A/N: To answer your question, no I wasn't sucked away into a portal of nothingness. Life got in the way, but I was able to come back and finally finish this up. ENJOY!
Katie learned a long time ago that her dreams could be more than just dreams. And at first, yes, of course if freaked her out that she'd see something occur in reality that she'd witnessed in a dream. And yes she did almost hyperventilate the first time she turned on the television to see the news reporting on a death that occurred hours after she'd had the exact dream. That's when she realized that she couldn't see the things she did and didn't at least try to figure them out. She was obviously seeing them for a reason, and hopefully that reason was to stop the bad things before they happened.
Which is why she was confused by her current dream. She found herself standing in the middle of darkness, which in itself made her feel uneasy. There was light that filtered in from high windows that at least gave her a clue to where she was. It looked like an old barn. She took a step forward hoping something would jump out at her.
"What's going on here?" she muttered to herself as she continued to scan the area for any signs of life. She suddenly stopped when she heard the sounds of footsteps shuffling around her. She looked around but couldn't see much of anything. "Hey, if you're out there, just some out!" She rubbed her hand across her stomach as the feeling of anxiety only seemed to get worse.
"Alright first things first, I need to see" Katie says before turning. "Darkness disappears, come light settle here" she recited and soon a light seemed to fill the room, finally giving her a good look at where she was. The sudden light was a bit bright at first as she held up her arm to block it until her eyes adjuster. She suddenly heard what sounded like a moan followed by the sound of sucking. Blinking her eyes a bit Katie realized she was alone. Across the barn seemed to be a group of people all huddled together, their heads down. She took a step toward them, but stopped when one of them lifted his head and she was able to see his blood covered face, and his sharp fangs as he wiped his mouth.
"Vampires?" Katie said to herself as she realized just what she was witnessing. This was a nest and they were feeding. Taking a deep shaky breath, Katie found the courage to move closer to see if she could at least get a look at the victim. She soon came to a spot that gave her a good look at who were the current meals of these vampires and her heart nearly fell out of her chest.
"No!" she screamed. She tried to go to them, to stop what was happening but her feet seemed glued to the floor. "No" she shook her head. She turned back forced to watch her friends slowly dying in front of her. "This is not supposed to happen!" Katie wrapped her arms around herself as she closes her eyes. She couldn't watch this, she just couldn't. "They can't be dead, I was supposed to—" she opened her eyes back to the scene, this time the vampires were gone, leaving Sam and Dean both lying lifeless on the floor, blood still gushing from their bodies. "I was supposed to stop this" She closed her eyes trying to will herself to wake up.
Katie almost jumped out of her skin when she felt a hand touch her shoulder. Her eyes snapped open to see Dean sitting beside her in the backseat of the impala. She looked over to Sam who also looking back to her with concern. She turned back to Dean whose hand still rested on her shoulder.
"What—" She ran a hand over her eyes trying to stop seeing the images from her dream. "What happened, why are we stopped?"
"You looked like you were having a nightmare" Dean said and Katie raised her head to see him still looking at her with worried eyes. "You were mumbling in your sleep, I just—" he cleared his throat. "We just wanted to make sure you were ok"
"No, I mean yeah" Katie said shaking her head. "I'm fine, it was just a bad dream" she sighed the images still playing in her head. "A really bad dream"
"Uh—" she turned to Dean. "Did you want to talk about it?" that gained him confused looks from both Katie and Sam.
"Uh, no not really" Katie replied and she saw Dean let out a sigh of relief. "Let's just go" Dean nodded before slipping out of the back seat and back in the driver's seat before taking off.
"You know it's pretty late, we should probably just bunker down for the night" Dean said glancing up to the mirror to get a look at Katie. She stilled looked a bit shaken from her nightmare and for some reason he just wanted to make sure she was alright.
"Dean, really I'm fine" Katie sighed closing her eyes and letting her head fall back against the seat. "This backseat is comfortable enough"
"I wasn't saying it wasn't" Dean replied. "I happen to know that from experience"
"Why did you have to tell me that" Katie said with a groan as she opened her eyes. She slid forward in her seat. "Seriously I didn't need to hear that" she stood as best she could from her seat. "Scoot over"
"Hey!" Dean complained getting hit by Katie's foot as she climbed over the seat. "Driving here, your life is in my hands" he heard her chuckle as he turned to see her settling between him and Sam. "That doesn't help anything, the front seat was even better"
"Aw Dean!" Sam and Katie both groan and Dean just erupted in laughter.
It was morning when they all walked into yet another random diner. They found a booth away from the other patrons.
"I'm going to the bathroom" Katie said with a yawn.
"Yeah, well don't get lost" Dean said and Katie merely waved off his comment as she turned and headed from the bathroom. Dean kept an eye on her until she was out of sight, only to turn to see his brother staring over to him. "What?"
"Nothing" Sam said before reaching into his bag and pulling out his laptop. Dean turned spotting a newspaper left in the booth behind them and snatched it up and began reading.
"Can I get you boys anything to start?" the waitress asked sitting down a couple of menus.
"Water will be good" Sam said looking over to the woman.
"Alright, two waters—"
"Three" Dean interrupted and the waitress and Sam looked over to him. "Our friend is in the bathroom"
"Alright, three waters it is" the waitress said before turning to get their drinks.
Sam was typing on his laptop when he looked up to see Dean sliding the third menu across the table next to him. Dean lifted his eyes to his brother who was giving him yet another look.
"What?" Dean asked. Sam simply shook his head before looking back down to his computer. Dean just muttered something under his breath before looking back down to his newspaper. They heard footsteps and looked up to see Katie walking over to them. "Nice trip?"
"The best, even got hit on" Katie said as Dean looked up to her. "Cute guy too, got his number" she said pulling out the slip of paper. Sam looked up to see the look in his brother's eyes that only seemed to show up when she talked about other guys in any way. "So one of you two clowns going to move so I can sit, or should I go find my mystery man and join him for breakfast" Dean stood to his feet and moved out of the way so she could sit. "Thanks" Katie slid into the seat and Dean slid in next to her. He watched as she looked down to the number before balling it up and tossing it behind her. He brought his glass of water to his lips hoping it hid the smirk on his face.
"Alright Dude" Dean said looking over to Sam as he sat his glass back on the table. "Not a decent lead in all of Nebraska, tell me you found something"
"Are you bored Dean?" Katie asked looking over to him and he turned to her and smiled.
"As a matter fact, I am princess" Dean replied as if she were insinuating a way to rectify his problem. He knew she wasn't, that she was just messing with him, but it never hurt to dream.
Sam lifted his head to look over to Dean and Katie to notice yet another one of their looks. Their looks seemed to change over time. They seemed to be saying everything they refused to say with their mouths with their eyes. Dean and Katie turned to Sam, both becoming aware that he's watching.
"Yeah, so—" Dean says clearing his throat. "What do you got?" Sam looks back down to his laptop and shrugs.
"Well, I've been scanning Wyoming, Colorado, South Dakota" Sam replies reading from his screen. "Here, a woman in Iowa fell ten thousand feet from an airplane and survived." He looks over to Katie and Dean who both shrug.
"That sounds more like, 'Hey, that's incredible, then Twilight Zone" Katie said with a yawn, this time Sam and Dean looked over to her, noticing just how tired she looked.
"Yeah" Sam said after a moment before looking down to his laptop again.
