"So what are we going to tell people?" Kurt asked as he lay next to David on his bed playing with the curls at Dave's temple.
Dave laughed. "We don't have to tell anybody anything. I mean unless you were planning on announcing it to the entire town."
"I think it's good to have a plan in our back pocket," Kurt replied haughtily. "You said we could be together however I wanted and I expect at least one date before I have to leave and we call this off. We could run into someone we know. I just want to know what we should plan on telling them if that happens."
"I suppose telling them that we are 10 day boyfriends is out of the question?" Dave asked jokingly.
"If you want to explain this horrible plan to people then by all means go for it."
Dave looked at Kurt with a smirk. "If it's so horrible then why did you agree to it?"
Kurt sighed. "Because you were being stubborn. And also I am kind of hoping I can change your mind between now and then."
"Good luck, Hummel. Have fun trying," Dave said in a joking manner, but his eyes were serious.
"Oh believe me, Karofsky," Kurt said mimicking the seriousness in his own eyes. "I will."
"Kurt? Honey? We're home."
"Shit. My dad and Carole are home early," Kurt said as he climbed off of David. He was actually glad they hadn't popped in 5 minutes later because he isn't sure what position he would have been in then.
"Do I need to try and climb out the window?" Dave asked. It was obvious he was joking, but the question held a bit of seriousness to it.
"Of course not," Kurt replied. "I was hoping you would stay for dinner with us later anyway. I just thought we would have a little more alone time is all. Come on. Let's go," Kurt finished as he grabbed Dave's hand and tugged him along behind him as he went to welcome his father and stepmother back home.
"Hi dad. Hi Carole. Welcome back home."
"Kurt. Sweetie, thank you. It is good to be back," Carole said. " And hello to you, David. It is nice to see you again."
"You too Mrs. Hummel," Dave replied shyly.
"Oh please. Call me Carole. Burt do you need any help with the bags?"
"No," Burt said as he made his way into the house. "I got them all. Hey Kurt. David," he said with a nod to them both.
"Dad I was wondering if it would be okay if David stayed for dinner?" Kurt asked quickly.
"Oh I think that would be wonderful," Carole said as she looked at Burt.
"I don't see why not. As long as it is okay with your old man."
Dave shrugged. "My dad's working tonight and told me to fend for myself for dinner."
"Well then in that case I don't see a problem," Burt said.
"Great," Carole said happily. "I do need to run out to the freezer in the garage and grab some things for dinner tomorrow though before I forget."
"I can help you if you need it," Dave offered.
"Thank you David. I wouldn't mind some help at all," she smiles and then the two of them left leaving Kurt and his father alone.
"So," Burt began. "You two together now?"
"For now," Kurt said delicately.
"What does that mean?" his dad asked hesitantly.
"It means I'm working on it," Kurt replied.
"Okay. I trust you to know what you're doing," his dad said.
Kurt sighed. If only he trusted himself too.
"I'm going to miss you guys so much," Rachel said drunkenly from the small makeshift stage in her basement.
"This is hilarious," Dave whispered into Kurt's ear.
"You should have seen her last time she threw a party."
It was a going away party for Rachel that she lovingly referred to as her 'Goodbye Lima, Hello New York' party.
"So are all the Glee club parties this weird?"
Kurt laughed. "Only when they involve alcohol. Rachel's a bit of a light weight."
Dave smiled at Kurt as he took a drink of his beer.
"Well look who has decided to grace us with their presence," Santana said as she sauntered up to them. "I figured you two would stay holed up together until Lady Lips here skipped town."
"I wouldn't dare leave without seeing you one last time Satan," Kurt said with a smile. "Besides my plan is to get Dave loosened up with this free alcohol. It all works to my advantage."
David turned red as Kurt smiled sweetly at him.
Santana smirked. "Well then you two enjoy yourselves. Hopefully next time I see Davey bear here he'll be a real man," she said as she walked away to rejoin Brittany.
"I don't know how I feel about everyone knowing about my sex life," Dave admitted to Kurt softly.
"I only said that to try and shut her up. But if you are that malleable then I have no qualms."
Dave laughed. "It would take a little more than a few drinks Hummel. I know how to hold my liquor unlike Berry."
