He...was warm. James actually felt warm. It wasn't the cold, damp air of Rapture. The air didn't smell of of blood and salt water either, it smelled clean and... fresh.
James' eyes opened slowly. He was in room only it was bright. The walls were white without mold or blood stains and the light wasn't flickering or dead. He was lying in clean bed, several bandages covered his body and an iv of some liquid was hooked up to his wrist. He had a white shirt and pants on but no sign of his weapons or other clothing.
James bolted upwards remembering his blackout and looking for Mary. He found sleeping a few feet away on another bed. Seeing that she was James got up and cautiously walked out of the room. He came into a small hall way, it wasnt trashed up but actually pictures hanging and books stacked up as well. On the far left of the hall was a door only it was metal and had a wheel instead of a door knob. On the right a few, normal, closed doors and some stairs with light at the top.
James began walking towards the stairs observing the pictures on the wall. Some of them were of Rapture but most of them showed pictures of the surface like mountains and forests. It made James even more curious until he saw a small security camera just were the ceiling gave way to stairs. It had a red light atop and was giving off a small hum. James stopped at the bottom of the stairs and then started to climb up. At the top was a large study/library with several shelves of books, paintings, and boxes. But in the middle of the room sitting at a desk was a man.
James was about to back down when he heard a voice.
"Don't be frightened James".
It came from the man at the desk.
"How do you know my name?!" James demanded
"Oh calm down, I know a lot more than you think" the man said back.
James continued to just stare, to afraid to approach the man.
"Sit down, we have much to discuss"
James carefully approached the desk and took the seat in front of it. He figured if the man was a threat he would already be dead.
He was a tall, dark skinned man with shaved hair. He looked to be around 40 years old though. He was wearing wearing a lab coat and white pants.
"Now I probably owe you some explanations so you can ask questions first" the man said to James.
"We'll first of all who the hell are you and why are Mary and I here?" James asked calmly.
"You can call me Thomas. I'm a doctor here in Rapture or at least I was. You and Mary are here because I saw her crying over your body on camera. I came out there fast enough to convince here to let me bring you and her here to my apartment."
"You were watching us on camera!"
James shouted
"You could have helped us, save Riv and Jessica!"
"I am not allowed to interfere with test subjects, it is only by my mercy I saved you two" Thomas said calmly to the angered James.
"What do you mean test subjects?" James asked.
"James... we have been watching you from the beginning. When you parents died you weren't free to live you life. You were going to be a part of the little sister program from that point on..."
There was silence after that; James just stared back at Thomas. It was all a lie, his life his choices were all just lies.
"If it makes you feel any better James you've made it further than we thought you would." Thomas said, disrupting the silence.
James still sat without a word, just staring.
"What do you mean by 'we'" James finally spoke.
"The other doctors and researchers working on the project, most of them are dead and the few left I've lost contact with." Thomas answered
"So this is it, you're just sitting here waiting to die doing nothing!" James said, anger starting to flare.
A small smile crept on to Thomas's face "I was wondering when you would ask and no, I'm not waiting to die. In one of the rooms down stairs I have been collecting scrap, parts, and all sorts of junk."
"What good is that?!" James asked.
"I'm building a way out"
"You're... building a way... out?" James said with shock.
"I found and old bathysphere in a warehouse not far from here, it looked like hell but I managed to get it patched up. It still needs some work though and I haven't been able to get to it recently, to many splicers"
"So you're telling me that if the bathysphere was fixed it would be able to do surface travel." James hastily stated.
"Help me repair it any way possible and I promise you and her a ride out of this hell hole. It will take time but in the end... you're free." Thomas held out his worn hand.
James reached across the desk and shook it.
"Deal"