"Hey you know what we could do" Dean said and both Katie and Sam looked over to him. Dean's ideas rarely made any sense to anyone other than Dean. "We could, uh—we could just keep east. New York upstate" Katie rolled her eyes because she knew what he was getting at. "We could stop by and see Sarah again huh?" Sam sighed just looking back down to his computer. Sarah Blake was the art deal they'd met during their case with a weird painting in New York. Sam and Sarah seemed to hit it off. "She's a cool chick man—smokin" Katie looked over to him with a quirked eyebrow and he just shrugged and nudged his head toward Sam. Dean turned back to Sam who was still looking down to his computer hoping it would get him out of this conversation. "You two seemed pretty friendly" Sam looked over to Dean to see his brother twitch his eyebrows and Sam chuckled. "What do you say?"
"Yeah" Sam said shaking his head before looking down to his computer. "Maybe someday, but in the meantime we've got a lot of work to do Dean, you know that" Dean rolled his eyes as Katie let out another yawn. They both looked back over to her and she gave them a small smile.
"Sorry" she replied before looking over to Sam. "What else do you got?"
"Uh, Manning, Colorado—a local man by the name of Daniel Elkins was found mauled in his home." Sam said reading from his laptop.
"Elkins?" Dean asked and Sam and Katie look over to him. "I know that name." Dean said pulling out his dad's journal.
"Doesn't ring a bell" Sam says before continuing to read from the article. "It sounds like the police do know what to think" he continues to skim the article. "At first they said it was some sort of bear attack, and now, they found signs of a robbery"
"Alright so we should go looking for Yogi" Katie says laughing to herself. Sam looks over to her and shakes her head. "Hey, that was funny"
"No it wasn't" Sam replied and Katie glared over to him.
"Was too—"
"Hey" Dean said interrupting them. "Check this out" Dean hands Sam the journal, to a name their father had wrote.
"You think it's the same Elkins?" Sam asks handing the journal to Katie. She looked down to see the name and the number scribbled under it. She realized that even after all this time, she hadn't really read their dad's journal. It was something they kept really close to them, something she knew not to ask them about.
"It's a Colorado area code." Dean says as Katie hands him back to journal.
"I guess we should go check it out" Katie replies followed by yet another yawn. "Excuse me"
"Ok, how about me and Sam check this out and you get some sleep" Dean says looking over to Katie's irritated expression. "Seriously the yawning it's annoying and you get all crazy when you don't sleep"
"I do not get crazy when I don't sleep" Katie replied before turning to Sam. "Sam, do I get crazy?" Sam just held up his hands, hoping to be left out of this conversation before he ended up with w tail. Katie shook her head before turning back to Dean. "Look, I'm fine, some more coffee and I will be good as new"
"Well sorry princess, no negations here" Dean replied and Katie shook her head. "When we get to Colorado, me and Sam will check out Elkins and you will get some sleep" Katie sighed as she turned away from him. "Got it" Katie turned back to him about to protest and give him a piece of her mind for giving her yet another order, but in truth, she really was tired. It's what happens after bad dreams, she just doesn't want to go back, so she tries to go without sleep for as long as she can. She realizes that's easier done when she's alone and not with these two watching her every move.
"Fine" she says shaking her head. "And stop calling me princess" she nudges him in the side with her elbow and he looks down before nudging her back.
"We've been through this princess" Dean said and Katie turned to him. "I will hit a woman" Katie chuckled.
"You could try" Katie replied giving him a slap to the arm.
"You know what—" Dean turned to her fully prepared to make her regret that last move.
"Guys!" Sam says before they cause a scene. They turned to him with yet another look he's come to recognize. It's the look he gets often. The look like they forgot he was even there. "Remember how we're supposed to act in public"
"Yes dad" Dean and Katie both say and he glares over to them.
"Funny" he mutters before looking down to his computer.
The next night Dean and Sam tracked down Elkins place and decided to do a little recon without Katie, despite her protests that they may need her. But Dean was adamant about her getting some rest and in the end she lost. Dean and Sam had scoped the place out before deciding to finally go inside.
"Will you shut up already" Sam whispered over to his brother as they walked up to Elkins door.
"I'm just saying how often do I win arguments against that woman?" Dean asked. "I would just like a little recognition that I won" Sam only shook his head before turning to the door. After picking the lock Sam popped the door open and both brothers quickly walked in.
"Looks like the maid didn't come today" Dean said looking around at the mess. There was a little bit of everything everywhere, like someone was looking for something.
"Hey!" Sam said and Dean lifted his eyes to his brother. "There's salt over here, like right outside the door."
"Do you mean like protection against demons salt?" Dean asked and Sam looked over to him. "Or uh oops I spilled some popcorn salt?" Dean turned when he spotted something on the man's desk.
"No, it's clearly a ring" Sam said standing up straighter. "You think this guy, Elkin, was a player?"
"Definitely" Dean said holding up a journal.
"That looks a hell of a lot like dad's" Sam says walking over to get a look at the journal.
"Yeah" Dean replied as he flipped through the pages. "Except this dates back to the sixties"
Katie feels her heart beating rapidly in her chest as she finds herself back in the darkness of the barn. The fact that she was back meant that this was one of those dreams that was more than just a dream. But this dream in particular she knew just couldn't happen.
"Fine I'm here them give me something!" Katie snapped as she heard movement around her. She recited the spell and she was able to finally see. Her eyes looked up to see the nest of vampires feeding. "I don't want to see this again" she muttered but her feet were moving despite her feelings. And as expected there they were Dean and Sam both hanging lifelessly as they are fed on by the vampires. She turns her head, the sight making her sick, but someone catches her eye in the corner of the barn away from the others. He was feeding on someone as well. Katie turned and took a step able to catch a glimpse of the victim and she brought her hand over her mouth when she did. She'd never seen the man a day before in her life, but his features were undeniable. "Their father" It was Sam and Dean's father John. "No!" Katie yelled bringing her hands to her hair. "This can't happen, they don't die like this!" she looks between the fallen bodies of her friends and their father. "They don't die like this!"
Katie quickly sat up from the bed, her breathing erratic as she places a hand over her heart. She still didn't want to give the dream to much credit. Especially since there have been no signs of the dream coming true. Katie slid to the edge of the bed so her feet could touch the floor. It's also something she always did after a bad dream, touch the floor It made her feel safe. It somehow reassured her that she was back to reality that everything was real now. She ran her fingers through her hair trying to stop seeing the images from the dream again. Katie lifted her head as she caught the sound of a familiar engine rumbling. She let out a sigh of relief, even she didn't know she was holding.
Dean was the first one inside, and he is also the first to catch sight of Katie who was sitting on the edge of the bed. He could tell from her eyes that she'd had another nightmare, but he didn't ask her about it.
"shouldn't you be sleep?" Dean asked as he walked past her to the couch on the other side of the room.
"I was" Katie said standing to her feet. "And now I'm awake" she looked over to Sam who had a book in his hand. "What did you find over at Elkins'?"
"Well Elkins was a hunter" Sam said walking over to Katie. "We found this" he handed Katie the journal and she flipped through it.
"It uh—" She looked over to Sam. "It kind of looks like your dad's."
"Yeah, well that's not all we found" Dean said and Katie looks over to him. "The place was a wreck, whatever attacked him didn't come alone" Katie turned away from him, her mind drifting back to her dream for some odd reason.
"Hey" Dean said placing his hand on Katie's shoulder. Katie turned to him snapping from her thoughts. "You alright?"
"Yeah, I'm fine" Katie said with a nod. "I'm just thinking, trying to piece these things together you know?" she turned and took a seat on one of the beds. "You guys find anything else?"
