Okay, the last chapter was a cliff hanger. This is the last chapter I am going to post unless I start getting some reviews. FYI, it's not fun to write a story when no one tells you what they think about it. I'll put the review price at the end of the chapter.
Chapter 10
Jack watched in horror as Pitch ripped Cupid into shreds. It had started out as a normal rescue mission, but now it was horrible. Cupid had knocked him out, but he still couldn't get over the fact that she had liked him. He had tried so hard just to be her friend, had achieved being 'liked', and then blew it because he taught Tooth to ice skate. Since when does that count as a date?
"Stop it! Stop it!" Jack screamed. His staff was at his feet, but it was nothing but splinters now. Pitch laughed wickedly while Cupid screamed at the top of her lungs. She was so close, and yet she had wanted to be super far.
"Jack, Jack help me! Help me…" Cupid slowly began to fade away. Everything went dark.
"Isn't that sweet." A Pitch's voice came. "You actually think she cares about you. You want little Cupid so bad, but you don't know what to do about it. Every time you get close she pushes you away."
"Shut up!" Jack yelled. Pitch chuckled.
"Do you actually think she'll ever fall for you? You are the reason she died in the first place."
"I didn't kill her with that blizzard!" Pitch sighed.
"That not what I'm talking about."
"What?" That's when Jack heard the music and woke up. He easily broke the ice that had him stuck to the ground and stood up. "Cupid?" He called. Then he heard the singing. It sounded exactly like Cupid.
Meanwhile, Cupid had started talking to Pitch when Angel saw what was blossoming in Cupid's heart; a true love song that only the true lover can hear. Angel let it free in hopes that Jack would get there in time. Jack heard the song and took off after it.
Where have all the good men gone?
And where are all the gods?
Where's the street-wise Hercules
To fight the rising odds?
Isn't there a white knight upon a fiery steed?
Late at night I toss and turn and dream of what I need
Jack passed the other Guardians in a flash, leaving them behind within seconds.
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
He's gotta be strong, he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight
Nightmares were surrounding the Empire State building, waiting for Jack. Jack raised his staff and screamed.
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the morning light
He's gotta be sure, he's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life, larger than life.
Nightmares kept coming after Jack, one after another, but he couldn't give up. There had to be a reason Cupid picked this song.
Somewhere after midnight
In my wildest fantasies
Somewhere just beyond my reach
There's someone reaching back for me
Racing on the thunder and rising with the heat
Isn't there a superman to sweep me off my feet?
The other Guardians saw Jack fighting the Nightmares and knew something was wrong. They joined the battle so Jack could hurry.
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
He's gotta be strong, he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the morning light
He's gotta be sure, he's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life
Angel knew the song was halfway over, but she still had hope that Jack would save Cupid.
Up where the mountains meet the heavens above
Out where the lightning splits the sea
I could swear that there's someone somewhere watching me
Through the wind and the chill and the rain
And the storm and the raging flood
Oh, his approach is like a fire in my blood
Jack was halfway to Pitch's underground prison.
I'll meet a hero
And then we'll dance 'til the morning light
Dreaming, he'll lead me
Held tight,
Tonight's the night
Jack saw the entrance to Pitch's prison and hurried even faster.
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
He's gotta be strong, he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight
Jack zoomed into the castle, willing the Wind to push him faster.
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the morning light
He's gotta be sure, he's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life, larger than life
The song ended. Jack looked around, wondering where Cupid was. "Cupid!" He called. Nothing replied to him. "CUPID!" Jack screamed. Here heard faint thud coming down a hallway and took after it. Jack zoomed through the Cupid's Nightmare hallway and burst through the doors. Cupid lay on the floor, motionless. "Cupid?" Jack whispered. He flew over to the angel, hoping she wasn't…well, you know, dead. Cupid was ghostly pale, but she was still breathing. It was obvious though that it was hard for her. Jack could tell that she had been crying too.
That when Jack saw Pitch. He shot a beam of ice at the King of Fear and prepared himself to protect Cupid. "Jack…" Cupid whispered.
