Chapter 11

"Let the girl go." A man shouted from behind Klaus taking them both aback.

Klaus let Caroline go and turned around to face the man. He found himself looking at a guard that had his gun pointed at him in a threatening way. Klaus automatically put himself in front of Caroline to protect her. The guard kept his gun aimed at Klaus and slightly turned his head to the side and his hand to the radio he had attached on his shoulder before talking in it.

"I found the girl, she is with a prisoner like people from the outside said she would be." He informed someone through his radio before turning back toward them, "In your cell, inmate."

"Are you aware that the cells are open? I can go in if you want but I'll be able to go out as well." Klaus stated nonchalantly not even caring that there was a gun pointed at him.

"I said, in your cell, inmate." The guard yelled and he looked rather terrified if you asked Klaus. He couldn't blame him, guards knew about Klaus' past as a military, they knew what kind of training he had, so they knew that pointing a gun at him didn't mean they were safe.

"He isn't going to hurt me." Caroline said from behind Klaus.

"Miss, don't get involved in this, please." The guard said nicely keeping his eyes on Klaus.

"I won't walk into that cell and leave her alone with you. Where she goes, I go." Klaus said as a matter of fact. The guard turned his head to the side once more to talk in his radio.

"I have a problem. The inmate doesn't want to leave the woman with me." He said.

"It's fine, they've been observing them outside and they said he just wants to protect her." Someone instantly replied. At Klaus' and Caroline's surprise, the guard lowered his gun and started to walk toward them.

"They opened one of the entrances of the prison, I have to bring you there as soon as possible Miss. We have to hurry, we don't want prisoners to find out about this entrance. We've observed them and most of them are planning an escape from another entrance, that's why we opened that one, there is almost no one on this side of the prison." The guard informed them as he reached them, "Let's go."

The guard started to walk away and Klaus and Caroline followed after him.

"Inmate, don't try anything stupid. The police is outside with guns pointed at the entrance in case a prisoner tries to do something stupid." The guard warned not sparing a glance at them.

Caroline turned her head to the side to look at Klaus. He grabbed her hand and held it tightly. She was happy, she would finally get out of this prison; she would be safe again, and she would see her mother, and her friends. But this also meant that she would be separated from Klaus. They had spent only two days together but the bond they had now was stronger than anything she had ever had with anyone. There was a part of her that didn't want to get out, she wanted to stay with Klaus, forever, but she had to leave. Klaus would get out some day, anyway, she would wait for him.

Klaus was holding Caroline's hand tightly, in a few minutes she would walk out of here and they would be separated. A part of him wanted to take the guard's gun, kill him, and take Caroline hostage, so she couldn't get away from him. But he couldn't, for her sake, for her safety, he had to let her go. It was strange to think that way about a woman he knew for only two days, but it was how he really felt.

They had been walking through the corridors for ten minutes and they hadn't crossed paths with anyone. Looked like the guard was right, this side of the prison was empty, all the prisoners were on the other side planning an escape at the other entrance. Klaus wanted to laugh all of a sudden, if only all of those bastards knew the main entrance was open. His train of thoughts were broken when Caroline abruptly stopped walking. Klaus looked up to see that they were about to walk into the room where inmates could meet with their friends and family.

He turned his head to the side to look at Caroline and his heart tightened when he saw the sadness in her eyes. It was the room where her father had been killed just before her eyes. They had slit his throat open, inches away from her, while she had been facing him and holding his hands.

"What's wrong?" The guard asked when he noticed that Klaus and Caroline had stopped. Klaus ignored him and turned toward Caroline. He let go of her hand and brought both of his hands up to cup her face.

"Caroline, look at me." Klaus nicely ordered and she did, "We have to go through that room, I know it's painful, I know it, but we have to. Don't look to your right, okay?"

"Yes." Caroline said with a weak voice.

Klaus looked back up at the guard and nodded as a way to tell him that everything was fine. The guard started to walk once again and Klaus grabbed Caroline's hand and followed him. They entered the room and Caroline turned her head to the left, not wanting to see her father's dead body. She could feel her eyes filling with tears. She heard a small noise and abruptly turned her head to the right. Her eyes immediately landed on her father. There was another prisoner next to him. Why was he next to her father's body?