"Uh, yeah a slip of paper" Sam said and Katie looks as he pulled the paper from his pocket. "It's a combination to a post office box"
"Alright, we you two can check that out tomorrow" Katie said looking between the brothers. "And since I miss today's field trip, I'm going to head over to Elkin's place to see if I can figure out what we're digging into here" she looked over to Dean who looked as if there was something on his mind. "What's up?"
"Nothing, it's just we've already looked over Elkins' place, there's no need for you to go there" Dean said. "You coming with us to the post office seems to make more sense, right?" Katie looked over to him with confusion and he just looked over to his brother. "Right?"
"It would if she didn't have the ability to see things that we couldn't" Sam said with a shrug. He knew the reason Dean didn't want her to go off alone. It was the same reason he never liked them splitting up. He worried about her.
"Yeah, I know that, it's just—" Dean shook his head. "You know what, whatever do what you want" Dean only tossed up his hands before going over to lay on his bed and flip on the television.
"And on that note, anyone hungry?" Sam asked.
"Now that you mention it, I am starving" Dean says causing Katie to laugh. "Something funny?"
"No" Katie replied looking back to him. "It's just, when aren't you starving"
"Hey, give me the keys" Sam said before this turned into one of their things.
"Fine" Dean says reaching into his pocket and pulling out his car keys. "But one scratch—"
"Dude, I know just give me the keys" Sam said. Dean shook his head before tossing his brother the keys.
"One scratch Sammy!" Dean called to his brother who was already out the door. Dean turned back to the television, flipping through the channels until he found one that he liked.
"What the hell is this?" Katie asked looking at the television and Dean sighed.
"So much for a quiet night of television" Dean muttered and Katie turned and sent him a glare. "It's monster trucks, you know that big truck is going to crush those cars"
"I know what it is dumbass" Katie said turning back to the television. "Why are we watching it?"
"Oh, because I have this" Dean said and Katie turned to see the remote control in his hands. "And this is the power"
"Ok" Katie said with a nod before turning back to the television. Dean doesn't know why, but that 'ok' just made him suspicious. They sat in silence for a few moments before Katie stood from her seat on the bed and walked around to sit next to Dean. Dean glanced over to her wondering just what she was playing at, but all she did was fold her arms over her chest and lean back against the bed. He felt her arm brush up against hers and he tried to move away slightly. They sat there in silence for a few more moments, Dean deciding to just focus on the television and not the beautiful woman sitting dangerously close to him. The quiet was nice until the television station changed. Dean looked down to his hand and realized that the remote was gone. He looked over to Katie who waved it in his face. "Looks like I have the power now Dean" Katie laughed before moving to make a run for it, but Dean wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled back down to the bed.
"Give it back" Dean said and Katie shook her head no as she slipped the remote under her back. "Well then you asked for it" and suddenly Dean's fingers danced over her sides causing her to erupt in laughter.
"Dean... stop… stop" Katie said in a fit of laughter. "C'mon this isn't fair" Dean didn't give up as he continued tickling her.
"Who has the power princess?" Dean asked not even noticing that her shirt moved up a bit and his hands were now against her skin. He finally stopped and looked down to her, both out of breath. "So, do you give up?" Katie squinted her eyes up to the man above her a smile growing on her lips and Dean could've sworn in that moment his heart literally skipped a beat.
"Never" Katie breathed.
"Have it your way then princess" Dean said his fingers finding the sensitive spots along her sides. Katie hadn't laughed this hard in a really long time, she was actually thinking she might pee herself if he didn't stop and so…
"Fine, ok!" Katie yelled but Dean continued. "I give up!"
"What was that?" Dean asked leaning his face in closer to her.
"You heard me jackass" Katie said her chest rising and falling with every breath as she looked up to Dean only now realizing the position they were in. How close they were in this moment. His green eyes were looking down to her with a look she hadn't seen before and before she knew what she was doing she bit her bottom lip. Dean hand slid her waist, his eyes looking down to her lips. There was no way he could just stop this. The truth was he didn't want to. There was only one thing her wanted to do in this moment. Dean's lips smashed into Katie's in a kiss that seemed to top all kisses. Dean felt Katie arms wrap around his neck pulling him even closer as her legs wrap around his hips. They both knew what this was. This was months of feelings they tried burying, just spilling out and neither one would stop it. At this point neither wanted to stop. Dean's lips moved down to her jaw and down to her neck. Katie's eyes closed biting back the moan that threatened to escape her lips. The action seemed pointless as the soft moan passed through her lips as Dean's hands seemed to move and squeeze places on her body that hadn't been touched in quite a while.
The sound of the familiar rumble of the impala's engine seemed to bring them back to reality as they pulled away, both breathing erratically as their eyes on each other silently praying for the same thing. More time.
"We should—" Katie nudged her head toward the door that would be opening soon. Dean didn't say anything for a moment, but seemed come back quick and with a nod he moved off of her, letting her slide of the bed. Both instantly missed the warmth of the other as they got further away. Katie quickly sat at the table lifting open the laptop as Dean slid back on the bed. They looked at each other for a moment before the door swung open and they were forced to look away. "There you are with the food" Katie closed the laptop and stood to her feet walking over to help Sam with some of the bags in his hands.
"Yeah" Sam said sitting the bags on the table. He looked between Katie and Dean and they looked weird.
"I'm going to get cleaned up" Katie said before turning and rushing off to the bathroom. Dean stood from the bed and walked over to his brother.
"Am I missing something?" Sam asked looking over to his brother who was already digging in bags.
"Nothing" Dean said looking over to his brother. "You just have the best timing ever" Sam looked over to his brother confused waiting for him to elaborate. Dean simply shook his head before going back to getting his food.
The next morning Dean was awaken by sound of knocking on the door. He opened his eyes and looked over to Sam who wasn't budging. Dean groaned as he sat up from the bed and headed for the door. He opened the door to Katie standing there her back to him.
"Finally, you—" Katie turned to see Dean. Correction a very shirtless Dean and she seemed to forget what she was about to say. She looked back up to see a smile on Dean's lips and she shook her head realizing that he'd caught her checking him out. She turned back to look in his eyes. "Uh, I thought I would get an early start on this Elkins thing, and thought you guys should probably do the same"
"Yeah" Dean said with a nod. Katie stood there for a moment wondering if he would mention the previous night. When it seemed like their awkward silence was only getting longer and even more awkward Katie just simply nodded. Maybe he thought it was a mistake. Hell maybe it was a mistake. Something he wanted to forget.
"Right, later" Katie said before turning and leaving. Dean stood there and watched until she was out of sight, mentally kicking himself. He should've said something, but the truth was he didn't know what to say. He was never good with words and big moments. He just needed more time to figure out how to handle this.
"Hey" Sam says and Dean turns to his brother whose sitting up from the bed. "What time is it?"
"Time to get up Sammy" Dean says grabbing his shirt and slipping it on.
On their way to the post office Sam looked over to his unusually quiet brother. He figured something happened last night that neither one of them were talking about.
"Hey, so I know this may seem a little random" Sam said and Dean glanced over to his brother. "But did something happen last night?"
"What are you talking about?" Dean asked keeping his eyes on the road of him.
"Nothing, it's just last night you and Katie seemed freakishly quiet" Sam replied looking over to his brother. "Which was weird in itself seeing as you two can never just be quiet, something always starts your annoying bickering" Dean shook his head. "And then there was the fact it seemed like she couldn't wait to leave last night, like she wanted to be anywhere but in our room"
"She's a girl, girls are weird" Dean said still not looking over to Sam.
"Ok, look I'll understand if something happened last night that you don't want to tell me about" Sam said and Dean nodded. "But please make sure you don't something stupid"
"What are you talking about stupid?" Dean asked glancing over to his brother.
