Chapter 11
Shadow's P.O.V.
I ran around the corner to see the bright light of the flames. I ran faster than my feet could carry me. I should've gone with her…
I halted to a stop in front of the barricades that were just put up around the burning building. The firemen were trying their best to keep nosy people back. They weren't going to stop me though. I saw other people being recued from the burning building, but I couldn't find Amy.
"Has anyone seen a pink hedgehog? Amy? Amy Rose? Has anyone seen Amy?" All I got were shakes of the head or a no or a sorry. The last fireman came out and coughed. The ceiling of the building slowly caved in.
"No one else can be seen sir. It's too dark and dangerous to search at this time," the fireman reported. He nodded.
"We'll hose the building immediately, but there's only so much we can do. Thank you sir."
"Captain," the man nodded before quickly walking away to the truck. I walked over to the Captain.
"Look, my partner is inside that building. You have to find her," I said to him. He sighed.
"I'm sorry sir, but we can't go in there. It's an unsecure location. We can't enter. We'll let you know if we find your partner." I stepped back slowly.
"No…" I looked back at the building as another part caved in. I reached for the red pendent around my neck and closed my eyes.
I looked at my dad as he placed the necklace around my neck.
"It was mom's. I wore it to remember her, but I know she'd want you to have it." I smiled and nodded.
"Thanks dad."
"Don't ever forget something my boy. Protect those you love. You never know when the last time you'll get to talk to them, hold them, hug them, or kiss them will be. If you stay loyal to your friends, the good times won't end. Your mother always told me that." I smiled and nodded.
"I promise I will dad."
I opened my eyes. I wasn't about the watch that building come down on her. I ran away from the Captain and toward the side of the building. Having black fur and being a quick runner definitely helped me out here. I ran to where our loading dock was. I searched around quickly. I was afraid to touch the door since it was metal and would more than likely be extremely hot. I grabbed a crowbar that laid on the ground by the door. I went to work with the bar. I hacked at the door until there was enough space to crawl into.
Hoisting myself up, I climbed inside and laid low. I coughed because of the sudden smoke intake my lungs suffered. No, I couldn't stop here. I inched myself along the floor with my elbows pulling me forward. I scanned the floor of our station for someone pink. Not seeing anything, I got myself to my hands and knees and kept crawling and coughing.
"Rose! Rose, can you hear me?" I yelled and coughed. No response. A part of the roof fell right next to me, making me jump and wince as my fur was lightly singed by sparks. I continued to crawl through the darkness of the smoke, only illuminated by the glow of the fire. Finally, I saw her. I instantly crawled faster to her. I rolled her onto her back and placed a hand over her heart. Thump, thump…
She was alive! I felt a surge of relief flow through my veins. I reached one arm under her back and another under her knees and picked her up as I stood fully. It was getting hard to breath, and I was getting lightheaded. I held her tightly and ran toward the hole I'd made in the door. I crouched down and swung my legs out first so I was sitting on the ledge with Rose in my lap. I slid down and onto the ground, gasping loudly. New York's air had never tasted so good.
The firemen were busy hosing down the building still. Rose's phone and wallet and my laptop were safe in the safe. I didn't bother thinking about going back for them. Not wanting to draw attention to myself and the fact that I'd just broken the law, I slowly snuck away from the scene and decided to just carry her back to the room. It was only around the corner; I could see the room from here.
*.*
I placed her limp body onto the bed. I took off her boots and socks and let her soot-filled quills down. Her face was dusted with soot, and her clothes were another story. I placed pillows behind her head to keep her upright, and I went to work on getting the ash off of her. First I worked on her arms, one of which had a second-degree burn on it. Fortunately, that looked like the worst of her wounds. As I finished cleaning the soot off her face, she began to whimper and almost shake in her sleep.
"Rose? Rose, are you ok? Wake up Rose…"
I calmly walked over to the vault that I mistakenly left my phone and purse in. Stupid me…
As I knelt down and started to put in the combo, a loud shriek echoed in the room.