"Hey! What are you doing?" Caroline yelled letting go of Klaus' hand and taking a step toward the man.

Klaus and the guard instantly looked to the side. They had been focused on just moving forward and they hadn't even noticed someone else was in the room. The guard took his gun out and hurriedly walked in front of Caroline.

"Stand up and put your hands up in the air." The guard yelled. Klaus grabbed Caroline's arm as she tried to take another step forward and put himself in front of her, next to the guard.

The prisoner on the other side of the room slowly looked up and stood up but kept his hands behind his back.

"I said, put your hands up in the air, inmate." The guard yelled once more.

Klaus observed the prisoner intently as he slowly brought his hands into view. As soon as Klaus saw the gun in his right hand he grabbed Caroline. The guard obviously didn't pick up on the gun as fast as Klaus did because a gunshot was heard and he dropped to the floor with a bloody wound in the neck, dropping his gun at the same occasion.

Caroline observed the scene in horror. She screamed when the guard dropped dead to the floor with his eyes wide open. Her whole body was trembling. Before she knew it, Klaus was literally throwing her behind a table to protect her. Everything happened so fast. Klaus grabbed the gun the guard had dropped to the floor and in a swift move aimed at the other prisoner and shot. The other man dropped to the floor, the bullet had hit him in the center of his head, between his eyes. Caroline's eyes widened, Klaus wasn't playing around, he knew how to use a gun. It had all seemed so easy for him.

"Come on." Klaus said breaking her out of her daze. He grabbed her and pulled her back up, "Are you okay?" He asked checking her over. Caroline's eyes and mouth were still wide open. Then, her eyes landed back on her father and her lower lip started to tremble, "Caroline, you have to be strong, I know it's hard, but we have to go now. It's not safe to stay here."

But Caroline couldn't look away from her father. Tears started to drop down her cheeks. It was a lot easier to deny her father's death when his dead body wasn't lying there, just in front of her. She started to have difficulties to breath, it was too much, she couldn't handle this, she wasn't strong enough. Klaus cupped her face in his hands and forced her to look at him instead of at her father.

"Caroline, please, we have to go."

When her eyes met his, Klaus flinched. It was so hard and painful to see her in such despair. Her eyes were begging for someone to just take all of it away, to make her forget all of this. But no one could do that. Klaus brushed his thumbs on her cheeks to dry her tears and a strangled sob escaped her lips. Klaus brought her against him and pressed her body against his, burying her face in the crook of his neck. Caroline's hands instantly went up around him as another sob left her lips. Klaus knew that she needed to let go, but he couldn't look at her when she was in this state, it was too painful to see her like this, so he was glad her face was in the crook of his neck.

They stayed like that for five minutes. Klaus knew they had to hurry, but he also knew Caroline couldn't just turn off her emotions and act as if nothing had ever happened and everything was fine in the world.

"Let's go." Klaus eventually said pulling away. He grabbed Caroline's hand and dragged her out of the room.

"Where did he get that gun?" Caroline asked after a long silence. She wasn't crying anymore, she had to get out of here and crying wouldn't help.

"He must have taken it from a guard." Klaus answered not looking at her and staying focused, "Where is the entrance? I've never entered from this side, this is where visitors come from."

"It's that way." Caroline said pointing a finger at the corridor on the left. They walked into the corridor and walked for two minutes before they reached the doors that were closed in front of them.

Klaus looked at the doors for a few seconds before walking closer to one of them and looking through the small window that was on the top of the door. The guard hadn't been lying, there were policemen with guns aimed at the door, and there was no way of escaping the prison through those doors. The policemen were all standing by their cars, the doors of the cars were open and they were using them to protect themselves in case someone armed would come out. They were far away from the doors though, Klaus would say twenty, maybe thirty, meters away from them. There were fifteen policemen aiming their guns at the doors and a lot of people gathered behind them. He wanted to see if Elijah was there but they were too far away and Klaus couldn't make out faces properly.