"Just—" Sam shook his head. "I don't know, this is Katie" Sam said hoping his brother understood what he meant. He'd seen his brothers with lots of women and seen how he treated some of them. "She's—"
"I know" Dean interrupted looking over to his brother. "I know"
At the post office, Sam and Dean found a letter that was marked for someone with the initials, "J.W" Both brothers had the same suspicions seeing as they only knew one person with those initials. Back in the car both brother look at the letter for a moment, just wondering if they really found some sort of connection to the father they hadn't seen in a long time.
"J.W" Sam said looking down to the envelope as if it were some missing relic. "You think?" he looked over to his brother. "John Winchester?"
"I don't know" Dean said with a shrug. They hadn't heard anything from their father in a while and the fact that he seemed to be a part of their case just seemed unbelievable. Dean looked over to Sam who was still looking at the envelope. "Should we open it?" Sam looked over to his brother and shrugged before they were both startled by tapping on the window. Both brothers turned to see someone they just were not expecting to see.
"Dad?" Dean says as their father opens the back door of the impala and slips into the backseat. Sam and Dean shared a look of both confusion and shock before turning back to John who sat looking between his sons.
"Dad?" Sam asks. "What are you—are you alright?"
"Yeah" John says giving Sam a nod. "I'm ok. Look I read the news about Daniel and I got here as fast as I could" John turns to Dean. "I saw you two up at his place" That seemed to confuse both brothers even more.
"Why didn't you come in, dad?" Sam asked.
"You know why—because I had to make sure you weren't followed, by anyone, or anything. Nice job of covering your tracks, by the way." John said turning back to his youngest son. He could see the look of skepticism in Sam's eyes. He thought by now that look would be gone, but even after everything there were still issues between him and his youngest son.
"Yeah, well, we learn from the best." Dean said with a proud smile on his face as he looked back to his dad. He turned back to Sam, who still wore a scowl as he looked back to his father. Dean sighed because he knew sooner or later Sam was going to do what Sam always does.
" Wait, so, you came all the way out here for this Elkins guy?" Sam asked still not understanding how his father was just now making himself known to them.
"Yeah. He was….he was a good man." John said and both brothers could see an emotion they didn't often see in their father. It was a look that showed them that this Elkins guy must have really meant something to him. "He taught me a hell of a lot about hunting, but we had, uh….we had kind of a falling out. I hadn't seen him in years. I should look at that." John looked over to the letter in Sam's hands. Sam looked down to the letter before passing it back to his father. John tore open the envelope and pulled out the letter reading it aloud. "If you're reading this, I'm already dead." John could only shake his head at what he was reading "That son of a bitch."
"What is it?" Dean asks looking over to his father.
"He had it the whole time" John says lifting his eyes to his boys. "When you searched the place, did you see a gun? An antique—a Colt revolver, did you see it?" There was a look both brothers recognized. It was a look their father got whenever he got a lead. John looked between his sons.
"Yeah there was a case, but it was empty" Dean said. "What's it matter anyways" John let out a sigh before sitting back in the seat and finally telling his boys the story of a special gun that they needed to find and who he believed had it. They would be hunting vampires.
Katie walked up to Elkins place, the police tape still surrounding the area. She looked around to make sure no one was looking before she snuck under the tape and ran over to the door. With a wave of her hand the door open and Katie quickly stepped inside.
"Alright, wreck was definitely an understatement" Katie muttered stepping over what looked like a broken lamp. She looked around the place. Someone was definitely looking for something. Katie stopped in place when something caught her attention. It was a smell that seemed to come out of nowhere. Katie closed her eyes bringing a hand to her head as the images of Sam, Dean and their father laying lifeless as blood oozes from their bodies flashes in her mind. That's when she recognizes the smell. "Blood" she says opening her eyes. She looks up noticing another room in the distance. Walking over she notices the scratch marks that are on the door, a sickening feeling seeming to come over her. She tries to shake it off, before she steps into what looks like an office. Everything is tossed about just like the rest of the house, but there is something that seems to catch Katie's eyes. She walks over to the corner of Elkin's office and kneels down to an empty gun case. Katie stares down to the case for a moment, the temptation to touch it seeming to be too much as her fingers find the soft interior of the case. Suddenly the images of people and things she's only read about, of things she believed were myths flashed behind her eyes. Katie brought her hand away from the case and stood up. "Damn" she cursed as she turned back to the office. Despite what she wanted, things were starting to fall into place. Elkins, and the case, and now the ones who now had the case. Her dreams, everything were only pointed to one thing. "Vampires" she uttered finally letting the words pass through her lips. Suddenly she was hit with the reality that her dream and reality were getting way to close together. She needed to find Dean and Sam before her dream did become reality.
She beat them back to their room, which did nothing to calm her. Now she was alone with her thoughts which could be very dangerous. She took off her jacket and found herself pacing back and forth trying to scramble all the information she had so far to see if there could be any other explanation for what was happening. She tried, but fail. All conclusion all came up the same. Vampires. She glanced down at her watch wondering where Dean and Sam were. It shouldn't have taken them long to sneak in and find out what was in that postal box. As if they were reading her mind, Katie heard the sound of the door opening, and soon Dean and Sam walked in.
"Guys, good, I—" her words seemed to get caught in her throat as she saw the man coming in with the brothers. The images of John lying on the ground being fed on by vampires popped in her head at that very moment.
"Katie, good you're here" Dean said looking between the woman and his father. John looked over to the woman suspiciously wondering why his sons hadn't mentioned her beforehand. "This is—"
"Your father" Katie finished and Dean looked over to her. She looked over to him and saw the look of confusion on his face. He was wondering how she knew that. "You have his eyes" she said with a small smile as she turned back to the eldest Winchester who couldn't hide the look of distrust in his eyes. And for a moment Katie remembered who she was and who they were. Those lines of hunters and witches seeming to come back to light as the enforcer of those lines stood in the room. "What are you doing here?" Katie asked despite herself.
"Better question" John says taking a step forward. "What are you doing here?" he looked between his sons. "What the hell is this, is she like a hooker or something"
"I'm sorry, excuse me—" Katie says taking a step toward the man. Father or not, right now she does not feel like being called a prostitute. Dean places a hand on her shoulder stopping her. She looks over to him just as he quickly removes his hand as if he done something wrong just by simply touch her.
"Dad, what—" Sam says shaking his head. "She's not a hooker" he looks over to Katie. "She's a friend" Katie gave him a nod before glancing over to Dean who seemed tight lipped all of a sudden. Sam looked over to Dean as well wondering why he wasn't speaking up. "Look we can explain"
"Well someone better!" John snapped looking between their faces before his eyes suddenly landed back on Katie. It was that look in his eyes that made her nervous. She'd been around hunters like him before, the ones who knew what they knew and didn't need to know anything else. He was also their father. And suddenly she realized she was one witch in a room with three hunters and she didn't know what that meant for her.
"Dad, look Sam's right" Dean says finally speaking. He looks over to Katie before turning back to his father. "This is Katie, she's a—" he clears his throat. "she's a friend, and she's been here hunting with us"
"Hunting with you?" John says looking over to his son. "Dean, are you—" he shakes his head. "What was it that I always taught you?" Katie looked between Dean and Sam as they looked to their father and that when she noticed just how straighter they stood, and how focused they were on him as he spokes. "What did I teach you!"
"Never trust anyone" Dean muttered and Katie turned to him. He didn't look at her. He wasn't sure he could stand to see the look in her eyes.
