Memories of You

Ch. 11

"My name… I, um… remember it." Davis said it so meekly that it wasn't a wonder that Dr. Takeda had asked him to repeat what he'd just said again, but louder as he was currently filling out Davis' daily check-up chart to make sure he continued to be in a state of picture perfect health and wasn't really listening. thankfully for him, he continued to improve.

"I...um, remember my name," Davis repeated a bit louder instinctively squeezing his blanket. Dr. Takeda's head popped up immediately from behind his clipboard. "You've remembered something?"

Davis gave a small nod.

Almost instinctively, Dr. Takeda lips broke into a smile. "See, what did I tell you. Patience is key. Believe it or not, the memory can be a rather fickle thing sustaining damage like you have. Enough about that though, would you mind repeating your name back to me just as a test and so I can log it into your chart and log it in later?"

"Y-yeah, sure. Davis found himself letting out a shaky breath he hadn't even realized he'd been holding. "My… name is… Daisuke "Davis" Motomiya. B-But, I like being called, Davis."

It was funny, this was his name no doubt about that, but he'd be lying if he said his own name didn't sound somewhat foreign falling from his lips.

"Good, just great." Dr. Takeda smiled at him. "Well, besides that fantastic news, I'm sure you'll be happy to know that you're once more a picture of quality health." Davis watched silently, as Dr. Takeda rose from the roller chair. "Is there still something on your mind?" Dr. Takeda asked easily picking up on his timid behavior. Davis jumped at being caught what he thought he could easily hide. Then again, Dr. Mori wasn't a doctor for nothing.

"I… also remembered s-something else, it's about my best friend." As Takeda listened to the boys recall of another memory that had been suppressed due to the accident, he couldn't help but notice how his eyes lit up as he mentions his "best friend," he was clear as he said it, the two seemed to share a very strong and unbreakable bond.

"Hmm, is that so?"

"Y-Yeah," Davis' cheeks red with embarrassment.

"Do… you want to see them?"

Davis jumped in surprise once more, he must be really easy to read.

Heh, if only it was that easy.

Davis lips now formed a thin line. Did he want to see Veemon? What kind of question was that? Of course, he wanted to see him. More than anything. So, why did he find himself fighting back a wave of nausea and fear? Maybe because if anything, he found he blamed himself for almost forgetting his "best friend," leaving him to suffer and wonder what's become of him. If he saw him, would Veemon despise him as he'd done in his dream? Or would he want nothing do with him?

These were questions he found that as much as it pained him as a part of him wanted to know, he also found he wasn't ready to face them head on like he'd first thought and so, like the coward he felt he was, he let the words of defeat fall from his lips.

"N-No, I'm fine…" Davis gave a false smile in hopes this wouldn't cause The doctor to pry, which, thankfully, it hadn't.

"Hmm… well, alright," replied Takeda he knew it was best to give Patients their space when they needed it and it could tell Davis needed it, even if he didn't say it.

As Takeda began to walk out of the room, he stopped. "Davis, I'm sure it's possible to set something up, maybe Kari might know and can help get in contact. That's only if you want to though."

"O-Okay."

With that, he left for the day. Davis sighed, "I'm such a coward…" Davis mumbled, his attention now drawn to the window as soft light filtered through.

"I don't know if I'm ready to take those entrance exams," Kari groaned as she and T.K. were leaving the community campus walking to the bus stop. "Kari, you'll do fine. You're pretty attentive in class, besides, so what if history and math aren't your strongest subjects. You're pretty damn good at Japanese and hell, English better than I'll ever be. If you want, I'll help tutor you."

Kari looked at T.K. and smiled, "You'd help me?"

"Of course, what kind of boyfriend would If I didn't help?" T.K. Said.

"Alright." in response to T.K.'s kindness she gave him a kiss on the cheek. "it's settled, after work I'll come get you and we can head back to my place to study, how does that sound?"

"y-yeah, sure," she said. A small blush decorating her cheeks. Even after years of dating going over to T.K. Place still made her blush. T.K. Noticed this giving her a soft kiss in her hair. "I promise, it won't be all studying, I've games and other things we can do."

"Okay."

They made it to the bus stop, thankfully they weren't waiting long as the bus pulled up not seconds as they got there. They boarded the bus sliding their passes through the machine and grabbing seats to sit in. Kari found one in the middle of the bus got slid in first claiming the window seat while T.K. sat on the end.

"You really like window seats," T.K. Chuckles, but Kari's attention is already drawn to the outside as the bus slowly begins to pull off. T.K. Smiles in response. 'yep.'

