When Derek and Mark reached the ambulance bay Richard and Miranda were already waiting.
„What do we have?" Mark asked and put on some latex gloves.
„We don't know anything besides that it is a female who hit her head at the door frame." Richard replied.
„She hit her head at a door frame? How bad can that possibly be?" Mark chuckled.
„You have no idea!" Derek shook his head. „You should See the door frames at Merediths house. They are so sharp I once ran against one and cut my underarm so badly, you can still see the scar."
"Speaking of Meredith have you seen her yet?" Mark asked.
"Nope, not since the day I got discharged."
"Man, you're in trouble she's gonna be so pissed about you working here again."
"I know." Derek sighed.
After a few more minutes of waiting the ambulance arrived and the paramedics opened the door. The sight of Meredith laying unconscious on the stretcher made Dereks stomach turn. Christina jumped out and helped the medics to lift Merediths stretcher out of the ambulance. Webber, Bailey and Mark took over and rolled her in direction ER. Derek stood petrified next to the ambulance with his eyes wide open. As Cristina was about to go inside he grabbed her by her wrist stopping her from moving.
"What the hell happened?" He asked still in shock.
"I told her you are back." She answered.
„Why would you do that?"
„Derek, I couldn't lie to her. She's my person. She asked me and I told her the truth. This wasn't supposed to happen, she fell over the dvd box with the surgical tapes."
As Derek was still in shock and couldn't move Mark came back.
„Derek, are you coming? Listen I know this is hard for you but we need you for the consult now."
But Derek was just starring at him.
„Okay, that's it I am gonna page Nelson," Mark had his pager already in his hand as Derek grabbed him by his wrist.
"No, I'll come," Meredith was injured and he wouldn't dare to let any second rate surgeon touch her.
As they arrived in the trauma room Meredith was still unconscious.
"Shepherd, there you are," Webber waved him to the patients head.
Although Derek couldn't stand the sight of his Meredith laying unconscious on the stretcher he came over to take a closer look.
"The cut is in fact really deep I'll have to stitch it up. The amount of pressure during the impact was enough to knock her out twice the skullcap is not damaged though. Still I'd like to do a head CT just to be sure that there is no internal bleeding."
Webber nodded in agreement, "okay, somebody get her ready for the CT."
"I'll do it." Derek said without hesitation.
"Okay she's yours Shepherd."
When everybody left Derek carefully started stitching her head wound up. He was checking every stitch twice trying not to leave a big scar. After doing the stitches he cleaned everything up and put a bandage onto the wound. He freed her from her clothes and put the hospital gown on. He stroked her cheek with his thumb and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
She looked so peaceful as if she would be sleeping.
He knew he still felt something for Meredith but he didn't expected it to be so strong. At this precise moment Derek realised he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Meredith and he would do anything in his power to win her back. He leant down and pressed his lips on hers. Her lips were without any doubt the softest thing he had ever felt. He pulled back and opened his eyes hers stayed closed. He didn't know why but a part of him expected her to wake up. Speaking of waking up why didn't Meredith wake up yet? The accident happened over one and a half hours ago he injected something that should've woken her up. But her eyes stayed close.
He started to panic and wheeled her bed to the CT room. He had to know what was going on. Gently he lifted her limp body onto the machine. She was light as a feather. When they were still together he was always concerned that she was maybe too skinny and now four years later it seemed as if she'd even lost more weight. He hooked her up to a portable monitor just to make sure that if she would crash he would notice and could be there as fast as possible. He pressed the red button that started the machine and waited outside for the scans.
To his surprise the scans were clear. No anomaly, no bleeding, nothing. He brought her back to her room and sat down on the chair next to her bed. He took her cold hand in his warm one and closed his eyes.
It was in the middle of the night when he woke up. He noticed that Merediths hand wasn't in his anymore. It was holding the back of her head.
He jumped up and turned on the lamp on the nightstand.
"Mer... Meredith? Can you hear me, are you okay, Do you need something?" He started rambling.
"Ouch..." she groaned.
"Meredith..." he tried once more.
When she noticed him her eyes widened. "Derek...?"
She squeaked, "What the hell are you doing here?"
"I'm sorry I must've fallen asleep. I-"
"No, Derek what are you doing here? Why are you not in New York?" she winced in pain as she tried to turn her head.
„I... uhm, why don't you try to sleep a little more? It is the middle of the night and you need sleep."
Meredith rolled her eyes, and although her face was only illuminated by the lamp on the nightstand Derek noticed and couldn't help but smile.
"What happened anyways?" He asked and his expression changed to a concerned one.
"I... I found out that you were back." She mumbled. "Cristina told me."
He sighed, "Yes, I've already heard that part plus the part where you fell over the dvd box which was behind you. That means that you walked backwards, in fact that means that you walked backwards too fast to realise that there was something behind you, and when do people walk backwards fast? When they panic. So my question is, why did you panic when you heard that I was back?"
Merediths eyes where filled to the rim with unshed tears. "I... I don't know."
"Meredith... Come on, we both know that's not true," Derek shook his head.
"I... I guess I was just scared." She admitted silently.
"Scared?" Derek asked and took Merediths hand in his. "Why were you scared?"
"I don't know...maybe because I didn't want to fall for you again. Or because it took me so long to pick up all the pieces from the ground you left when you broke my heart." she sniffed. „When you left me I swore to myself that nobody would ever hurt me again the way you did. So I completely shut out every feeling I still had for you even my anger and frustration. I just started new. But when you came back 2 months ago all these feelings, the anger and frustration came back as well. That's why I was such a stupid bitch to you, I'm sorry." The tears she held in for so long were now running down her cheeks.
Derek felt a painful stinging on the left side of his chest as Meredith spoke these words.
"Meredith," he gently stroked her cheek, "you have nothing to apologise for. I was an ass, a big one, but I am back and I will do whatever it takes to win you back. I love you Meredith Grey."
Meredith gasped. "What about Addison?" She asked.
"I send her the papers yesterday." He smiled.
Meredith closed her eyes. "I am so happy for you Derek believe me," she took a deep breath, "But I can't be with you... "
I don't like cliffhangers but that one fitted so well. And yes, I know this chapter was too short for most of you guys liking.
Anyway thanks for reading :)
