Patrat - the Scout pokemon

"Not long now!" a little creature moved excited in the curled up position he was. "Oh, I'm so happy! I waited so long! I'll see what the outside world looks like!" he moved so much, he felt his whole egg rolling out of something. The fall was a little painful. "Ow! I wonder what that was," the little one's mood darkened, but then he saw light all around himself. "Yeah! It's time!"

A little brown egg with lighter brown accents turned completely white, or rather, light. It only took a few seconds, but it felt like eternity for the little creature - to finally be let out, rethinking the time he spent in the egg. And now nothing was left to remind him of his past life stage... And he didn't think he would miss it.

He stretched out and opened his red and yellow striped eyes that seemed to be a part of a black mask, when they were shut. He looked around with squinted eyes, because he wasn't used to the sun, even though the light just a few seconds ago was way more intense than the yellow star. He looked for someone that was supposed to be close to him. He couldn't have been let out into another world alone... could he?

But there was no one.

The creature hatched in a forest, near a little mountain. He figured he must have fallen off of it. The little creature couldn't help but start crying. He was only a few moments old after all. He hoped someone would hear him and take him back to where he belonged... But no one answered his cry.

"Should I try climbing it?" he thought to himself while still sobbing. "I guess it's the only way to find out if someone is waiting for me there."

A little scout pokemon that just hatched, trying to climb a steep, rocky, but little mountain.

It was obvious it won't go well

"I need to do this! The truth is on that mountain!" he pushed himself although his newly hatched body was weak and not used to anything, but his mind was already advanced in comparison to his age.

*crack*

A part of the mountain he was holding onto conveniently broke off. The little pokemon yelled and shortly fell to the ground. Luckily, he wasn't that high, but his back still hurt from the impact.

Tears appeared in his eyes again and blurred his vision. Does no one want him so much that he would be left here all alone, to figure out how to live in this new world by himself?

The little one started sobbing, but got up on his feet and wiped the present tears away. More came after the wiped ones, but the scout pokemon didn't care. He took a last look at the mountain top and went away. His little feet making little, unsteady steps.

The sun was almost scorching and heat wasn't good for a newborn that doesn't even know what food or water is. But he felt his tummy rumbling. He knew something must be done about this, because it partially hurt.

With tears still dropping and arms wrapped around his belly, the scout pokemon ventured into a forest. Pokemon noises scared him a bit, because he couldn't see who was spreading them. The trees were so big in comparison with the little pokemon. It was even scarier, when he realized that.

Finally, his tummy started hurting so much, he couldn't walk anymore and he just sat down on the ground, or rather, grass.

"Why did I go? Now I have no energy to come back and no one will ever look for me here," the newborn would have started swearing at himself, if he knew how to. He wanted to yell, like the time he was falling off the mountain, but he somehow couldn't. He couldn't speak his thoughts out loud too. He could only sob. At least he could do it loudly.

"Hey! You there! What are you doing in our territory?!" a male voice yelled out from somewhere. The newborn looked around startled, but couldn't spot the one shouting out the question. "Did you hear me?! I said, what are you doing in our territory?!" there it was again. He turned his little head as much as he could, but he still didn't see anyone. "That's it!" the voice got angry and something thumped behind the little one. The scout pokemon jumped on his feet, but another grumble reminded him that he doesn't have anymore energy and his body fell down, without his permission. "Wh-what are you doing?" someone walked up to the scout pokemon. His voice was calmer and maybe a little confused.

The scout pokemon hoped that he had at least enough energy to sit up again. His little arms trying to raise his whole body. He was half way there when they decided to give up too. The little one closed his eyes and waited for another fall, at least this one was very very little... but something caught him.

"Hey. Are you alright?" the creature helped the newborn sit up and he could see who saved him.

"He... he looks like me... I think..." the scout pokemon looked at his hands and at the other pokemon's. The same brown little hands with four fingers. Maybe his was smaller, but he had to be younger after all.

"Hey, Purrloin got your tongue?" the new creature tilted his head.

The little one opened his mouth, but couldn't get a sound out. He felt so pitiful. So weak.