"Then I guess I will have to come up with a new plan," Kurt said with an innocent smile while Dave's face reddened.
Kurt knew he should have restraint, but he found that with Dave he didn't want to hold back.
"Stay with me tonight," Kurt said as Dave moved from kissing his lips to kissing his neck.
Dave jerked back to get a better look at Kurt underneath him. "Are you sure that's a good idea?"
"Why wouldn't it be? Both our parents are out of town for business. Most couples would give anything to have a chance like this," Kurt said teasingly.
"I don't know. You don't think we're moving a little fast do you?"
"Isn't that the whole point of this? To make the most of the short amount of time that we do have?" Kurt asked.
"Yeah I just… I don't want to screw anything up." Dave said adverting his eyes away from Kurt's.
Kurt put his hand on the side of Dave's face and forced the other boy to look at him. He leaned up to give Dave a small kiss before speaking. "You couldn't."
"You sound so sure. You forget Hummel. I have zero experience."
"Well you are in luck because I have some pamphlets that my dad gave me last year. They're very informative," Kurt said matter-of-factly.
Dave reddened. "How can you be so flippant about this? Isn't it kind of a big deal I mean… I don't know."
"Dave we don't have to do anything, okay. I just thought we could see what happens. I care about you. A lot. But if you don't think you're ready then that is fine," Kurt said reassuringly.
"I care about you a lot too, Kurt. I just want everything to be right."
Kurt smiled. "It's you and me. Everything's already right."
Kurt didn't know what to expect out of a date with Dave Karofsky, but this definitely was not it.
"A picnic. Really, David?" Kurt asked as he watched Dave spread a thick blanket out on the ground.
"What?" Dave asked defensively. "You don't like it?"
"No. It isn't that," Kurt said quickly. "I just thought you would go for dinner at Breadstix."
"Every one does dinner at Breadstix," Dave replied.
"Yeah, but when I said I wanted you to take me out on a date I didn't mean that you had to go out of your way to put together a picnic."
"Aw man. Are you serious? You mean I didn't have to set up that sunset hot air balloon ride and the majestic twilight stroll through the park?" he said with a smirk. Kurt had finally finished up the majority of his packing, of course with the help of David so they decided it was time to treat themselves for getting it all done so quickly. Kurt would have been more than happy to stay in and continue taking advantage of an empty house, but Dave had insisted they go out.
"Ha ha. Laugh all you want. I was just saying you didn't have to do all this. I would have been happy with just dinner at a restaurant."
"Well I didn't want to just have dinner with you at a subpar restaurant. You deserve more than that," Dave said matter-of-factly. "Plus… Don't laugh at me, but this is kind of my first real date. I wanted it to be special."
Kurt sat there looking at Dave for a moment while Dave eyed him nervously. "What?" Dave asked hesitantly.
Kurt darted forward and placed a sweet kiss on Dave's cheek to keep himself from saying anything that might scare Dave and have him end their quasi-relationship 4 days early. "Nothing," he stated simply before affectionately adding, "You are just adorable."
"Kurt! I'm hom- WOAH! I did not need to see that!" Finn said as he shielded his eyes and quickly backed out of the room.
"Have you never heard of knocking? Oh my god!" Kurt yelled as he and Dave both scrambled to find their clothes.
"Sorry, Bro! I forgot what it was like to have doors. Privacy is pretty much nonexistent when you are in military training," Finn said through the door as Kurt and Dave clothed themselves.
Once they both had redressed, Kurt opened the door to find his stepbrother standing there looking sheepish. "Sorry about that," Finn said. "But when in the hell did this happen?" he asked as he gestured between Kurt and Dave.
"We got really close over the summer," Kurt said, hoping that would be enough.
"Yeah no shit! I gathered that when I accidently walked in on Karofsky sucki-"
"Finn. Please stop talking," Kurt interrupted as his face turned even redder than it already was.
"Um… I think I am going to go," Dave said softly.
"No. Sorry man. I don't want you to feel like you have to leave because I made things awkward."
"No. It's fine. You and Kurt probably want to catch up some since you haven't been home all summer," Dave explained. "Good to see you, Hudson."
"You too man."
"Bye David. I'll see you tomorrow?" Kurt asked as Dave began to walk away.
"Yeah. Call me later, okay? Bye," he said with a small wave and then he was gone.
