Chapter 11: Hiding

Two green eyes surveyed the astonishing words that the paper Amy held said. She stayed silent and slowly sat on her bed spotting words like 'rent', 'electricity' and 'bank'. Her system almost shut down for the amount of money she saw on the sheet, but she growled, turned away from the paper but she couldn't hold herself back on looking again. It could have been only a dream, but no matter how many times she blinked she kept seeing the same situation again.

She threw the paper to the side and it landed slowly on the bed.

Amy's eyes streamed with tears, but she didn't allow herself to cry. Crying didn't solve anything on any situation. She got up and was about to go out of her room, but her phone ringed. Amy stopped halfway out the door of her room but returned to answer her cellphone. On the caller I.D. she saw it was her manager calling her and Amy answered it quickly.

"Hello?"

"Amy, I'm so glad you answered. The bar will be closed due to all the snow and not many people can come out because of it so you'll be glad to hear you'll take the night off."

Amy could only think otherwise. It was a bad idea. If she didn't work she didn't have money and that was the first thing she needed. She wanted to reply so badly, but instead she had to agree. "Yes, sir,"

"Okay, goodbye."

There was a long pause and he hanged up on the other line. Amy sighed and closed shut her phone tightening it in her hand. She muttered a 'great'. She eyed the watch on her phone stating it was late in the afternoon and ran out her room leaving her room.

Heading downstairs to her living room she could hear nothing, but the sound of her own two feet step down to the kitchen. She looked around but found it empty, just like always. She sighed again but louder and leaned on a wall. She wanted company. It was too quiet around her house to stay and decided she's pay a visit to Tails' and see if Cream or Sonic was around.

It was finally on the mist of December and snow had arrived early. Hardly people left their house on snowy days and school was closed for the day too. Still, Amy wasn't one to stay at a place for so long without doing much. She especially didn't like staying at home. She closed herself in a winter coat, a pair of boots and left home. Walking along the hard snow that had fallen over night was tough, but she still was up and about trying to get through it over to Tails. She headed up the street and began to think, when she had gotten so close with that group. It was only months ago when she began getting to know Tails and Sonic.

Amy smiled to herself hiding in her hood.

The last few months passed by quicker than she would have imaged. She had gotten closer to Sonic in a way she herself couldn't explain. Sonic was still as annoying as could be, but when she was around him her emotions changed. Her worries disappeared and she just wanted to smile, but smiling was sometime she was afraid to do in front of him.

She reached Tails' house in a few minutes and went up to his door. She knocked twice and breathed out fog from her mouth into her shivering hands. She rubbed them together and waited a while until the door open to Sonic and not the owner. Sonic's eyes widened instantly and he looked around. "Amy?"

"Is Cream here?" She asked.

"No, she's home where it's warm. Come inside or you'll become a snowwomen." He explained grabbing her arm and pulling her inside. He closed the door and Amy pulled her arm back.

"Snowwomen? That's new, but no it's okay if she's not here then there's no need for me here." She told him.

"But you're already here. Might as well stay," he winked at her and walked into the living room with Amy following him. The living room was warm with the fire from the fireplace on and there was a mountain of pillows on a couch but no one else was around. Amy watched him fall on top of all the pillows and Amy raised an eyebrow. "Where's Tails?"

"Not home." He claimed smirking at her.

"But where is he?" Amy re-asked hoping she'd sound clearer

"He wanted to spend more time with his girlfriend and so went over to her place today." He explained cuddling with one of his nearby pillows. Amy rolled her eyes at his childish behavior and was going to turn around to head outside but Sonic quickly ran to her side. "Where are you going?"
Amy glared at him. "Anywhere but here, I feel uncomfortable being with you alone."

"What, you don't trust me?" Sonic moved in closer to Amy his breath brushing down on her. His head leaned in on her face and Amy backed away feeling a rush of blood on her cheeks. "Sonic," Her voice cracked and he laughed noticing she had gotten scared.