"Oh my. You can't speak, can you? On the other hand, you look very young. Were you born just a few days ago?" the brown creature got in closer and somehow made the little one fluster from the closeness.

But he nodded.

"R-really?... Then... Then I'm sorry..." the creature lowered his head. "I remember when I was a little Patrat like you. It wasn't so long ago. So, do you have a family?"

"So I am a Patrat? And we really are similar, like I thought... And... my family? Do I have one?" He hoped he did, but he never saw them, so they kind of didn't exist. He shook his head and a frown appeared on the bigger pokemon's face. But then it slowly turned into a smile.

"Welcome aboard to the Kitsu clan," he showed the whole area with his arms "Come with me and live a better life with us."

Patrat didn't quite understand, but it seemed like a wonderful opportunity. Why would he need a family, when he can be a part of a clan... Whatever that is.

The newborn pokemon nodded and they both ventured deeper into the woods, where a life Patrat never imagined, began.

After the older scout pokemon gave Patrat some berries and led him to a pond, where he could drink, they went inside a dark, underground cave. Only a few purple flames spread light, but it did make all the shadows creepier and scarier for the little newborn.

"This is our base," the pokemon showed the whole cave with his arm. "My name is Perro the Patrat. Those are sisters," he showed to two purple felines with yellow accents. One was bigger than the other. "The smaller one - Purrloin - is called Little Missy and the bigger one - Liepard - is called Lady," he started introducing.

"Hey! We are here, you know. Don't talk about us like we are things!" The Purrloin named Little Missy growled and hissed.

"Alright, alright. Don't cause a scene in front of the newbie." Perro teased. It seemed Little Missy wanted to talk back, but when she looked at the little one, she just lowered her head and stayed quiet. Then, Perro showed to a strange, cream colored mask. "That's our scaring pokemon. Don't be surprised that someone is flying behind you. There probably is," the scout pokemon smirked and the smaller version of him looked around worriedly. Perro started laughing and patted Patrat on the back. "Chill, dude. No one's there. But seriously, that's Yami - our Yamask. Oh... right... I don't even know your name. ...Do you... you know... have one?" Perro stuttered a bit.

Patrat thought a little and shook his head.

"Oh my! He doesn't have a name," Little Missy said sadly, but then grinned. "Dibs on giving him a name!" she shouted.

"Hey! You have no right! I found him! I should do it!" Perro disagreed.

The Purrloin wanted to argue further, but someone shouted.

"Human alert! Plan A!"

"Using Smog!" the white pokemon with purple flames said in unison. They seemed to both be male. They jumped in front of everyone, near the exit from the cave, and released thick grey smoke from their flames, straight towards outside.

They acted so quickly, Patrat didn't catch who was this human someone was shouting about.

"Using Astonish!" Yami yelled. It appeared she was a female. She flew in the smoke and did something so that everyone could hear a scream. It reminded Patrat a little of his scream, when he was falling off the mountain.

"The victim just flinched and crouched! Confusion is needed." Yami's voice was heard from the smoke.

"Roger!" another female's voice was heard, but she jumped into the smog so fast, Patrat could only see she was black and white. "Using Confusion!"

"Hey," Perro said softly and put his hand on Patrat's shoulder, but even that big of a calmness was a little startling in this situation. "Let's go. It's not safe here. Everything will be explained later."

Patrat took a last glance at the dark smoke, covering some kind of battle, and went with Perro.

After a short climb into a little mountain (luckily, Perro was there to keep Patrat from falling), the two went into a narrow tunnel and at the end of it, Perro gestured towards the outside of it with his hand. Patrat tilted his head, but understood that Perro wanted him to see something. He carefully came to an edge of the tunnel. It was somehow built, like it was sticking to the ceiling and Patrat could see the battle from way higher.

"Isn't this more dangerous?" he thought for a moment, but here, he could see what was happening near the exit, where the smog seemed thinner from above, so he was quickly drawn into the excitement.

"Be careful. You don't want to fall," Perro warned him teasingly, but Patrat almost couldn't hear him.