"Never trust anyone!" John snapped before turning back to Katie. "We live in a world where pretty faces could be more than just pretty faces" Katie scoffed as she shook her head. "What do you know about her huh—" John looked between his sons. "How do you know that she isn't here to kill you?" John turned back to Katie. "What were you thinking?" he looked over Katie and she noticed his eyes going over her body only making her even more nervous. "You know what scratch that, I know what you were thinking"
"Dad, it's not like that!" Sam argued, but John wasn't hearing it.
"Then tell me what is it like, because I can not see any reason why this—" he pointed his hand to Katie. "This—"
"Sir, before you finish that sentence, let me just say—"
"Listen honey" John says his voice going dangerously low. "This conversation is between me and my sons, so please do us all a favor and just shut up" Katie's eyes widened as she gaped at the man.
"He's their father" she thought. It was that thought that saved this man from getting punched in the nose. Actually it's that thought that kept the man standing in front of her alive. She had to stay quiet, because at this point the only words that would come out of her mouth would not be very lady like at all. She looked over to Dean wondering if he was really going to just stand there and let his father speak to her like that. Her question was answered by his silence.
"Dad, that's enough" Sam said once again coming to Katie's rescue. She turned to him and he gave her a sympathetic look. "She's not a demon" John looked over to Sam who looked like there was more he wanted to say. But he left it there.
"Ok, she's not demon" John says before turning back to Katie. "So what are you then?" the way he said it made her sound like a thing rather than a human being. Sam and Dean remained quiet knowing the moment their father knew who she truly was all hell really was going to break loose.
"Look dad—"
"I'm a witch John" Katie says not brothering with pleasantries such as "sir" and "mr" anymore. "I'm an honest to god potion mixing witch" she shrugged her shoulders. "I'm actually pretty sure if I put my mind to it, I could fly on a broom" John stared over to her wondering if she was just messing with him, but the looks on his sons faces told it all. They were nervous.
"You're kidding me right?" John asked and without a word Katie waved her hand making the books that were lying on the table float a couple of feet in the air. She dropped her hand to her side, letting the books fall back on the table with the thud, just as John's gun aimed right at her.
"Dad, no" Sam says stepping in front of his father's gun. "Put the gun away, because it really won't help" John looked up to Sam before shaking his head as he slipped his gun away.
"Someone talk now!" John snapped. Katie opened her mouth, but he held up a finger toward her. "Not you, you—" he shook his head before turning to Dean. "I want you to speak now"
"Dad, I know what you're thinking, trust because we were there a year ago" Dean said glancing over to Katie. "But she's good, and I know how that sounds" Dean turns back to his father. "A good witch isn't something we hear about all that often, but here she is" Dean looks over to Katie who looking back to him. "Here she is and she's good and she's saved us more times than I can count" Dean turned back to John whose face seemed to get ten more shades of pissed.
"Did you really just say a witch Dean?" John asked before holding up his hands. "I'm sorry, that's right, "A Good Witch" John shook his head as he ran a hand over his face. "You boys—" he couldn't believe that they would fall for something so stupid. "I taught you better than this!" he looked over to Sam who refused to meet his father's gaze. "Hunting with a witch?" she turned to Dean who turned away from the disappointment in his father's eyes. Katie looked between the brothers seeing that power their father seemed to hold over them. Katie turned back to John who was looking back to her. "You do not hunt with witches, you hunt witches" Katie felt her fist clench as she swallowed hard.
"He's their father" she thought again. She had to keep saying it, because she knew soon enough who he was really wasn't going to matter too much longer.
"And so this is what happens" John says. "She's leaving right now" both Sam and Dean turn to him about to protest but he holds up a hand to stop them. "That is an order" four simple words seem to turn Sam and Dean both into daddy's little soldiers, because after those words are spoken, no one says anything. Katie looked over to Dean who seemed to be looking anywhere else but her.
"You know what" Katie says turning and picking up her jacket. "Fine, I mean this was bound to happen anyways, right" she looks over to John. "Oh, John don't know if you will care or not but I've always wanted to meet you, you know see the man behind these guys and I have to tell you, you're nothing like the man I thought you were. You my friend are a world class ass" she took a step toward him placing herself right in front of him. Sam and Dean move a little closer knowing that both their father and Katie are unpredictable and this situation could get even more out of hand. "I am good, I don't need to prove that to you because I know it in my heart and so does your sons" she shook her head. "At least I thought they did, at this point I'm just standing in a room with strangers" she turned around to Sam and Dean and just shook her head before turning and storming out of the door.
"Katie!" Dean called after her and she scoffed as she kept walking. But he caught her arm and she stopped but she didn't turn to look at him. "Please look at me"
"No" Katie replied. "Right now I don't know who you are and I don't want to look at you" the words felt like a kick to the gut. "Just let me go Dean, we wouldn't want daddy to come out here and see you fraternizing with the enemy, would we?"
"Just—" Dean says and she feels his hand slide down to her hand. "Just don't go too far" she feels him give her hand a gentle squeeze and despite how angry she is at the moment she turns to him. She looks into his eyes and he hopes she can just see all the things he wants to say, but can't. Not right now. Katie gives him a nod before letting go of his hand and turning and walking away.
Dean sighs watching her leave once again today. This time he could only hope that he would see her again. Right now he couldn't imagine not seeing her again. He turns and walks back into the room where his brother and father both look over to him, both wearing the same expression. Disappointment.
"You know what" Sam says and they look over to him. "I'm going to take a shower" and without another word Sam storms into the bathroom letting the door slam behind him.
"Dean—" John says but Dean holds up a hand stopping him.
"I don't think I can take any more lectures dad" Dean said looking over to his father. "She's gone, so let's just move on ok?" John looked over to his son for a moment before nodding and taking off his jacket. They did have work to do.
True to her word Katie didn't go too far. But if she was honest she knew that she wasn't. She still had her dream slash vision playing on replay in her head reminding her that she had to stop it. So that meant that she wouldn't get too far from Sam and Dean or their dear dad. That meant the joys of stakeout duty. Katie sat in the car that she, "temporarily borrowed" outside of their room. They were not going to make any moves that she wouldn't know about. And so she sat and waited.
She kept her eyes on their door never leaving. Well she left a couple of time on coffee runs to keep her up and focused. Well as close to focused as possible. She did find her mind travelling to the night before and the kiss she doesn't think she could ever forget. She brought her fingers to her lips as she remembered just how soft his felt against hers. She dropped her hand and shook her head. She was dreaming if she ever thought anything would come from last night. It was a fluke she thought. They were just caught up in the moment and things just went too far. That's all it was.
The next morning Katie rubbed her tired eyes before sucking down the last of her eighth cup of coffee. She looked up to see their door swing open and slid forward to see John carrying a bag to his truck. She tosses the empty cup aside as she spots Sam and Dean as well with bags as well headed to impala.
"Alright, where are we going?" Katie asked as she watched them packing up their cars. Once they were done they all got into their respective vehicles and pulled off and Katie was right there behind them. "I guess I am truly destined to stalk you guys" They ended up at a place where there was a lot of flashing lights. "There's been another attack" Katie says looking over to the crowd that were huddled around the police tape. Katie got out of the car, making sure the guys didn't see her as she snuck around back.
Katie walked past a van noticing the police jacket and hat that laid on the seat. She looked around before sneaking into the car and snagging the jacket and hat. Slipping them on, Katie climbs under the tape. She keeps her head down as she walks past John whose talking with one of the officers. She looks around but there aren't any bodies, but there is the smell again. She looked around and though she didn't see any blood, she could smell it. The vampires were here. She turned to see John bending on the ground to pick something up. She wasn't too close, but from where she was standing it looked like a tooth. He stood and she turned her back to him and began walking in the opposite direction. Once she was far enough Katie took off the jacket and the cap, tossing them aside before finding her car. She looked up just in time to see John walking back over to the impala. He's there for a few moments before he's heading back to his truck and their off again. Katie rubbed her eyes as she drove.