"You think too much." He laughed and nodded his head towards the living room. "I won't do anything, promise,"

"You better," She muttered.

Sonic grinned at her. "But then what do you want to do?"

Amy sat on a sofa near the couch Sonic was in and sat on it sophisticatedly. Amy leaned to her left and bites her lip looking up at the white ceiling made out of Tails' handy job. "Actually," Amy started her voice quiet and getting Sonic's attention. "Before anything I have a question to ask."

"Ask away," Sonic got up from his comfortable position on the pillows.

"It's about Knuckles. What kind of guy is he?"

Sonic breath hitched and he narrowed his eyes giving her an awkward smile. "You interested?"

"No! I'm curious of him. Like what did Sally see in him to make her like him," She said hearing the curiosity in her voice. It was surprising that she herself was asking such a silly question, but it was engrossing for that topic was unknown to her.

Sonic's muscles relaxed and he smiled. He closed his eyes and allowed himself to relax. "Have you ever heard of the term 'love'? Yea, it makes you do crazy things."

"We're not talking about that." Amy snarled.

"But it's the whole concept on why Sally even had his eyes on him." Sonic opened his eyes and gazed at her seriously. "Knuckles knows how to get girls and girls being girls fall in love easily." He said unabashed.

"So he's a player." She skeptically paraphrased his sentence.

"He likes to date. Tries to find which girls right for him," He corrected her.

Amy rolled her eyes and huffed to the side saying in a low tone, "And of all girls he chooses Rouge, pathetic."

"Why don't you tell him that," Sonic suggested amused.

Amy paused for a while and sighed, leaning back of the sofa like if she were at her own home. She shook her head and narrowed her eyes while speaking distantly. "If only I could."

"What?"

Alarmed, Amy turned to him and shook her head vigorously. "Nothing,"

Sonic pouted his lips and stopped himself from anymore question. He shrugged them all but a new question came up and he found himself unable to hold it back. "Have you ever been in love?"

Her heart nearly stopped and her voice was stopped half-short. She death glared him and suddenly felt as if he were doing this on purpose. To make her feel uncomfortable or weak maybe he was going to do something, but definitely her guard was up. "Why do you care?"

"Just asking," He smirked watching her face bleach and her eyes glow red. When she didn't reply he added, "You don't look like you've been in love before, but it doesn't hurt to ask."

"Think again," Amy got up her fist ready for the punch and Sonic flinched back and lifted his hands up in defense. He found no real threat to it so he laughed, "Whoa, whoa, whoa! Amy C'mon!"

A knock interrupted them.

Amy and Sonic froze and their heads shifted to the small hall where the door was.

"Someone knocked." Amy stated quietly.

"If it's Tails he has a key." He muttered back, but they heard neither the key nor Tails' voice.

They stayed quiet for a few more second when a rough voice followed by a flirtiest female voice spoke from outside. "Sonic! You home Bro!?" "Yoo-hoo? Sonic darling?"

"Speak of the devil." Sonic hissed under his breath and got up from his couch. Amy tensed up and fear blew all over her face. Sonic peeked through the window and spotted Knuckles and Rouge. Amy took a peek too and when she saw it was really them she freaked out. He jumped in front of Amy and his hands clapped her shoulders.

"Sonic get me out of here." She squeaked through her tight throat. It almost sounded like she was pleading, but Sonic didn't ignore her. He agreed with a quick nod and pushed at her back.

Outside Knuckles looked around the orange house and Rouge knocked again. "Sonic?"

"I don't think they're around. Let's go." Knuckles told her. Rouge shrugged and they were going to turn around when the door opened to Sonic. He grinned at them and crossed his arms leaning against the doorway.

"So what brings you two here?" He coolly asked.