A little black-haired girl was crouching near the entrance and had her face buried in her hands. The occasional shaking must have meant she was crying or sobbing. The pokemon around her wanted to get her out, but she wouldn't budge. It seemed their attacks didn't work on her well.

Finally, the black and white pokemon raised her hands and started to glow red. The girl glowed as well, but when something was about to happen, the girl moved so quickly, she left after images. The red glow had been broken. But how did she move, when she stayed in the same position? Did the smoke just haze everything up?

"Something's not right," Perro growled next to Patrat. "Stay put. I think I have an idea about what's going on."

The creamy brown pokemon jumped into the smog, straight from the ceiling tunnel and ran towards the human girl. It seemed his eyes started glowing green.

"I knew it!" he shouted. "Abort the mission!"

"What? Why?" someone asked.

"I'm impressed, Perro," a woman's voice came from the little girl. Then a dark grey creature with red hair poofed in her place. "I didn't know Detect could do that."

"Heh... Actually, it didn't do that. I just had a big hunch and you revealed yourself immediately," his voice was proud, but he suddenly shivered for some reason and bowed. "I'm-I'm sorry Kitsuna."

"Yes. You forgot your place for a bit, Perro. But you managed to repair the mistake with my delicate hint, so I won't hold it against you," she talked like a mother, but a little resentful one. "Nonetheless, you were the one that found out what was happening, so you can go with me on the next mission."

"Thank you. Thank you very much," Perro bowed again.

"Alright! Clean this Smog up until someone gets poisoned!"

"Aye aye!" a young male's voice was heard just above Patrat. It really startled the little guy and he started moving backwards from the little corridor, towards the edge, but the purple creature with huge ears, caught him, before something bad happened. "Sorry to scare you. But I needed to answer our leader, didn't I?" he smiled sweetly while closing his yellow eyes for a bit and then flew towards the ceiling. After a few flaps, the smog was out of the cave and no one seemed to have gotten hurt.

"Nice job, Litu and Latu," the big dark pokemon spoke up again. "I'm always amazed how you can make smog almost not toxic. I was sure that someone would get hurt now, but everyone's fine, RIGHT?!" she yelled the last word and got many "yes", "yeahs" and similar, back. She smiled and revealed her sharp fangs. "Good. Now, would someone care to tell me about the Patrat that almost fell off the edge of the ceiling tunnel?!" she yelled once more, but not so loudly.

"Yes, Kitsuna..." Perro came back to her, a little startled. Patrat didn't even see when he left. "I found that little guy in the woods alone. It seems he is just a few days old and can't even speak yet," the scout pokemon explained.

"Does he have a name?" the dark grey pokemon pierced Patrat with her look, but not in a frightening way. It just seemed to give the impression who is the boss here and Patrat clearly understood it.

"N-no. We wanted to come up with one, but we needed to go into plan A."

"So that's what my little pokemon do, when I'm not home," her voice was kind of disappointed, but the cheerful tones really left Patrat confused. "Well then, let's get this over with." She jumped an amazing height and, quickly, she and Patrat were face to face. She grabbed the little creature and landed on the ground, holding him by the scruff on his neck. "Let's see..." she observed the shivering newborn. The ride was certainly unexpected and not fun at all. "I'll call you... Baby."

"BABY?!" everyone shouted, but their leader's glare made them stay quiet.

"Maybe I'll change it later, but now he doesn't deserve a bigger name. He was only born today, FYI," she informed the others.

"How did she know?" Baby had a confused look in his eyes, but Kitsuna ignored it. Then, he was finally let down.

"Alright, everyone! Time to sleep! Ginna and Yami are the ones that have to patrol the first hours! Then Perro and Baby will go!" she announced to the whole cave.

"M-me?" the little Patrat stuttered even in his thoughts.

He watched as the pokemon with the creamy mask that now had a some sort of shadowy body with big red eyes and the black and white pokemon, who looked just like a girl, passed the sitting Baby and eyed him. The red eyes of both of them made the little Patrat flinch and the patrolling pokemon seemed pleased that Baby was so easy to scare. Now the little one felt bad.