"Ok, Katie what do we know about vampires" she spoke trying to take her mind off how tired she was. "Depends on what breed this is" she muttered as she remembered the tooth John was holding. "Two sets of teeth" she searched her mind for what she knew about this specific breed. "That means no stake through the heart, but decapitation which is always fun" Katie lets out a yawn. "Sounds easy enough" soon her car ride is quiet and she finds herself missing their voices. A sudden thought crosses her mind, but she immediately dismisses it. But she thinks about it and figures what the hell. Katie holds a hand over her radio. "Ears of a bat, I call you to settle here, so I may hear what Dean and Sam were saying in there" And suddenly their voices could be heard from her speakers.
"So vampires nest in groups of eight to ten" Dean's voice echoed through her car. "Smaller packs are sent for food." Katie listened as she started remembering some of the information he seemed be reading. "Victims are taken to the nest where the pack keeps them alive, bleeding them for days or weeks" the image of Dean, Sam and John being fed on once again flashed in her mind. "I wonder if that's what happened to that 911 couple?"
"That's probably what dad's thinking" Sam's voice replied. "Of course it would be nice if he just told us what he thinks" Katie glanced down to her radio. Before this Dean and Sam rarely even spoke of their father. She knew the basics, that their mother died when they were young and after that John became obsessed with finding the demon that killed her. They called him yellow eyes but after reading up on him Katie found out his true name. Azazel. And from what she found out, he was an upper level demon, so if John did find him he was going to need more than salt filled bullets to kill him. She also knew that the relationship between Sam and his father was strained and with what little conversations they did have she was able to conclude that Sam and his father weren't really on good terms since he went off to Stanford.
"So it's starting" Dean mutters looking down to the book in his hands.
"What's starting?" Sam asked glancing over to his brother.
"Sam, we've been looking for dad all year." Dean replies looking over to his brother with clear frustration in his voice. "Now we're not with him for more than a couple of hours, and there's static already?"
"No. Look, I'm happy he's okay, all right?" Sam shrugs turning back to the road. "And I'm happy that we're all working together again." His voice was laced with a bit of sarcasm but Dean just shook his head.
"Good." Dean said looking back in his book
"It's just the way he treats us like we're children." Sam says and Dean sighs realizing that this conversation just wouldn't be over. "He barks orders at us, Dean, he expects us to follow him without question. He keeps us on some crap need-to-know deal." Sam looks over to Dean. "I mean look what happened with Katie, I mean he barely knows her, but that didn't matter" Dean sighed turning to look out the window. Neither one of them had spoken or seen Katie since last night, but he knew she wasn't too far. "She's been here with us Dean, helping and he didn't even give her a chance before he was kicking her out." He glanced over to his brother. "And we just let him"
"He does what he does for a reason" Dean said shaking his head. "Plus Katie will be fine" it's more what he had to tell himself than his brother. He hated separating from her, because she always found trouble. Plus even though it has only been a couple of hours since he last saw her, he missed her. "Once this is all over we will find her and everything will be ok" Dean nodded to himself. That was the plan once this is all over they would find her, show their dad that she's harmless and get back to them.
"Sure Dean if that's what you gotta tell yourself, because if I were her I wouldn't speak to either us ever again" Sam shook his head as he looked to the back of his father's truck. "He does these things and he just expects us to just follow him blindly, what's the reason for that!"
"Our job!" Dean snapped looking over to his brother. "There's no time to argue, there's no margin for error, all right, it's just the way the old man runs—" Dean ran a hand over his face. He knew how is father operated and knew that it got results, saved lives, so yeah he would trust him.
"Yeah, well, maybe that worked when we were kids, but not anymore, all right?" Sam said with a firm nod. "Not after everything you and I have been through, Dean." Sam glanced over to Dean. "After everything we've seen, I mean, are you telling me you're cool with just falling into line and letting him run the whole show?" Dean just gave a slight nod and Sam shook his head before turning back to Dean. "Alright, then are you just ok with the fact that he won't see Katie the way we see her and because of that he will never see working with her as an option" Dean sighed. "So can you follow him if it means never seeing her again" Dean turned away from his brother afraid he would see a truth even he wasn't sure about yet. "C'mon Dean, enough with crap, I know how you feel about her, can you really just turn away from her because dad says so?"
Katie looked down to the radio for a moment just as interested in the answer to that question as Sam. She'd always know that she had feelings for him, feeling no matter what she did would just never go away. And yeah, she'd caught Dean looking at her longer than a friend should or the fact that he seemed to be seeing less women in the past couple of months. But she figured it was just him being Dean, not that they were signs of feelings he may have had before. Suddenly little things started making sense, looks as slight touches that she thought meant nothing, may if fact meant a whole lot of something. She turned back to the radio realizing that Dean still hadn't answered his brother's question.
"Can you do that Dean?" Sam asked and Dean turned to his brother.
"If that's what it takes." Dean replies knowing the words were a lie the moment they passed through his lips. He wanted it to be true, to believe that if he had to he could just give her up, give whatever was happening with her up, but he didn't think he could do that. Sam shook his head before turning back to the road ahead of him.
The words seemed to hurt far more than Katie imagined. Especially since they hadn't even explored whatever the hell was happening between them before he was deciding that if need be he would just give up on it. Her mind traveled back to the kiss and she shook her head. It wasn't just a kiss, she knew that the moment it happened. There were feelings in that kiss. Feelings that didn't just go away before daddy said so. She sighed as she ran a hand over her tired eyes. She just hoped Dean had the courage to not let his father end something before it even started.
Dean's phone rang and he snaked it out of his pocket quickly, a small part of him—or maybe a large part of him hoping that it was Katie. He looked down to the caller ID a little disappointed that it was his father.
"Yeah, dad" Dean answered. Sam glanced over to Dean who listened to his father's instructions. "Alright, got it" Dean hung up the phone and looked over to Sam. "Pull of at the next exit"
"Why?" Sam asked following behind his dad's truck as the exited the highway.
"Because dad thinks we've got the vampires' trail." Dean replied his agitation with his brother seeming to get worse with Sam's questioning of everything their father did.
"How?" Sam asked still skeptical about his father's decision making. It felt like he was hiding something from them.
"I don't know, he didn't say." Dean said with a shrug. That seemed to be the last straw, because Sam sped up the car moving past his dad's truck before turning in front, forcing John to come to sudden stop. "Oh, crap. Here we go. Sam!"
Katie furrowed her brow as she watched the impala cut of John's truck. She had to stop a distance from behind them, so she wasn't spotted.
"What are you doing Sam?" Katie asked. From where she was she could see Sam quickly get out of the driver's side of the impala. Dean hopped out of the passenger side after him. John got out of the truck, slamming the door as he stormed meeting Sam. She couldn't hear them from where she was but the way they stood facing each other, it wasn't too hard to guess what this was about. Sam was frustrated with their father and the fact that he wasn't being completely honest with them and he wanted answers. It's when Dean moves to stand between his brother and father that she realizes just how heat this argument must be. The confrontation lagged on a little while longer before Sam and John stormed away from each other leaving Dean there for a moment before he turned following after Sam.
"This is just great" Katie muttered to herself. If she ever planned on preventing her dream from becoming reality, she needed them focused and on top of their game. She was afraid their issues would be a distraction that they couldn't afford.
The rest of the drive was quiet, no one seeming to actually want to say anything that might stir up any more trouble.