Eventually, Klaus took a step back and turned around to face Caroline. He brought one of his hands up to her cheek and slightly caressed it with his knuckles. He bent down and kissed her lips tenderly. Caroline brought her hands up to cup Klaus' face to keep him close to her. Klaus slightly pulled away, resting his forehead against Caroline's. He could feel her heavy breathing against his lips and he loved that feeling. He didn't want to let her go, he wanted to stay in her arms forever. But he had to. He would see her again anyway. He would come out of prison someday, he trusted his brother. Elijah was an amazing and talented lawyer.

"You have to go." Klaus said in a whisper taking a step back but Caroline brought her hands behind his neck and pulled him closer once more.

"I don't want to leave you." She said looking deep into Klaus' blue-grey eyes.

"I don't want you to either." Klaus stated, "But you have to. And we will see each other again, right?" Klaus asked and Caroline picked up on his tone of voice, he wasn't as confident as he usually was, far from it.

"Of course! I'll come and visit you. And I'll wait for you outside, I promise." Caroline exclaimed to reassure him.

"I want you to be happy, Caroline. And if you meet someone else while I'm still stuck here, I don't want you to hold back because of me." Klaus said and it was hurting every fiber of his body to say that. Because, of course he didn't want Caroline to meet someone else, she was the only woman he could see a future with, she was the only one that had managed to make him feel. But most of all, he wanted her to be happy.

"Don't say that." Caroline said with a weak voice. She didn't want to meet someone else, she wouldn't meet someone else.

"There is a whole word out there waiting for you, great cities, and art, and music. Genuine beauty. And you can have all of it. Don't waste your time waiting for me, don't miss out on all of those things." Klaus said in a whisper, his lips close to Caroline's.

No one had ever said something so beautiful to Caroline. No one had ever cared about her happiness before their own. Because it was what he was doing. She knew he didn't want her to move on and forget about him, but he was ready to make her believe it was what he wanted so she wouldn't feel guilty if it actually happened.

"I can discover the world with you. I will wait for you, Klaus. However long it takes." Caroline whispered before crashing her lips on his. After a few seconds, she detached herself from him and walked toward the door. She didn't turn around to look at Klaus, if she did, she wasn't sure she would be able to walk out that door.

Caroline brought her hand on the door handle and opened the door. When the fresh air hit her face, she closed her eyes for a second and breathed in deeply before starting running out of the prison. There were policemen all around her but they were far away. She could hear them shouting but she had no idea what they were saying. She thought she made out a:

"Don't shoot! Lower your weapons." At the exact same moment as a loud noise was heard.

Caroline couldn't understand what was happening at first. She stopped abruptly as all the policemen lowered their weapons. She was still a lot closer to the prison than to the policemen. One of them dropped his gun to the floor and brought his hands up in front of his mouth, he looked guilty.

"Caroline!" Caroline heard her mother screaming her name. It all happened so fast. Caroline brought her hands to her stomach as she felt a sharp pain there. She looked down at her hands to see that they were all bloody. The next second, Caroline dropped to the ground with a loud thud. Everything was so quiet, as if everyone was frozen.

"Nooo!" Caroline heard Klaus' voice. Why was she hearing his voice, he was supposed to be in the prison.

Caroline could only see the bright blue sky over her as she was lying down on the ground, but her vision was becoming blurry. After a few seconds, Klaus' face appeared in front of her. He brought his hands to her stomach and put pressure on it. Caroline looked at him and tried to talk but she couldn't, there was no sound coming out of her mouth.

It wasn't quiet anymore, there was a lot of noise, some people were screaming while some others were trying to keep everyone calm.

Caroline started to panic. She brought her hands up to Klaus' arms. The pain in her stomach was unbearable and he was putting pressure on it, it was painful, she wanted him to stop. Her eyes were filled with tears and she could feel them already pouring down her face.

"Ssh, it's okay, Caroline. You've been shot, I know you don't understand what's happening to you right now. You're going to be alright." Klaus said reassuringly, he was a military, he knew what he was talking about right? He must have seen a lot of men being shot, "Call 911."

"Get away from her inmate!" Someone yelled, Caroline couldn't see who it was and she didn't recognize the voice.

"She is losing a lot of blood I have to put pressure on her wound." Klaus said the anger clear in his voice. Caroline felt like all of this wasn't real, it was like she was watching the scene unfolding from afar.

"It's fine." Caroline heard her mother say to the policeman who had asked Klaus to get away, and the next second, she was on her knees next to Caroline, "Caroline, sweety, stay with me okay?"

