Chapter 11

The Time Has Come

11:51 p.m. Due to the celebrity status of the Oliver's they were quickly and quietly signed in. After which Beck called their agents and publicist to let them know Jade was in labor that way they could be on the lookout for any information that leaked.

12:37 a.m. "This wallpaper is hideous. Seriously, have they not redecorated since 1992? I'm supposed to bring a human being into the world surrounded by this atrocity. I want to see whoever is in charge of this hospital. This wallpaper is unacceptable. Owww, contraction."

12:51 a.m. "Perhaps if hospitals didn't have such hideous wallpaper we wouldn't have to meet all of those annoying people in birthing class that go on and on about having a peaceful natural childbirth through their doula while they burn incense, and meditate while listening to Mozart in a water fountain in a zen garden. "Seriously, why do people want to give birth in water? They don't want to give birth in the ocean after their boat capsizes so why do they want to give birth in a bathtub?"

1:03 a.m. "What does it feel like?" Beck asked his wife when a contraction had ended.

"It feels like menstrual cramps times one thousand."

"Well, I can totally relate to that," Beck joked laying his hand upon Jade's stomach.

"You know that scene in Star Wars where Princess Leia, Hans Solo, and Luke Skywalker end up in the trash compactor after they rescued Leia and the walls of the compactor start to come closer together?"

"Yeah."

"It feels like that."

"Hmm."

1:15 a.m. "Should I go ahead and call our parents?" Beck asked.

"No, not yet since the doctor said it would be a while. It's not as if I haven't waited long enough already. We can let them sleep otherwise they'll be up here hovering."

"Sounds like a good plan."

2:01 a.m. "It's almost over," Beck reasuredly told Jade as he looked at the monitor holding her hand.

"I can't believe you nodded off," Jade angrily accused Beck.

"I'm laying here in a hospital bed in immense amounts of stabbing crippling pain as my body is trying to eject your child," Jade dramatically stated.

"I only nodded off because you nodded off," Beck calmly reminded Jade.

"Contraction," Jade sheepishly stated. Although she knew and Beck knew that she was faking a contraction.

4:41 a.m. "Why is this taking so long? I know I'm not a patient person but did I have to learn patience through being pregnant pass by due date and then one long ass labor?" Jade tired contemplated.

"I don't know. I just don't know," Beck tiredly replied back.

5:09 a.m. "Did I leave the oven on?"

"No babe. We left the house at like 11:30 p.m. and you haven't really cooked anything in like at least a month."

5:47 a.m. "Where's the other nurse?" Jade asked as she raised her head and then slumped back down on the bed.

"Her shift ended."

"Well, tell her to come back. She can't just leave when I'm in the middle of labor. That is so rude."

"She was on a twelve hour shift."

"I'll pay her extra. Beck, get your wallet out. We have money."

"I'm sorry. I know Nurse Sanchez is terrific but it's hospital procedure, sweetie. I'll make sure you're taken care of."

At the word sweetie Jade's pleading demeanor had changed as though someone had suddenly waved food in front of a hungry bear and then snatched it out of it's grasp." Beck could immediately sense it.

"Don't sweetie me. You work for me. You're younger than me. I'm not a child," Jade began saying admonishing the young nurse until Beck intervened.

"Jade, I think I should probably call our parents now. They'd want to know."

Jade agreed and then a contraction took over distracting the woman.

6:03 a.m. "It's hurts so much. Is this the end? Will I see tomorrow?"

"Babe, it is tomorrow."

6:12 a.m. "Everything's going great. Your blood pressure is holding steady. We're monitoring that closely of course. I know labor isn't happening as fast as you'd like but we're getting closer. Hopefully in an hour or so it will be time to start pushing. I know you've got to be exhausted. There's no shame in getting an epidural. I know it wasn't part of your plan but getting one now could make the rest of your labor more relaxed."

"No. I wasn't going to get one."

"Babe, are you sure? You've been in labor for a really long time," Beck said while rubbing Jade's shoulders trying to bring her a bit of comfort.

"I can tough it out."

"You don't have to."

"I know but I can do it," Jade struggled to even affirm her choice.

"Okay, I'll be back in a little bit to check you again and see how we're doing," Jade's doctor explained.

"What's with all this WE stuff," Jade angrily exclaimed, "I'm the one in labor."

"Jade you are not the only pregnant woman that has ever shouted at me or cursed at me and my nurses. You need to calm down and reserve your energy for getting that baby out," the doctor said before leaving the room.

"I can't believe you let her talk to me like that, Jade coldly said to Beck.

"Those nurses are such tattle tales. What is this first grade?"

Beck remained quiet. He knew speaking would not be a good idea right now.

6:36 a.m. "I want my mom. When is she going to get here?" Jade pleaded.