The moment they crossed the city lines into Manning, Katie felt nervous. This was where the nest was. Her dream was getting a little too close for comfort and she stilled hadn't found a way to stop it. They were going and she didn't know how to stop them.
Morning seemed to come before she knew it and she watched as the guys drove up upon the barn. Katie got out of the car and walked around a little further, but still able to see the barn. She looked over to Dean, Sam and John who all looked down to the barn as a car pulls up. She could only imagine what was going through their heads as the vampires stepped out of their car into the sunlight unharmed.
Katie closed her eyes and only thought. It seemed simple, but in reality Katie was standing there scrambling all the information, all the facts she had about vampires, about the brothers, even the little knowledge she had about John to think of a plan. She opened her eyes and looked as they turned and headed back to their cars. She knew them, they were bold, even cocky hunters. She also knew what that gun represented. The colt. The gun that could kill literally anything. This was a weapon that seemed to be solution to a certain yellow eyed problem. If they were going to do this then they were going to do what no one would expect then to do.
"They're going to come in through the front door" Katie muttered to herself. She looked back to the barn. The vampires would be sleeping, but it doesn't mean they won't wake up and if they did Dean, Sam and John would be no match. "How do you stop this Katie?" she stood there remembering the words of someone she found she hadn't really known at all. But she knew even after all Gabe's lies some of it was true.
"They're important, to the future of the never ending battle between good and evil" Gabe said. "Which means there will be a lot of trouble headed their way, I need you to protect them"
She wasn't sure what the meant at first. She assumed to just be there, use her powers to get them out of a bind. But what if this was it? What if this is how she would protect them for the great destines she knew they had? She'd only known them for a little over a year and in that time she knew they were great hunters, but she'd also learned they were just great people in general. She believed wholeheartedly that they just had so much more fight in them and it couldn't end here. They couldn't end here.
She didn't quite know what she was going to do, but at this point the end results were clear. They didn't die. That meant she did whatever was necessary to make sure that was happening. Even sneaking into a vampire nest. She found window that she was able to pry open and slip inside. The moment she did, she couldn't help but notice how surreal all of this seemed. As she walked in the exact steps she did in her dreams. The barn was exactly as it was, dark and cold as she took each step cautiously. She stopped when she spotted a few of the vampires, asleep in hammocks around the barn. She closed her mouth and tried to breathe as quietly as possible before continuing her walk.
Katie liked to think of herself as a pretty together person. She'd seen too lets the things she did and the things she saw scare her. But right now as she moved silently among beings who were faster than her and were stronger than her, and given the opportunity would probably drain her of every drop of blood in her body, she was a little scared. She stops in place when the vampire asleep right next to leg moves in his sleep. She waits there for a moment, wondering if now was the moment everything just went to ass. The vampire just turned over, and continued to sleep. Katie let out a silent sign of relief as she continued her search for the reason they were all here anyway. She stopped again when a familiar scent passed by her nose. She turned and saw what looked like a cage and inside were what looked like dozens of people all lying unconscious on the ground, some with punctures to their necks. Katie searches for a way to get these people out, when a scream seems to sound. She lifts her head and the sound of movement lets her know that now is that moment when everything just goes to ass. She turns back to the people, making a silent promise that she would be back for them, before turning and seeing the cold hanging in a holster. She runs over reaching for the gun when someone grabs her by the wrists. She looks up to the sharp teeth of an angry vampire.
"Would you believe me if I said I was coming over to borrow some sugar?" Katie asked and the vampire only growled before pulling her arm up and pulling her against his body before inhaling deeply, a smirk coming across his face. The sight seemed to only confuse Katie but right now there was no time to figure out what the hell was going on, so without giving herself the chance to overthink , she tosses her head forward hitting the vampire right in the nose. The shock of the hit is enough for the vampire to release her and give Katie the chance to grab the hanging holster with gun, hook it to her pants and make a run for it.
"Boys run!" she hears John's voice yell when she stops dead in her tracks as she ends up standing behind the group of vampires that seemed to have gotten Dean, Sam and John cornered. Without a second thought Katie reaches up a hand and with a twitch of her wrist all movement in that barn stops. She didn't know how long this was going to last, so she moves quickly around the group of angry vampires over to her frozen friends. She waved a hand toward them and watched as they all stared in confusion at the frozen vampires.
"What the hell is going on?" John asked still not sure what he was witnessing.
"Princess" Dean says looking over to Katie and all their eyes turn to the woman who wasn't there before. "You did this?"
"Yeah" Katie says looking over her shoulder to the vampires. She turns back to the brothers, before looking over to John whose eyes meet hers. "You're welcome" John simply shakes his head and Katie turns back to Dean.
"Hey" Dean says noticing the blood on her forehead. He reaches up a hand to see the damage. "Are you alright?" his hand moves to rest on the side of her face as she gives him a nod. John watches his son, now seeing something he'd hadn't seen before. The way Dean looked at her, reminded him of a time long ago, the way he looked at a certain blonde.
"It's nothing" Katie says placing her hand on his wrist. "I'm fine" she turns to Sam and John who are both watching them. Katie takes a step back so she's facing all of them. "Which is the least I will be able to say for you if you don't get out of here"
"Alright then let's go" Dean said.
"Not without the colt" John says and Katie turns to see the urgency in his eyes. She sees just how important this gun is to him. Katie unclips the holster from her pants and John's eyes widen as he finally sees the object he's been searching for, for so long. She holds it up to him and he looks down to it skeptically, wondering if this is some sort of trick. If she is trying to play him.
"John" Katie says and his eyes meet hers again. "Just take it" John looked back down to the gun before reaching out a hand to take it. Just like that he had and she'd given it to him. She only gave him a nod before turning to Dean. "Now, it's time to go" The guys made a move to the door, but Dean turned to see Katie not moving. "What are you doing, go!"
"No what are you doing?" Dean asked turning to her. "You aren't coming?"
"Dean, I can't" Katie said shaking her head. "There are people in there, locked in cages. I can't just leave them here" she looked over to the vampires. "Plus they won't stay frozen for long" she noticed one of them slightly twitch and she turned back to them. "Just get out of here while you still can"
"We're not—" Dean says shaking his head before turning and taking a step toward her. "I'm not leaving you here, if you're fighting, then we're fighting, we're a team, remember" Katie looks over her shoulder to the vampires, the images of her dream flashing behind her eyes bringing the reality that it still could happen. Katie turns back to Dean who stands there looking at her… really looking at her and it's the looks she's only dreamed about.
"You have to go—"
"No" Dean said cutting her off.
"Yes, because this is what I do, I protect you!" Katie snapped and he looked back to her in confusion. "My dreams, the ones that have made me afraid to even sleep, they were about you" she looked over to Sam and John. "All of you, being killed, being drained by vampires" she pointed to the monsters that were standing just inches away from them. "By them. And I wanted to think it was just a dream, that I just had a really screwed up head, but here we are!" she turned back to Dean. "Here we are Dean, right in the middle of my nightmare" she took a step toward him bringing her so close to him. "And I refuse to let it end with you dead" she looked up to him a tear streaming down her cheek. "I can't let that happen, Dean" she gave him a smile. "Cause you see I love you, and I—" she placed a hand on his cheek. "You know what screw it" and with that Katie smashed her lips into his and she felt his hands wrap around her pulling her against his chest. She wanted it to last forever, but she knew right now the last thing they had was time. She pulled away, Dean's arms still wrapped tightly around her his eyes looking down to her with that look that always seemed to make her knees go weak.
Taking a deep breath she pulls out of his grasp and turns back to Sam who shakes his head.
