed downtown. Sound Wave was an popular bar and grill that catered to a different theme each night of the week. The inside of the restaurant consisted of an immense semicircular room with semicircular booths and a stage. Microphones, a jukebox and an army of instruments took up most of the space allowing small groups and solo vocalists just enough room to perform the songs.
Birdy saw Doggie and Isenia who'd found a babysitter for Sam and the pup, B-squad, Boom, Piggy, what remained of his own A-squad and countless others. Jack and his nice girlfriend Alley spotted he and Kat the moment they'd walked in and waved them over.
"Hey Kat," Jack smiled, "Supreme Commander B, I'm glad you could join us."
"Have a seat," Alley added, scooting closer to Jack to make room for Kat and Birdy. "Bridge and Z are almost ready to go."
"A duet?" Birdy mumbled, "Lovely."
Kat elbowed him playfully in the side while a waiter brought them drinks. Long island ice teas and a shot of tequila. Meanwhile Bridge and Z were up on stage singing as though they didn't have a care in the world.
Both: Who ha! Who ha!
Na na nanana nanananananaaa!
Z: Have you ever been in love?
He's my best friend best of all best friends

Bridge: I'm going to a party, and it's gonna be wild

Boom laughed so hard he spewed his drink all over the table he was sharing with Ramses, Sky, Syd and Azriel. They didn't seem to mind as they were all laughing as well. Even Sky, who was always serious, could not help but smile while he handed Boom a napkin.
"You're up DC," Jack shouted.
"You callin' me out?" Cruger barked humorously.
"You know it!" Jack shot back. "Get up there and show us what 'cha got hound dog!"
"Oh, this is going to be good," Birdy said, motioning the waiter over and pointing to his empty glass. "May I get another one of these please?"
"Me too," Kat smiled, handing the waiter her empty glass.
Meanwhile, Doggie made his way up onto the stage. "This one is for everyone who took a stand against Emperor Grumn and his troobians and to my beautiful wife Isenia for whom I would do anything. Never give up-"
"-never surrender!" the crowd shouted simultaneously.
I'm an angel with a shotgun, shotgun, shotgun
An angel with a shotgun, shotgun, shotgun
Get out your guns, battle's begun
Are you a saint or a sinner?
If loves a fight then I shall die
With my heart on a trigger
They say before you start a war
You better know what you're fighting for
Well baby, you are all that I adore
If love is what you need, a soldier I will be
I'm an angel with a shotgun fighting 'til the wars won
I don't care if heaven won't take me back
I'll throw away my faith, babe, just to keep you safe
Don't you know you're everything I have?
And I wanna live, not just survive tonight
Sometimes to win, you've got to sin
Don't mean I'm not a believer
And major Tom will sing along
Yeah, they still say I'm a dreamer
They say before you start a war
You better know what you're fighting for
Well baby, you are all that I adore
If love is what you need, a soldier I will be
I'm an angel with a shotgun fighting 'til the wars won
I don't care if heaven won't take me back
I'll throw away my faith, babe, just to keep you safe
Don't you know you're everything I have?
And I wanna live, not just survive tonight
Oh, oh, whoa, whoa, oh, whoa
Oh, oh, whoa, whoa, oh, whoa
Oh, oh, whoa, whoa, oh, whoa
Oh, oh, whoa, whoa, oh, whoa
I'm an angel with a shotgun fighting 'til the wars won
I don't care if heaven won't take me back
I'm an angel with a shotgun fighting 'til the wars won
I don't care if heaven won't take me back
I'll throw away my faith, babe, just to keep you safe
Don't you know you're everything I have?
And I want to live, not just survive tonight
And I'm gonna hide, hide, hide my wings tonight
They say before you start a war
You better know what you're fighting for
Well baby, you are all that I adore
If love is what you need, a soldier I will be
"Not bad Anubis," Birdy mused, "Not bad at all."
Everyone else must've agreed since they'd given the Sirian commander a standing ovation.
"Our turn girls!" Syd yipped, getting up from the table. Isenia, Sophie, Z, Kat, Alley and Phoebe followed her toward the stage while Sky and Jack ordered everyone in the restaurant a round of tequila.
"You and me Birdy! Ready?" Doggie and Birdy each held a shot glass and a thin slice of lemon. "One ... two... three!" They each downed the shot in one gulp and bit into the lemon.
"Ha! You sucked first!" Doggie said, pointing an accusing finger at their supreme commander.
"I did not!" Birdy protested loudly, laughing at nothing in particular as he slammed his fist down a bit too hard on the table, causing some of the liquor to slosh out of their cups and onto the table where it seeped into the old ivory cloth. "I demand a rematch!"
"Bring it!" Cruger grinned, enjoying his superior's company for the first time in his life.
Meanwhile the ladies were all on stage singing one of their favorite songs.