The contractions were closer together and sleep deprivation had already been taking over for some time.

"She's on her way. You're doing so great. You're so amazing. It's still kind of hard to believe that we'll be holding our own baby soon. We'll get to see what he looks like. I hope he has your blue eyes and that they do that thing that your eyes do where they change with the light and become darker blue or lighter blue and sometimes they're even green," Beck said trying to distract Jade.

"I hope he has your hair. Even though it will cause us nothing but problems. I still hope he has your hair because the pictures of you from when you were a kid were the cutest," Jade began saying but had to take a break in between sentences at one point when a contraction rippled through her body.

6:42 a.m. "Hey, Jadey," Jade's mom said entering the room.

"Mom. You're here."

"Where else would I be? Beck, you're parents are outside. I can stay with Jade for a few minutes if you want to go say hi."

"Okay, thank you. You okay if I step out?" Beck asked Jade.

"Yeah," Jade responded as Beck kissed her on the cheek and made his exit.

The last thing he heard before leaving the room was Jade say, "Mommy, I think I should've gotten the epidural. I don't think I can do this anymore."

"You're almost there baby. I know it seems like you can't find the energy but you will. My labor with you was just as long," Jade's mom encouraged her daughter.

Meanwhile in the waiting room Beck and his parents were catching up. Beck, too anxious to sit, was standing rubbing his hands together.

"Poor thing. Overdue and a long labor," Beck's mom commented.

"Yeah," Beck's dad agreed. He was a man of few words.

"Can we go see her? Just pop in for a minute."

"Yeah, just know that she's sleep deprived, in pain, and anxious so she may be a little irritable," Beck cautiously warned his parents.

"Well, of course she is Beck," his mother said lambasting him.

Beck's mom Carol and Jade's mom Evelyn took to Jade's bedside cooling her off with cold compress and giving her words of encouragement. Beck and his dad walked the halls of the maternity ward but soon found a quiet corner to stand in. Hearing the sounds of women in labor was not something either man were comfortable with. Beck kept looking at the time anxiously awaiting the time he would go back to his wife. He knew he should give her some time with her mother and mother in law but being away from his wife while she was in pain was making him anxious. Jade and her mom had gone through some up and down but for the most part had always been extremely close. Jade and Beck's mom had been very distant with one another. By the time Beck and Jade got married both of Beck's parents had significantly warmed up to their relationship and Jade. With the thought of their first grandchild being born the Oliver's were now downright giddy and Jade and particularly his mother had finally become close friends.

7:37 a.m. After Beck's mom retrieved her son he was back by his wife's side.

"Hey, I texted are friends so they would know what's going on and our neighbor's letting out our dog."

"Okay, good."

"Cat already called me of course. It's definitely a good idea that we waited so long to tell her you're in labor. I could tell she was bouncing off the walls."

"I called your dad for you too."

What did he say?" Jade asked.

"He wanted to know how you are and he asked if I'd send a picture of the baby as soon as I got a chance and let him know when he could come meet his grandson."

"Really, he said all that?"

"He did. He actually sounded kind of excited, well as excited as Richard West could sound."

Truthfully, Beck was fibbing a bit. The transaction between the two men sounded like a business transaction but he did ask to be notified as to when he could come see his grandson and daughter.

"Are you sure you don't want to get an epidural?" Beck asked Jade after another round of painful and close together contractions.

"Yeah, I think I can make it. The doctor said I should want to start pushing soon. So we're almost there, finally. Although, I'm not excited about the pushing part. I think the woman next door must be pushing right now," Jade said with a grimace on her face.

"Yeah, they should really sound proof the rooms better," Beck joked.

"You know you've done so good and I know you want to do what's best for the baby and you want to tough it out. You're so brave and you've done so amazing but it's been so long. You can get the epidural. You don't have to tough it out."

"It's okay. I think I have a second wind. I really think it's gonna be over soon."

"Okay, if you're sure. You could just get the epidural to make me feel better though. I don't like seeing you in pain," Beck said as he stroked his wife's hair with one hand and held her hand with his other hand.

"I can make it. Actually, will you buzz the nurse I think I have that pushing feeling they were talking about," Jade said closing her eyes trying to concentrate.

7:49 a.m. "Alright, Jade it's time to start pushing," the doctor said.

Jade glared at the doctor, "How can you be so blasé about this? Alright, Jade it's time to start pushing. You act like I'm pushing a piece of pie along a fork. I'm pushing out a watermelon out of something that's built for an apple. Oh and by the way why do you decide when it's time to start pushing? Shouldn't that be my decision?"

The doctor pointedly looked at Beck reminding Beck that he should be calming his wife down. In most circumstances he wouldn't have to be reminded but in this case is mind was occupied with Jade's death strangling grip cutting off blood circulation in his hand.

