Rain poured down in the darkened streets, lit only by the nearly full moon above. The roads were empty save the creatures that lurked unseen, and this was a night when they would all stay in their places, because Elijah's threatening demeanor and the man he planned to meet were danger enough for the world, let alone a few young vampires or warlocks in this country town.

As Elijah, dressed in his signature black suit and umbrella, strode down to a familiar alley, he could sense the man behind him. He would not turn, this was a man who wanted to know he was in control, and Elijah would oblige if it meant getting his way in the end. As he turned a corner and stepped through a door to the abandoned diner that he used for these occasions, a shadow moved quickly behind him.

"You may come out now, Mikael, I've not been followed." Elijah set down his umbrella and made his way to a table. Mikael came through the back of the diner carrying two glasses of brown liquid. "Bourbon?" he asked.

"I'll refrain tonight, thank you. I propose we get straight down to business, it's not often that I leave my patients and doctors unattended, and despite your obvious charm, I'd like to be in your presence for as little time as possible." He leaned back in the plain, wooden chair as Mikael sat across from him.

"Well, that surprises me considering you've been trying to capture me or be me for the past few hundred years." Mikael retorted with a smirk, but Elijah was not amused.

"What is it that you wish to discuss?"

Mikael rolled his eyes and leaned one elbow on the table. "My son."

Elijah scoffed, "I would hardly consider that term appropriate, you have treated him as just another one of your petty enemies for your entire lives."

"That is because of what he has done, Elijah. He has behaved like a child for his entire, wasteful, pathetic life and I thought he would learn when I freed him of his foolish romance, but he has done nothing for my family to be proud of. He has shamed me, and tried to sever me at every chance." Elijah waved his hand to interrupt Mikael.

"Let's…avoid the dramatics, Mikael. You and I both know you never cared for the boy or considered him a son, and you would kill him gladly with any chance you got. You will not persuade me to tell you where he is."

"Do you think I am an idiot, Elijah? I know he is with you, and I know that he has Caroline back." Elijah's jaw tensed, though he tried to keep his face neutral despite the surprise that Mikael knew about Caroline. "What do you think I've been doing these years? I am the one who commissioned the witch to bring her back."

"You know nothing, and this changes nothing. You will still never be able to pass my walls-" Mikael slammed Elijah into the wall with strong hands at his throat.

"Do not forget your place, boy. The only reason you're alive is because I need you alive to break the haven spell. I will infiltrate your walls, and I will take from Niklaus everything he has loved before I kill him once and for all. Consider this your final warning, if you try to save those two again, I will not spare you." He snapped Elijah's neck for effect and left as quickly as he came.

The door to Caroline's room burst open and Klaus shut it closed again when he pushed Caroline's body against it. She squealed and jumped up to have her legs around him immediately while her hands ran through his hair and he assaulted her neck and collarbone with tongued kisses.

"Mmm, Klaus, you've learned too many of my weaknesses…agh!" she laughed loud enough for her neighbors to hear when he rushed them over to her bed and let her go so that her body flopped onto the bouncy mattress.

"It's payback, love, for you exploiting mine." He smiled and descended down to her, tearing off her shirt in one motion and kissing her soft stomach. His hands on her waist rose until they were at her breasts, and he molded her body beneath his hands but didn't take off the offending garment just yet. They hadn't gone that far yet, but over the past few weeks as Caroline remembered more and they became closer; they couldn't take their hands off one another.

"God, I wish I had just one memory of you using those hands and that-" she let out a gasp when Klaus pulled down her jeans and traced the inside of her thighs with his hands teasingly, "-tongue in the ways you've whispered to me." Klaus removed his shirt and took Caroline's hands in his so that she could run them over his sculpted chest while he lowered himself again and whispered in her ear, "you mean how I would-"

"Don't." she pushed him away from her ear so that he was directly above her looking at her with those deep, beautiful eyes. "I won't be able to stop you if you start that again," she said with the smile that made Klaus melt. He kissed her throat and her chin and her lips, "we don't have to stop, sweetheart," he said against her kisses as his hands trailed feather-like touches over her underwear. Caroline moaned and wished that she were able to let it all go and let him tear off her clothes completely like she often fantasized about, but that simply was not the reality.

"Nik, you know that I would love to spend all day and night in bed with you, but… it's just not right yet. I mean, you have known me for so long and I barely even know myself. I remember bits and pieces and I've made memories now that are amazing in themselves, but I can't- I just-"

"It's okay, Caroline" he comforted her and gently kissed her cheek like he'd done a few times before. She looked at him and bit her lip, she could tell how much he wanted her, and she wanted to ravish him, but something didn't fit, and it stopped her every time.

"Ugh, I'm sorry. You say that every time and I just keep bringing you back, it's not fair." She got up and put on a silk robe that she had hanging over her desk chair. "Maybe you should go. I'll try remembering some more." She didn't look back at him but could sense him behind her. Her head rolled back when he kissed her neck again, sucking on her skin just barely and leaving her with a little bite. "Alright, I'll go."

Once he was gone, Caroline went through the usual thought process. She regretted making him go and stopping their hot, hot make out session, and then she remembered that she didn't remember anything and sleeping with him might not be so smart and then it was back and forth again and again. "Damn it." She held her head in her hands hoping to remember something, anything more than what she did, but nothing came.

"Stefan!" Elijah called to him from down the hall, walking with purpose toward the man's room. Stefan popped his head out and smiled.

"Oh, hey Elijah, where have you been all night? Never mind that- look, we've really got to do something about soundproofing these rooms because I can hear Niklaus and Caroline like twenty-four seven, and-"

"Mikael is back, Stefan. He knows about both of them and maybe how to get past the cloaking spell." Stefan's smile disappeared and he let out a disappointed, "Shit."

"We have to move, now." Elijah and Stefan left that afternoon to find Bonnie, but little could be done. The darkness was already creeping in.