"Mom." Caroline managed to whisper. She started to cough and blood came out of her mouth. She must look like a mess. She still had bruises because of the several hits she had taken during those two days in the prison and now she had been shot.

"Ssh, don't try to speak." Liz said brushing Caroline's hair with her fingers. Caroline could see her eyes filling with tears. Liz stood up and turned around, she was a woman of pride, Caroline knew it, "When will the ambulance arrive?" She shouted and Caroline could hear the obvious fear in her voice, "Did you tell them it was an extreme emergency?" Liz had always hated to feel useless, and she must feel so helpless right now.

Caroline turned her head back toward Klaus who was still putting pressure on her wound. He wasn't looking at her face, he was concentrated on her bloody wound.

"K-klaus." Caroline called and his face snapped toward her, "I'm c-cold."

Klaus looked at her pale face, her lips were turning blueish, she was freezing. No, this couldn't be happening, Caroline wouldn't die, no, not her. She wouldn't die just in front of him. This wasn't fucking happening. Klaus felt tears filling his eyes. It was his fault, he should have known it was risky, Caroline was dressed like a prisoner, Klaus should have known one of those policemen would be stupid enough to shoot her.

"I'm sorry." Caroline said with a strangled voice.

"No, no, no, this is none of your fault, love. You're going to be fine." Klaus said as his lower lip started to tremble. He could see it in her beautiful blue eyes, he could see life slowly leaving them, "Don't die on me, Caroline, don't you dare." Klaus said angrily as his tears eventually poured down his cheeks. Caroline's eyes slowly closed and Klaus shook her forcefully. Her eyes reopened with difficulty.

"Remember what I told you inside? There is a whole world out there waiting for you. You can't die. You have to fight! Fight, Caroline!" Klaus exclaimed. He was aware of all the people standing around him, he knew they could all see him cry and hear what he was saying to Caroline, but he didn't care. She was more important than any of this. He knew why her mother wasn't next to her right now but yelling at everyone instead, she didn't want to say goodbye, because she didn't accept that her daughter could die at any second, and saying goodbye would mean that she gave up all hope of Caroline surviving.

Klaus bent down and tenderly kissed Caroline's lips. He then brought his lips to her hear to whisper something that she would be the only one to hear.

"I love you." He straightened back up to see that Caroline was trying to talk once more and he hushed her, "Ssh, hold on, okay. I can hear the ambulance coming. Can you hear it?"

Caroline weakly nodded, she could hear it, they were here, they would save her. But everything was already starting to become black. Her eyes closed, she couldn't see Klaus anymore, she couldn't see anything, or hear anything, it was all darkness. Her fight was over, she had tried, but she hadn't been strong enough.

Klaus watched in despair as Caroline's eyes closed and her hands dropped at her sides, he shook her, but she didn't wake up. She wasn't moving anymore.

"Caroline?" Klaus called in a whisper. But there was no answer, no movement.

"Caroline?" Klaus called louder with a broken voice, and once more, not answer.

Klaus brought his hand to her neck, on her pulse point, but there was no pulse to find anymore.

"NO!" Klaus screamed still looking for her pulse, maybe it was there but it was too weak for him to feel it, maybe he hadn't placed his fingers on the right place on her neck. He had to find it, she wasn't dead, she was still alive, he had to find her pulse. He was putting blood all over her but he didn't care, he had to find her pulse. It was like his heart was being pulled out of his chest a little more with every second that passed by. Everyone became silent around him and the only thing he could hear was the ambulance getting nearer. A strangled sob left his lips. He had to find her pulse.

But deep down he knew he wouldn't find her pulse.

Caroline was gone, she was dead.

"It's over, she is gone." A man said from behind him, putting a hand on his shoulder. Klaus harshly pushed his hand away.

"No, it's not over." He said with a trembling voice. Klaus brought his hands to Caroline's chest and forcefully pushed on it over and over again, "It's not over, Caroline, do you hear me? Your fight isn't over." Klaus wouldn't just give up, Caroline wouldn't die on him, not like that, it was too soon, way too soon.

"Please, come back to me, please." Klaus begged as he continued pushing on her chest over and over again.
