Sarah: as ya'll have probably figured out by now, I love bashing Stefan. It's just so much fun. So here's another country song that I will use to bash him some more.
Song: The Bed
Artist: Gretchen Wilson, featuring Big & Rich
Album: Here for the Party
Genre: Stefan-bashing should be its own genre.
Pairing: anti-Stefan/Elena, hints of Damon/Elena
Stefan Salvatore smiles in his sleep. He's completely oblivious to how his marriage to Elena Salvatore, once called Elena Gilbert, has been falling apart long before it even began.
Elena, meanwhile, bites her lip to keep her sobs in check as she writes a letter telling her soon-to-be ex-husband everything that he has done wrong in the four long years since that first day of eleventh grade. She's now twenty-one and no longer looks like her doppelganger ancestor while he is still immortalized at seventeen.
Her so-called "perfect" husband stuck true to his vehement refusal to turn her into a vampire in spite of all the begging she had demeaned herself to do. When she signs her letter, she puts "Sincerely, Elena Gilbert". She hasn't used that name in two years, not since their wedding vows were made. She carefully pushes away from the desk so she can leave both the letter and her wedding ring on her side of the bed. She lets her tears fall freely as she takes off the ancient amulet he had given her so long ago. She won't need it after tonight. She sets it on the letter next to the ring.
Then she quickly strips out of the red negligee she had worn in an attempt to catch his attention. It is the very same one she had worn their wedding night, but he didn't even notice. She leaves the negligee on the floor and quickly gets dressed in clothes Damon had gotten her. She slips on an elegant sterling silver ring with a pale blue lapis lazuli gem. She takes one last look at the boy who had let her down too many times. If he had so much as noticed her choice of sleepwear, she would have forgotten all that he had done to wrong her. But he hadn't. It's been more than a year since he last told her "I love you." She knows. She's been counting the days.
Elena takes nothing with her when she walks out of the boarding house. Her purse, her phone, her keys, every picture, every memento he got her, all of it stays behind. She climbs into the front passenger seat of a 1968 Chevy Camaro convertible and buckles up. She doesn't look back as the driver pulls down the long dirt driveway.
"Are you sure you're ready?" he asks as he turns onto the interstate.
"I've been ready for nearly four years, Damon," she says softly. "I'm tired of waiting. If he doesn't love me enough to want to spend forever with me, then he just doesn't love me enough. I've been making the wrong choice for four long years. It's past time to correct that mistake."
"If you're sure," he says, raising his right wrist to his lips. He vamps out and bites down, drawing blood. He then holds his arm towards her. "If you're completely sure, then drink."
Elena doesn't hesitate in latching her lips to the bite and drinking Damon's rich, sweet blood. Once he's determined she's had enough, he pries his wrist from her mouth. "I love you, Damon," she says softly.
"I love you, too, Elena," he replies. "When you wake up, I'll teach you the ways of my kind. I will never let you kill anyone." He rests his hand on the back of her neck. "This will only hurt for a second."
"Do it," she tells him.
Damon uses his fingers to snap Elena's spine. He quickly catches her as her temporarily dead body falls forward. He sets her back upright, a triumphant smirk on his lips. It's been nearly a century-and-a-half in the coming, but he has finally won the girl away from his brother. And, in the end, he didn't even have to do all that much himself. Stefan sabotaged his own relationship with Elena many times over, but most of all by refusing to turn her into a vampire.
Damon continues driving west along the interstate, knowing that it is only a matter of time before Stefan wakes up and finds out exactly what he did wrong.
Six hours later (nearly eight in the morning)
Stefan wakes up to hear birds chirping. 'Another amazing day, I'll spend it with my wife,' he thinks, turning over to tell Elena he loves her. The beautiful day takes a bleak turn when all he finds on her side of the bed is her wedding ring, her necklace, and several pages filled front and back with her distinct handwriting. He picks up the top sheet and begins reading:
Dear Stefan,
I just thought you should know why I felt I had to leave you like this. Well, it's going to take a while to write it all done and explain what you could have done differently. But before I start, you should know that by the time you are reading this, I'll already be in the process of transitioning into a vampire. That right there was your biggest mistake. You just didn't love me enough to want to spend forever with me. These past four years have been the biggest mistake of my life. I had chosen to stand by the side of a man who does not love me in the "forever" way. I have finally woken up and decided that the man who does want to spend eternity at my side deserves a chance. I am giving him that much. And the very first thing Damon will do when we leave Mystic Falls is feed me his blood and turn me. Bonnie gave me a ring. As for what else you did wrong…