"We came to talk to you about something." Knuckles said entering without permission but Sonic didn't say anything. Rouge followed in and Sonic closed the door with a smug smile. "Make yourself at home." Sonic called out and walked into the living room

Amy quickly ran around a corner where some stairs were. She took a moment to catch her breath and began hearing their voices. She was far enough from their sights but their voices echoed and she could hear them clearly.

Just as Sonic walked into the living room he saw Knuckles staring at his pillow pile.

"Whatchu've been doing. Cuddling with girls?" Knuckles mocked, but Sonic wasn't offended. Sonic only smirked at him and replied, "You could say that."

Amy felt her face wince. "Idiot," she muffled a growled.

"But most importantly, why come over here in the middle of a snowstorm?" Sonic asked, sitting on his land full of pillows.

"Can't I visit a friend, man?" Knuckles chuckled.

Sonic nervously looked around and spotted Rouge sitting, one leg crossed over the other, on the couch to the side where Amy had sat earlier. "With your girlfriend?"

"You got something against me Hog?" She replied with a fake coyly voice.

"Nothing at all, Rouge. Have I told you lately that you're a beauty to look at." He replied back with some sarcasm through his tone, but both of them didn't seem to note.

Amy got to the other side where the kitchen was and heard Sonic. She stopped and frowned. She heard Rouge giggle and wondered why Knuckles didn't say anything about this, but she continued and walked to the edge of the doorway.

"Oh!" Knuckles snapped his fingers and smirked at Sonic. "I almost forget, Sonic, I'm throwing a party on New Year's over at my place. We've invited you along with Tails and his girl. You should come along."

Sonic's eyes seemed to change form and he looked surprised. Knuckles found it strange that he looked astonished by the announcement for it was a common thing of them to do. Sonic stayed quiet and took a quick glance to the side where the exit to the house was. Amy peeked just in time and saw from a distance that Knuckles stared with an eye raised. Rouge sat on the couch facing her way and she found that dangerous so she quickly pulled her head in.

Rouge caught something from the corner of her eye and turned her head completely at the kitchen hallway.
"Sonic?" Knuckles' voice broke Sonic's trance.

"No, actually that sounds like a good idea." Sonic beamed happily.

Rouge didn't see anyone and ignored whatever it was. She faced Sonic who was getting up from the couch. "You guys thirsty? Want anything to drink?" Sonic asked.

"No thanks," Rouge said automatically.

"Liquor," Knuckles called out.

Sonic rolled his eyes and walked into the kitchen leaving Knuckles and Rouge out in the living room. Once he was out of their sights he looked around hesitantly, but saw Amy peeking from the other side of the kitchen. He sped to her and looked around.

"Make them leave," She hissed before he could ask if she was alright.

"Easier said than done, they just came," He replied back trying to keep his voice low.

"Isn't there like a backdoor in this house?" Amy asked.

"The garage, Tails' workshop, but it's near the basement and you'll have to get to the other side without being seen from the living room. The door down there's locked and the keys are up in my room." He explained quickly leaving Amy dumbfolded.

"I don't like that suicide mission you're giving me. I'm going to hid out upstairs." He said.

"Sonic what's taking so long?" Knuckles called from outside.

Sonic's muscles tensed and he pointed down the hall rapidly instructing her orders towards the stairs, "Fine, hurry while they're distracted."

She made her way out of the kitchen and he turned around and walked out into the living room loudly saying. "We're out of Liquor!"

Amy made her way through the doorway into a small pass-through that led to the stairs and into the living room, but since that was what she was avoiding she stayed glued to the wall moving slowly as she heard the voices of the guest become closer. She made a quick move around the rail and onto the first step, but her foot missed it and she fell hard on the first four steps.

Rouge's ears ascended and she looked to where the noise came from. Sonic and Knuckles heard it too and they all stopped talking. Knuckles tilted to the side to see if there was anything, but of course no one was there, or so they thought. Amy had cupped her mouth from yelping and got up slowly making her way upstairs.

