Recovering

Matt tapped his foot on the floor as he waited to enter the room. It had been at least an hour and he was anxious and worried as to what actually was going on inside the room in front of him.

"Mr. Casey," A worker from Children Services stepped out of the room, "We'd like to talk to you now."

Matt stood up and followed the woman back into the prison meeting room. He took a seat beside the children services worker.

"So Mr. Casey," She began, "It says here that Ben and Griffin have both been seeing a child psychologist for about a month. Is that correct?"

"Yes, it is;" Matt confirmed, "And both of them are making great improvements and gains.

"And the younger one Ben he's having more therapy?"

"Yes," Matt nodded, "Ben's being treated for anxiety, separation; and he's also seeing a specialist to learn positive skills for behavior management."

"And do these therapists seem to be helping him?"

"Yes we've noticed some changes for sure but we know it's going to take time for these changes to become consistent."

The children's services worker stopped the converstation so she could keep up with her notes.

"Now Mr. Casey," She turned a page in her file, "We need to talk about something else."

Matt nodded his head; this is why the meeting had been requested.

"Ms. Darden has been informed that if she completes an AA treatment program within the facility under supervision from counselors she will get her children back."

"Yes, that's what we all want," Matt spoke honestly, "My wife and I love Griffin and Ben but we know the best place for them to be is with Heather."

"Matt," Heather spoke unexpectedly.

Matt turned to look at his friend who was sitting across the table.

"I want to apologize for before. I know how it must have sounded but… hearing you say all of those things- it just made me think about what a horrible mother I've been and I really do want to change that. Please believe me that I want to change and when I get out of here I do want to see my boys; even if I can't live with them at first."

"You know Gabby and I will do everything we can to support you and the boys; we're here for you."

"Ms., Darden if you do complete the program and pass our qualifications then you will be giving back custody of your sons. We all want that but we also want what's best for your boys."

Heather nodded her head, "I know that now." After the incident with Ben just over a month ago Heather had started having regular visits from the children services worker and even the police. But this was the first time she had seen Matt since his and Gabby's last visit.

"Good," Matt nodded his head, "Oh," He handed Heather a package, "The guards already checked it so its safe, its just the boys school pictures and letters they wrote. They really miss you."

Tears collected in her eyes as she took the package and opened it. "Thank you."

"You're welcome."

"We're you still hoping to take them to Disney World?" She asked. "Because its okay if they go."

"Thank you; I know it'll really mean a lot to them; it'll be a good break."

"Like this Lucas," Ben hit a toy that was dangling from the play gym, "That's how you play with it."

Lucas laughed and kicked his feet. The he had only ben on his play mat a handful of times and he still wasn't quite sure what to do with it.

"Relax Ben," Griffin looked up from his homework, "He's only two months old; stop bothering him and let him play on his own."

Ben frowned and crossed his arms, "You're just mad because your girlfriend dumped you!"

"Carla is not my girlfriend!" He let out an exasperated sigh, "And she certainly didn't dump me."

"Well then how come you haven't asked her to the Christmas dance yet?"

"What-" Griffin was officially annoyed, "How do you know about that?"

"Duh! We go to the same school and share a room, I know everything."

"Well keep it to yourself;" He turned back to his English homework, "Some of us have homework to do."

"Speaking of homework," Gabriela walked down the stairs carrying a laundry basket "Ben, have you written in your journal yet?"

"Maybe," Ben responded as he went back to watching Lucas.

Gabriela set the basket on the floor and looked at him, "If I go get it will I find it empty?"

"Auntie Gabby I don't have anything to write about. I didn't get mad or yell at anyone today."

"Look me in the eyes and tell me that again," She instructed.

"I haven't written in it yet;" Ben told her, "But I really don't; have anything to write."

"Ben its okay to get frustrated sometimes everyone does; I get frustrated all the time. What everyone needs to learn is how to handle and deal with those frustrations in a non-violent way."

"No one else has to do it," He sulked, "The kids in my class think I'm crazy because I see a psychologist."

"Come her sweetie," Gabriela outstretched her arms, once Ben had approached her she said, "You and your brother have experienced more heartbreak and tragedy then some adults have; its good that your getting help and getting better; And I bet if you asked your teacher you could talk to the class about why you get pulled out of school to go to the hospital so much."

