Chapter 11
Unwanted Feelings
Alec was walking to his desk in history class when he heard Woolsey call out to Magnus from the door way. Instantly, his heart raced and he couldn't bear to look at Magnus and instead, just listened.
"Hey, I've been meaning to talk to you! What happened after the assembly? Did you go and get drunk again?" Alec heard him ask. There came a guilty laugh from Magnus and he said,
"I must have, I don't remember a damn thing. I just remember waking up to Camille's annoying voice. She was pissed that I left the assembly without telling her." Magnus said with an irritated voice. Alec's heart dropped to the bottom of his stomach in disappointment. I don't remember a damn thing. Those words echoed in his mind and burned him to the core. He thought perhaps Magnus would have remembered that kiss. But Alec knew he was too drunk to remember, that was the reality. He didn't know why he was getting so upset. They weren't even going out, and it was just a kiss. A trivial kiss that was forgettable. Suddenly, being in the same room with someone who didn't care or didn't remember something important as a kiss became unbearable. It was a sickening, annoying feeling in the pit of Alec's stomach and it was times like these that made him hate his sexuality. Of course, he would never change, but it was difficult to find love, almost sad and pitiful.
The blue eyed boy didn't bother putting down his things and instead stormed out the room. For a brief moment, his shoulder bumped into Magnus', but he wouldn't look up to meet his eyes. He mumbled an apology and stalked down the hall ignoring the rude comment Woolsey remarked about his behavior. Alec walked to the back of the school where it was quiet, cold and deserted. He threw his bag onto the cold pack dirt and rubbed his face.
The crisp air was refreshing it distracted him from the dull throb in his chest. For some reason, Alec wanted to cry but he focused on pushing the tears back. He kept reminding himself that there was nothing special going on between them and that he didn't have to feel attached to Magnus. They had no history. There was no spark, no interest going on. It took a few more convincing thoughts before he was able to regain his composure and allow himself to be in the company of others. With on last sigh, he picked up his bag and slung it over his shoulder and headed towards the library where he would stay for the rest of duration until his next class. Alec made his way back to the main building and began ascending the stairs to the third floor where the teacher's offices and the library was at. Alec opened the grand door and nearly jumped when the face of Magnus suddenly appeared.
"Oh good, I was looking everywhere for you. Are you okay? Where'd you go?" Alec took a step back in confusion.
"Wha- what are you doing here? Don't you have class?" Magnus raised an eyebrow.
"I should be asking you the same thing. Come on, I got to talk to you." The older boy said stepping out of the library and motioned Alec to follow. They walked down the corridor to the stone bridge that led to the east wing. Magnus stopped to peer out into the view and Alec followed his gaze towards the city.
"So what did you want to talk about?" Alec asked suddenly feeling uncomfortable being near Magnus. The older boy turned around and leaned against the wall and crossed his arms over his chest.
"You always get right to point don't you?" He noted. Alec shifted from one foot to the other. "Do you have somewhere to be?" Alec gave him a look that told the other boy to mind his own business, and Magnus raised his hands in defense. "Anyway, since you left so abruptly and rudely, might I add," Magnus said rubbing his shoulder where Alec had bumped him on his way out. "It was a short class. Hodge just reminded us our exam date then he gave a brief summary of our project and he assigned us partners." Magnus said prolonging the last word.
"You mean to tell me I'm partnered up with you?" Alec exclaimed. The green gold eye boy grinned from ear to ear.
"Yeeeeup!" He said popping the P at the end. "But we're not going to be working on it until after break, for now, we need to decide on a topic." Great, and here Alec thought the semester couldn't get worse, he was wrong. He was going to try so hard to avoid the president of the school. He wanted to remain invisible for the rest of the year. Magnus peeled himself from the wall and stood in front to the blue eyed boy and frowned.
"You seem distressed that you're working with me." Alec shook his head but didn't say anything. He found the ground suddenly interesting to look at, anything but Magnus' eyes. "Did I do something to offend you? You weren't this closed to me before." Yeah, you kissed me, then forgot about it. Alec took a step back and hit the cold stone wall. He was a mouse trapped in.
"It's not that, it's just, your always socializing and if we are going to be working together, we need to get things done and on time. I just don't want to be held back." Alec didn't know where that came from but there was a hint of hurt on the other boy's face. It looked as if Alec had slapped him across the face. Magnus took another step closer to him.
"Held back," He echoed. "I can assure you I am capable of doing work. And I'm hurt that you have little faith in me Alexander." The closeness was heart pounding and Alec didn't like the feeling. It frightened him and irritated him because he was forced to recall the moment in the club room where they had kissed. Alec made himself look tall and boldly took the final step forward so that their faces were inches away from each other.