"So what's up with that?" Finn asked as the front door closed.
"We're working it out," Kurt said.
"To me it looks like you guys are fuc-"
"Finn Hudson. Please stop," Kurt interrupted once more.
"Sorry," Finn said sheepishly. "Most of the guys at basic training had a raunchy sense of humor and I guess it just rubbed off on me."
"I didn't even know you were coming home."
"Yeah… I got sent home actually. Injured."
"Oh my god. Are you okay?" Kurt asked worriedly.
Finn seemed a bit embarrassed. "I am now. It's an embarrassing story so I'll tell you later, but long story short no active duty for me so there isn't much point in keeping me around," Finn said. "Have you… talked to Rachel lately?"
"Yes," Kurt answered. "She is in New York already. She went with her dads to get set up in our apartment. I am going to be joining her there in a few days."
"You're going to New York after all? That's great," Finn said excitedly.
"Yeah. David helped me get an internship at Vogue."
"I guess that's how you two grew so close," Finn said with a smirk before asking, "What happened with Blaine?"
Kurt heaved a sigh before speaking. "We mutually broke up. We decided we work out better as friends and he is now dating Sebastian. Or maybe they are just friends with benefits. I have no clue," Kurt replied.
"So you and Dave… Are you together or just friends with benefits too?"
"We're together," Kurt stated. "For now."
Finn looked confused. "For now?"
"I leave in a few days to move to New York and we are calling it quits when I do. Dave doesn't want me to worry about a long distance relationship I guess," Kurt said sadly.
Finn watched his stepbrother carefully. "Is that what you want?"
"No," Kurt said bitterly. "I don't care about the fact that we would have to work through long distance, but David is rather stubborn."
Finn nodded. "That sucks. But I can't really judge him. I'm not too good when it comes to relationship stuff either," he said sadly.
"She's mad at you, but she would forgive you," Kurt said softly.
"I know, but not yet. I need to work on myself a little before anything else gets worked out. You know?"
Kurt nodded. "Yeah. I do."
"I'm glad you and David could come out tonight. I'm glad I was able to say good bye before you leave for the city that never sleeps," Blaine said over the thumping of the music at Scandals. Kurt and Blaine were both taking a break from dancing and had left Sebastian and Dave on the dance floor to nurse some drinks at the bar.
"Me too," Kurt replied. "It's not weird though right? I mean you and I just broke up a little over a month ago and now we are double dating at a gay bar."
"I don't think this could be considered a double date," Blaine said with a laugh. "Besides I don't even know if Sebastian and I are really together or not."
Kurt took a sip of his drink before speaking. "You two still 'just having fun'?"
"I guess. I mean we haven't stated what we are doing or anything, but right now we are only fooling around with each other. I don't know how to go about telling him that I want it to stay that way."
"I'm sure you'll figure something out," Kurt replied.
"Maybe I'll make a deal with him. Seems like that is working out well for you and David."
Kurt sighed. "Not so much."
"What do you mean? You guys seemed pretty happy earlier."
"I want to be with Dave. This stupid deal is the only way he would let that happen. I only agreed in the hopes that I could change his mind before I left," Kurt explained.
"Why is he so hell bent on the two of you breaking up when you leave anyway?"
"He thinks I'll regret being in a long distance relationship."
"I guess that makes sense," Blaine replied.
Kurt sighed and yelled "No. It doesn't make any sense at all."
"Oh. I get it," Blaine said quietly. "Have you told him?"
"Told him what?"
"Come on, Kurt. I like to think I know you pretty well and you know exactly what it is you need to tell him before you leave. Maybe if he knows how you feel about him then he would be more open to the idea of not cutting this off," Blaine explained. "He's probably scared that you'll go off to New York meet guys who are much more confident in their sexuality and more experienced than him and he doesn't understand how he could stand a chance against them."
"Oh my god," Kurt said at the sudden realization.
"You need to tell him Kurt."
"What if it doesn't change his mind?"
"That doesn't matter. Letting someone know how you feel should never be about getting something out of it. It has to be about you wanting to lay yourself bare to them and letting them know the truth."
"So are you going to tell Sebastian the truth?" Kurt asked
"Sebastian and I are far from an epic summer romance like you and David, " Blaine laughed. "Just think about it, Kurt. It can't hurt to tell someone that you love them."
