(I've been binge watching M*A*S*H lately. I needed to do a warm up so I decided I wanted to do an army doctor type AU. Set in some undisclosed war in an undisclosed time period. Lara is Royal Army and Sam is American.)
"He can wait." Lara moved from the leg injury, gesturing for an orderly to follow her. "These are all Americans. What happened?"
"Ambush, ma'am. They were completely routed. These were the lucky ones."
Lara pulled back the bandages on a Corporal's chest, rolling her eyes. "How fortunate for them. I'll take her first."
"Take me where?" The woman looked up at her with glazed eyes, grabbing Lara's arm. She had a flirty smile on her face. "I'll have you know I'm as easy as you think I am. Are you busy after the war?"
Smiling, Lara smoothed back the woman's hair, then checked her dog tags. "Well, Samantha. I'm going to be in your chest today, but we don't really have the time to buy you dinner first."
"You can make it up to me later," Samantha breathed, laying her head back and closing her eyes. "...I'll be..okay right?"
"You'll be in very capable hands." A blonde woman leaned over, smirking at Lara.
"Amanda!"
"Flirting with the patients, isn't that usually my job, Lara?"
Lara, what a pretty name. Lara's face was the last thing Sam thought about as unconsciousness claimed her.
When she next opened her eyes, Sam was greeted by a featureless white ceiling. The light was a little too bright, and she groaned, lifting her arm to cover her face. There were assorted tubes, but she felt like she was floating. She lowered her arm when she felt someone sit on the side of her bed.
Lara checked her patient's IVs. "How are you feeling, Corporal?"
" A little sore. Call me Sam."
"Sam, then."
"You have pretty eyes." Vaguely, Sam realized she was hopped up on painkillers, which she didn't want to think about how much it would hurt without them. She took Lara's hand, running her thumb over the doctor's knuckles. In fact, she found herself hyperfocusing on Lara's hands. "How...how about a dance, doctor?"
"You're in no condition for any strenuous activity." Lara didn't take her hand away, and though her words were scolding her tone was light.
Sam smiled lazily. "There goes my plans to drag you into the supply room."
"I, uh. Well. That is certainly off limits while you heal." Heat rushed to Lara's cheeks and she ducked her head.
"You're so cute, Doctor Lara. How about that dance, once I'm better?"
"Pencil me in." Lara gently pulled her hand away, and stood. "Get some rest, Sam. I'll check in on you a little later."
Sam's smile only widened, and she closed her eyes again, a content sigh escaping her mouth. "Best chest wound ever…"