"I just want real friends," He hugged her, "Friends who don't hate me."

"Oh sweetie," She kissed him, "You do have friends. You know what go write about how all of this makes you feel in your journal.

Ben looked up at her, "I can do that?"

"You can write about anything that makes you frustrated; now go on."

Ben left to go get his journal out of his backpack. He returned moments later with his backpack,

"Okay boys I'll just be in the laundry room; remember Uncle Matt is bringing home pizza for dinner so no snacking before dinner."

"Waaa!" Lucas kicked his feet and flapped his arms, "Waaa!" The wails and sobs continued.

"Baby," Gabby set the laundry basket down once again and walked over to where Lucas was, "What's wrong?" She knelt down and picked him up, "You don't need to be changed," She lifted him up to smell his diaper, "And its not dinner time yet."

While Gabby was comforting Lucas both Griffin and Ben set out to help, Griffin lifted up the laundry basket and carried it into the laundry room to start the laundry and Ben got down on his hands and knees to search for the perfect toy for Lucas.

"Ben," Gabriela watched him crawl around the floor, "Mind telling me what you're doing?"

"I'm trying to find Lukey's favourite toy."

"Ben, sweetie Lucas doesn't have a favourite toy yet."

"I know that's why I need to find it; maybe if he has a favourite toy he'll stop crying."

"You know what Ben he really likes that firehouse fifty-one blanket upstairs I his room, it's on the rocking chair."

"Okay," Ben dashed up the stairs to retrieve the blanket.

"Laundry's loaded Aunt Gabby," Griffin returned into he room, "And I'm almost done my homework."

"Thank you for loading the laundry Griffin," Gabriela praised him, "That was very thoughtful of you."

"Here it is Auntie Gabby," Ben returned wit the blanket, "Oh and Uncle Matt just pulled in."

"Pizza!" Griffin closed his History textbook and rushed towards the front door.

"Here you go Lukey," Ben dangled the blanket in front of his god-brother, "Here's your blankey,"

Lucas reached for it and grabbed it with his hands putting it up to his mouth he sucked on it and began to calm down.

"He's not crying anymore."

"Yeah that's right; I'm not sure if its because of the blanket though," Gabby observed her son whose eyes were fixated on Matt.

"Hey Hun, I think someone missed you," She carried Lucas to him.

"Ah," Matt took his son out of Gabby's arms and lifted him in the air, "Did you miss Daddy?" He asked.

Lucas smiled and dangled the blanket over Matt's face before finally dropping it.

"Hey," Matt smiled as he took the blanket away and Lucas let out a soft laugh.

"Hey did he just laugh?" Ben questioned, "Was that a laugh?"

"I think it was," Gabby nodded, "First smiling, now laughing, next he'll be crawling."

"But then he can take my toys," Ben frowned, "I don't want him taking my toys."

"He won't be crawling for a few more months Ben and when he does start we'll make sure he can't get your toys. He needs infant toys to play with, toys with big parts."

"He smiles when I play with my toy cars; maybe we could get him a big toy car. No even better a fire truck!"

"We'll now I'm not opposed to that idea," Matt handed Lucas back to Gabby so he could take the pizzas into the kitchen.

"We'll see," Gabriela rubbed Lucas' back, "Lets get you a bottle before you start crying." She set him on her hip as she retrieved a bottle from the fridge.

"Auntie Gabby," Ben said from behind her, "You said I could feed him a bottle when he wasn't really fussy. Can I do it now?"

Ever since Lucas had smiled for the first time four days earlier Ben had become more eager to help; even helping to change his diaper on two occasions and he often played with him throughout the day. But on thing he hadn't done yet was feed Lucas a bottle.

"Sure you can but you need to let me help you."

"Okay," Ben followed her into the living room and sat on the couch.

"Now," She handed Lucas to Ben, "Make sure you support his head and hold the bottle up right; like this," She used the hand-over-hand technique and showed him what to do."

As Ben held the bottle as Gabby showed him Lucas looked up at him as he sucked the milk out of the bottle.

"Hey Lukey; I'm going to make sure you get all kinds of cool toys to play with now that you can play with toys."

Not wanting to interrupt the bonding experience Gabby crept to dinning room table and got her IPhone out and began taking some pictures.

"Auntie Gabby," Ben groaned, "Why do you always have to take pictures?"