"I can't believe I leave tomorrow," Kurt said as he lay next to Dave in his room. It was weird having all his belongings put away in boxes.
"Yeah," Dave whispered.
"Is it weird that I am scared?"
"Don't be. You are going to do great, Kurt. You were meant to be in New York."
Kurt sighed. "I know. I just feel weird leaving Ohio. I'm not running away and never looking back like I always thought I would," Kurt admitted.
"You know I don't expect you to call, right."
Kurt leaned up to look over at David. "What? Of course I am going to call."
Dave shifted and moved to his side so he could better look at Kurt. "I just mean I will understand if I don't hear from you all that much. You're going to be in New York. There's a lot of stuff to take in there."
Kurt looked at Dave seriously. "I am going to call you. And probably very often."
Dave laughed. "Okay. Fine," he said then sighed. "I should probably get going. My dad is going to expect me to be home soon. I'm going to miss you Hummel."
Kurt lay back down and looked up at his ceiling. "I'm going to miss you too, David. So much."
Dave looked sadly at Kurt before an idea crossed his mind. "Maybe we can just skip the 'Goodbye'. Those always suck anyway," Dave said.
"They do. So what are we just going to ignore that I'm leaving tomorrow?"
Dave sat up and continued talking. "Yeah. Come on follow me," he said as he stood up from the bed and went over to put on his shoes.
"Where are we going?"
"Just follow me Hummel."
Kurt followed Dave to the front door before they stopped.
"So I'll talk to you later, Kurt."
"I'm not ready for this Dave. I can't do this," Kurt said frantically as he realized this was it.
"It's not a goodbye. I'll see you later okay Kurt."
Kurt held back the tears that wanted to spill. "Will I see you tomorrow? Before my dad takes me to the airport?"
Dave smiled sadly. "Probably not. It will be easier for you that way don't you think?"
Kurt nodded. "Yeah. So this is it then?"
"Not goodbye," Dave said as he pulled Kurt close to him a placed a small kiss on his forehead. "I'll see you later."
"I'll see you later, David," Kurt whispered as Dave opened the door and stepped outside.
Kurt made sure to get one last look at Dave before he turned to head back to his car. Kurt told himself he was only going to wait until Dave got in his car. Then he was only going to wait until he left the driveway.
As Kurt stood in the open doorway after Dave was long gone he knew it was finally over and the tears that had threatened to spill over finally did.
It was so cliché that it was raining on the day Kurt was leaving.
"Got everything you need?" His dad asked, pulling Kurt's attention away from the window he was looking out.
"Yeah. Everything else is either in storage or on the truck that is currently making it's way to New York."
"Yeah. According to the delivery guy he said you can be expecting it tomorrow around 4 o'clock in the afternoon."
"I know, Dad," Kurt said with a smile. "I was standing right there when he said it."
"Sorry. I just can't believe you are actually leaving. I wasn't even here the majority of your last week at home."
Kurt nodded, but didn't voice that he was actually glad that his dad and Carole were both absent the majority of the week. It allowed him to spend more time with David.
"Well we better get moving. Don't want you to miss your flight," Burt said as he clapped his hand on his son's back.
The goodbye with Carole was swift. She was teary-eyed, seeing another son leave the nest so soon after getting one back, but Kurt knew she would be okay. Besides, he would see her and his father both soon enough in New York.
The drive to the airport was a perfect send off for Kurt. He and his dad didn't talk much because neither of them really knew what to say. The silence and the rain made for a long drive for Kurt to think about what he was leaving behind.
As much as he was ready to be in New York, he was going to miss some things about Lima. His dad, Carole and Finn of course, but they would visit him in New York so he felt better about that. He would miss his friends from the Glee club, but many of them had already scattered off to their own destinations and he knew that Rachel would be a big enough reminder of home. And then there was David. It still didn't feel right to leave with out telling David goodbye or at least telling the other boy how he really felt. He had wanted to tell the other boy last night, but he had agreed with David that their parting wasn't a 'goodbye'. If anything Kurt hoped it was a 'see you soon'.
They finally pulled up to the passenger drop-off in front of the airport.
"Well. I guess this is it," his dad said sadly.
