Sunglasses at Night
Elena lay in her bed, still and quiet. She fiddled with her wedding band on her finger while gazing at a photo of her and Nate at their wedding. It sat in a silver-lined frame and held a photo of she and Nate looking into each others eyes. Elena in her long, fairytale wedding gown and Nate looking dashing in his tux. The smiles on their faces were happy as could be. After all they had endured over the years, they had finally made it to the moment they never thought they would have.
But now it was if all of that was wiped away.
As she ran her fingers along the edge of the frame, Elena began to hear thudding coming from outside her bedroom door. Just as she sat up, the door opened and she saw him standing in the doorway.
"Nate?" she said in hesitation, rising to her feet.
Nate stood there looking in her direction, holding his head. She couldn't tell if he was even looking at her because he had dark sunglasses covering his eyes. This struck her as odd. The room they were in was fairly dark, only one softly lit lamp shone over the room.
Without saying a word, Nate grabbed her and held her tightly. After a few silent moments, he finally spoke.
"Elena." he said softly to her. His voice was low.
Sensing that something wasn't quite right, she broke from his embrace.
"What's going on?" she asked, looking at him in concern. "And what's with the sunglasses? It's after midnight."
Nate took a step back and cleared his throat. "It's this headache. I can't seem to shake it and any kind of lights hurt my eyes."
Elena nodded slowly, not very convinced by his words. Although, she had enough migraines in the past to know that light can be a killer. "Right..." she said hesitantly.
Not a split second had passed before Nate lunged into his next sentence. "Elena, I remember it all, everything. Us, Vergil, Victor. I was finally able to remember." he said, a small smile of relief coming on his face. He then ran over to her and tried to kiss her, but Elena stopped him.
"Wait...did you say, Victor?" she asked him.
Nate looked thrown by her question. "...Yeah that is his name, right?"
"Yeah. You're right." she answered. She thought she was being a little over dramatic. But on the other hand she had never heard Nate call Sully, Victor.
Not once.
"Please..." Nate said to her, walking closer. "Just kiss me."
Elena never could resist him, no matter how hard she tried. It crossed her mind that she was just creating problems when there were none. Nate had been through an awful ordeal and all he really did out of character was call Sully by his first name. So she kissed him and draped her arms around his hard body. Before she knew it her back was against the wall.
As she kissed him something felt wrong. His kiss was different. It was almost as if she was kissing someone else. She took her lips from his and brought her fingers to her lips.
Nate was panting from the intensity of their lip lock. "What's the matter?"
Elena felt herself gulp. She shook her head and laugh with a sigh. "Nothing. I guess I'm just anxious. I've...missed you." she told him.
Nate grinned at her. "I've missed you too." he told her and began to kiss her neck.
Elena slowly slid her left hand down the wall to her nightstand next to her. She reached for the heavy snow globe she kept there. She was hoping to grab it and strike Nate over the head with it. She didn't feel safe. It may have looked and sounded like him but she knew all too well at this point...
This wasn't Nate.
As her arm went down the wall and grazed the globe she felt him grab her arm. Hard. He brought it back up and slammed it against the wall. As her arm made contact, she let out a small whimper.
"Now that's not very nice." He hissed in her ear.
Elena felt her voice shake as she spoke. "Wh-what's happened to you, Nathan?" she asked.
Still having Elena pinned down with one of his arms, he ripped the glasses off of his face. Elena let out a small gasp when she saw his eyes glowing crimson. "I'm sorry." he said in the most evil of voices. "I don't remember."
"I'll scream." she said to him, shaking.
Nate chuckled. "Go ahead. I'll snap your neck right here and then what would become of your precious Nathan?"
Elena was stuck. She didn't know what to do. If she screamed for help, he would kill her right here and if someone was to intervene they may kill him. As much as she feared him in his current state, she couldn't let anything bad happen to him.
"What do you want?" she asked him. "I doubt I have anything of use to you."
"On the contrary." Nate answered. "Your boy got a lead about that chalice he and his fucktards were chasing. I want to know where it is. I know it was moved."
Elena shook her head rapidly from side to side. "I...I don't know." she heard herself lie.
Nate gave her a condescending look. "Lies, lies." he said, running his lips over her neck and began to kiss it again. Elena cringed as she felt this man's kiss on her.
Elena's breathing intensified. "I can't tell you what I don't know." she lied once more. She didn't know why he wanted to chalice, as far as they knew it was just a wild goose chase for something worthless. She wanted to keep him in the dark as long she could.
After her words ended, she heard Nate growl from her neck. He began to bite down on it. She heard herself begin to scream, as much as she fought it. A few seconds later, he suddenly stopped. His eyes met hers. She was stunned to see they were back to normal. He gently grazed the side of her face with the touch that she was used to.
She felt a wonderful reprieve as she looked at him. She didn't know if he remembered her or not, but all that was important was he was back to normal. "Nate?" she said slowly.
Nate looked at her like he was trying to place her. "Elena..." he spoke to her. "Elen-" he spoke again but was cut off by a hard gasp. He began to fall forward and grabbed onto her. She didn't know what was happening.
Once he was on the ground, she saw Sully standing behind Nate and pulling a syringe from him back, and letting out a disgruntled sigh.
Elena crouched down next to Nate and then to Sully.
Sully raised a hand. "Don't worry, sweetheart, it's only a sedative."
Elena brought her gaze back down to him and grazed his cheek with the back of her hand. She felt a wave of relief knowing he was just sleeping now.
"I heard you crying out and I didn't see Nate in his room. Are you all right?" he asked her.
Elena fought back tears from this traumatic experience. She answered with a small nod.
"What the hell happened here, Elena?" Sully asked, looking around at the scene.
Elena looked over at the sunglasses that Nate had taken off of his face. They shattered from the impact from hitting the ground.
"I have no idea." she answered.
**Hey, guys! I just wanted to tell you I apologize for lack of updates lately. Writing fics is very fun, but it can also be a challenge. I want to make sure I give you all the best of my work and sometimes it takes a little longer than others. I'd rather give you all quality over quantity. If you have kept up with me all this time, I cannot tell you how much it means to me. I appreciate your support and reviews. And I assure you every title I start I will finish, no mater what. Thanks so much!