Eventually, the bus reached the stop close to Kari's work "I guess this is my stop," Kari said as the bus crawls to a complete stop. She stands up maneuvering past T.K. Into the aisle. "Yep, see later. Don't work too hard, okay?" He said giving her a quick peck on the lips as she smiles.

"Bye."

"Bye."

With goodbyes out of the way, Kari exited the bus and made her way to work and T.K. Continued the bus ride home.

There was a soft knock on Davis's door. "c-Come in," Davis said. The door opened and a nurse with a tray of food. "hello, Davis are you ready to eat?" she says looking at him with a soft smile. "i-i.." he felt like saying no, only for His Stomach reach a conclusion before he did.

The nurse giggled at this, "Y-yes," Davis replied. The nurse walked over and gently placed the tray of food on Davis's lap. As per typical what Davis was going to be eating was soup. "soup, again?" he replied, saddened that his choice of food was still restrictive. "yes, but remember your grip is slowly beginning to strengthen, so I think we'll be able to switch to solids pretty soon. Just keep giving it your all!" The nurse replied enthusiastically. This bit of encouragement seemed to be just the push that Davis needed as a small smile began to form on his lips. The nurse was right, he had to continue To push on for himself, for Veemon, for…

He felt his cheeks get warm as he let his mind wander. He stared down at the bowl. The soup was almost yellow in nature, giving him the impression that what he was about to try His best to be scooping on his spoon was most-likely chicken noodle. He must have been looking At the food unsure of what to of it because the nurse then said, "it's chicken noodle," pretty much affirm what he'd originally thought. "Oh, okay, thank you… Uh…" Davis' voice petered out. The nurse giggled once more, "my name is, Tamaki. Most people call me Maki. You can Call Me either or if you'd like. It's funny, I've been with you for a while now and I've never not once told you my name."

"It's nice to meet you, Maki," Davis said smiling. "likewise, Davis. Now eat up, otherwise you're food will get cold."

Davis nodded. It was then that Maki did something that Davis himself was definitely not expecting She grabbed the chair that was resting in the corner of the room a pulled it close to his bedside and and sat Down. Before Davis had a chance to question her actions she spoke, "I hope you don't mind. I know when some guests eat they tend to like have someone in the room, it gives them a sense of normalcy, or at least that's what…" at this point, Davis had unintentionally tuned out her words as he felt his brain tingling.

He blinked.

His hospital room slowly changing to his messy room. 'what in the—'

He blinked again.

It was back to being his hospital room.

He blinked again.

It was once again his messy room and… Maki's soft face, brown ponytail, and soft hazel irises were replaced with bright hazel eyes and full brown bushy hair. "Geez, Davis! Some little brother you are," the girl in front on him sounded annoyed, if not hurt. He immediately recognized him as his sister, but he still couldn't put a name to her face.

He blinked once more still thrown for a loop by this surreal experience. This time, however, nothing seemed to change. His 'sister' was still in front of him."What is—"

"Are you not feeling well?" his sister/Maki comments. "I'll go get the doctor if that's the case," she says getting up.

"I-I…" The words are lost on him as he had no idea what the hell was happening. As he watches his sister/Maki leave he it's as though his lips had a mind of his own.

"W-Wait, J-Jun, don't leave me!" he cried reaching out for her. Tears spilling forth without restraint as the image his mind managed to Conjure of his sister and room began to fade and he found himself back in his hospital room and reaching for Maki who had all but stopped in her tracks and was looking at the teen with worried eyes.

"I'll be right back Davis. I'm just going to go and get the doctor, alright?" She says in a reassuring tone, that she hopes will help calm him down from this random episode he just experienced. When Davis says nothing in response, Maki only sees it as more reason to get help as the door closes softly behind her.

This leaves Davis alone. His hand still outstretched toward someone that wasn't even there to begin with. Eventually, his hand slowly lowers onto the sheets as he begins to grip them softly. While he wasn't really sure what the hell just happened to him, he knew one thing was for sure...

The door opened up, Maki and Dr. Takeda walked back into the room. "Davis are you alright?" he asked as he walked up to Davis bedside. Stray tears slowly streaked down his cheeks. Davis was quiet. "Whatever it is Davis, you can tell us."

Davis eyes brown eyes latched onto Takeda's. Dr. Takeda noticed how they flickered in uncertainty before he seemed well enough to find his voice. "Jun… I want to see my big sister Jun."

A/N: Sorry, this wasn't really a long chapter, but I hope you enjoyed it either way and stay tuned for the next one that I promise will be longer in comparison. Yeah, I don't really have much to say here either. Later days!