"Let's go... Baby. It isn't that hard. Don't worry," Perro smiled and took the little Patrat by the hand. After a shorter climb than before, they entered a little cave inside the cave. "There. This is where we sleep. I figured because you are a Patrat, we should stick together," Perro smiled warmly again. "Well then," *yawn* he stretched and after a few circles while walking on four feet, laid down. "Good night."

"Good night." Baby mimicked his senior, but couldn't sleep. So many questions weren't answered. So many actions not understandable. He didn't even know how he knew about the world at least that much. He would give so many questions to everyone, if only he could talk. But maybe he knows about the outside word for the price of his speech? Could a little Patrat figure out these things? His name is Baby for crying out loud.

"It's time. The second shift has begun," a voice, somehow unfamiliar, rang in Baby's head, but when he opened his eyes, he saw Perro.

"How strange," he thought. "I forgot his voice, although it was the first voice I ever heard."

"Sorry to treat you so roughly, but rules are rules. We will be off duty for a while after this, so we will be able to get better sleep," he whispered and started walking towards the exit. Baby ran after him with his tiny four feet making tiny steps.

The cave was as dark as ever and only the ghostly purple flames of Litu and Latu flickered on the walls. It gave off terrifying shadows and Baby ran to Perro, to hang onto his arm.

"Scared, huh?" Perro chuckled. "Don't worry, they are friendly. It's just that their flames don't give the warm orange and red colors as everyone expects of a fire type. So anyways," they exited the cave and after a little observation, went straight ahead. "I know that you can't speak and all, but I think you are interested in what is going on here, correct?"

Baby quickly nodded. He wanted to know these things since the second he stepped into the cave yesterday.

"You seem really energetic for someone who just woke up," Perro smiled. "Alright... So where should I begin...? Well this is the Kitsu clan territory, of course named after Kitsuna herself. She is the leader that brought us all together. We are mainly orphans. Only Ginna and Corri ran away from home. We were found in fields, cities, villages, simply anywhere, and Kitsuna would always approach us as the final evolution of the one she wanted to talk to... I really never understood that," he chuckled. "I guess it just made us trust her more... Of course when the tricks were gone, we didn't trust her completely, but she isn't a bad pokemon. She wouldn't hurt us on purpose or anything..."

"She's scary," Baby thought. "But somehow she seems fair too. But her speaking manner is so confusing to me."

The newborn observed what was around him, not letting go of Perro's arm. It was his first night and it just seemed terrifying. The tree branches, although had leaves, still were edgy and sharp. Most of them just looked like huge fingernails. The shadows that spread because of the big moon were making Baby imagine many frightening sights. He hanged onto Perro's arm even more.

"Oh, right. I think you are more interested in why we are patrolling. Silly me," Perro scratched his head with a big grin. He must have thought that the holding on tighter was Baby's way of getting attention. "You see, this area was always wanted by humans. This forest is beautiful and it occupies a lot of land, but people want to get their city's bigger and want to demolish our home. Obviously, we can't let that happen, so we patrol and stop any human activity. Kitsuna sends out a pair to patrol during the day and two pairs split the night. I think Corri and Puru were out during the day. Our leader herself goes to do missions, either in the day or the night and stops anything suspicious with her tricks. She was off alone this time, because she said none of us were worthy to go. Heh, I'm happy I'm worthy now," he smiled proudly. "Someday, you will be able to go too. This will be my first mission so I can't really tell you anything from my experience. Sorry."

Baby wanted to say that it's ok, but his mouth couldn't let any words out. He started feeling depressed. The creepy night he saw didn't help either.

"Isn't this beautiful," Perro sighed. "Look at the sky. The clouds are like paint on a canvas. And the moon is so big and is shining so bright today..."

The little Patrat paid more attention to the ground than the sky and only saw the scary things, but when he added the calm and beautiful sky, everything just seemed to get harmonized. It wasn't so scary anymore.