Hey there, sugar baby, saw you twice at the pop show
You take just like glitter mixed with rock and roll
I like you a lot, lot, think you're really hot, hot
Know you think you're special when we dance real crazy
Glamophonic, electronic, d-d-disco baby
I like you a lot, lot, all we want is hot, hot
Boys, boys, boys, we like boys in cars
Boys, boys, boys, buy us drinks in bars
Boys, boys, boys with hairspray and denim
And boys, boys, boys, we love them, we love them
Baby is a bad boy with some retro sneakers
Let's go see The Killers and make out in the bleachers
I like you a lot, lot, think you're really hot, hot
Let's go to the party heard our buddy's the DJ
Don't forget my lipstick I left it in your ashtray
I like you a lot, lot, all we want is hot, hot
Boys, boys, boys, we like boys in cars
Boys, boys, boys, buy us drinks in bars
Boys, boys, boys with hairspray and denim
And boys, boys, boys, we love them, we love them
Boys, boys, boys, we like boys in cars
Boys, boys, boys, buy us drinks in bars
Boys, boys, boys with hairspray and denim
And boys, boys, boys, we love them, we love them
I'm not loose, I like to party
Let's get lost in your Ferrari
Not psychotic or dramatic
I like boys and that is that
Love it when you call me legs
In the morning buy me eggs
Watch your heart when we're together
Boys like you love me for ever
Boys, boys, boys, we like boys in cars
Boys, boys, boys, buy us drinks in bars
Boys, boys, boys with hairspray and denim
And boys, boys, boys, we love them, we love them
Boys, boys, boys, we like boys in cars
Boys, boys, boys, buy us drinks in bars
Boys, boys, boys with hairspray and denim
And boys, boys, boys, we love them, we love them
Boys, boys, boys, we like boys in cars
Boys, boys, boys, buy us drinks in bars
Boys, boys, boys with hairspray and denim
And boys, boys, boys, we love them, we love them
"I love you girls!" Boom praised, "Karaoke night is the best!"
"That it is, Boom, that it is."
"Hey," Boom realized, "You got my name right!" He turned to his other friends. "The supreme commander remembered my name!"
"Hey Commander B!"
Birdy took a drink. "Yes, Bridge?"
"How come you haven't sung yet?"
"Yeah," Syd said in a slightly whiny voice. "We wanna hear you sing!"
Birdy shook his head. "I couldn't possibly..."
"I got up on stage," Doggie remarked, "It's only fair."
"Yeah," Phoebe agreed.
"Come on Supreme Commander," Azriel urged.
"You can do it," Isenia said in an almost motherly tone.
"Come on Commander Birdy," Z persisted.
"I wouldn't mind hearing you sing," Ramses added.
"Me too," Sky murmured.
"Come on Fowler," Kat purred, leaning into him. "Do it for me?"
"Oh, alright. One song," He lifted a forefinger to emphasize the sheer adamancy of his next word. "One."
Birdy scooted out of the booth and made his way up onto the immense stage where he quickly whispered a request into the leader of the house band's ear. The amphibian like alien nodded and motioned to his fellow band members while Birdy adjusted the mike. "This song goes out to a very special young lady."
You can dance-every dance with the guy
Who gives you the eye,let him hold you tight
You can smile-every smile for the man
Who held your hand neath the pale moon light
But don't forget who's takin' you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
So darlin' save the last dance for me
Oh I know that the music's fine
Like sparklin' wine, go and have your fun
Laugh and sing, but while we're apart
Don't give your heart to anyone
But don't forget who's takin' you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
So darlin' save the last dance for me
Baby don't you know I love you so
Can't you feel it when we touch
I will never, never let you go
I love you oh so much
You can dance, go and carry on
Till the night is gone
And it's time to go
If he asks if you're all alone
Can he walk you home, you must tell him no
'Cause don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
Save the last dance for me
Oh I know that the music's fine
Like sparklin' wine, go and have your fun
Laugh and sing, but while we're apart
Don't give your heart to anyone
And don't forget who's takin' you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
So darling, save the last dance for me
So don't forget who's taking you home
Or in whose arms you're gonna be
So darling, Save the last dance for me
Oh baby won't you save the last dance for me
Oh baby won't you promise that you'll save,
The last dance for me
Save the last dance, the very last dance for me.
"That...is what I call entertainment! Come on everybody give the guy a round of applause!" Jack exclaimed.
Birdy was pleasantly surprised by the standing ovation he received. Kat waited for him to reclaim his seat before she wrapped her arms around him and kissed him on the cheek.
"And you said you didn't know how to sing," she teased.
"I said I don't sing," Birdy corrected her, "not that I didn't know how."
"Awesome," Jack declared, "Totally awesome. You rock Commander B!"
"He sure does," Kat smiled, nuzzling Birdy's neck before resting her head on his shoulder.
Birdy wrapped his arms around Kat. They spent the next two hours with their friends listening to their songs and stories.
Happiness came so much easier for Birdy when Kat was beside him. He could actually relax and be himself. It was all very strange, hanging out with actual friends. Birdy liked this. He really liked it.
...
I know, this chapter was pretty corny, but I just couldn't help it. Karaoke is just so fun, especially when you're with your friends. I wanted to give Birdy a song that proves he's more of a lover than a fighter, especially since the show already proved Doggie was a much better warrior. Feedback is always welcome. Hope you enjoy 😊