"Okay first, it's Alec," He said in a low voice. "And two, I have no faith in you so don't get in my way." And with that, he bumped Magnus' shoulder, except this time, it was on purpose and walked back towards the main building, leaving the older boy to gap after him.
Jocelyn watched as her daughter Clary Fray socialized with the Lightwood family. Over the course of weeks, she has grown to be comfortable around them. Especially the blond boy. Jace. She had an uneasy feeling towards him. The boy was reckless Jocelyn decided as she observed him. He did things on his own account whether it affected others or not. She knew and understood his intentions were good but she didn't want Clary taking on that kind of attitude or mindset. Perhaps it was the motherly instincts acting up; the control to keep her daughter safe from getting her heart broken.
After she dismissed the class, Jocelyn pulled her daughter to the side.
"How are your studies going?" She started, trying to break the ice. Clary gave her a funny look.
"Its fine mom, I'm studying."
"Really, because I've noticed you have been hanging around Jace a lot." Clary sighed out loud.
"There's nothing going on between us. And what's wrong with being with him?" She defended.
"Nothing, but when was the last time you were with Simon?" Jocelyn countered.
"Simon has been really busy with the Drama club. Raphael asked him to come in earlier and they end really late. It's not a big deal okay. We hang out when he's not that busy so you don't need to worry." Clary said walking away. Jocelyn grabbed for Clary's arm before she made it to the threshold of the door. "Just, be careful around Jace okay, I don't want you to be with him so much." Clary glared at her.
"You can't tell me who I can and can't hang out with." She snapped and stormed off. The woman groaned and mentally slapped herself. That was not what she wanted to happen. When was she ever going to say something right to her daughter? As she began to close the door, a hand shot out of nowhere and stopped her. She gasped and saw a familiar face that terrified her. "W-what are you doing here?" She breathed. The boy grinned and let himself. He shoved his hands into his pocket and glanced around the room at all the art pieces.
"These are quiet extraordinary." He observed. "I can tell which your daughter drew." He said pointing to each one that was Clary's.
"Johnathan you-"
"It's Sebastian. I am Sebastian now remember." Jocelyn would never be able to call him that.
"You've kept quiet until now, why?" She asked, not bothering to say his name because she simply couldn't.
"Because I feel threatened. As her brother, it's only reasonable that I would be concerned with whom Clary gets close to." The boy said, leaning against on the tables and crossing his arms over his chest.
"What about Simon, you don't seem to have a problem with them going out." Jocelyn said flatly. Sebastian waved a hand dismissing the issue.
"He is of no threat, there is no chemistry between them."
"You don't know that, Simon loves Clary, they've been friends since childhood."
"True, but the question you should be asking yourself is: Does Clary love Simon, in that way?" He added after a second's hesitation. "You see it too, it's on your face. You know Clary does not love him but rather Jace." Jocelyn felt vulnerable and frustrated that she couldn't be composed before her only son. She hated the fact that he had some grip on her and made her feel weak. She was uncomfortable that he already knew so much about Clary and hat worried her. Clenching her hands into a fist, she forced herself to look into the boy's eyes.
"What Clary does is none of your concern. You stay away from her." She had expected him to smirk and threaten that he wasn't leaving but his eyes went dark, almost pitch black and he stalked up to her, challenging her.
"You shamed me because of what my father did and you ripped my sister from my life. You abandoned me and forced yourself to forget that you ever had me. Clary has the right to know just what kind of mother and wife you truly are and she has the right to know who she belongs to."
"Belongs to, my daughter does not belong to anyone, especially not you!" Jocelyn barked.
"Do I not belong to you, mother? Am I not your son? Do you disclaim me?" The woman froze, her heart beating painfully in her heart. Of course she loved him but she was afraid. She couldn't bring herself to claim him as her son. "If you don't tell her, I will." And with that, he turned and walked out of the room. Just then, Luke walked in and when he saw the look of horror on her face, he was at her side instantly.
"What happened?" He demanded. Jocelyn was too shocked or move or speak. Was she a horrible mother? Was it wrong to be frightened of the man she once loved and then disclaim the son she bore for nine months? She didn't know and she was confused.
"Do me a favor, look after Clary for me, please." She pleaded looking into his eyes. Luke put an arm around her tenderly.
"I don't know what happened, but you know I have. She's like a daughter to me and I won't let anything happen to her, I promise." Jocelyn dropped her head on his shoulder and took several deep breaths. Just knowing that Luke was there, with his arms wrapped around her, she felt safe and assured. No matter what happens, she would protect Clary.