"Everyone out!" I didn't have time to think. A loud, large explosion blasted throughout the room. All I could see was orange and black. I coughed and tried to locate where I was in the building and which way I should walk. The building was on fire instantly. I looked up from the ground and gasped- big mistake. I took in a lot of smoke, and kept coughing as I saw the flames before my eyes. There was no way I was getting through there.
I ran back to the loading dock door for our station. As hard as I could, I rammed my side into the door, earning myself a burn on my arm and hoping it would give way.
It didn't.
I began to panic. Did they know I was in here? I had no way of telling Shadow what was going on; would he come for me? What a cruel fate, passed on through my family: death by flames.
It was getting hard to breath. I coughed louder and more often. I started to walk back to the entrance, but stopped after the sound of screams. I looked up to see the roof coming down. I backed up as the debris fell right in front of me. My head was spinning. I collapsed on top of the freshly fallen roof and kept coughing. I began to think of my parents. I wish there was something I could've done. This fate is a million times worse than I ever thought it was. I heard another part of the roof collapse somewhere else in the building, and I saw bright yellow jackets running not too far from me. Firemen maybe? I'd never know; I didn't have the strength to call for help or reach out for a hand. I began to drift off and accept my fate…
I screamed and sat up in bed. Where am I? Is this heaven? How did I get here; didn't I die?
I looked to my right. Shadow was curled up in a ball with most of the blankets, looking adorable but exhausted. My burn on my arm had been wrapped and treated, and my skin was almost soot-free. I was much more fortunate than my parents were.
Not wanting to wake Shadow, I slowly got out of bed. It was dark outside, well, as dark as New York gets at night. I looked at the clock; 12:00 midnight. I was still in my now blackened work clothes. A shower was starting to sound nice. But when I started to walk, I was a lot weaker than I remember being, and I collapsed with a thud. Shadow sat up immediately.
"Rose?"
"Shadow?"
"Oh thank god," he hopped out of bed immediately. Shadow ran to my side and knelt by me. He pulled me to my knees and threw his arms around my waist. I wrapped my arms around his neck. He held me tight as I started to feel the tears come. "I thought I lost you."
"I thought I lost you too," I said quietly through silent tears. He pulled back ever so slightly, but still holding me tight. He kissed the spots on my cheeks where my tears fell. I smiled.
"You are never allowed to go anywhere without me again, you hear me?" Shadow asked me with a smile and a bit of a laugh. I smiled and laughed and let the tears continue to fall. He let his arms fall back into his lap, which left my waist feeling very cold. Shadow put one arm behind my back and one arm under my knees. He picked me up and placed me back on the bed. He lied down next to me and wrapped an arm around my waist. We continued to smile at each other until I caught his eyes wandering. He caught sight of my clothes and frowned. "You'd probably like to get the soot off," he said, slowly looking up at me. I didn't want to leave my spot. I was so content I didn't wanna move. But he was right.
"I probably should." He smirked.
"Well we can't have my girl looking like this, now can we?" I gave a confused look to him but smirked. He got up and picked me up with him. I threw an arm around his neck as he walked toward the bathroom. He leaned me over the tub. "Mind doing me a favor and turning on the water?" I reached out and plugged the tub before turning on the water. He sat on the counter with me on his lap as the tub filled up. He ran a hand through my quills and kissed my forehead, leaving his hand tangled in my long pink quills. "I was so scared I'd never see you again."
"Mmm. Thank you for saving me, Shadow." He rubbed his nose against mine affectionately.
"Anytime pumpkin," he answered. I couldn't take it anymore. I crushed my lips onto his, taking him completely by surprise. I loved him more than ever. He gripped my waist with no mercy, making me moan when he licked at my teeth. I licked back when he gave me a chance to. We broke off only for the need of oxygen. I panted with him, desperate to refill my body with air. He kissed my cheek and hopped off the counter with me. "Perhaps we'll talk once you clean up." He left me on the edge of the bathtub and walked out, closing the door behind him. I knew I had already made up my mind.
He was mine. No one else was allowed to have him. Just me.
I am now totally dragging this out. Sorry. I'm working hard!