"Because I want to remember this moment forever."

"Why?"

"Because it's a picture of two of my favourite boys together."

"But it doesn't have the best one," Griffin spoke pizza in his mouth he sat on the couch.

"No!" Ben glared at him, "You're the best one!"

"Ben; do you need me to take Lucas?" Gabby could see the anger building up inside of him, "You seem to be angry."

"I don't like Griffin saying he's the beat," Ben vocalized is feelings, "It hurts my feelings."

"Lighten up man, it was just a joke," Griffin rolled his eyes.

"Griffin you may have seen it as a joke but your brother didn't; and he's being very grown-up about trying to talk to you about it."

"Fine," Griffin sighed, "I'm sorry Ben; I didn't mean to hurt your feelings."

"Okay," Ben nodded as Lucas finished drinking the milk from the bottle.

"Here sweetie," Jules took Lucas out of Ben's arms, "You did a great job feeding him but I'm going to burp him. Why don't you and Griffin go get some pizza and then sit at the dinning room table.

"Okay," Ben smiled as he stood up, "I hope you didn't take all the good pieces," He stuck his tongue out at his brother.

"Uh!" Griffin flicked his hair, "I don't eat that much."

"Yes you do!" Ben stepped in line with him and argued as they made their way into the kitchen.

"Oh boy," Gabriela cooed as she held Lucas close, "Those boys are silly."

Lucas turned his body so he was closer to his mother and sucked his thumb.

"Well aren't we content," She kissed his forehead, "Are you trying to make Mommy feel bad for wanting to eat dinner?"

Lucas looked up at her and smiled.

"Sneaky just like your father," She kissed him again and laid him on his tummy on his play mate, "Mommy and Daddy are just going to be over here; you can watch us eat; then we'll play with you."

"But he doesn't have any good toys!" Ben complained, "We need to go toy shopping!"

"Ben Lucas has plenty of toys; if he has anymore we won't have any room to move."

"But Auntie Gabby he needs cars and trucks and army men."

Gabriela found it curious that whenever Ben mentioned Lucas getting more toys it was always cars, trucks and army men.

"Why those toys bud?" Matt wondered.

"Because then I can play with him. Show him how to play with them."

"You want to play with Lucas?" Griffin seemed surprised, "But he can't do anything."

"No he can smile and laugh and reach for toys. I'm going to teach him how to play with cars and trucks and everything!"

Mat couldn't help the smile that spread on his face as he listened to Ben talk; it was a huge change from him being insanely jealous of his god-brother only a month before.

"So can we get more toys?"

"How can we say no now? But we're going to put some of the toys in the basement to make room."

"I'll sort through them."

"Aright you can do that tomorrow after your apportionment and we'll see about going toy shopping on Sunday."

"Yay!" Ben cheered.

"Speaking of cheering," Matt began, "How would you boys like to go to Orlando with Antonio, Jackie and the kids for March Break?

"Really?"

"Yep, everything's all been planned."

"Yay!" Both boys cheered.

"Are we going to Disney World?"

"Yep and I think we're also going to Universal as well."

Griffin's eyes went wide, "That's where they have Harry Potter World!"

Matt chuckled, "Yeah buddy I think that's why we're going."

"Oh my gosh!" Griffin cheered, "Some of my friends have gone and they loved it. I can't wait to go!"

"And boys," Gabriela spoke after they had settled down, "We're going o be driving over-night on the Friday. So are Antonio, Jackie and the kids. Uncle Matt, Antonio and me are all used to staying up at night so it works out."

"How long of a drive is it?" Griffin asked.

"About eighteen hours, we'll be in Orlando and at the resort by late Saturday afternoon for sure. That way we can have a relaxing day and go swimming and plane what we're doing the rest of the week."

"Can we watch the third Harry Potter movie tonight? Then at Freddie's next weekend we can watch the fourth with Carla and Mackenzie."

"Ooh, Griffin and Carla sitting in a tree…."

"BEN!" Griffin's cheeks flushed red, "Shut up!" He stormed into his bedroom and slammed the door.

"Ben that wasn't very nice," Gabby, observed, "I think you should apologize."

"No, no," Matt shook his head, "Ben can apologize later; I think I'm going to go and talk to Griffin for awhile."

"Good idea," Gabby patted his hand.