"Listen, do you know how to climb trees?" Perro inquired and got a head shake back. "I see... If we see some humans, I'll have to manage to get us both to safety. Well, I think you won't be too heavy," he smiled. "Alright, we're near the edge, we can turn to another direction now. And uh... Baby... your grip made my arm go numb."

Baby let out a high pitch sound out of the surprise and embarrassment and quickly jumped away from Perro.

"Wow, so you know how to... uh... squeal? Or shriek? I'm not even sure what that noise was," the older Patrat laughed. "So that means that you have some voice. It's just a matter of time before you begin speaking. But you seem bright. Even without talking you could do many things."

"You thinks so?" Baby raised his eyes to Perro. He hoped for both things the scout pokemon said. But only then he thought that he doesn't really need the gift of speech to live... During these hours of his life he thought it was something everyone has, so he should have it too and without it, he was something abnormal, but that's not the case. Perro doesn't seem to think that Baby is something worse because he can't speak. Finally, Baby's mood brightened.

"You're a cute little thing, aren't you," Perro smiled. "You could use those eyes on missions, to make people pity you," he laughed, but seemed to like his idea too. "Hey, listen. The patrol isn't really good when we can only walk together... I would tell you to go to an opposite direction to where I'm going, but... you can't really give me a signal, if you see some humans... Could you do that shriek, or whatever, again?"

"What a strange request," the younger scout pokemon thought, but tried his best. Yeah! He did it! One sound he can let out.

"Thank Arceus you can repeat it," he laughed. "Otherwise I would feel too guilty to let you go alone. I'll still feel guilty to let a one day old pokemon walk in the night alone, but it's not that long till daybreak. I think you'll be alright. Shriek as loud as you can, if you spot something wrong, alright?" Perro stopped explaining and waited for a nod from Baby. He gave it pretty quickly and the Patrat smiled. "He doesn't seem afraid one bit," "So go straight, until you reach the end of the forest. It won't be hard to do. Then come back. I'll try to cover the rest of the forest. Good luck," Perro patted Baby on the head and ran in the opposite direction he pointed Baby towards to.

The little Patrat also turned around and started walking, but without someone close, the frightening sights came back. At least now Baby knew that he just needed to look at the sky and find harmony once more... Still it was scary for him to be alone.

The sky gradually got back the light it had lost to the night. The little scout pokemon was happy to know that the sun is still there and that it will rise soon enough. He wondered how far he should go, because the forest just seemed never ending. He hoped Perro would just find him and bring him back to the cave.

"Alright! Quiet now! We don't want to enrage the Trickster!" someone shouted ahead of Baby.

"If you say to be quiet, then why are you shouting?!" another voice answered just as loud.

"Shush! Everyone just shush!" the voices just didn't seem to end.

"Those have to be the humans that want to occupy this forest," Baby understood and sneaked in closer, hiding behind the trees.

At least ten people with yellow strange hats and a yellow and grey huge thing next to them where standing just next to the edge.

"All right! Let's start! Is the mulcher ready?"

"Everything seems to be in order!"

A strange sound came from the thing a human was sitting in. It was like destruction, a very quick one.

The thing quickly moved towards one tree and it just broke off, just like that. The thing seemed to only touch it and the tree was gone.

Baby knew what he had to do. He turned around and shrieked as loud as he could and as long as he could. The whole forest echoed and even the sound from the thing stopped.

"We've been spotted!" one of the human's shouted. "Go find out who shrieked just now. Capture it and we'll make it a hostage!"

"Alright! I need two more men! Let's go!" another one shouted and when two others came to him, they went towards the forest and towards Baby.

They seemed furious.

Baby immediately got drenched in fear and started backing away, but he broke a stick on the ground on his way and the sound pinpointed his location to the ones that wanted to catch him.

"There! I think that's a Patrat!" he was spotted.

"Alright! Catch it before it runs away!"

"Come here little pokemon. We won't hurt you," their words didn't seem to be proven by their body language and cold tone.

Baby breathed in deeply and shrieked once more. That sound made the men cover their ears and Patrat could finally find the courage to run away, not looking back.

But the humans were fast creatures with huge steps. The little newborn was no match for them.