"Of course, it's your decision the doctor was just thinking that's exactly what you need to do," Beck jumped in doing his part to tame his wife as the doctor and a few nurses flittered around the room.

"We're gonna see our baby soon," Beck reminded her earning a smile from them both.

"Ok, I think I'm ready to start pushing now," declared Jade.

"One last thing, don't drop the baby when it comes out," Jade warned.

"Oh, I only dropped a baby one time," the doctor spoke lightly laughing to herself.

"Now is not the time for jokes and that better have been a joke," Jade warned.

8:18 a.m. After about thirty minutes of pushing Jade and Beck Oliver were setting their eyes upon the most beautiful being they had ever witnessed. Jade was out of breath, shaking, and sweaty but she didn't care. She hardly had the strength to hold her own head up but it was no problem as they placed the baby boy in her arms. Beck was next to her helping her as he put his arm around her and the baby. The first words they both said to their baby were, "Hi." He was perfect the new parents thought. His eyes were closed and he was red and white all over but he was perfect. His cries were soon diminishing as instinct took over and Jade's touch soothed her baby. All too soon the nurses were taking the baby away to clean up, finish their assessment, and bundle. The nurses heard Jade tell Beck, "Watch them and make sure they don't switch ours with another baby. I want to take home the same one I gave birth to."

As the nurses handed Jade the 8 pound 2 ounce freshly bundled baby they commented on his beautiful head of hair.

"So it begins," uttered the new mom while the new father chuckled and ran his hand through his own hair. The nurses cleared the room leaving the family alone for the first time.

"So what are we going to name him?" Beck asked his wife after kissing her on the forehead. The couple had chosen a few names but had decided to wait until he was officially in their arms to decide. They looked at their new son in amazement. He had dark brown hair, was starting to get more tan in color, and while only opening his eyes for a second had bright blue eyes.

"How about Elijah Jude Oliver? Elijah is the name of the first character you played freshman year in the first scene we did together on Sikowitz's stage in improv. It's a strong name but not too common these days. I like Eli for short. Jude I came up with because I for some reason was thinking about what we would name a girl and I thought of Rebecca because it kind of has Beck in it so it would be like naming her after you. So I was thinking Jude has a J and four letters like Jade. Jude is also the name of a really great Beattles song and freshman year in high school I had to write my own personal interpretation of it and it reminded me of us at that point in our lives with each other. So there you go," Jade explained.

"Sounds good. Nice to meet you Elijah Jude Oliver," Beck declared wearing the widest smile Jade had ever seen. Soon Beck's parents and Jade's mom came to see their brand new grandson. They of course thought he was the cutest baby they ever saw and all took turns passing him around. Beck stayed near Jade rubbing her arm to try to distract her from the pain she was still experiencing.

"How are you feeling?" Beck whispered while their parents fawned over the baby.

"Everything hurts. Some stuff more than others."

"They gave you the pain medication about ten minutes ago, so it should kick in soon," Beck said to his wife trying to reassure her and punctuated his words with a kiss on the cheek.

Throughout the rest of the day new experiences were to be had. Beck changed their baby's first diaper. Then Jade changed the second diaper because the baby peed on himself since Beck was unaware of the finer diapering points concerning boys. Jade breastfed for the first time, which she described as feeling even stranger than having her husband and a nurse hold her legs back while a doctor pulled a human being out of her. Exhaustion certainly had not given Jade a lack of colorful references.

"Alright, everything looks good how about you walk around for a bit. It can get a little stir crazy being held up in one of these small rooms. We actually have a low number of patients right now and everyone has signed their confidentiality agreements so you won't run into any sneaky people," the nurse explained.

"Alright, but only because I want to, "Jade replied.

She had her mother and Beck's mom help her fix her hair and makeup earlier. Being a celebrity she couldn't have commoners seeing her looking less than her best. Jade and Beck started to make their way towards the door. It turned out that Jade had some reservations about leaving the baby behind, even though her mother was going to stay behind in the hospital room. Jade couldn't do it so Jade's mom, Evelyn, walked alongside the couple holding the baby as they took a short stroll down the hallway. They found themselves in front of the nursery. A smile made it onto Jade's face.

"What?" Beck asked his wife.

"Our baby is way better looking than all of these other ones. I mean look at the third one in the first row." Jade explained.

Evelyn and Beck were about to scold Jade for being so crude. However, they looked at the other babies and the new Oliver baby and they had to agree.

"It's the full head of hair. It helps. All these baldies just aren't as cute. Thank you, Beck for passing on that gene. I'm glad I picked you to be the father of my child, "Jade added.

"Was there someone else in the running?" Beck asked as Jade simply smirked and replied, "Not as far as you know." A smile was seen upon the faces of the three adults.