Rouge had an acute hearing and continued to hear feet tap on floor and she narrowed her eyes. She turned to the boys who were shrugging off what the noise was. Rouge got up from the couch and glared at Sonic. "Are you sure Tails isn't home?"

Her question caught Sonic off guard and he nearly tipped over from hitting his foot on one of the edges from it. "He would have came out by now." He said firmly.

Knuckles rolled his eyes at them and made his way into the kitchen. "You have food in here? I'm starves." He walked away from them and Sonic's eyes widened. "Hey, I don't think Tails would appreciate you gagging on his snacks."

Rouge didn't follow them. She stood in place trying to see if she could still here those strange noises that even Sonic wasn't concern with. Her wings flapped and she entered the hall near the stairs. The sound of a creaking at the hinges of a door upstairs rang low. It was Rouge's instincts that gave her the will to spread her wings open from her body releasing air and used her feet to give herself a boost in the air up the stairs. She reached the top onto the second floor and she landed on her boots her heels stepping first and resting her wings.

She looked around cautiously eyeing for anything that moved, but instead she found the door to the first room slightly opened. Her heels tapped on the floor as she walked into what was the restroom upstairs. She opened the door and walked in slowly. All was silent and inside it seemed empty. Not even the water from the sink's foist ran. Rouge turned around and saw the bath tub being covered by the curtains. She walked at a slow cat's pace when they're about to caught they're pray, moving her hand up gingerly to it and then sliding it to the side.

Rouge's eyes eased at seeing nothing was there and she sighed walking back but looked at the mirror to fix her hair and whipped around back out. She reached the stairs and downstairs already stood Knuckles and Sonic. Knuckles smirked at her and Sonic narrowed his eyes. "What were you doing?"

"I had to go to the restroom, hun. Beauty is a girl's number one priority." She claimed walking down and to her boyfriend's arm.

Sonic scoffed and shook his head. While Knuckles gave Rouge a smooch Sonic looked up the stairs wondering if Amy was okay. He bluntly stared away and walked to the living room while Rouge eyed Sonic suspiciously from the corner of her eye. Something was mysterious of the way Sonic acted. Someone was in the house and it sure wasn't Tails or Cream. Rouge knew then that Sonic was hiding something or someone and she was determined to find out what…or who.

The door opened slightly and Sonic peeked in his head turning on the lights. His room was empty and he entered rubbing the back of his head confused. After Rouge and Knuckles left 3 hours later he rushed up the stairs and searched everywhere for Amy. Tails' room, the small library, the bathroom and now his room still he hadn't seen Amy. He looked in back of the doorway and walked inside to the middle of his room.

"Amy?" He whispered.

Nothing. He didn't hear any sort of reply and he crossed his arms.

"Amy!?"

He made his way around looking under his bed and behind his drawers and other desks, but he didn't find her. He turned and walked up to the closet and opened it. He didn't expect for anyone to be there, but he was wrong. Down in the corner of his closet full of sweaters and shirts he found Amy asleep. Her head was sideways resting on the wall and her arms were wrapped around her knees. Sonic flinched. He hadn't seen her sleep before and to see her as vulnerable as she slept was stunning, but he acted quickly after he recollected himself. He bend down and his arms went under her knees and his other hand went for her back. He picked her up bridal-style and walked over to his bed.

She wasn't heavy. She was almost as light as a feather. Sonic placed on knee on his bed and he laid her carefully on his bed. He looked out his window and frowned out the night sky. Amy had stayed inside for too long and with it being late she had fallen asleep waiting for them to leave. Sonic chuckled to himself at the fact of her even waiting for that long. He pulled up a small blanket that was folded near his bed's edge and he covered her up. He kissed the top of her head and covered up her neck so she would be warm. He got off the bed and smiled walking out of his room. He turned off the lights and walked out into the hall leaving the door slightly open. The light from the hall illuminated through the small opening that the door left being slightly open and its lighting hit Amy's eye. Once he was gone her eyes open halfway and she smile.