"Get away from him!" someone was jumping from one branch to another above Baby. The light brown creature, although not understood by humans, still startled them, especially when he jumped on one of the closest to Baby and bit hard with its front tooth.

...But it didn't have an effect. The human just gulped down the pain and started shaking his arm, in which Perro's tooth had sunken in. After a few seconds the shaking worked and Patrat first was flung towards the sky and then painfully landed on the ground.

"Filthy Patrat," the human growled while checking the bite. "Ha, didn't even pierce the skin. Pathetic!"

Perro was hurt, but was still conscious and it showed how his face darkened from the insult.

He jumped towards the human once more and now his tooth began to glow. Another bite and this one finally let blood out, but Perro was weaker now and he was especially easy to shake off. The male came up to the scout pokemon and kicked him so hard, he flung to a tree.

The angry human approached Perro, to give him a harsher beating, but other humans stopped him, saying it's not worth it. The male just smirked and spit onto the Patrat.

"Alright! Catch both Patrats and lets get back to work!"

Baby was even more terrified. The humans seemed like monsters to the little Patrat. His scared eyes ran from Perro, to the human that wanted to capture him. Now there won't be any saving. Now he's on his own, but he wants Perro to be alright too.

Baby jumped away from the human and ran with little jumps, straight to the older scout pokemon. The saliva from the human was on Perro's cheek and Baby wiped it off with his arm, although it became wet, it seemed it was better, than having Perro take all the shame.

"B-baby...What are you doing?... Run..." Perro whispered painfully. It was clearly hard for him to breathe.

"I'm not leaving you here," Baby thought confidently and got Perro's arm on his shoulder and tried to carry at least half his weight, but for such a small pokemon, it was quite impossible.

The human was getting closer, but slowing down his tempo, so that he could pounce with less expectation.

"You have to run, Baby... Bring back help... I will be alright..." Perro started struggling and tried to get out of Baby's grip, but the pain couldn't let him move too much.

Baby should have listened to Perro. He was too weak. The newborn fell from the weight of the pokemon he was trying to save.

"Hey! Did you see that?! The one that wasn't even hurt couldn't carry his little friend even a few feet!" a loud laugh followed the resentful tone.

The human that kicked Perro returned with an ugly smirk. He grabbed both Patrats by the scruffs on their necks. Perro had no strength to struggle, but Baby struggled like his life depended on it... Maybe it did.

"Oh just quit it already!" the human started shaking Baby, but that just made the scout pokemon struggle even more. "I said quit it!" a little pokemon was thrown to the ground with amazing power. Baby felt so much pain that he couldn't move, just like Perro.

"Is this normal strength for humans or am I just weak?" he thought. Now only thinking didn't hurt.

Baby hoped it was over, but he remembered what happened to Perro. He flinched from the thought, even though he couldn't move anyways.

*swoosh*

Baby was flung far from the kick. He felt the inside of his body being destroyed little by little. At least he didn't hit a tree.

As he was lying, his face was turned to the humans. The so despicable and disgusting human was still holding Perro. He was shaking him and laughing creepily. He turned Perro's head to Baby with a tight grip with his fingers.

"See that? You didn't protect your friend, just like he didn't protect you. What a perfect duo," he laughed resentfully and loudly.

"Enough!" Perro was finally fed up. "You evil humans will not triumph here! I will protect Baby and defeat you all!" although he seemed to just be shouting his name many times for the humans, they understood the creature got some furry. The one holding him even seemed to be a little bit frightened. "Let me go!" he growled to the one holding him and struggled enough to fall to the ground, but before he touched the grassy surface, a light broke out from his body.

What? Patrat is evolving!

End of the Scout pokemon.

Continuing in Watchog.

And that was my master plan to bring this story to the next chapter ^.^

Please don't try to find logic why a just hatched pokemon knows about the world, can walk, etc. I didn't find how old does a pokemon have to be to know these things, so I made him like that from the start ^.^ He was still quite helpless.

Review ^.^ And thank you to all my reviewers. I would say you don't know how much this means to me... but I think everyone does here, where lack of reviews can extinguish a true talent.