"Katie don't do this, there's another way" Sam says and Katie smiles over to him.
"There probably is, but right now we don't have the time to find it" Katie replies. "Take care of him, ok?"
"Just walk out of here with us" Dean says and Katie turns to him. "Just come with me, ok"
"You have no idea how tempting that offer is" Katie says before looking between their faces. "Promise me that you're going to give them hell, piss them off, promise me—promise me that you're going great" she smiled trying not to think of how much this was hurting. How much saying goodbye to them actually hurt. "Do it for me, ok?"
"No" Dean grabs her arm fully prepared to do anything, even toss her over his shoulder and walk her out of this place himself. "I will not leave you here"
"And I will not let you die here" Katie whispers before doing what she'd been dreading. She looked between their face once again, before turning to John. "You know I hope this is proof enough for you sir, because if it's not, then you really are an ass" smiled over to him and he gave her a silent nod.
"Princess" Dean said and she turned to him. "Don't—"
"Evil surrounds them, bring them into safety" she began
"Princess, don't do this." Dean urged placing a hand on her shoulders.
"Take them far, take them—" she looked up to Dean's eyes, the last words caught in her throat.
"Princess please—"
"Take them from me!" she yelled and soon bright white lights surrounded the father and his two sons. "Goodbye Dean" she whispered before reaching into his hand and taking his machete. And before she knows it they're gone.
Katie stands for a moment gripping the machete in her hand. She couldn't help but think that this time winging it kind of sucked. She hears movement from behind her and she lifts her head and wipes the stray tears from her eyes.
"Where did they go?" she hears one of the vampires says and Katie turns and shrugs.
"We figured we wouldn't waste all that man power on you" Katie says with a smirk. "I mean I'm sure little ole me could handle you"
"That was a big mistake little girl" one of the vampires says taking a step toward her. Katie looks him over and figures he's probably the leader of this nest.
"I guess we're going to find that out, huh?" Katie replied raising the machete in her hands as the vampires begin moving surrounding her. She spins around looking each of them in their face, their sharp teeth snarling as they look upon her with hunger. To her own surprise Katie lets out a loud yawn and she holds up a finger and the vampires look at her with confusion until she stops and drops her hand back to her side. "Alright, bitches, let's do this" The vampires growled as they started toward her.
Dean, Sam and John stood in confusion as they looked around at nothing but farm land. They stood next to the impala and John's truck in the middle of a road.
"Wisconsin?" John says spotting the sign before turning to his sons. "Why would she send us to Wisconsin?"
"She didn't want to risk us coming back for her" Sam says before turning to his brother who stood there with a look of shock. John looked over to Dean as well before walking over to them.
"Look boys about your friend" Johns says still not sure what to make of her. Yeah she helped them, gave them the missing piece to a puzzle he didn't think would ever be solved. But she was a witch, she was a witch and he wasn't sure if he was ready to believe that there could be good ones out there. "I'm sorry, I'm not sure what—" he shook his head before looking over to his sons. "I'm not sure if what I saw, a witch who—" he sighs still at a loss for words.
"Dean, say something" Sam says looking over to his brother. After everything they'd just witnessed, what Katie had just done, Dean had to say something. Sam couldn't imagine what was going through his brother's head right now. Hell even he wasn't sure how he was feeling knowing that he may have just seen his friend for the last time. But to Dean she was more than that, she wasn't the girl they met in a diner. In the past year she'd became so much more than either of them could've ever imagines and now there was the chance that she was gone. So Sam was sure Dean had something to say, something. "Dean—"
"Let's go Sam" Dean replied suddenly before turning and walking to his car. Sam shared a confused look with his father before following after his brother.
"Go?" Sam asked. "Go where?"
"What do you mean where?" Dean asked looking over to Sam like the answer wasn't obvious. "We're going back to Manning, to get Katie back"
"Dean, we're in Wisconsin" Sam said. He knew it would hard for Dean to accept that maybe there was nothing they could do her. "By the time we even get there she could be—"
"Dead?" Dean finished. Sam only looked over to him and gave him a slight no. "We must not be thinking about the same woman, because my princess, she too damn stubborn to just die" Dean shook his head. "I mean c'mon you've seen her fight right, she's good, she better than good, and a few vamps will be nothing" Sam looked over to his brother and saw the hope in his eyes and figured at this point that's all Dean had left. "Yeah, she's handled worse right, I mean she's probably waiting for us right now, and I don't know about you but I don't feel like hearing her complain about us being late, so get in the damn car Sammy" and with those words Dean got into the impala and started the engine.
John walked over to Sam and placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Go with him" John says and Sam nods. "I know what he's feeling and it's—" John clears his throat as he pushes away the dark memories that seem to haunt him even after all these years. "It's hard to just say goodbye, he needs the closure" John looks down to Dean who sitting ready to go. "Let him get his closure, and you get yours for your friend. And when you do, call me and we can finally find and get rid of this yellow eyed bastard once and for all"
"Alright" Sam says giving his father another nod. "Be careful"
The drive back to Manning was painfully silent. Sam sat glancing over to his brother who kept his eyes on the road ahead of them. After day's drive, they ended up back in the place neither wanted to see again. This time the once secluded barn was now surrounded by flashing lights and crowds of people. Dean and Sam get out of the impala, both noticing the smoky smell that seems to fill the air. Without waiting for his brother, Dean walks a head passing through the crowds of on lookers to see people on stretchers being wheeled into ambulances. He keeps his eyes open for Katie but he doesn't see her at all. He looks over to the barn to see it's chard from a fire as it barely stands.
"This is just way too bizarre man" a guy next to Dean says. Dean looks over to the guy. "Did you hear what happened?"
"Nah" Dean replied shaking his head. "You?"
"Only what I overheard from a few of the EMTs" the guy replied. "Apparently all those people there" Dean turns back to see more people being rolled into ambulances. "They were locked in some sort of cage or something" the guy shook his head. "Said something about monsters locking them up and drinking their blood. Sounds like a bad acid trip if you ask me"
"How they get out?" Dean asks.
"I think they said something about a woman" The guy says.
"What woman?" Dean asks turning back to the guy who looks over to Dean with a look of confusion.
"I don't know, they just said those people said something about a woman saving them" the guy replied. "Which doesn't make much sense, since most of the people I've been seeing have been unconscious" he shook his head as he turned back to the barn. "I mean she'd have to literally carry them out one at a time. I mean what woman could do that?" the man chuckled. "Hell what woman would do that?" the man turns back to Dean whose expression seems to have changed to plain angry in a matter of seconds.
"What about the fire?" Sam asks and the guy looks over to him.
"No idea" the guy replies with a shrug.
"Did they find her?" Dean asks and the guy turns to him. "The woman who saved those people, did they find her"
"I don't think so" the guy said shaking his head. "I mean they've had police scouring the area looking for someone and I figured it was her from the description they were giving, but if she really was in that thing, she might've not made it out with the fire and all" the guy looked over to Dean who couldn't hide the disappointment on his face. "Did you—did you know her?" Dean lifted his head to the man and just gave him a nod.
"Yeah" Dean replied his voice not nearly as strong as he wished it was. He closes his eyes for a moment and let the thought that she was gone play in his mind and something about it, something about it didn't seem right. Dean opened his eyes and just turned and headed back to the impala.
Sam looked over to the barn or at least what remained of the barn and he couldn't believe that she was actually gone. He couldn't believe that she would sacrifice herself for them. He shook his head before turning and going after his brother who he was sure wasn't going to take this well at all.
A/N: I actually added an epilogue so... keep going!
