It took Addie 13 rooms before she finally found the one her dad was in. There were doctors all around him and each one of them held grim expressions on their faces. They were all so focused that none of them would even noticed Addie was there until she tried to push past them to see her father.
"Daddy! Daddy, don't die, daddy, you can't die!" She screamed at her dad desperately and clung to the side of his bed. A few doctors swore at her for getting in their way and another one just shook his head with pity.
A nurse standing by touched Addie's shoulder. "Are you this man's daughter? Your daddy will be okay, you just have to let the nice doctors do their job, all right?" Addie protested when the nurse picked her up, and she kept trying all the way to the waiting room where Hughes was talking with doctor Lambert, the man that was there when she woke up. Despite all her attempts at wriggling free, she was so tired from running all around and recovering from the accident that it was of no use. In the end it was decided that Addie was well enough to be discharged into the care of Maes Hughes while Roy was hospitalized.
Hughes attempted to be cheerful, for Addie's sake, but he was too shocked by Roy's sudden accident that even his smile was unconvincing. When the two got to the apartment, they were welcomed by Gracia, the often bragged-about wife of Hughes. Almost instantly the previously unconvincing smile was convincing again and all his worries about how Roy would fare were assuaged.
Addie watched the family with sour feelings. Why were they allowed to be happy, while she was standing right there suffering? In that moment, Addie felt something she had never felt before- envy. With these kinds of thoughts as her only company she was sent to bed.
Tap. Tap. Tap. There was a bird at the window. It had green feathers and violet eyes. Addie recognized it as soon as she saw it. "Mr. Shiny!" She opened the window as fast as she could and let the bird flutter into the room. It flew out her bedroom and waited for her at the front door of the apartment. Addie dutifully followed the green-feathered creature, and continued to do so all the way to an old park that was nearby. She always seemed to end up in abandoned places when Mr. Shiny was involved.
The bird landed on a swing and then the very thing that Addie had been waiting for happened. The light was as speedy as always and in mere seconds Mr. Shiny was back to the palm-tree form that Addie so admired. He looked at the small girl with complete and utter disbelief.
"You…you really have no sense of self-preservation do you?! I swear you'll be murdered before you even reach twenty!" He laughed at his own amusing thoughts.
"What does 'self-preservation' mean?" That made him laugh even more.
"HA! Well of course you wouldn't know. You did just follow a BIRD to an abandoned park in the middle of the night.
"But I knew it was you! That's why it's okay, because that's what best friends do when they're friend is sad." Addie ran to the swing and attached herself to Envy's arm once again, unaware of the murderous atmosphere caused by her actions.
"I am NOT your friend, let alone your BEST friend! How many times do I have to tell you this?" He wasn't even sure why he was putting up with this pipsqueak. He had seen the accident, not because he had been following her or anything, and just wanted to make sure she was alive…for…for future sacrificing and bait purposes…yeah, that was the only reason. And he only took her to the park because well, no…not even he could come up with an excuse for that one. God damnit! He was turning soft!
"But," Addie climbed off his arm and settled down on his lap, "you're my only friend so that automatically makes you my BEST friend, right?"
"No! Like I LITERALLY JUST SAID, I AM NOT YOUR FRIEND, let alone your best friend!" his outburst almost caused Addie to fall off his lap. Normally he would have just let it happen, but his reflexes betrayed him and she was quickly secured on his lap by his arms. She was just like a teddy bear and Envy couldn't help but wonder if her head would pop off if her squeezed her tight enough. He didn't test it.
Addie looked up at her companion. She had been crying again. "Mr. Shiny, why don't I deserve a happy family too? Everyone else…they all have at least someone to be happy with. I thought I did too but now Mommy is gone and Daddy might be taken away from me too. Did I do something bad?" To any other person, Envy would have said yes and the preceded to fill their head with self-hating thoughts right before cutting it off, but this was Addie, not any other person.
Instead, he just said "Trust me, I know how you feel."
Addie leaned on his arm. "Mr. Shiny, I love you, and that's why you can never leave me all alone like everybody else does, 'Kay?"
Fuck. Now he was never going to get rid of her…
