Chapter 11
Sherlock paced slightly. She just wanted to get going already. They'd already been hanging around here far longer than she'd wanted to. She leant against a wall and closed her eyes. Noises faded and she focused.
Bobby's mother looked over at Sherlock "What's she doing?" Logan looked at Sherlock. He noticed her breathing and slowed and her eyes were closed.
"Focusing," Logan replied. When he saw confused faces staring back at him he just shrugged "I don't really get how it works."
Sherlock opened her eyes again and smiled so subtly that no one saw it. Bobby's parents threw her a concerned look before going back to berating Bobby for being a mutant. As Bobby's brother pushed passed them he made eye contact with Sherlock. His attempt at an evil glare was hindered when Sherlock, smiling, changed her eye colour from a piercing violet to a cat yellow. He looked away quickly. She smiled to herself before staring intently out of the kitchen window.
She was only half listening to the conversation. The waiting game had begun. She just prayed she wouldn't have to wait too long.
"We do love you Bobby, its just," Bobby's mom sighed "The mutant problem is very complicated."
"What problem?" Logan snapped.
"Logan," Sherlock said quietly. He turned to face her and she was glaring at him. She nodded her head towards the kitchen and he followed her in. She ignored the shouted command to not touch anything, and picked up an orange out of the fruit bowl. She tucked it into the bag then turned to face Logan.
"You need to calm down and we need to get out of here. If his parents have that much of an issue then we'll take them with us but we need to get out of here now," She walked passed Logan and back into the lounge. "I'm sorry to sound so insensitive but this is something you'll either cope with or not," she said to Bobby's parents. She then turned to Bobby, Rogue and John "Either way you three are coming with us. Come on we're leaving." she was stopped in mid flow by Logan.
"Sherlock. NOW! We've got company."
She joined him in the kitchen and her heart sank as she looked out of the window and saw a barrage of police cars.
"Shit." she muttered "Stay here." she called into the lounge. Logan walked to the kitchen door and pulled it open. Sherlock joined him on the porch, staring at the police.
Inside the house she heard Rogue shout at John to stay inside. She heard him run towards the door. She flicked her hand and the door closed before he got to it.
"Let them out" Logan muttered. Sherlock looked at him in disbelief "they need to be able to run if it comes to it."
She flicked her hand at the door and it opened again. Bobby, Rogue and John spilled out on to the porch. "Don't try anything." she warned.
Guns were raised at them. Logan moved closer to Rogue, ready to take a bullet. John took his lighter out of his pocket and flicked it open and closed. Sherlock spun round to face him "Don't do anything. Let us handle this." John flicked the lighter closed but didn't put it back in his pocket.
The cop closest to them took a few tentative steps forward "Get down on the ground!" he shouted.
"There's been a misunderstanding." Logan said.
John flicked open the lighter, lit it and held the flame for a moment. The cop turned to John "Drop the weapon."
Sherlock turned to face John "I told you. Didn't I tell you to do nothing. You're not helping." She turned away again and as soon as her back was turned again he opened the lighter. Both Logan and Sherlock could see that this wasn't going to end well. They saw the guns being raised. Logan pushed Rogue behind Bobby and Sherlock moved in front of John just as the two shots were fired. Rogue screamed as Logan and Sherlock hit the ground.
"Get down!" a cop shouted at them. Rogue and Bobby lowered themselves to the ground. John opened his lighter again. "We don't wanna hurt you kid" someone was saying.
"You know all the dangerous mutants you hear about of the news?" he lit the lighter and watched the flame "I'm the worst one." for a few seconds there was nothing but flame and heat. Before John could cause any major destruction the lighter was thrown from his hand and he was thrown against the wall. Confused he looked round to see Sherlock standing up, followed by Logan. But there was something different about her. Something different about her eyes. For a moment he felt a deep fear. She was still watching him when every gun was fired in their direction. But the bullets dropped after only travelling a few feet. She turned to face the assembled policemen cowering behind cars.
"let's clear up this misunderstanding." She said to the silent crowd.