"I'm going to miss you, Dad."
"I know. But I'll see you in New York and you know you always have a home to come back to if things in the big city don't work out."
"Yeah," Kurt sighed. "It's good to know I have a place to come back to."
Burt nodded at his son but then gave him a serious look. "But you won't need it."
Kurt could feel his eyes tearing up. The fact that his father had so much faith in him would help him to get through this. It was enough to buoy him up and gave him the strength to finally pull on the door handle and step out of the vehicle.
Once he was out of the car and making his way to the security check, he felt like every step he took was just that much harder.
He felt like there was still something pulling him back, but he didn't know what it was. He had everything in order and he had said his 'goodbyes'. Well all except one.
It was then that another cliché happened.
"Kurt!"
Kurt turned around to find Dave jogging up to him. Of course there was going to be an epic airport goodbye scene. Kurt knew it was cliché, but a small part of him was glad it was happening. It meant he got to see David one last time before he left.
"What are you doing here?" He asked.
"I know what we said last night about not saying goodbye, but I couldn't let you leave without seeing you again," Dave explained quickly.
Kurt smiled. "I'm glad you came."
"Sorry. You probably have to go. I don't want you to miss your flight or anything," Dave rambled.
"Shh. I purposely got here early so I would have enough time," Kurt explained.
"I can't believe you're leaving."
"I know. It feels like just yesterday I got the letter saying I got the internship."
"Yeah. I can't believe that was only two weeks ago."
Kurt sighed. " A lot has changed in two weeks."
Dave looked at Kurt with a serious expression before finally pulling the other boy into a warm hug. Kurt let out a breath he hadn't realized he had been holding as he clung to David.
"Goodbye, Kurt," Dave whispered softly.
Kurt pulled away slightly from Dave's embrace before speaking. "It doesn't have to be goodbye, David. We can make this work."
"Kurt. I told you I wasn't going to hold you back."
"But you aren't holding me back, David. I want this. The last 10 days were more than I ever thought they could be. Why can't we just do this? I'm in, okay. I am all in."
"Kurt I already told you that I don't want you worrying about calling and skyping me when you should be taking in the city."
"I am still going to be calling and skyping you even if we go back to just being friends."
"Yeah but at least you can still go out and have fun without worrying about me back here in Lima."
"I'm always going to worry about you, Dave." Kurt said honestly before deciding it was time to admit how he felt. " I lov-"
"Kurt. Don't," Dave interrupted.
"But I do,' Kurt said sadly.
Dave looked sad, but he finally spoke. "When are you coming home again?"
"Thanksgiving. Why?"
Dave sighed. "If you still feel the same way at Thanksgiving, then we can try it out, okay?"
"What?" Kurt asked confused.
"Just… Try to enjoy New York as a single gay man for the next couple of months… If you still want to be with me and do the long distance thing at Thanksgiving, then we will work it out."
"So when I come home for Thanksgiving we can go back to being together?"
"Yeah. Unless you meet someone else while you're in New York between now and then. If you do I will understand and I won't hold it against you."
"Okay," Kurt said. "Thanksgiving then."
"Thanksgiving," Dave repeated in a whisper that sounded like a promise.
Kurt then pulled Dave into a kiss. Their last kiss for a while. But when it was time for Kurt and Dave to part so that Kurt could finally make his way through security, it was easy to do, because Kurt knew he would be back in a few months and he would see David again then.
Kurt could see Dave as he watched him make his way through the TSA security line. He still felt like there was so much left to say to the other boy and he didn't figure out what to do about it until he was taking off his shoes to put them through the x-ray. He hurried the rest of the way through security and once he was on the other side he quickly grabbed his stuff from the conveyor belt and pulled out his phone.
"Kurt?" Dave asked confused on the other end of the line.
"I love you, David," Kurt said as he found Dave's gaze from across the airport. He felt ridiculous standing there without shoes on, but it still felt right. "I can't leave without telling you. I love you and I am going to come back home and see you again in a few months, okay?" Kurt said quickly before the other boy could interrupt.
Dave laughed sadly before replying. "Okay. I love you, too. Bye, Kurt."
"Bye, David," Kurt sighed into the phone as he smiled through his tears. He then hung up his phone and quickly made it to his gate.