Later that afternoon Beck's parents returned for one more visit and in the evening Tori, Cat, Robbie, and Andre all came to visit little baby Oliver.

Cat and Tori took turns fawning over the baby and even had to wipe a few cries, as did Jade. Andre promised to teach the kid music and asked if the baby thought any of the nurses were Andre's type. Robbie made silly phases, for which Jade chastised him. The boys then left for the cafeteria giving the girl's some alone time with the baby. The girls used this time to swap labor stories and Cat and Tori were astonished that Jade did not turn to an epidural during her very long and tedious delivery. They also caught her up on the latest headlines about the Oliver's latest event, Baby for Bade was the general catchphrase on all of the magazines right now. The media knew Jade had been admitted but did not know any actual details yet, like the baby's name or even gender. When Beck and Jade went home with the baby they had already decided that their publicist would release the baby's name and a general statement.

When Beck returned to Jade's room their friends left leaving the new family alone at last, except for the constant stream of nurses that kept checking on them. They told Jade to get some sleep but how could she when they kept coming in her room every thirty minutes.

Beck saw their friends out the door and then made his way over to his family smiling. Jade's eyes were focused on their son as he began to whimper lightly and she rocked him gently in her arms. Beck marveled how naturally motherhood was coming to her. He knew many would have doubts concerning Jade and motherhood but he never had any doubt in his mind that Jade would be a wonderful mother.

"What time is it?" Jade asked when she noticed Beck walk across the room.

"6:57," Beck answered.

"We're suppose to try feeding him again at 7. Will you come hold him for a second?"

Beck and Jade, a bit awkwardly but much easier than two hours ago, exchanged the baby.

Jade moved slightly to her right side and undid the hospital gown.

Beck handed Jade the baby back and they waited for the baby to fed, which was rather difficult and nerve racking and this point.

"What's that?" Jade asked as she looked at the bedside table. She had noticed that Beck laid something on the table before he had taken the baby from her.

"Is that an icepack?"

"Uhh, yeah," Beck said racking his brain trying to figure out what to say.

"For my hand," Beck confessed.

Jade furrowed her eyebrows in confusion.

"I have a bit of a stress fracture," Beck admitted but tried to make light of it.

"Really? Oops," Jade said looking back down at the baby.

"I've always said you don't know your own strength," Beck joked. "But the doctor said it's actually not to rare for father's to get a bit of a hand injury from the mother being in labor."

The truth was that the doctor said she had never seen this happen before but she wasn't surprised it was caused by Jade Oliver.

"You probably need more calcium," Jade told her husband.

"And that is the last signature you have to give. I bet you didn't think having a baby would require so much paperwork," the nurse, Jade referred to as way to cheery to be wearing scrubs with kittens on them, told the couple. When Cat had seen the nurse she promptly asked the woman where she bought the scrubs so she could buy some as well.

"Now we just have to wheel you and your baby to the car and you're free to go home", the nurse informed.

"Why do I have to ride in a wheelchair?" the new mom questioned.

"It's hospital policy," the nurse replied.

"Well, I don't want to."

"You have to honey."

"Don't honey me. Granted I cannot run a marathon but I can walk to the elevator, ride the elevator down four floors, walk across the lobby, and to the car."

"It's just against hospital policy for you to do so."

"Jade, the nurse is just doing her job. Ok, just ride in the wheelchair. You can hold the baby. I bet he'd like a ride in the wheelchair. Besides, if you hold the baby, your mom can get your bag, and I can drive the car around so the baby doesn't have to wait any longer." Beck said trying to intervene.

"Fine, I guess that works. But for the record I could've walked,"Jade made clear.

After Beck and the nurse made sure the baby was securely placed in the car and Jae's mom left in her own car it was just the family of three, alone at last.

From her spot in the back seat next to the baby Jade asked Beck, "Are you sure you have the seat in right?"

"Yeah, the nurse checked it. I'm sure it's fine," Beck replied.

"You're sure it's fine, that doesn't sound very reassuring," Jade deadpanned.

I'm positive it's secure," Beck confidently proclaimed.

"Better."

"Ready?" Beck asked as he started the engine.

"Yeah. I feel really nervous though."

"Me too," Beck also confessed causing the couple to smile and then look at their sleeping son.

"Alright, let's do this. Next phase of our life begins….as soon as we get past the traffic jam on the 101."

And with that The Oliver's, now a family of three, set off for the next phase of their life. They didn't know what the future would hold but they knew with lives like theirs it certainly wouldn't be boring.

Did you enjoy the last chapter? Did it live up to your expectations? Thank you for reading. I hope it was a consistently entertaining read! If your interested I've written other Bade stories as well. Once again thanks for reading and reviewing, it's been a fun journey. Here's to Bade!