"It's okay Cupid. I'll protect you." Jack said.
"Jack, no…" Cupid coughed and started clawing at her neck. She had to get the choking piece of metal of her throat before Jack did anything stupid. If only she knew what Pitch had planned…
"Isn't this odd," Pitch chided. "The very thing that killed you Cupid is trying to protect you."
"For the last time, I didn't kill her." Jack shouted. Cupid sat up, wondering what was going on.
"Yes, it is interesting isn't it? There are so many things the Guardians kept from you. Don't you think it's odd that you can't remember the exact date you died?" Pitch said. Cupid looked at the floor. Angel had tried to get Cupid's memories for her, but Tooth wouldn't let it happen. "Let me tell the first thing about you Cupid. You died the day before Jack died."
"Impossible." Cupid croaked. "I'm thirteen years younger than him."
"That leads to lie number two; the Guardians lost count of how old you had become, so they started all over." Inside Cupid, Angel gasped in horror as Cupid's soul turned red. Cupid was starting to hate the Guardians. "Another lie is Angel herself. She was born at the dawn of time. The only reason she shares a body with you is because Manny had to discipline her." Cupid wanted to cover her ears. Is that true? She asked Angel.
Maybe…
Cupid suddenly found that it was much easier to breathe. To her surprise, the metal choky was gone. Cupid slowly stood up and walked towards Pitch, pushing Jack out of her way in the process. "Anything else they didn't tell me?" Cupid demanded. Pitch grinned.
"The last one has already been said. Jack is the reason why you died." Jack tried to block out the memory.
"What did he do?" Cupid asked. She wouldn't even look at Jack.
"We were both from the same village." Jack answered. "We had grown up together. The Valentine's Day before I died I told this girl named Amanda Harly that I loved her. Amanda Harly was your name before you died. You told me that you loved me too. After that we dated for a bit. Then the day before I died, I kind of, I kind of…"
"You kind of what Jack?" Cupid whispered. Tears were rolling down her cheeks.
"I kind of told you I hated you and called you some really ugly names. You ran off crying, telling me that you would hate me forever. You took a babysitting job that evening, so I couldn't apologize. Nobody told me that you died, so the next day I was happy and took my sister ice-skating. You know the rest." Angel couldn't believe how red Cupid's soul was.
"You know what Jack? I don't care anymore." Cupid said. "I've already agreed to stay with Pitch forever. There's nothing you can say that could make me hate you more. I don't care anymore." Pitch pulled something out from behind him. It looked exactly like Cupid's ruby necklace, but the diamond was black.
"Cupid, I love you," Pitch said. "But I need you to wear this to turn you evil."
"What? I never agreed to that." Cupid snapped.
"I know, but you won't last long here without this."
"Okay then, here's another deal. You free the fairies and leave the Guardians alone and I'll put it on."
"I can't agree to that. I have to destroy the Guardians to achieve my goal."
"I can give something more powerful than Fear. Nightmares spread fear, but hate brings fear and kills love. It comes in all shapes and sizes. It will make you a lot more powerful." Cupid said. Pitch thought for a second and nodded. Cupid turned around and closed her eyes while Pitch put on the necklace. The second it was in place, Cupid's eyes rolled back into her head and collapsed into Pitch's arms.
Jack watched in horror as Cupid's skin turned white, her hair grew longer and darkened so it black, her red lips turned into a soft grey, and her clothes melted into a black dress. Suddenly her snow white wings burst out of her back, but the instantly turned into bat wings. Cupid opened her eyes, but now they were a blood red. Cupid stood up and looked at herself. Then she let out a blood curdling cackle and face Jack.
"Still think I'm a weakling?" Cupid snarled, her voice slightly deeper now. A black mist and started to surround her. Pitch walked over to Cupid and placed his hand on her shoulder.
"Presenting the new Cupid; a Cupid with no curse, no fear, and no love except for me. She has a strong enough will to keep Angel imprisoned forever, and she hates the Guardians more than she hates love." Pitch explained. Cupid shrieked and lunged for Jack, a death arrow on her bow.
