Half-breed business
"That went better than expected," Sorena said as they sat in Katharina's room. It was large with a four-poster bed, a huge closet and vanity. On the opposite wall was a glass door which led to a balcony.
"We should wait until dinner. I don't know why they didn't do anything at the ceremony, but I don't think they haven't planned anything," Katharina voiced her suspicion.
"Relax, Kathi and look at you. That's some outfit. Way better than jeans, t-shirt, ponytail and sneakers all the time. Marie gave you a total makeover. You're one pretty girl."
Katharina turned to Caro with a look of annoyance gracing her features. "My personal style is designed to be functional not fashionable. Skirts are in many ways unpractical, high heels are quite unhealthy for the feet and putting my hair into a ponytail keeps it out of my face, if you forget about the bangs, because if I cut it, my legal guardian is going to kill me for having a boyish haircut."
"Your guardian's that bad?" asked McCoy with a sympathetic half-smile.
Katharina rolled her eyes. "You have no idea. She has a problem with the fact that I'm not the way other girls are. I don't care about clothes and make-up. I already have a boyfriend, so I don't have to think about or look at every boy I meet. I'm not a girly like…like these four!" She pointed at her friends, causing them to laugh.
"You're so cute when you're angry," giggled Verena, followed by another eye roll.
"I'll be outside. Call me if you're done with being silly and childish and you're ready for a serious discussion." And with that the princess was out of the glass door.
Spock followed her. Katharina stood at the railing, looking at the horizon and thinking.
"May I join you?"
She looked up at him with a slight smile. "Sure. What can I do for you, Mr. Spock?"
He met her gaze, these familiar ice-blue eyes, though different. As she broke eye contact, he said: "Spock will be sufficient."
"Alright, Spock."
"What do you prefer to be called?"
"It doesn't really matter. I prefer Katharina, Kathi, K or Rina, that's what the English-speaking people call me."
"Cinjica is your Puvlagonian name?"
"Yeah, it's the Puvlagonian equivalent to my Terran name."
The look in her eyes became distant. "When I'm standing here it often makes me wonder."
"About what exactly?"
"Did my father know? Did he know about his wife being a vampire? Was he aware of me being a hybrid? And if he knew, did it bother him?"
"Did he show any signs of discomfort around you?"
"Well, no. he was always like other fathers, even a bit overprotective. He played with me, read stories to me, things humans do with their children. He accepted that I was different, even if I didn't know how different I really was."
She looked him up and down. "But I think you know what it is like. You're a hybrid, too, aren't you? I can smell a low amount of red hemoglobin in your bloodstream."
He raised an eyebrow. "Your sense of smell is very accurate."
She smiled shyly. "Thanks." And sighed. "It's an awful feeling, to know that your family doesn't accept you, the isolation because even the humans can tell that you're not like them. It's so…lonely."
He watched her. She was so different from the woman he knew but so much alike at the same time.
Katharina was very able to control her feelings, but she showed more of them than Lt. Meunier, maybe because she was afraid of doing great damage with her powers if she lost control, but Spock more and more suspected that there had been events in the girl's past that made her so reserved, untrusting, unemotional and…vulnerable.
He considered and then put a hand on her shoulder. She flinched at the unexpected contact, but relaxed quickly.
"I…understand the feeling," he told her.
She smiled again, showing her, compared to a full vampire, short pointed fangs.
"Are you two coming? It's dinnertime," McCoy's voice sounded from inside.
"We should be going. But I still don't trust the peace."
"There will be no harm in being careful and on guard," he agreed.
He let go of her shoulder, receiving a quick flash of her…gratitude and together they went back inside.
Hope you enjoyed it. Please review.
